Making Curriculum Connections with Students
Technology, Research & Learning Resources
What: A strategy to support connection making within and among contexts and/or content areas.
Share to Classroom Chrome APP! This new extension for Google Chrome will allow teachers to share web content with the entire class with just a click of the button. You can push the link to students, or create an announcement or assignment. Both teacher and student need to have the extension for this feature to work.
Why: Brain research confirms that the more neural connections made, the more likely it will is that new information will make sense and be integrated into current mental schema. Additionally, connections enhance the ability to recall the information at a later point in time.
New Google Slide Themes and Layouts Coming soon Google Slides now has more options when selecting a theme for your presentation. Further, now when you create a new Slides presentation, no longer will you see the initial Choose a Theme Window. The editor window will open immediately with Theme options displayed to the right. Google Voice Typing Coming to our Google Platform Coming Soon (2 weeks) This feature has been talked about for a while and there were some great Add-ons that made voice dictation work. Now Voice Typing is a standard feature in Google Docs, supporting 40 languages, both on the Web and mobile but only in Chrome. ● ● ● ●
Click Tools Select “Voice Typing” Click the microphone icon that appears to the left and begin speaking. When done, click the microphone again to stop.
How: 1. Students or participants begin by silently reading a designated text. 2. When done reading, individuals first begin recording their thinking alone, making as many of the following connections as possible (download template below): ● connecting what has just been read to their own personal experiences; ● connecting what has been read to other text that has been previously read or learned (and in the case of students, across other content areas); and ● connecting what has just been read to what they know about the world around them 3. After a designated amount of individual think time, allow students/participants to form small groups for the purpose of sharing connections they have made, and exploring the connections other have made. Participants should feel free to add to their own lists. 4. After adequate time for sharing, select a spokesperson for each small group. 5. Designated spokespersons share out information that surfaced during small group conversation that the group feels would be beneficial for the entire group to hear.
