About Books

Three Google Drive Updates Edit Images in Google Docs Google Drive users, a few new features have been rolled-out this week that you might find to be helpful to you. First, you can now edit images within Google Documents. This is feature is similar to the one that has been available in Google Slides for the last few months. To edit an image, right-click on it then select the image editing options that you want to use. Alternatively, you can click the image once and choose image editing tools in the toolbar at the top of your document.

Meet NPR's Book Concierge, a new way to discover this year's standout ... NPR Books is breaking the "best of" list convention with an app that uses filters to explore 250 favorite books from this year. If you want even more recommendations you can see their favorites from 2008 to current.

Slide Numbering in Google Presentation The second update to note is the addition of slide numbering in Google Slides. You can have numbers automatically added to all slides or you can skip numbering on title slides. The slide numbering option can be found in the "insert" menu in Google Slides. Note:This option is currently available in your personal Google Drive and not your Parkway Domain.

Library Reads: An excellent website that provides "the top ten books published this month that librarians across the country love."

Support for File Conversation Third Google Drive update to note this week is expanded support for file conversion. When you upload a file to Google Drive you can choose to convert it to Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides formatting. Click here for a list of the file types supported.

2015 White House Student Film Festival The Impact of Giving Back

The White House announced that from now through January 20, submissions are open for the second White House Student Film Festival. The theme of this year’s festival is The Impact of Giving Back, and it’s open to U.S. students, grades K-12. So tell a story about paying it forward, about community service, or what making a difference looks like in your eyes and through your lens. It can be a fictional story or a short documentary, so break out the lights, write a script, get the camera ready, and show us your passion for service and giving back. For inspiration, take a look at the official selections from last year's White House Student Film Festival, when the theme was the power of technology in education. Films can be short – in fact, they must be 3 minutes tops. The official selections will be featured on the White House website, and shared across the world on White House sites and official social media accounts. If selected, you may have a chance to attend the film fest yourself at the White House. Submission Guidelines: ● ● ● ● ●
