AT a recent Educational Technology Association (ETA of STL) the topic of discussion was favorite online tools for use with BYOD or mobile learning environments. The list is for the areas of Formative assessment, student projects and collaboration/back channels. A great thought when thinking about technology tools is: date the tool, marry the ability (Adam Bellow)...because tools come and go. Are You Getting the Most Out of YouTube? Google Certification for Educators has great resources for learning the ins and outs of all their products. YouTube has high quality educational videos with channels such as Khan Academy, Crash Course and Veritasium that are just a few examples of offerings you may want to subscribe to. When you ‘subscribe’ to an educational channel, you will get an update every time that channel uploads new content. As you continue to subscribe to channels you are letting YouTube know what you like. YouTube will continue to give you updates when your channel subscriptions upload new content, but it will also start suggesting other channels that you might like, too. Every time you go to YouTube you will be greeted with videos and channels that are tailored to you based on your likes, watched videos, and channel subscriptions. This is called the ‘What to Watch’ page. As you continue to use YouTube, it gets better and better at helping you discover content you can use to engage students and teach concept.

Game Based Learning + Makerspaces = Engagement in the Library As many of you are working hard on makerspaces, there has been a cross over to gaming as well. The makerspace movement is blending in with the gaming aspects of learning. Which is a positive direction so long as you are ready and able to answer the questions from parents and administrators about how this fits into library programming. I am a huge proponent of gaming and gamification (there is a difference) in the library, but it may need to be defined for your stakeholders, because they will want to know the importance of gaming to student’s learning. In a recent edutopia news post there were many great resources and tips. ● ● ● ● ●

In-service Courses Computational Thinking for Educators The goal of this course is to help educators learn about computational thinking (CT), how it differs from computer science, and how it can be integrated into a variety of subject areas. As a course participant, you will increase your awareness of CT, explore examples of CT integrated into your subject areas, experiment with examples of CT-integrated activities for your subject areas, and create a plan to integrate CT into your own curricula. The course is divided into five units, each focusing on the following: - Introducing Computational Thinking: What is CT? What is computational thinking, where does it occur, why should you care, and how is it being applied? - Exploring Algorithms - Walk through examples of algorithms used in your subject area. Recognize why algorithms are powerful tools to increase what you can do and that technology can be useful for implementing and automating algorithms. - Finding Patterns - Explore examples of patterns in various subjects and develop your own processes for approaching a problem through pattern recognition. - Developing Algorithms - Increase your confidence in applying the computational process to a given problem and recognize how algorithms can articulate a process or rule. - Final Project: Applying Computational Thinking Create a statement of how computational thinking applies to your subject area and a plan to integrate it into your work and classroom.
