Updates @your Library Nancy’s Notes & Other Reminders Program Evaluation Update The core group of librarians who are going to be involved in this year's program evaluation has met and have decided on the following topics of study for the program this fall. ● Evaluation Systems - How is the work of the librarian reflected in the employee feedback/evaluation systems that we use? How do we evaluate the effectiveness of the library initiatives/programming that we bring to our schools? ● Digital Content Strategies - As the world continues to change and more content is being digitized, how do we balance the traditional materials that we order with digital content? How do we utilize resources that are already available on the web (OER, Public Library, Overdrive) and from our vendors to meet the curricular and literacy goals (love of reading)? ● Developing Services - What services do we need to develop for our individual and collective libraries to meet the needs of our students? What should we be offering that we are not and what should we discontinue? ● Flexible Programming - Similar to the services that we offer, what kids of attributes will make our program flexible enough to meet the needs of our students over time? In other words, we are not creating a program for only today's students but for students to come. How do we need to structure that programming in order to stay relevant to students five years from now ● Student Choice - We have talked a lot about how we can influence our buildings. How do we help to provide choice for students in and out of the library so that their learning is relevant to their interests and so that they can be flexible in their approach to learning? What is the role of the library and the librarian in that process? ● Librarian Role - What is the role of the librarian in a digital age library program?

District Surplus Property Procedure for Librarians Changes by the Board of Education now require both schools and libraries to track Parkway property removal. Library Services is required to oversee weeded books and media. This means the librarian is responsible for sending Jim Hepler a brief email summary of the amount and types of weeded materials including the removal date. Jim will then update the District Surplus Property sheet to be in accordance with the new policy. For items such as furniture and technology, the building will locally complete the District Surplus Property sheet. Directions here.

Notes & Reminders Cont’d Google App-A-Day & Extensions Too

Hour of Code The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. The 2016 Computer Science Education Week will be December 5-11. Get started at https://hourofcode.com/us.

LEGO Challenges More and more libraries have Legos readily available and sometimes it is nice to have prompts to get the creative minds thinking. On this site there is a 30 day Lego Challenge Calendar and other additional Lego resources. One example from the challenge is: The local bank has been robbed. Build a better safe that no one can crack.

We are excited to let everyone know about a new project that we have going on between now and Thanksgiving. As we get more Chromebooks in the district, we've had many requests for how to get more functionality out of Chrome and suggestions for ways to do some of the things we've traditionally done on a laptop. As you probably know, on a Chromebook, if it's not on the web, you can't do it. However, there are tons of ways that we can do similar (if not identical) tasks using the Chrome browser. So, for the next few weeks, every day you will find a new Chrome app or extension highlighted on this site. Take what makes sense for you or that you need and leave the rest. You will always be able to go back and find other things when you're ready. Look for daily posts on the Google+ PIN network too.

Makerspace Purchases from Lib Service Budget As you know you have up to 10% of your Library Services budget to purchase makerspace items for the library. In order to accommodate these orders and make purchasing the most efficient, please complete your orders in a shared (with Nancy) Google Sheet with your school name in the file title (Fern Ridge_Makerspace_Purchase). On the Google sheet please include the following column titles: ● item ● quantity ● cost ● link to vendor or page where the exact item for purchase can be located Please allow plenty of time for items to arrive because Nancy will be bundling PO orders together for efficiency.

Follett Audio Visual Orders As you know we have a contract with Follett to supply and process our orders. As a reminder, our contract with Follett requires that all of our audio/visual items be processed (MARC records) through them. This is crucial to the accuracy of our Destiny Library Manager system.

Looking for Lego compatible bricks that are a little more price friendly, check out Toysopoly. The building brick also come with downloadable instructions for various missions, such as the Rescue the Penguins and Horse Racing.

Computer Science Unplugged – CS Unplugged is a wonderful collection of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around. Tynker – Along with great programming opportunities, the Hour of Code activities are designed to teach students computational thinking and the basics of computer programming. Students solve each puzzle by programming visual code blocks to achieve a goal. Accelerator Nation –You and your students can dive into hands-on aerodynamics experiments and dynamic STEM activities that support core science lessons in force, momentum, and speed. Tech Rockets – Students ages 10 to 18 can create a Tech Rocket account and gain access to amazing tech courses. Each course contains lessons, support materials, and interactive challenges. NASA Kids Club – Students take part in some amazing technology based missions as they engage in various missions. Center for Game Science – Discover this unique site that has created games focused on the importance of scientific discovery, discovering optimal learning pathways for STEM education. Smithsonian Science and Technology – Make sure you take the time to look at these lesson plans that emphasize the idea of science and technology through culture and history. MindMup is one of my favorite online mind mapping tools. MindMup works in your browser and it can be integrated into your Google Drive account where you can then collaborate with other users. Creating mind maps is one of my favorite ways to organize ideas and information. I've often had my students create mind maps as an exercise in making visual connections between important concepts, events, and people in a unit of study. One of the cogs in the Future Ready Schools initiative is Use of Space and Time. For librarians that means designing collaborative spaces. In a recent article from American Libraries Magazine ideas and strategies were shared for creating successful spaces. Some things to consider as we think about our spaces and how we want to make them collaborative, flexible areas that promote inquiry, creativity, and community include: ● Students see the library as their space ● Flexibility to accommodate a wide range of needs and preferences ● A place where we help students manage their own learning and model for each other ● Engage users in unexpected moments of discovery and delight while they were in the space ● A place where students are interacting with content, peers, experts and the space itself (individually & groups) ● Since the students own the library - use peer-to-peer language on signage ● Space, lighting, and furniture are designed to cue users on how to sort themselves into areas of need collaboration vs quiet study. All of these things should be fluid in nature in order to expand and contract designated areas ● An important accessory to these newly created areas portable and stationary dry erase boards ● In order to stimulate serendipitous learning pique curiosity and expand awareness and understanding of the world beyond our library - be sure to include video displays, exhibitions, art work, events, programs, new technologies, etc. What does it mean to be a

New Facebook Groups for Librarians From the 5 Minute Librarian blog comes 15 new FB groups for librarians. They highlighted Facebook Groups that are for Public Librarians last year, but recently updated the list and have some new additions! Conference Materials from State and SMALL CONFERENCES Another resource from the 5 Minute Librarian is this list of conference materials including presentations and handouts online, freely available to anyone. Check them out after their conference ends! Parkway Credit One option for earning Parkway credits is to participate in webinars and events, such as Edcamps, SLAA events, makerspace open houses etc. In order to earn participation credits watch the webinar or go to an event, then record your participation at tinyurl.com/webinars-events. Remember that district credit is based on the number of clock hours that you participate. Credit is issued as follows: six clock hours will get you .5 credit and 12 clock hours will get you 1 credit.
