Tablet Distribution In the next few weeks I will be making the rounds to distribute the Samsung Tab4 tablets that Bill discussed at our opening meeting in August. The tablets are currently being updated and charged. The mounts however will not be available at this time due to a manufacturing glitch. More information will be coming soon as well.

Nancy’s Nook & Other Notes Follett Orders Recently, several of you have wanted to know why your Follett orders have not shipped. The impression is that orders ship two weeks after ordering. Our contract with Follet is, and always has been, first pull (shipment) out in 20 business days (4 weeks), second pull (shipment) 40 business days (8 weeks). Also, keep in mind that PO's are not processed by Nancy the same day ordered, as done previously, and the PO approval process can take up to 10 days. Please plan ahead. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Nancy. Mobile Makerspaces Update Currently I am working with Amy and Bill get the mobile makerspaces up and running. We have been putting together the tip sheets/directions for each center. We are testing Bitsbox coding kits with a couple of librarians to see how the management and clarity of the center is function at the elementary level. The next kits that will be ready to go is the LEGO WeDo 9580. This kit lets students build with LEGOs and then program them via laptop application. Our next step is to work out some kinks with the logistics of the spheros, the programmable robotic balls. The Spheros are very promising in that they offer a teacher/curriculum guide called SPRK. There is a Google Form http://tinyurl.com/pkwymakes to sign up for mobile makerspace kits. The request for a kit will be on a first-come, first-serve basis and the form is evolving as kits are available and new ones are added. Google Certification Last year as we were preparing to implement Google Apps I offered any librarian who was interested the opportunity to either be reimbursed for a passed test or given district PD credit. I want to extend that opportunity to you once again. If you are interested in learning more about Google and Google Apps, this is a great, self-paced development opportunity. There are a number of librarians who already participated last year so ask your fellow librarians (or Kim) to get some insight on this. All information (including study materials and the tests themselves) can be found at http://www.google. com/edu/training/certifications/. Click on the "Certification" tab to get to more information. There's an FAQ page https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/certification_faq as well. New Earn Credit by Attending Events In addition to earning credits by watching webinars, you can also earn credits by attending events. See details in the Personalized Learning section of this newsletter. Tips for Promoting the Library Social Media Page This week I was asked a great question about promoting and having a social presence. While it does take awhile, there are a few suggestion: ● Think about the network you already have - for example if you have a parent volunteer list, an email list, pto, etc. that you use regularly personally invite them ● Facebook has "badges" that you can post to your website or blog that links fans from your website to the FB page - http://www.facebook.com/badges/page.php ● Share a link to your Facebook Page on other social networks. Try sending the link out on Twitter, and adding a link in all the descriptions for your YouTube Videos or Flickr Photos to start. ● Offer incentives for posting to the site - example - free book from the book fair ● Promote your Facebook Page on all of your print marketing materials including business cards, menus, flyers, signs, t-shirts — anywhere it can be visible. The more fans you have, the more your posts, pictures, and videos will reach the people you want to reach. ● Promote your Facebook Page the next time you speak at a workshop, faculty meeting, or training session. Even include an image and link to your page in all your documentation your slide deck. What does it mean to be a librarian in the digital age?

The Solar System to Scale This beautiful short film depicting what happened when a group of friends built a scale model of the solar system on the a dry lakebed in Nevada is 7 minutes long, and it’s worth a watch. It is the depiction of the relationship between solid matter and empty space in our solar system, which is difficult for most of us to even fathom.
