Are eBooks eComplicated? Since the January PD day, there has been quite the buzz about eBooks and the Folle Shelf. It was very exci ng to hear that many of you had great ques ons and a vested interest in this endeavor. I apologize for not being there to par cipate, but I do have some other thoughts about eBooks. The past few months I have been a ending webinars and gathering informa on to share with all of you. In the next few issues of the newsle er various topics about eBooks will be shared:

So, Why Go Digital? Meet students where they are and right now they are online It encourages educa onal uses of their devices—crea ng digital leaders Promotes the reading program Many of the apps allow for audio, video and interac vity (ac ve involvement equals ac ve reading) Reaching out to reluctant readers Ambiguity – no one knows if he/she is reading a remedial level book In mida on is not a factor – in terms of the thickness of a book It’s an electronic world and students need to be taught how to work with it – they may be tech comfy, but not necessarily tech savvy Great for me sensi ve materials – need it now
Calling All Curators! Flipboard Magazine Many people, like 150 million, are using Flipboard to read, collect, and curate the news or their favorite stories into a digital magazine on their iPad, Android, or web browser. In your web browser you can flip pages, expand ar cles, bookmark ar cles, and share ar cles to your favorite social networks. If you would like to find publically created magazines visit the Flipboard community page or you may want to follow the Flipboard magazine created and curated by coolca eacher, Vicki Davis (Another person to add to your PLN). Ideas for educa on use: It could be a great ac vity for students studying current events to collabora vely share their findings. Students could share the ar cles and put them into one magazine for the whole class to read. Maybe it is a way for students to curate all the digital ar cles they are collec ng for a research project. As a professional development ac vity collabora vely crea ng Flipboard magazines could be a great way for Librarians to share ar cles with each other. Those shared ar cles as could be the star ng point for discussion during the next department mee ng, PLC, or Mee ng of the Minds event.
