St Louis County Library Databases Many of you are looking for extra resources when it comes to biography units. Have you checked out the databases available at SLCL? In a recent visit to SLCL Headquarters, Colleen Hall in the Outreach Services Department showed me a few items that may be of interest to you. When accessing the databases for students go to http://www.slcl.org/research, click on For Students in the Subject Guides Grid. Once in the databases for students select American National Biography. Once a database is selected students will be prompted to put in their library account login information. (If they do not have a card they can sign up and get instant access to a library barcode and pin number at https://webpac.slcl.org/selfreg.) Colleen thought this resource would be appropriate for upper elementary on up.

Library Lessons The 8 Skills Students Must Have for the Future by edudemic.com Education has traditionally focused on the basic “3Rs” of reading, writing and arithmetic. However, as the ever increasing pace of technological innovation drives changes in the world, educators must re-evaluate whether the skills they teach truly provide their students with the best opportunities to succeed in school, the workforce, and in life overall. This naturally leads to the question of what those skills are or will be, and while there are other excellent suggestions out there, Pearson’s 2014 edition of “The Learning Curve” report lists the 8 skills as those most necessary to succeed in the 21st century.
