ISTES’s 3 Tips for Effective Tech Coaching

ISTE Standards in Our Setting The last several weeks we were looking at technology and the use of it with students. Now we will take a peek at global learning in the digital age through the eyes of a coach. As a Library Media Specialist today you are seen as change agents which could mean that you are a technology coach for your building. Think about how often you make learning about technology personal, differentiated, and jobembedded for students and staff. The next several weeks will be dedicated to introducing the standards for coaches and helping you identify how your work is critical in helping students and teachers integrate technology and support creation, communication, collaboration, and innovation. Coaches are playing a major role in transforming schools into digital-age learning environments which means helping student gain the knowledge and skills they need for work, life, and citizenship in a global society. There are some common, observable features of technology coaches that many of you participate in on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis: 1. You are a listener that hears the needs and concerns of teachers and administrators. By listening you are establishing that one-on-one connection and helping reaching realistic learning goals. This is an essential step in bridging barriers of change. 2. Professional learning is conceived as a co-learning partnership between the LMS and the teacher. There is a mutual respect and professionalism. The neat thing is that you will learn from each other. 3. In the coaching role you are a guide to the change process. The LMS models effective practice, supports teachers as they pilot new practices, reflects on on trial runs, and provides follow-up to ensure the new practices have taken root and are thriving. Is this collaboration and working together intensive? Absolutely, but it is the most effective strategy when thinking about transformative learning. The standards describe how successful coaches provide critical contributions in the following categories: ● Visionary leadership ● Teaching, learning, and assessments ● Digital-age learning environments ● Professional development and program evaluation ● Digital Citizenship ● Content knowledge and professional growth

“Teachers care about creating authentic learning experiences, and it's up to coaches to show how technology can help them do that.”

1. Start by asking questions. Many tech coaches feel pressured to be the expert in the room, especially when it comes to technology. However, it’s often more effective to approach teachers as learning partners. By asking questions about specific learning activities and areas where a teacher might be interested in collaborating, coaches can provide a more personalized learning experience. 2. Uncover the instructional goal. Once you pinpoint a specific learning activity to work on, find out what the teacher hopes to accomplish with the lesson. Then work with the teacher to identify which tools best meet that goal. 3. Consider how class time will be spent. Another important factor to address is how the teacher wants students to spend their time. In the example above, if the teacher opts for video, ask how much time students should spend focusing on writing versus developing their technology skills. If the focus is on writing, look for a simple tool that doesn’t require a lot of time or learning to use. How To Create A Works Cited With Google Docs If your students are creating research papers in Google Docs, why not show them how to create works cited there too? With the EasyBib Add-on for Google Docs, students can easily create a bibliography and add it directly to their research paper. EasyBib is a favorite Add-ons for GAFE because it makes the citation process so simple, ensuring that all sources are properly referenced. Students can search for books, journal articles and websites inside their Doc and format the citations in MLA, APA or Chicago style.

4 Advanced Search Operators to Help Find Elusive Google Drive Files Many of you are working on how to manage your files inside of Drive. Some of you have a folder structure but others tend to let the list of documents get longer and longer. If you prefer to keep a list rather than maintain a folder system, then being able to use search operators will make finding what you are looking for much more efficient. Check out the video on how to use the following operators: 1. title: – search by the file’s title (group phrases in quotation marks) 2. owner: – search according to who owns the item (works best with owner: email address) 3. type: – search by the file type (this covers: document, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, image, video, image_or_video, pdf, and textdoc) 4. is:starred – search items that you’ve marked with a star Tips taken from Google Gooru

Follett Destiny

About Books

More on ILL Just as a point of clarification, interlibrary loans in Destiny are working and have been since the day we started using it. Whenever you have interlibrary requests or other tasks needing your attention, you'll see a Processing Needed flag in the upper right when in the standard Destiny view and logged in with your Librarian login. Please, either decline or ship hold requests coming to you as soon as possible - if these requests are ignored, they will sit there until they expire, and the patron will never get the materials they need.

Titlewave Analysis Denise is in the process of running a Titlewave Analysis for everyone, and has completed the High, Middle and some of the Elementary schools. You will receive an email notice from Follett saying that the analysis is complete, or the data analysis has failed. If it failed, she is fixing the incorrect data, and re-running it. Once this is done, you will be able to run the analysis yourself through the Titlewave link on the Catalog page in Destiny.

Ordering with Follett (now with screenshots) Sometimes it can be a long time between Follett book orders. Recently a new QRG (Quick Reference Guide) was created with screenshots to jog our memories. Most importantly, if you have any questions about ordering, ask Nancy. http://goo. gl/wYdJtI
