BIFF is extremely proud this year to pay tribute to the legendary Academy Award nominated actor Bruce Dern with the BIFF Achievement in Film Award. Throughout his tremendous career, Bruce Dern has played both modern day heroes and legendary villains. Through his decades of critically acclaimed performances, Dern has been widely regarded as one of the most talented and prolific actors of his generation. Trained by Elia Kazan at The Actor’s Studio, Dern’s

BIFF will close on Sunday, June 5th with the highly anticipated new film DE PALMA about the legendary Brian de Palma. We are extraordinarily pleased that co-directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow will be in attendance for a Q&A moderated by artist Gregory Crewdson. Special events during the Festival weekend include the awarding of GWFF USA’s Juried Prize for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings, panel discussions with films on Mike Nichols, Isaiah Sheffer, Hitchcock and Truffault, and the screening of an important environmental film, as well as a very special screening of A YEAR BY THE SEA, based on Joan Anderson’s book, starring Karen Allen. We are also very pleased to be presenting the SEVENTH annual “Next Great Filmmaker Award” sponsored by Berkshire Bank. You can cast your vote until June at www.biffma.org. Vote today and be part of the excitement! I thank everyone who has joined and continues to support the REEL Friends Film Society. My heartfelt gratitude goes to my incredibly dedicated and generous board of directors, to Lauren Ferin and the festival staff and to the advisory board and programming producers for their endless, selfless efforts. I also acknowledge the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, as well as the energy and spirit of our volunteers and the staff of the Triplex, Beacon and Mahaiwe. Greatly appreciated as well is the on-going support of the Selectmen of Great Barrington, the City Government of Pittsfield and the merchants and restaurant-owners in both communities. Great thanks goes out to all of you.

Welcome to the exciting 2016 annual Berkshire International Film Festival. After our tremendous 10th anniversary year, I am pleased to be building on that success to bring our community and audience a festival that will entertain, challenge, engage, inspire and amaze us. Good filmmaking is synonymous with good storytelling and the stories our filmmakers are sharing with us are wonderful and heroic. We love film because it takes us places physically, visually and emotionally and connects us to the world in our own backyard and places a million miles away. I continue to be amazed at the amount of inspired filmmaking that is being created and I celebrate those filmmakers who share their stories and their talent. So come journey with us to Afghanistan, Brazil, Australia, Iran, England, India, France, China, Italy, Israel, Argentina and Iceland.

Located in the center of Norman Rockwell’s Main Street in the quaint village of Stockbridge, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, take a dip in a heated swimming pool, listen to some of the Bershire’s best live music in the Lion’s Den pub, or simply rock back and forth on our legendary Front Porch and watch the world go by.

GATSBY (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination). It was his brilliant and powerful performance in Hal Ashbys’ COMING HOME that earned him both an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination.

One of the most talented, influential, and iconoclastic filmmakers of all time, Brian De Palma’s career started in the 60s and has included such acclaimed and diverse films as CARRIE, DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT, SCARFACE, THE UNTOUCHABLES, CARLITO’S WAY, and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. In this lively, illuminating and unexpectedly moving documentary, Directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow engage in a personal and candid discussion with De Palma, exploring not only his life and work but also his singular approach to the craft of filmmaking and his remarkable experiences navigating the film business, from his early days as the bad boy of New Hollywood to his more recent years as a respected veteran of the field. In the end, what emerges is a funny, honest, and incisive portrait of a truly one-of-a-kind artist, and an exhilarating behind-thescenes look at the last 50 years of the film industry through the eyes of someone who has truly seen it all.

LIFE, ANIMATED tells the remarkable story of how Owen found in Disney animation a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world. By evocatively interweaving classic Disney sequences with verite scenes from Owen’s life, the film explores how identification and empathy with characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel forge a conduit for him to understand his feelings and interpret reality. Beautiful, original animations further give form to Owen’s fruitful dialogue with the Disney oeuvre as he imagines himself heroically facing adversity in a tribe of sidekicks. With an arsenal of narratives at his disposal, Owen rises to meet the challenges of adulthood in this moving coming-of-age tale.

LIZA AND THE FOX FAIRY

MORRIS FROM AMERICA

Hungary, 2015, 100 min.

US/Germany, 2016, 90 min.

Fox-fairies are evil demons from Japanese folklore, who rob men of their lives. Liza, a 30-year-old nurse, goes in search of love, but her ill-fated admirers all die on their first date. A peculiar and poignant comedy set in a fictionalized 1970s Hungary with a capitalist system...LISA, AND THE FOX FAIRY is a sarcastic fairy tale for grownups.

A heartwarming and crowd-pleasing coming-of-age comedy with a unique spin, MORRIS FROM AMERICA centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance), a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Craig Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hiphop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.

OUR WOMEN

PARCHED

France, 2016, 95 min.

India/UK, 2016, 115 min.

What would you say if your best friend told you that he had just killed his wife and then begged you to be his alibi? Adapted from Eric Assous’s smash hit play, OUR WOMEN brings together three giants of French cinema (Auteuil, Lhermitte and Berry) in an edgy comedy filled with reflections on morality, money, marriage, faithfulness both in love and in friendship, and dizzying and incisive verbal jousting reminiscent of THE DINNER GAME (LE DÎNER DE CONS) and WHAT’S IN A NAME (LE PRÉNOM).

PARCHED is a story about women set in the heart of the parched rural landscape of Gujarat, India. It traces the bittersweet tale of four ordinary women-Rani, Lajjo, Bijli and Janaki. We see them unapologetically talk about men, sex and life as they struggle with their individual boundaries to face their demons and stage their own personal wars.

Brazil, 2015, 105 min.

Canada, 2016, 90 min.

Sebastián takes Jalil on a most important mission. What begins as an inconvenience for Sebastián ends up being an adventure that will change his life.

The movie tells the story of Laerte, a talented violinist who after failing to be admitted into the Osesp orchestra is forced to give music class to teenagers in a public school in Heliopolis. THE RAINBOW KID is a gritty coming of age story that follows Eugene, a teenager with Down syndrome, on the journey of his life. Obsessed with everything rainbows, whether it’s their beauty, their symbolism, or the myths that surround them, this obsession acts as an escape from his real life, which is a mess: he’s bullied at school, the girl he likes doesn’t notice him, and his mother is terminally ill. Worse, he discovers that he and his mom are on the verge of being evicted. Eugene decides to take matters into his own hands. He’ll find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. JUNE 2-5, 2016

New England’s dairy farmers remain the backbone of the region’s agriculture but fight for survival in an age of baby greens and artisan cheese. FORGOTTEN FARMS examines class divisions and cultural divides in New England’s farm and food communities. New England has lost over 10,000 conventional dairy farms in the past 50 years; 2000 farms remain. Collectively, they tend 1.2 million acres of farmland and produce almost all of the milk consumed in New England. In our enthusiasm for the local food movement, many of us have forgotten that 75 years ago these farmers were at the center of a thriving local food economy. FORGOTTEN FARMS reconsiders the role of these amazing farmers. FORGOTTEN FARMS gives us a glimpse into the past and a vision of an expanded local agriculture for all of New England’s population.

LANDFILL HARMONIC

LIFE, ANIMATED

US, 2015, 85 min.

LANDFILL HARMONIC follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight. Under the guidance of idealistic music Director Favio Chavez, the orchestra must navigate a strange new world of arenas and sold-out concerts. However, when a natural disaster strikes their country, Favio must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and provide a source of hope for their town. The film is a testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. PETER AND THE FARM

RACING EXTINCTION

US, 2016, 90 min.

US, 2015, 95 min.

Peter Dunning is the proud proprietor of Mile Hill Farm, which sits on 187 idyllic acres in Vermont. The land’s 38 harvests have seen the arrivals and departures of three wives and four children, leaving Peter with only animals and memories. The arrival of a film crew causes him to confront his history and his legacy, passing along hardwon agricultural wisdom even as he doubts the meaning of the work he is fated to perform until death. Haunted by alcoholism and regret, Peter veers between elation and despair, often suggesting to the filmmakers his own suicide as a narrative device. He is a tragedian on a stage that has taken him most of his life to build, and which now threatens to collapse out from under him. At once a postcard from paradise and a cautionary tale for our times, PETER AND THE FARM sifts through the potential energy of a human life, that which is used and that which is squandered.

Oscar®-winner Louie Psihoyos (THE COVE) assembles a team of artists and activists to show the world never-before-seen images that expose issues around endangered species and mass extinction. Whether infiltrating notorious black markets or exploring our affect on the environment, RACING EXTINCTION will change the way we see the world.

REBEL CITIZEN US, 2015, 80 min. Pamela Yates’ new film grew out of her friendship with master cinematographer and fellow activist Haskell Wexler. Wexler asked Yates to represent him at a retrospective of his documentary work at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, and she responded by making a film portrait of her mentor and longtime collaborator. Wexler speaks with warmth, lucidity, and absolute certitude about his largely unknown body of work as a documentary filmmaker, his progressive political beliefs, his craft, and his aesthetics, which are fundamentally one in the same. REBEL CITIZEN takes us on a revelatory tour of Wexler’s work, and it includes clips from his early documentary THE BUS, shot aboard a bus on its way across the country to the 1963 March on Washington, as well as MEDIUM COOL and UNDERGROUND, his film about the Weather (UNDERGROUND co-directed with Emile de Antonio and Mary Lampson). This may be the last filmed conversation with Wexler before his death in December 2015. Director // Pamela Yates Producers // Paco de Onis, Peter Kinoy

Narrated by actress Susan Sarandon, the film includes interviews with the community activists who led the fight, and state and city officials. The film also symbolizes efforts to preserve nature, combat climate change and make good national parks great again. THE WITNESS

TRAPPED

UNTOUCHABLE

US, 2015, 90 min.

US, 2016, 83 min.

US, 2016, 115 min.

Fifty years ago, the name “Kitty Genovese” became synonymous with urban apathy after news that she was stabbed to death on a New York City street while 38 witnesses did nothing. Forty years later, her brother Bill decides to find the truth buried beneath the story. In the process, he uncovers a lie that transformed his life, condemned a city, and defined an era.

U.S. abortion clinics are fighting to survive. Since 2010, hundreds of laws regulating abortion clinics have been passed by conservative state legislatures, particularly in the south. These restrictions, known as TRAP laws (or Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers) are spreading across America. Faced with increased costs of compliance and the alarming fear of violence from protestors, the stakes for the women and men on the frontlines couldn’t be any higher. TRAPPED follows the clinic workers and lawyers -- including those who will be taking their case to the Supreme Court in March -- who are fighting to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women, many of whom are poor and uninsured.

When the most powerful lobbyist in Florida discovers that the nanny has sexually abused his daughter, he harnesses his extraordinary political power to pass the toughest sex offender laws in the nation. UNTOUCHABLE chronicles his crusade, and its impact on the lives of several of the 800,000 people forced to live under the kinds of laws he has championed. The film interweaves intimate portraits of men and women who have been branded sex offenders with the heartbreaking stories of those who have suffered sexual abuse.

US/Mexico, 2016, 16 min.

Joe Koches – master blacksmith of Ferndale, California – has been in business for over 34 years. During that time he has experienced immense economic and social change. This change has brought about a drastic shift in consumerism, with the average American now almost exclusively purchasing foreign made, mass manufactured goods. Despite these trends, the recession, and Joe’s advanced age he is attempting to ensure that the art of local handcrafted products is never extinguished from the vast landscape of American commerce.

Deep in Mexico, Carlos, an indigenous Tarahumara who left his community to be trained as a nurse, has returned to his homeland to try to save babies and mothers who have been dying at a high rate during childbirth. These deaths (far too common in indigenous groups worldwide) further threaten an already dwindling population and its dying culture. SAM HARPER

JUNE 2-5, 2016

Sam Harper is a writer, screenwriter, and some time producer and director. He began his career 150 years ago as an associate editor at Advertising Age magazine in New York where he excelled at writing about tobacco products, chewing gum and evaporated milk. Looking for a pay upgrade, he moved to Los Angeles to become a screenwriter. After serving time as a story analyst at MGM and Tri-Star, he got his first screenwriting gig re-writing REVENGE OF THE NERDS II: NERDS IN PARADISE. For some reason, a period of unemployment followed the release of this sweeping epic, but the free time allowed him to come up with the idea for ROOKIE OF THE YEAR. The release of that movie was followed (a mere 10 years later) by JUST MARRIED, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2, OPEN SEASON, HOUSEBROKEN and RIO. During that time he also worked on NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, THE LITTLE RASCALS, DUNSTON CHECKS IN, FAT ALBERT, LIKE MIKE, ALIENS IN THE ATTIC, GARFIELD, MARMADUKE and ICE AGE 2 for which he received no on screen credit.
