NEED NEW LETTER

The festival opens this year with the Sundance hit AMERICAN ANIMALS. This docudrama is the extraordinary and thrilling true story of four friends who brazenly attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in US history. At its Sundance premiere, a Variety reviewer wrote, “this Sundance crowd-pleaser is a… wildly entertaining true-crime thriller.” The Hollywood Reporter had this to say, “Both as a writer and director, Bart Layton delivers the dramatic goods here with the skill of a pro at the top of his game while adding the rueful perspective of time’s reassessment of youthful indiscretions; this has to rate among the most accomplished and fully realized big-screen debuts of recent times.” Opening night festivities also include dinner, drinks and a dance party for pass-holders catered and sponsored by MAX Ultimate Food.

BIFF will open at the Beacon in Pittsfield with the rock-and-rolling BAD REPUTATION about the one and only Joan Jett. The documentary follows her incredible, uncompromising and influential career. You will leave singing “I love rock ‘n’ roll!” The opening night begins with a party at the Beacon Cinema followed by the presentation of the NINTH annual “Next Great Filmmaker Award” sponsored by Berkshire Bank—cast your vote until before May 30 at www.biffma. org and be part of the excitement!

It is a pleasure, and a huge honor, to pay tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor, Rachel Weisz for her remarkable achievement in film. Over the past 25 years, Ms. Weisz has displayed her fearlessness, intelligence and talent in over 64 roles and has won or been nominated for nearly every industry award—from a BAFTA, to a Golden Globe, to an Oscar. We celebrate the incredible body of work she has already created and the creative peaks she continues to climb. After a conversation with Ms. Weisz on the stage of the Mahaiwe, BIFF will screen her new film DISOBEDIENCE. The special event’s festivities, sponsored by GWFF, include a cocktail party and dinnerby-the-bite for pass-holders catered by The Red Lion Inn at the BIFF tent.

Finally, BIFF’s biennial gala is this Labor Day weekend—BOLLYWOOD IN THE BERKSHIRES! To introduce the Berkshire community to the wonderful film world of Bollywood, BIFF presents 3 FREE Bollywood films at Simon’s Rock on June 2. Join us in celebrating, Bollywood in the Berkshires! Thank you to everyone that who has joined and continues to support the REEL Friends Film Society. It is vital to the BIFF and allows us to bring the best films to the festival and throughout the year. I must thank my incredibly dedicated and generous board of directors, our new executive director Laura Palmer, Lauren Ferin and the festival staff, the endless and selfless efforts of the advisory board, Lillian Lennox and the programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, the Triplex, Beacon, Mahaiwe and Simon’s Rock staff as well as the tremendous support from the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield. So, leave your passport at home because BIFF will bring the world to you! Join me as we kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires and let the cameras roll!

GENERAL INFO AND MAPS

In addition to the dozens of remarkable films, BIFF will host some special events throughout the weekend including GWFF USA’s Juried Prize Award for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings, and panel discussions. It is also our second year hosting “Tea Talks.” This year’s lineup includes a conversation with the Berkshires own, Cynthia Wade, preceded by a special sneak preview of her new prereleased film GRIT. The filmmaker and crew will be in attendance. We are also hosting a conversation with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph (THE BIG SHORT) who will be joined by acclaimed artist, Gregory Crewdson. Our third Tea Talk will be a sneak preview of a film from an award-winning director who will be in attendance for a conversation with his cast and crew. And don’t miss the staged reading of the upcoming film MUMBET followed by a Q&A with the director, writer, cast, producers, designers and special guests.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BIFF EXPERIENCE! There are a lot of moving parts to the BIFF. The following rules and suggestions are to ensure that everyone who comes to the BIFF has the best experience possible and that our volunteers and staff can manage all of our events and screening.

ADMISSION

NOTE TO OUR PASSHOLDERS: To guarantee admission and priority early entry, you must be present at the venue 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time—a standard for all film festivals. Late seating is only permitted if easily accessible seats are available. Empty seats will be sold to festival-goers waiting patiently in our RUSH LINE.

RE-ENTRY INTO THEATERS

If you must exit the theater you must alert a BIFF usher to ensure re-entry to that same screening. This policy applies to passholders too.

FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE

• Do not bring outside food into the festival theaters. Our theater partners offer a variety of food and drink through their concession stands. Please help us honor their support of the BIFF. • Exit the theaters immediately after all screenings. This will allow staff and volunteers to clean and ready the theater for the next screening. • Do not save seats for other guests between shows. • Take your trash with you when you leave the theater. • Keep talking to a minimum when exiting theaters as to not disturb patrons in other theaters. • Recording equipment is not allowed in the theater. • Turn off all cell phones during the screening. • Do not talk during the screening so all of our guests may enjoy the film. • There is no late seating if the theater is at full capacity. • Lines often extend outside of the theater and temperatures in the theater vary. For your comfort, bring layers and dress appropriately.

The festival opens with WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL, in celebration of the centenary of her birth. WHAT SHE SAID tells the story of longtime New Yorker film critic and best-selling author Pauline Kael. Featuring a rich blend of interviews with filmmakers and colleagues, never-before-seen archival footage, and Kael’s own words—the latter of which are drawn from interviews, private letters, and published writings that are narrated by Emmy Award winning actress Sarah Jessica Parker—WHAT SHE SAID depicts the storied writer’s battle to make a name for herself through covering some of the biggest cinematic milestones of the 20th century. Variety wrote about the film, “WHAT SHE SAID is an exquisitely crafted documentary about the woman who was arguably the greatest movie critic who ever lived.” The director Rob Garver, New Yorker film critic Craig Seligman and writer Stephanie Zacharek will be in attendance for a Q&A following the film.

BIFF 2019 ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM HONOREE ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR

MARTIN SCORSESE I MAY 30-JUNE 2, 2019

ntroducing Martin Scorsese as a “filmmaker” is like calling the Great Pyramid of Giza a “rock.” His work, however (like the Great Pyramid), is a compelling lure to all tourists who trek into the dimly-lit land of the movie theater. And, like the Pyramids, experts continually study Scorsese’s films to try to unearth the secrets of their construction. For instance, what is it about the juxtaposition of the romantic glide of Travis Bickle’s yellow taxi through the rain-soaked, black streets of New York—girded by Bernard Herrmann’s provocative score— that so effectively sets up the tension of longing, despair and violence to come?

20

And what exactly is a “Scorsese film” when his oeuvre spans nearly every genre, from female-centric romantic dramas like ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE to the brutal, hyper-machismo films like MEAN STREETS, RAGING BULL, CASINO and GOODFELLAS, to thrillers such as SHUTTER ISLAND and Oscar-winning

masterpiece, THE DEPARTED to historical biographies like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, KUNDUN, SILENCE, THE AVIATOR, and his newest film, THE IRISHMAN. Add to this list black comedies (THE KING OF COMEDY and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) and his fandom documentaries paying homage to subjects as disparate as The Band (THE LAST

WALTZ), Elia Kazan (A LETTER TO ELIA), George Harrison (GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD), Bob Dylan (NO DIRECTION HOME)...to his parents (ITALIANAMERICAN), and to the New York Review of Books (THE 50 YEAR ARGUMENT) and one can understand that there isn’t a descriptive net big enough to capture all of Scorsese’s genius.

Oddly enough, despite being known for the violence of his films, perhaps it is the family-friendly, phantasmagorical HUGO that best describes what is a “Scorsese film.” First of all: it is the quintessential film nerd’s creation that draws from cinema’s past while using the technology of the future. Shooting in 3-D, unknown when he began his career in the late sixties, allowed Scorsese not only to reinvent the known “language of film” but to look backward, paying homage to the beginning of film itself by celebrating Georges Méliès, one of the fathers of cinema. The themes of loneliness, romantic longing, cruelty, the exploitation of power, and anxiety of belonging combine with his respect for family, historical figures, and the power of music. All of these themes are Scorsese’s obsession, found over and over in his work and expressed, as in HUGO, with the tools of craft—acting, editing, lighting, music, writing and technology—that have been sharpened by a lifetime of passion. Like the Great Pyramid of Giza, the work of Martin Scorsese will stand the test of time. Long after we are all gone from this world, his curiosity, his obsession to probe into and to document the human psyche will endure. And forevermore his work will tell whomever is gazing at it, like at the Pyramids, “This was us. Our desires, our fears, our violence, our tenderness, our beauty. This is who we were.” Martin Scorsese once said:

Movies touch our hearts, and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. They take us to other places. They open doors and minds. Movies are the memories of our lifetime. We need to keep them alive.

In South Boston, the state police force is waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello. While Billy quickly gains Costello’s confidence, Colin Sullivan, a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the state police as an informer for the syndicate is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by their double lives, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations they have penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there is a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy - and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save themselves. But is either willing to turn on their friends and comrades they’ve made during their long stints undercover?

In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to propagate Catholicism.

Jennifer Trainer’s captivating new documentary MUSEUM TOWN tells the story of a unique museum, the small town it calls home and the great risk, hope and power of art to transform a desolate post-industrial city. In 2017, MASS MoCA became the largest museum for contemporary art in the world—but just three decades before, its vast brick buildings were the abandoned relics of a massive shuttered factory. How did such a wildly improbable transformation come to be? A testament to tenacity and imagination, MUSEUM TOWN traces the remarkable story of how a small rural Massachusetts town went from economic collapse to art mecca.

The Apollo Theater has been a cultural anchor on Harlem’s West 125th Street since 1934, and through its doors have passed the most legendary African American artists of the past nine decades. Academy Award-winning filmmaker and Tribeca alum Roger Ross Williams looks at the storied history of this iconic space while following the Apollo’s inaugural staging of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ acclaimed “Between the World and Me.” The Apollo Theater itself represents the ongoing struggle of black lives in America and demonstrates the elemental role that art plays in that struggle by highlighting the broad range of African American achievement that has been discovered, championed and thrived on its stage.

WEED THE PEOPLE US, 2018, 100 min. Cannabis has been off-limits to doctors and researchers in the US for the past 80 years, but recently scientists have discovered its anticancer properties. Armed with only these laboratory studies, desperate parents obtain cannabis oil from underground sources to save their children from childhood cancers. WEED THE PEOPLE follows these families through uncharted waters as they take their children’s survival into their own hands. Some of their miraculous outcomes beget the unsettling question at the heart of the film: If weed is truly saving lives, why doesn’t the government want people to access it?

ECHO IN THE CANYON US, 2018, 85 min. In the summer of 1965, the most popular song in America was the debut single by The Byrds. They were to be America’s answer to The Beatles. They weren’t. Instead they invented folk rock and attracted a generation of recording artists to Los Angeles. ECHO IN THE CANYON is a look back at the influence and the music of those artists (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & the Papas, the Beach Boys) from Southern California’s age of innocence (1965-1967), the beginnings of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon music scene and how the echo of these artist’s creations reverberated between each other and across to London (where it alters the course of The Beatles themselves.) The songs from that era provide an entry point as Jakob Dylan and a new generation of artists whose own body of work reflect the echoes of that pivotal time (Beck, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Cat Power and others), interpret and perform the songs paying homage to, and in many cases in front of, its authors.

Panelists include film and television industry professionals. Director and Executive Producer in attendance for Q&A.

THE FAREWELL US/China, 2019, 98 min.

After learning their beloved matriarch has terminal lung cancer, a family opts not to tell her about the diagnosis, instead scheduling an impromptu wedding-reunion back in China. Headstrong and emotional writer Billi rebels against her parents’ directive to stay in New York and joins the family as they awkwardly attempt to rekindle old bonds, throw together a wedding that only grandma is actually looking forward to, and surreptitiously say their goodbyes. A heartfelt celebration of both the way we perform family and the way we live it, THE FAREWELL masterfully interweaves a gently humorous depiction of the good lie in action with a thoughtful exploration of how our cultural heritage does and does not travel with us when we leave our homes. Writer/director Lulu Wang imbues THE FAREWELL with warmth and knowing wit, while the uniformly excellent ensemble cast (anchored by a breakout performance by Awkwafina) invites us to share this extended clan’s joy and sorrow—and to feel, for the length of this remarkable film, like a part of their family. THE LOAD

MS. PURPLE

OPHELIA

Premiering to rapturous reviews in this year’s Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, Ognjen Glavonić’s debut feature, THE LOAD, is a taut, suspense thriller. Set during the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, the story follows Vlada, a truck driver, who is hired to undertake a treacherous journey across a war-torn country to deliver a mysterious cargo.

MS. PURPLE is a drama about two Asian American siblings, Kasie & Carey, who grew up and are stuck in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Their mother abandoned them when they were young and they were raised by their father who is now on his death bed. They both have deep scars left from their upbringing that they are constantly trying to overcome as they struggle to navigate their own lives. Ultimately this story is about a mending of a relationship between a brother and sister and the regrouping of a family in the final days of their father’s life.

The classic Shakespearean tragedy is reimagined through a bold and new perspective, featuring Daisy Ridley (STAR WARS) as the title character. Naomi Watts and Clive Owen co-star.

SAINT JUDY

SHADOW

The Fikirtepe district of Istanbul. Urban transformation is sweeping away the poor communities and Syrian refugees take shelter in deserted buildings. Kamil and his wife Remziye risk losing their home. Unemployed for a long time, Kamil, has no choice but to secretly accept a job on a construction site. Not only is he taking the job from a Syrian refugee, he’s also working for the company that’s destroying the area next door. Oppression and anxiety both in his neighborhood, where he fears discovery, and at work, where he’s accepted the low wages paid to refugees, gradually transform him. When Kamil suddenly disappears, Remziye has to face the consequences of his actions, which do not fit the man she knows. But she will not give up.

SAINT JUDY tells the true story of immigration attorney Judy Wood and her landmark case that changed American asylum law forever. In her first case, Judy Wood represents Asefa Ashwari, an Afghan woman who fled her home country after being persecuted by the Taliban for opening a school for girls. While juggling her life as a single mother, Judy fights tenacious battles alongside Asefa, both in and out of court. Eventually, their efforts bring them before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where they succeed not only in saving Asefa’s life but, by changing the US Law of Asylum, the lives of countless women from around the world.

With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and grays punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow,” a lookalike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

One day Gianmaria returns from the nearest village with food supplies and with a boy and a girl, who are visibly exhausted after the four-hour walk from the village. But when he has to deal with a crisis situation, Frank makes a brutal decision and gets fired. THE ART AND TIMES OF FROSTY MYERS US, 2019, 64 min.

THE ART AND TIMES OF FROSTY MYERS, documents the career of sculptor Forrest “Frosty” Myers over the past half-century. Coming to New York City from San Francisco in 1961, he entered a rapidly changing art scene. American artists were ripping away established European traditions, replacing them with Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Minimalism, Conceptualism, Earth Art, Hard Edge painting and sculpture, and embracing Art and Technology. The cultural changes of the social justice movements and the anti-war protests were intertwined with the daily lives of Frosty and other artists. Their camaraderie at the famed New York City bar, Max’s Kansas City, created synergies in art, music and culture. These artists pioneered living and working in abandoned lofts and led the urban renewal in what became the downtown scene in lower Manhattan, Soho and ultimately Brooklyn. Frosty’s wide-ranging works include NYC landmark artwork “The Wall” aka the Gateway to Soho, “The Moon Museum” the first art placed on the Moon, and his radical furniture that blurred the lines of art and design. Frosty has produced a body of work that pushes all boundaries. Director // Chris Stearns

THE CAT RESCUERS US, 2018, 90 min.

At the heart of THE CAT RESCUERS is a question many of us have faced—what to do if you come across a starving or injured animal? For Sassee, Claire, Tara and Stu, all busy full-time professionals who live in Brooklyn, the answer was clear: they must help. At first none of them knew what they were doing, but they soon learned the tricks of the trade and, to their shock, discovered the problem was bigger than they had imagined: at least 500,000 abandoned and feral cats on New York City’s streets and the city doing little to address the problem. THE CAT RESCUERS follow Sassee, Claire, Tara and Stu night and day as they hit the streets, backyards and alleys of Brooklyn to save feline lives. As the film unfolds, it shows the extraordinary skill, resilience and humor these passionate urban heroes bring to this challenging work, and how it has changed their lives. Against great odds, they are making a difference. Directors // Robert Fruchtman, Steve Lawrence

DOG DOC

DON’T BE NICE

Called a maverick, a miracle-worker, and a quack, Dr. Marty Goldstein is a pioneer of integrative veterinary medicine. By holistically treating animals after other vets have given up, Goldstein provides a last hope for pet owners with nothing left to lose.

The upstart Bowery Slam Poetry Team, made up of five African-American, Afro Hispanic and queer poets in their 20s, prepares for the national championships. As their coach pushes them past their personal boundaries to write from a place of vulnerability, pain and honesty, the poets break down, break through and compose their best work ever. Timely and difficult, their spoken word slays—but will these soul searching pieces about police violence and the whitewashing of Black culture be able to compete against choreographed crowd-pleasers for the title? Will opting to make a statement instead of a show spell their defeat? An emotional and inspiring film that gives insightful commentary on race, gender, identity and sexual politics in America today, DON’T BE NICE is both an absorbing competition doc and a vital writer’s workshop that proves once and for all that winning hearts and minds is the ultimate prize.

DREAMING OF A VETTER WORLD

ECHO IN THE CANYON

Journey to the American heartland in Bonnie Hawthorne’s don’t-miss documentary, DREAMING OF A VETTER WORLD which features one visionary Nebraska farm family who understood that modern agriculture was ailing, and found a cure. From farmer’s son to soil scientist to missionary and back to farmer again, organic pioneer David Vetter has dedicated his life to a “ministry to the soil.” With camera and camper in tow, Hawthorne leaves her urban California comforts in the rearview mirror to learn from the Vetters about what’s really going on in the corn belt. As interest in regenerating soil explodes worldwide, Hawthorne discovers that David Vetter is way ahead of the game. With both historical context and an eye to the future, DREAMING OF A VETTER WORLD shows it’s possible to jump off conventional agriculture’s pesticide treadmill. It’s also a story about love, hope and place; an inspiring example of perseverance and doing what you know is right—against all odds.

In the summer of 1965, the most popular song in America was the debut single by The Byrds. They were to be America’s answer to The Beatles. They weren’t. Instead they invented folk rock and attracted a generation of recording artists to Los Angeles. ECHO IN THE CANYON is a look back at the influence and the music of those artists (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & the Papas, the Beach Boys) from Southern California’s age of innocence (1965-1967), the beginnings of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon music scene and how the echo of these artist’s creations reverberated between each other and across to London (where it alters the course of The Beatles themselves). The songs from that era provide an entry point as Jakob Dylan and a new generation of artists whose own body of work reflect the echoes of that pivotal time (Beck, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Cat Power and others), interpret and perform the songs paying homage to, and in many cases in front of, its authors. Dylan journeys to those who wrote the songs and discovers why they were written and what life was like in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon in the years before psychedelia and the birth of the singer/songwriter era. He uncovers never-before-heard personal details behind the recordings and those who made them popular.

ERNIE & JOE is an immersive look at the issues involved when the mentally ill and law enforcement collide. Part buddy film, part social commentary, and verite in it’s approach, ERNIE & JOE takes the audience on a personal journey, weaving together their experiences during their daily encounters with people in crisis. ERNIE & JOE are not your everyday cops. These officers wear polo shirts and jeans, conceal their weapons and emphasize deescalation, rapport-building and empathy. They are part of the San Antonio Police Department’s 10-person Mental Health Unit, founded to create a better way to deal with the fact that one in four people killed by police in the US has a mental health diagnosis. The Unit’s primary job is to help people in crisis—whether they are harming themselves, threatening suicide, experiencing PTSD or are one of the city’s homeless mentally ill—with force and with the aim of getting them into treatment instead of jail. FROM SHOCK TO AWE

GAY CHORUS DEEP SOUTH

HARVEST SEASON

FROM SHOCK TO AWE asks, “How do we heal our deepest wounds?” An intimate and raw look at the transformational journey of two combat veterans suffering from severe trauma as they abandon pharmaceuticals to seek relief in the mind-expanding world of psychedelics. Recent scientific research reveals that these substances can be used to heal PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). FROM SHOCK TO AWE also raises fundamental questions about war, the pharmaceutical industry and the US legal system. The documentary centers on veterans, Matt Kahl and Mike Cooley, and their challenging post-war lives, lives shattered by the trauma of war. The vets personally struggle with anxiety, fear, depression, anger and an overall inability to find an equilibrium in society and with their families. In order to deal with their erratic emotions and haunted state-of-mind, doctors prescribe intense pharmaceuticals with various side effects that bring them face-to-face with death. In response to the negative impact of traditional Western medicine, both vets begin to use cannabis as an alternative. Although beneficial on many levels, our heroes yearn for deeper healing. Mike and Matt decide to take ayahuasca, an Amazonian brew traditionally used for healing and spiritual insights. These warriors attend a weekend ceremony filled with hope...and fear of the unknown. Upon returning to home, they quickly learn that their families are not prepared for the rapid change. Unexpected twists and turns, and a desire to understand their husbands’ journeys, Aimee and Brooke embark on their own psychedelic healing journey with ayahuasca and MDMA respectively.

In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws in Southern states and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South. Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brings a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma; performing in churches, community centers and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. What emerges is a less divided America, where the lines that divide us—faith, politics, sexual identity—are erased through the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag.

Lush and luxurious, California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys are known for their topnotch wine making. The unsung heroes of the industry are the vineyard workers and small producers, who lovingly oversee all aspects of the wine-making process, from vine to vintage. Unfolding over the course of one of the most dramatic harvests in history, HARVEST SEASON follows three people whose lives are rooted in wine making, immersing the audience in the challenging and unpredictable process.

THE INFILTRATORS US, 2019, 93 min.

THE INFILTRATORS is a docu-thriller that tells the true story of young immigrants who get arrested by Border Patrol, and put in a shadowy for-profit detention center—on purpose. Marco and Viriare are members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of radical Dreamers who are on a mission to stop deportations. And the best place to stop deportations, they believe, is in detention. However, when Marco and Viri try to pull off their heist—a kind of ‘prison break’ in reverse—things don’t go according to plan. By weaving together documentary footage of the real infiltrators with scripted re-enactments of the events inside the detention center, THE INFILTRATORS tells this incredible true story in a boundary-crossing new cinematic language. The Hollywood Reporter said of the multiple award-winning film “rather than feeling like homework, watching it is a thrill.” Directors // Alex Rivera, Aldo Velasco

MIKE WALLACE IS HERE

NEW HOMELAND

ONE CHILD NATION

MIKE WALLACE IS HERE offers an unflinching look at the legendary reporter, who interrogated the 20th century’s biggest figures in his over 50 years on air, and his aggressive reporting style and showmanship that redefined what America came to expect from broadcasters. Unearthing decades of never-before-seen footage from the 60 Minutes vault, the film explores what drove and plagued Wallace, whose storied career was entwined with the evolution of journalism itself.

Every summer since 1914, Camp Pathfinder, a summer camp located on a small island in the wilderness of Canada’s Algonquin Park, invites a community of boys and young men from all across Canada and the United States to spend a few weeks in the backcountry learning how to camp, hike, canoe and fish. Two years ago Camp Director Mike Sladden, enraged by the tragic images from the growing global refugee crisis but inspired by Canada’s growing intake of asylum seekers, had an idea. What if he could find a way to bring a group of displaced boys from war-torn Syria and Iraq, who recently settled in Canada, to spend the summer at Pathfinder? If the camp experience could have such a profound effect on generations of boys already, imagine what it would be like for these refugee boys.

“China’s One Child Policy, the extreme population control measure that made it illegal for couples to have more than one child, may have ended in 2015, but the process of dealing with the trauma of its brutal enforcement is only just beginning. From award-winning documentarian Nanfu Wang (HOOLIGAN SPARROW, I AM ANOTHER YOU) and Jialing Zhang, the sweeping ONE CHILD NATION explores the ripple effect of this devastating social experiment, uncovering one shocking human rights violation after another—from abandoned newborns, to forced sterilizations and abortions, and government abductions. Wang digs fearlessly into her own personal life, weaving her experience as a new mother and the first-hand accounts of her family members into archival propaganda material and testimony from victims and perpetrators alike, yielding a revelatory and essential record of this chilling, unprecedented moment in human civilization.

THE RIVER AND THE WALL follows five friends on an immersive adventure through the unknown wilds of the Texas borderlands as they travel 1200 miles from El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico on horses, mountain bikes and canoes. Conservation filmmaker Ben Masters realizes the urgency of documenting the last remaining wilderness in Texas as the threat of new border wall construction looms ahead. THAT PÄRT FEELING

Germany/Netherlands/France/UK, 2019, 75 min. Arvo Pärt is is the most performed living composer in the world, but he is considered to be something of a recluse, and his person and work have rarely been documented on film. In this documentary we get to know Arvo Pärt as an artist combining an incredible sensitivity with humor and energy in his work. His reputation stems from his deeply-held belief that it’s not through words that a great artist communicates, but simply through music. Though he may seem reclusive in his person, what he wants to say and what he means is written in notes. Pärt is known for his minimalistic style that employs his self-invented compositional technique “tintinnabuli.” It is this harmonious, spiritual and minimalistic approach to music that forms the basis of THAT PÄRT FEELING—a feeling of wholeness, beauty and essence of being, embraced by millions of persons all around the world. Pärt’s intense collaboration with the Cello Octet Amsterdam is at the heart of this documentary, which sheds a bright light on Pärt’s universe. A universe not only inhabited by classical musicians like Tõnu Kaljuste, Candida Thompson or Daniel Reuss, but also by choreographers like Jiří Kylián, filmmakers like Alain Gomis and young musicians like Kara-Lis Coverdale. They are all looking for “that Pärt feeling.”

TONI MORRISON: TRUMBULL THE PIECES I AM LAND US, 2019, 119 min.

US, 2019, 110 min.

TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to 70’s-era book tours with Muhammed Ali. From the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

Douglas Trumbull is one of the forerunners of modern special effects. Everyone has seen a “Trumbull sequence” in Stanley Kubrik’s 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY, Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER or Steven Spielberg’s CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Director of two feature films— SILENT RUNNING and BRAINSTORM— which left their mark on sci-fi cinema, he’s still, at over 70, continuing his quest for innovation and keeps on dreaming of a cinéma which places spectators into the film. TRUMBULL LAND is an intimate portrait of Douglas Trumbull and a diving headfirst in his cinema.

WEED THE PEOPLE

THE WEIGHT OF WATER

Cannabis has been off-limits to doctors and researchers in the US for the past 80 years, but recently scientists have discovered its anti-cancer properties.

THE WEIGHT OF WATER is a story of a blind man balancing fear in the chaos of kayaking whitewater rapids...not to mention drowning and the powerful desire to be free from a prison of darkness. He embarks, paddling his own boat, into the most iconic whitewater in the world, the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Erik has already overcome some stunning challenges for both sighted and blind people, including climbing Mount Everest. Whitewater kayaking is different. The current moves unpredictably. The rocks that make up that canyon walls are unforgiving. The roar cuts him off from his guide’s voice and violent waves threaten his kayak. His friends are also in jeopardy as they fight for their own survival.

ASHES

DIG YOUR OWN GRAVE

NOWHEN

This is a story of a village kid, Dhruv. He is like any other kid his age—pure, playful, innocent and full of questions. His granddad is his constant companion— drops and picks him up from school, fulfills all his demands and tells him stories. One morning, Dhruv wakes up to see his granddad lying on the floor, wrapped in a white sheet, surrounded by people. He follows the people who carry his granddad on a stretcher to the river bank. The granddad now rests on a pile of wood and the pyre is lit. Dhruv has encountered death for the first time and his mind is full of questions. Raakh (Ashes) tries to delve into a child’s mind in the face of loss.

A hitman brings a down-on-his-luck guidance counselor into the desert to dig his own grave...but it turns out the ground is super hard and digging is WAY more difficult than it looks in the movies. As the day drags on, they learn about the fragility of the male ego, the myriad ways a small decision can destroy our lives, and how much it sucks to die in the desert.

Outside of Wrigley Field, a group of die-hard Cubs fans have attended years of games and only rarely entered the park. Instead they spend the innings on the corner of Waveland and Kenmore in the hopes of catching home runs in what they call the far outfield. Their shared passion has led to lifelong friendships and a community spirit harkening back to the early days of the game. In the fall of 2016, after a 100-year dry spell, the Cubs will play in the World Series and these Ballhawks have a chance they’ve only dreamed of—to catch a World Series home run ball.

In this experimental short, memories and symbols intertwine as a young girl reflects on the ‘survival manual’ her mother gave her. Through fragments of sounds and images from her childhood, she recounts the barrage of life advice she was given: from instructions on how to fit into society, how to stay safe, and how to live a fulfilling life. Alongside her mother’s practical instructions, the girl’s experience reveals the cultural, societal and familial expectations that are passed on through the generations. Director // Yasmin Rai

ART FOR ALL

In 2017, the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, New York turned 100. Over the course of that year, portrait painter Brenda Zlamany painted 100 of the residents. One hundred surprising, unique and inspiring stories emerged. Through the collaborative nature of the portrait process, this film focuses on the engagement between artist and subject. Elderly people in our society are often discarded, their stories unheard. We see in the film that as soon as the paint brushes come out, the conversations start. The film asks: What is important at the end of life? And what is the role of memory?

ART FOR ALL is a documentary short about the prolific Easthampton, Massachusetts painter Luke Cavagnac. The film takes you inside his Invisible Fountain art studio where he creates stream of consciousness work that’s accessible and affordable to the general public. The short explores Cavagnac’s beginnings, influences and methods, while highlighting many of his vibrant pieces.
