3 | Big Lake Community Education | Summer 2016
Step 3: Improving Our Facilit Bond is next step in addressing community-identified district priorities Step 3: Improving Our Facilities During the district’s yearlong process of gathering input from the community last year, three overarching priorities were identified: 1. Maintaining and improving academic offerings and technology 2. Taking care of deferred maintenance needs such as fixing leaking roofs, parking lots, and drainage issues 3. Improving our facilities with a focus on safety and security, playgrounds, and fine arts/athletics
Priority Needs Checklist Step 1: Academics & Technology Step 2: Deferred Maintenance Step 3: Facility Improvements
School Board & Community Action On November 3rd, the Big Lake community approved an operating levy for academics and a capital project levy for technology to address priority number one. On January 28th, the school board approved the sale of facility maintenance bonds, from which the proceeds will be used to fund deferred maintenance projects. These bonds have no additional tax impact on district residents, and the ability for the school board to approve them was passed last Legislative session. Also during January, the district hired an outside consultant to survey the community on its thoughts around a May 2016 special election for facility improvements. The school board used the results of this survey to confirm that facility improvements are still a priority for the community, and to identify what improvements are most important to the community. On February 25th, based on community feedback, the school board approved two questions for a May 24th special election to address priority number three, facility improvements: • Question 1: approval of $9 million in bonds to improve facilities districtwide focusing on safety and security, playgrounds, and fine arts/athletics • Question 2: approval of $1 million in bonds to construct a multi-purpose synthetic turf field
lities School board places two bond questions on May 24th ballot Question 1: approval of $9 million in bonds to improve facilities districtwide The proposed measure would fund:
$3.16
• Safety and security improvements including updating surveillance cameras and remodeling entrances to redirect visitors through the main offices of each building per month* • Expanding and improving playgrounds, and other site improvements like replacing worn out carpet • Fine arts and athletic facility improvements such as replacing outdated pool and auditorium equipment, adding permanent outdoor concession/restroom facilities, and installing ball field lighting
Tax impact on the average* district home: $3.16/month - use the tax impact calculator at biglakeschools.org/bond2016 to determine the estimated tax impact for your property.
Question 2: approval of $1 million in bonds to construct a multipurpose synthetic turf field The proposed measure would fund:
• Replacing the current football grass turf with a multi-purpose synthetic turf field that could be used for football, soccer, lacrosse, track and field and other sports
$0.42
per month*
Tax impact on the average* district home: $.42/month
Safety & Security - $1,115,000 Playgrounds & Site Improvements - $1,804,000 Fine Arts & Athletics - $4,336,000 Synthetic Turf Field - $1,000,000 Mechanical & Equipment - $1,162,000 Contingency & Misc. Costs - $583,000 *The average district home is valued at $175,000.
