Lutheran High School Association of St. Louis “'For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” – Jeremiah 29:11
Congratulations to the Lutheran North and Lutheran South Classes of 2016! The combined 190 students were offered $9.1 million in scholarships and grants and accepted $3.3 million over four years.
Though governance boards and their officers should work behind the scenes in anonymity, as this issue of the Herald goes to press, we are temporarily between Association Presidents, so I have the tremendous honor of sharing some thoughts to open this edition. My thoughts of late have encompassed both our past and our future. I am not a native St. Louisan, so our proud history may strike me more than it does some of you. This year, the Lutheran High School Association of St. Louis will celebrate its 70th anniversary. We have been providing outstanding education in a nurturing Christian environment for three generations. You may know families who have three generations of graduates at one or more of our schools. Given how dramatically our world has changed over this time period, how is this possible? I believe there are several key elements to this longevity. The constant and significant financial support of our Association churches and individual benefactors has certainly been a key factor from the beginning. I’m happy to say that support continues. Another factor, of course, has been the dedication of our teachers and staff to providing quality Christian education as part of the holistic development of our student population. Surely the most important key to our success has been the decades of seeking God’s will in our schools. God is at the center of every school day at Lutheran North and Lutheran South. God’s Word affects how each teacher, administrator and coach approaches their interactions with their students. This translates, slowly but surely, into our students as they develop as Christian leaders. I saw the faith of both my daughters grow, deepen and solidify during their high school years. Their faith is a fundamental part of who they are and their years in our schools are a significant reason for this. You will find examples of all these elements strongly at work in this issue of the Herald. Last year, we announced we had started a master planning process for the Association. This process continues as we study the data collected and seek to understand where God is leading us. Our goal is to lay the groundwork for executing our mission for generations to come with a reliance on those things that have sustained us for 70 years: our devotion to our students, strong benefactor support and always seeking God's will.

Honoring our role models Retiring from Lutheran North: Thank You Mr. Grupe! As Lutheran North science teacher Mike Grupe prepares to enter partial retirement, he recalls a few notable highlights while reflecting broadly on the changing educational environment he has witnessed over the years. He leaves Lutheran North after being a science teacher here for 34 years. It’s a vocation he first considered after his own high school experience proved to be less pleasant than he expected. “I went into teaching because I wanted to be a teacher that helped a student enjoy school just a little bit more,” Mr. Grupe said. “I wanted to help them survive high school.” After graduating from Concordia University, Nebraska, Mr. Grupe and his wife taught conversational English in Japan for more than two years before receiving a call to the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association. Three years later, Mr. Grupe became part of the faculty of Lutheran High School North, a school he would dedicate himself to for the next 34 years.
“You can do something for 30 or 40 years and never get tired of it,” Mr. Grupe said. “It’s a new experience every day, and a new group of students every year. I'm passionate about the things I teach. Students sense my passion and I think that helps motivate them.” During his time at Lutheran North, Mr. Grupe primarily taught Biology, Advanced Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology. He also coached JV Girls Basketball, and Girls and Boys Tennis. Some of his greatest memories include teaching his four children — Benjamin Grupe N ’99, Daniel Grupe, N’01, Philip Grupe N’03 and Rebecca Grupe Burnett N'06 — and meeting the challenge of earning students’ interest. “Sometimes, I did things to be unpredictable. That might be jumping up on a desk or speaking in Japanese,” Mr. Grupe said. “When students come back to visit, they remember the things that attracted

them to the class or that just made them think ‘This isn’t a bad place to me. This is actually fun.’” Mr. Grupe plans to work “Students sense part time for the Institute for School Partnership, my passion and I an organization within think that helps Washington University. He will also write curricula and motivate them.” design labs for scientists —Mike Grupe to take into middle school classrooms. In this way, Mr. Grupe's passion for science and secondary education will continue to inspire young students for decades to come.

Servants of the Word Answering God's Call

he seeds are planted early by the Holy Spirit, perhaps through the gentle urging of a teacher who tells you, “You would be a good pastor . . . teacher . . . DCE.” For 70 years, students in our schools have been surrounded by Christ’s love and trained up as Christian leaders, with many of them following God's call to become church workers. We’re celebrating with four of our alumni who answered the Holy Spirit's call to train as called and ordained servants of the Word, prepared to serve in public ministry as Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod pastors. Meet Micah Glenn N'02, Stephan Roma S’07, Adam Thompson S’07, May 2016 graduates of Concordia Seminary-St. Louis, and Noah Burgdorf N’08, a May 2016 graduate of Concordia Seminary-Fort Wayne.
MICAH GLENN N'02 Micah Glenn’s first call brings him to Lutheran North’s backyard. He will be bringing the Gospel to the people of Ferguson as the Executive Director of the new Lutheran Hope Center. His call is complicated in that he is actually a deployed National Missionary through the LCMS Office
of National Missions. He is called as a pastor to Grace Lutheran Chapel in Bellefontaine Neighbors, but his work will be in the community in the midst of people’s lives. “My ministry is going to be very difficult. I’m serving in the crucible of the racial tension in our country. And it happens to be my hometown. I look forward to bringing the Gospel, which is the only solution to any controversy, to Ferguson." Micah credits Lutheran North for preparing him for ministry in many ways. “Lutheran North literally changed my life, and the way that I look at life as a whole. I played football and ran track, which made me a team player and got me to realize that the needs of others should supersede my own. Group work in classes helped me realize where I needed help and where I could help others. One of the most defining moments came in my freshman year, when I was still struggling to take my education seriously. My academic advisor Ms. Durst (now Mrs. Storm) and I got into a fight where I was clearly wrong. After, she sat me down and basically told me that I was gifted and that I would either be a gifted criminal or a gifted member of society. And, it was that moment that made me want to thrive academically and be a good steward of
the gifts that God has given to me.” Micah and his wife Dorothy are asking for prayers for a smooth transition. “I’m stepping into an area in ministry I never thought I would be,” Micah says. “We’re moving, having another child and many other things. Pray that my family will stay healthy through all of these changes.” Micah knows that pastors everywhere need prayers and support. “Pastors are called to be above reproach for a very good reason, so that they can authoritatively teach the truth of the Word of God. But they are men. They are sinners who also need the forgiveness of God. Remember to forgive your pastor when he errs.” Micah's family includes dad Ellory Glenn N'73 and sisters Mirah Glenn Moore N'00 and Rachel Glenn Alcozer N'00.
STEPHAN ROMA S'07 In high school, Steve Roma realized there were people all around him pouring into him, teaching him about Jesus and how to walk as a follower of Christ. He knows that his experiences at Lutheran South, in Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) and through the many people who prayed for him, loved
< him and showed him who Jesus is through their actions and words contributed to the inspiration that led him to pursue the public ministry. Steve was ordained on June 12 in St. Louis, joining his dad, Rev. Ron Roma, campus pastor, guidance counselor and teacher at Lutheran South, and his brother Rev. Tom Roma S’04, who serves as the assistant pastor at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Clayton, North Carolina. Steve’s first call takes him to a beautiful area of California where he will be the sole pastor at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Santa Clara. “I have been called to this location first of all to serve the people of Resurrection, but secondly to revitalize a small struggling congregation in the middle of the Silicon Valley. The goal is to take the faithfulness, energy, and passion of the small contingent of faithful Jesus followers and work with them to focus their energy on bringing Jesus to their community.” Steve's family includes mom Cindy Schmaltz Roma S'76 and dad Rev. Ron Roma, campus pastor, teacher and guidance counselor at LHSS, and brother Tom Roma S'11.
ADAM THOMPSON S'07
Being surrounded by the love of Christ and encouraged in his faith during high school helped Adam to pursue training as a pastor. "Lutheran South's faithful and consistent small groups and chapel activities kept my mind on Jesus Christ and His Gospel. High school can be tough mentally, physically and spiritually and faithful habitual gathering where you can pray and worship and praise together kept my mind on the things of God. These good spiritual habits at LHSS, working together with my spiritual habits at home instilled by my parents, led me to where I am today."
and Rev. Ron Roma at Stephan's ordination.
NOAH BURGDORF N'08 Noah Burgdorf credits two Lutheran North teachers for the inspiration leading him to ministry. “It was because of Mr. McCollister (Mr. Mac) that I wanted to be a Lutheran history teacher and ended up going to Concordia-Wisconsin. He was so much fun to learn from and his passion for teaching was amazing. Mr. Weider had an impact upon me as he was very actively living his faith, eventually leaving to work as a missionary at a school in Indonesia." Adding to the excitement of Noah’s summer was his recent wedding to Danielle Persich. They are preparing for Noah’s first call as sole pastor to Salem Lutheran Church in Forest Green, Missouri. He’s looking forward to the challenges. “As part of being a sole pastor I do not specialize in dealing with a particular age group as a youth minister would. Instead the whole of the Church is where I specialize and it can be a challenge to frame the message of Christ in a manner that both
G
preschoolers and life-long Lutherans can understand.” He encourages prayer for pastors as one of the best ways to support them. “Never underestimate the power in a simple prayer, for prayer is calling upon the Lord most High and His power is infinite. Often times it is forgotten that pastors deal with many issues that are not seen in the public eye of the Church. It would be greatly appreciated if there would be prayers lifted for pastors involved in difficult private situations, that they may be resolved swiftly and peaceably.” Noah's family includes dad Erik Burgdorf N'75, uncle Dirk Burgdorf N'77 and aunt Rachel Burgdorf Pauluhn N'81.
OD IS CALLING . . .
"God has called all of us to be witnesses in the lives of those who he has placed in our lives. Whether you want to be a teacher, an engineer, a professional athlete, a weather man/woman, a police officer or firefighter, a garbage man/woman or a stay at home mother, God has called you to serve your friends and family in love with eyes and ears open to share the good news of Jesus with them. With that said, God has determined that the church is the place that He has decided to give you confidence of His presence, through His Word (scripture) and the sacraments (baptism, communion, and absolution). The church is in need of workers: pastors, deaconesses, Christian teachers, DCEs and secretaries. If you believe that God is calling you to work in the church, or if someone has told you that you would be a good church worker, please pursue it. Shadow your pastor, teacher or DCE. Ask questions, and most importantly pray that God leads you in what you should do."
— Steve Roma
Anwering God's Call
Like Steve Roma, Adam Thompson's dad is also in the ministry. Rev. Dr. W. Mart Thompson is pastor at Zion Lutheran in Pevely, Missouri. Adam will be taking his first call as Associate Pastor at Fairlawn Lutheran Church in Akron, Ohio.

Steve visited Lutheran North on April 12 to celebrate the 50th anniversary and speak with students and staff. He was honored as part of the inaugural class of the Crusader Hall of Honor last fall.

In April, Lutheran South hosted its third annual Special Olympics track meet for children with special needs. Nearly 200 children are paired with Lutheran South "buddies" who are their leaders, cheerleaders and helpers throughout the track meet day. The young athletes enjoy track events according to their abilities, lunch and the activities of Lutheran South's own "Olympic Village."
