Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) is the oldest student national council in Europe. Founded in 1901 as the Comitato Permanente Universitario (CPU), KSU is the prime motivator of student affairs on the University of Malta campuses. It is a dynamic organisation which represents all students attending the University (which includes the Faculty of Health Sciences, Medical School and the Malta Centre of Restoration) and the Junior College, a total of more than 13,000 students. Therefore, it serves as the official link between students and authorities.
KSU organises various events and activities throughout the year and, being an autonomous organisation, does not receive any funds aside those from sponsorships and activities. KSU also promotes student activism and seeks to cultivate an interest in students in a variety of fields, such as economic and cultural issues. KSU works on improving education at University and its faculties, institutes, schools and colleges, from time to time working on quality and level of education received, most notably the input given towards the law that increased student representation on campus. Over the past 110 years, KSU has been working on: - Representing students in whatever issues concern them, whether these are at campus, local, national or international level - Serving as an official link between students and relevant authorities - Increasing student representation and achieving democratisation of education in Malta
4
- Cultivating students’ interest in the educational and socio-political fields and issues - Coordinating cultural and social activities with other organisations - Providing day-to-day elementary student services such as laptop rentals and toga rentals - Pressuring authorities into assuring the highest level of quality in Further and Higher Education For more information on KSU and its services, feel free to visit www.ksu.org.mt.

MAXIMISE YOUR POTENTIAL Most of the discussions we are having are related to the immensely difficult moments which neighboring countries are finding themselves in. Truth is, each and every European without a job will be looking for employment in economies that are still trying to pull through (fighting) the worst crisis since the Great Depression. We live in a country which is bruised by the financial turmoil however, it has not destroyed us. We are living in an island state, a place where if everybody gets together for a common goal, we would be able to shape our destiny. This is what sets us apart from the afore mentioned countries where such a sense of community and belonging is harder to come by.
Andrea A. Attard public relations officer
As tough as the environment has been around us, through passion and commitment we can be even more resilient. As students of the University of Malta we can provide the spark that our country needs. We have the power to be part of scientific and technological advances, business and medical breakthroughs. We shouldn’t underestimate the power that each and every student has in the University community. There are opportunities which can shape your character and, moreover, shape other people’s lives in the process. Nothing comes easy, but if we are determined to improve a current situation, we will pull through.
opportunities I could have or what I could be achieving. I knew that I wanted to make a difference but I knew little of how to go about it. There is no greater individual wealth than good education, and I believe that we should always make sure to put all necessary education facilities on our primary policy agendas and make sure that they are within everybody’s reach.
When I first arrived on campus I had no idea of the differences I could make, the

non-corporate organisations has enabled these organisations to have access to skilled youths, with talents, opinions and attitudes that are being used to improve social engagement and the opportunity to impact the community on social and economical issues such as: entrepreneurship, social responsibility, people with disabilities, education, cultural understanding, emerging markets, and sustainability. The Science Students’ Society (S-Cubed) is a Faculty based student organisation which represents all students following a course under the Faculty of Science on University, national and international levels. Its main aim is to unite science students through educational and social activities which are organised regularly throughout the year. S-Cubed also works to encourage the development of an environment more conducive to the advancement of science and to extend its reach outside University to popularise science.
S-Cubed has an executive of science students from different courses within the Faculty that work voluntarily throughout the year to organise activities that will enrich students’ experience on campus. Events are held regularly and range from weekend science seminars and site visits to parties and outdoor activities. Additionally, S-Cubed publishes the magazine In Touch twice yearly with science related articles written by students and researchers. The full-colour magazine aims at communicating science through an informal language and provides the opportunity for students to share their experiences and interests. S-Cubed also seeks to broaden its international horizons both on an organizational level and for its students, through affiliations with esteemed science organisations such as the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institute of Physics (IOP) which offer a multitude of educational resources for undergraduates. This year, S-Cubed together with IAESTE Malta have teamed up with KSU for the first time to bring you a more comprehensive
‘KSU Business and Careers Forum’. S-Cubed always welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other student organisations, towards achieving a common goal and creating a stronger unity within the university student body. Through S-Cubed’s participation in this event the KSU B&C Forum is now also targeting students studying in the fields of science, engineering, and IT. S-Cubed is confident that through its contribution to this event, students will familiarise themselves with some of the opportunities available for them once they graduate.

IAESTE is a dynamic international non-governmental organization that coordinates the exchange of university students for paid work experience across a broad network of over 85 countries. Jobs are available for a period ranging from 6 weeks to 1 year in duration and the company or institution employing the student would provide the student with a decent wage. About 10,000 traineeship opportunities are exchanged yearly worldwide, mostly offering a technical work experience, but always directly related to the student’s area of study. Since 1984, IAESTE Malta has been providing job experiences to students from the University of Malta in Germany, UK, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Brazil, Slovenia, Hungary and Greece with prestigious companies such as IBM, Novartis, Philips, Siemens, British Telecom, BBC, Bosch and Ericsson. get in touch

IAESTE Malta believes that a full university life is not one restricted to lecture theaters. The organization offers plenty of opportunities for participation in a broad range of activities and events, which together with the academic aspect, help bring out the best in the student. IAESTE Malta also believes in the importance of exposure to the world of cultures and to a world without frontiers. Apart from the exchange program, active members have plenty of opportunities to participate in many international conferences and seminars all year round. Activities on and off campus are also quite common, with the IAESTE Annual Car Treasure Hunt that is held usually around April and which has been organized for 17 consecutive years so far being one of the main events. While enjoying a work-experience abroad, a student acquires practical skills, putting into practice what s/he has learnt in class. Exchange is offered on a one to one basis, a traineeship abroad being offered to a Maltese student for each job offered by a
Maltese company to a foreign student. Each year, IAESTE Malta endeavours to increase the number of job opportunities offered to students enrolled within the University of Malta as this would undoubtedly provide more students with invaluable experiences that will benefit them later on in their career. Furthermore, IAESTE Malta strives to bring students closer to the industries in which they will be working in the future by organizing events such as the yearly IAESTE Wine Night. Therefore this year, IAESTE Malta, together with S-Cubed, has also teamed up with KSU in its ‘Business and Careers Forum’. We wholeheartedly believe that events like these can only enhance students’ future employability prospects and should hence not be missed. IAESTE Malta is pleased that with this year’s ‘Business and Careers Forum’, KSU is aiming to target a wider range of students from various faculties, and hopes that these students make the most out of such opportunities.

Conscious of this, Business First offers professional guidance and advice to start-up companies, supporting them in this crucial phase of their business life. Indeed, startups are assisted to find their way among the various administrative requirements such as what application needs to be compiled, what documentation needs to be submitted and where, as well as other relevant matters. Significantly, Business First also gathers more than 50 Government services for businesses under one roof, thereby offering the possibility of fulfilling most of these same requirements from one central location. In so doing, Business First acts as a onestop-shop for businesses and saves time and avoids unnecessary running around for entrepreneurs, who can thus focus more on the operational side of their business. Amongst others, services related to registration for VAT and tax purposes, employment, utilities, VISA permits, licensing including several tourism-related licenses will be provided through Business First, with the full list being available on the dedicated website www.businessfirst.com.mt. Additionally, through Business First companies may apply for the wide range of schemes and incentives provided by Malta Enterprise to assist both local and foreignowned companies to set up, develop their business in Malta and possibly grow into foreign markets as well. required and, where possible, start offering such services. In this manner, Business First has also added some MEPA-related services through the hosting of a representative every Friday morning, while more services are expected to be added in the coming months. Business First services are provided within a stipulated delivery timeframe which in most cases does not exceed 10 working days, with a number of service level agreements being signed with the various departments and entities to ensure that this commitment is maintained. While Business First is assisting businesses of any size – from self-employed and micro enterprises, to small and medium-sized ones and even the larger companies – the service will be particularly beneficial for the smaller businesses which often have fewer resources available. The policy context is clear. SMEs are the backbone of the Maltese economy, with more than 35,000 SMEs representing more than 99% of local enterprises. Between them, SMEs employ nearly 90,000 workers and contribute over 70% of the national added value. Since its launch in January 2012, more than 9,000 contacts have been made with around 3,500 clients who sought Business First for assistance, mostly through e-mail correspondence on info@businessfirst. com.mt, visits to the Business First office in Guardamangia within the Malta Enterprise Head Office, and assistance over the helpline on telephone number 144.
