career’s convention 2015

what is ksu? Presently representing around 13,000 students, the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (University Students’ Council) is the oldest national student council in Europe. KSU was founded by Arturo Mercieca (later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca) in 1901, as the Comitato Permanente Universitario. The student union involved itself in student politics as well as national politics. Although times have changed since the organization’s inception, KSU’s aim remains unchanged; to foster and enhance the important contribution that each and every student can give to our University and Maltese society. KSU gives the student the opportunity not only to attend, but also to form part of University.

KSU’s Executive Committee is pushing forth the renewed emphasis that University is not simply an academic domain where one specializes within a particular field or profession, but a forum for exchange of experiences between students as well as one of the ultimate steps which complete the student formation process. Although in itself KSU is a dynamic organisation and therefore it is open for change and debate, like other organisations, it finds its roots in a set of fundamental objectives on which it was founded. Over the past 114 years, KSU has been working: •

• • • •

4

to represent students in whatever issues concern them, whether it is on a national or international level to serve as an official link between students and the relevant authorities
to achieve the democratisation of education in Malta
to coordinate activities with other organizations
to cultivate an interest in students in the fields of education, socio-political and cultural issues

time to think about your future KSU is determined to ensure that Careers Convention remains a not-to-be-missed event for all students who seek to explore career opportunities with some of the top companies on our island. There is much to be gained from meeting with prospective employers! Not in your final year of studies? Visit the Convention to learn more about career opportunities! Your end goal may not be to get a job for now, but companies may also be offering internships and summer programmes that would suit your schedule. This year’s Convention, unlike other years, will be split up into three separate sections: a Law, Business and Humanities tent; a Science and Technology tent set up in collaboration with the Science Students’ Society (S3) and IAESTE Malta and a General Recruitment Tent which will host the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) and EURES. With over 20 participants, there is surely something that will be of interest to you! Check out the official

programme too, as some of the companies will be holding workshops and talks to provide you with more information. Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind when visiting any Careers Convention or Job Fair: Drop your CV off with us online at ksu.org.mt/careers for us to forward to the respective companies! Watch your manners and mannerisms - no slouching, no yawning or fidgeting; no chewing gum or smoking. On the other hand, do make good eye contact, have a firm handshake and be clear and engaging when you speak. Keep in mind that employers are looking for students who are proactive, thoughtful and listen well. Be smart and ask the right questions-- do not ask questions you could easily answer by accessing their website or Facebook page. Remember, this is an opportunity to be evaluated on more than just your resume and without the formalities that come with an interview at the office of your prospective employer! So do not miss out on this chance, and get thinking about life after University. For more information about prospective job opportunities, log onto our ‘Vacancies’ portal on www.ksu.org.mt/careers

personal retrospectives

An exhibition worth visiting?

In the art world, a retrospective exhibition investigates the life and works of an artist and summarizes what one’s professional life as an artist would have added up to. In a number of pieces from the artists’ portfolio, the essence of the artists’ motivation, performance, energy and drive are exposed and exhibited. This is a summary of what that person stood for; what motivated them; what inspired them.

pro

andrew borg wirth

If you had to stop today, and have a retrospective of your own set up, not of artistic material, but of your achievements along the way, would you have material to exhibit? Is there a lot of what you’ve done, that you are proud of? Did you go the extra mile with anything you’ve done? We are each given the opportunity to excel in whatever we choose to do, and have the potential to rise above the competition. The organisations that will eventually employ us, are after the kind of people who acted upon this potential, taken the plunge, and made extraordinary whatever someone else would have done ordinarily. University is the perfect platform for this to take place. KSU is this year focusing on bridging the gap between University and the working world. Get involved in what we do, or anything else that can give you some added value, because the time we have on this campus is short, and the competition with those around us is ever growing!

s-cubed at the careers convention This year S-Cubed (the Science Students’ Society) has been working hard to promote science further, by taking education and science outreach to a whole new level. S-Cubed’s main aim is to promote unity among current and potential students of science through social and educational activities. S-Cubed, together with KSU and IAESTE, is this year taking part in the KSU Careers’ Convention, as it considers the future of science students after University life, very important. S-Cubed works hard to promote careers and job opportunities, organising Industrial Site Visits and internships. Very often, Faculty of Science Graduates find themselves thinking: “What do I do now that my time at University is over? What are the possible job prospects provided by the degree I’ve worked for during the past three or four years?” S-Cubed felt it was a duty of theirs to help tackle this situation, and started by educating future students of the Faculty, of job opportunities that holders of a degree in science come across. Early education is a concept central to S-Cubed’s ideologies and values, which the organisation feels strongly about. “Careers in Science”, was a talk held

8

Science: a fascinating and important field of study for humanity. early in Summer 2014, for students who had just finished their A-Levels and were wondering what to pursue at University. Four science graduates from the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Maths/Physics and Statistics spoke about jobs they took following graduation. The next step to tackle this situation was to provide current science students with an idea of jobs that their degree would lead them to. Industrial Site Visits to different companies, were integrated into the calendar of events so as to give insight of the working world to students. The first site visit was to Core Laboratories: Saybolt, a company involved in testing crude oil and its derivatives. Visits to other companies seeking science graduates, are in the pipeline. S-Cubed also felt that this year, particular emphasis had to be given to internship opportunities for both current and graduate science students, as the general consensus was that internship opportunities for science students were lacking and that students were not being provided adequate insight into different careers.

internships. bridging the gap Students are often faced with one big question How is university preparing me for my dream job? The (hopefully) short (but seemingly long) period after graduation and before finding a good job can be quite daunting for a budding professional. On top of that, an alarming number of students believe that university does not prepare them well enough for the real world; the world where missing deadlines means loss of thousands of euros. (That ‘F’ in Dr Borg’s test does not seem so bad now, does it?)

opportunities are exchanged yearly worldwide and are always directly related to the student’s area of study. Since 1984, IAESTE Malta has provided job experiences to students from our University, in Germany, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Japan, Kenya and Brazil to name but a few, with prestigious companies such as IBM, Novartis, Philips, Siemens, British Telecom, BBC, Bosch and Ericsson.

The problem graduates face seems rather perplexing. However, the solution is simple: Internships. These bridge the student and professional worlds. You can still enjoy the perks of being a student while getting real work experience. The opportunities up for grabs are numerous and various!

During these work experiences students acquire practical skills, while putting into practice the material learnt in lectures, and also build contacts and relationships with students who are likewise determined and motivated to go beyond the material learnt at university and take ownership of their career paths while enjoying the time spent travelling and meeting people from all over the world – which is in itself a very enriching experience.

IAESTE, the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience, is a dynamic international nongovernmental organisation that coordinates the exchange of University students for paid work experience across a network of over 85 countries. Job availabilities range from 6 weeks to 1 year in duration. About 10,000 traineeship

IAESTE Malta believes that its values and goals are very much in line with the objectives of KSU’s ‘Careers Convention’ and has therefore teamed up with KSU to bring companies based in Malta closer to the students. This event, just like internships, can only enhance students’ future employability prospects and should hence not be missed.

When it comes to writing a Curriculum Vitae (CV), there are other some useful tips one should keep in mind! career’s convention 2015

The number one rule is that your CV is accurate / remember that you will probably get caught if you state that you are fluent in French but can only say ‘bonjour’ and ‘oui’. Do showcase your achievements especially anything which is relevant to the job you are applying for. Make sure that your CV contains no spelling, grammar or syntax errors as this immediately gives a bad impression.. imagine being the applicant who ignored commas when describing your interests as “cooking dogs and interesting people”. Do tailor a CV to a specific job-- make sure the content is relevant to the job application, rather than sending the same generic CV to all companies. Keep it simple- your CV should be easy to read! Employers should be able to skim through it and get the general gist. Remember that CVs which are too long are boring to read! Include key information-- personal details including name, surname, address, phone number, email address and any professional social media presence should be clear. However, do NOT include unnecessary information such as a passport number. Do include your personal interests-- this is a reflection of your attitude and personality and shows that you have a life beyond work. Check and double check-- take a fresh look the next day and ask for a second opinion from a trusted friend or colleague.

Remember, a well-written CV will lead to an interview!

interview etiquette with jo caruana

How important are first impressions when going to an interview and what could one do to make an immediate impact? First impressions are absolutely vital. Remember that you only have, on average, 90 seconds to make that first impression – by which time the other person’s opinion is made up about you, and you will have to work pretty hard to change it. Confidence is a must, and that comes from preparation. When you’re going into an interview, don’t wing it – know exactly what the post requires, research the company, try to find out about the people you will be meeting and rehearse what you’re going to say.

18

When you walk into the room, be aware of your body language. Don’t hunch over or ‘close’ yourself up; this will make you appear nervous. Instead, focus on ‘opening’ your shoulders out, keeping your chin up, and smiling. I cannot stress how important it is to smile, as this will help you to appear confident, even if you’re nervous inside. Finally, extend your hand for a strong handshake, make eye-contact with your interviewer/s and politely introduce yourself by giving your name, surname and stating that you are very pleased to be there.

ksu.org.mt

What should one wear to an interview? Could you ever be over-dressed to an interview? My advice is to dress for the job you want, not the job you have. What you wear makes a huge impression and it says a lot about you. Are you shoes shined or scuffed? Do your clothes fit properly, or are they baggy/too tight? Are the colours muted and professional, or garish and offputting? Think about the choices you make; it’s important to look professional first and foremost, but don’t lose yourself either. Wear something that makes you feel confident – this is the day to put on your favourite suit or to dig out that designer skirt. And yes, you can be overdressed. When it comes to colours, stick to a maximum of three; and don’t wear any more that four accessories at a time – that includes your belt, scarf, earrings, bracelet etc; keep things simple and chic. Interview day is not the day to wow people with your wardrobe – you are selling yourself and your skills, so your clothes need to complement you, and not the other way round.

I’ve heard people say that employers already get a sense of a person from a mere handshake. What would be the ‘perfect’ handshake? Great question. A limp handshake is the most off-putting thing in business. It may seem extreme, but it implies a weak personality. I often spend hours working with our students on getting their handshake just right. In a nutshell, you need to show confidence (but not arrogance). Extend your hand, keeping your arm almost-straight and bending your hand at the wrist. Take the other person’s hand with strength (but don’t over-do it – this is not the time to prove those hours at the gym are working) and ensure that the skin between your thumb and first fingers fits snugly inbetween theirs – there’s nothing worse than a handshake that stops at the fingers. Shake their hands two-to-three times at this point, while maintaining eye contact at all times. And you’re done.

19

career’s convention 2015

What kind of attitude should one take when people sit for an interview? Would employers prefer modesty or self-confidence?

It’s a fine line. When I interview people, or work with trainees on interview skills, I want them to reach a middle ground. There is nothing worse than someone boastful who comes in and tells you how they are going to revolutionise the company. Don’t make your interview all about you; you need to be an asset to the company, not to bulldoze it will your brilliance. If you think you are brilliant, you have a lot to learn. On the other hand, taking the über humble approach won’t gain you much ground either. The best advice I can offer is to listen – really listen – to the questions you’re being asked.

20

The interviewer probably won’t care that you got an A in you’re A’ Level and that your mum thinks you’re THE BEST at EVERYTHING, but s/he will want to know how your skills can be applied in this position. Show that you are interested. Show that you are willing to learn and excited by this opportunity, and explain why you deserve for this person to want to pay you a wage each month.

ksu.org.mt

Are there any other useful tips that you think are essential? Want it. When you want something, it shows. Nothing is more attractive in a candidate than their desire to work for your company.

Perhaps one of the best teasers you can get about working abroad is through Erasmus+. We have all heard about it, but few know the extent of its reach. Erasmus+ not only tackles study semesters abroad but is a programme dedicated to increasing mobility. In fact, it can give you the opportunity for a traineeship abroad. Ranging from 2 - 12 months, it is the perfect opportunity for you to gain some experience in working abroad before taking the mighty leap of faith. There is a wide array of traineeships available, ranging from training centres to universities, NGOs and private companies. Such traineeships can be applied for through the University of Malta International Office, who will be more than happy to help you out.
