KSU?
Welcome to the Careers & Research Expo: one of the largest events that KSU organises on campus! The duty of KSU remains not only to act as a bridge between students and the University but also to provide students with all the necessary tools to equip themselves for their future.
What is
Presently representing around 13,000 students, the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (University Students’ Council) is the oldest national student union in Europe. KSU was founded by Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca in 1901, as the Comitato Permanente Universitario. The student union involves itself in student politics as well as national politics. Although times have changed since the organisation’s inception, KSU’s aim remains unaltered: to foster and enhance the important contribution that each and every student can lend to our University and Maltese society. KSU gives students the opportunity not only to attend, but also to form an integral part of their University.
Careers & Research 2017
KSU’s Executive Committee is pushing forth the renewed emphasis that University is not simply an academic domain where one specialises within a particular field or profession, but a forum for exchange of experiences between students as well as one of the ultimate steps which complete the student formation process. Although in itself KSU is a dynamic organisation and therefore open for change and debate, like other organisations, it finds its roots in a set of fundamental objectives on which it was founded. Over the past 110 years KSU has been working:
•
To represent students in a variety of issues concerning them, whether on a national or international level;
•
To serve as an official link between students and the relevant authorities;
•
To achieve the democratisation of education in Malta;
•
To coordinate activities with other organisations and;
•
To cultivate an interest in students in the fields of education, socio-political and cultural issues.
Social Policy Office Etienne Buttigieg Alexander Hili
T
his aim has remained constant through all the one hundred and sixteen years that KSU has been in existence, and it is our intention to deliver upon this duty in the form of such events. The duty of KSU remains not only to act as a bridge between students and the University but also to provide students with all the necessary tools to equip themselves for their future.

he promotion and presence of research on University Campus is growing, and this is something that the KSU Education Office are proud and excited to see happening. Research is an important part of life at University, as well as the working world and the growing emphasis placed on research reflects this. For the first time KSU is holding an event which allows University students and academics to present their own work and view the work of others. The KSU Research Days will hopefully serve as an opportunity to start discussion and awareness

i, I’m Andrew Gauci – a software engineer, a passionate entrepreneur, and recently the founder and managing director of Imagina. At Imagina we are a Maltese technology start-up focused on providing innovative game solutions for the online and casual gaming
markets. Most importantly, Imagina is a place where technology enthusiasts are encouraged to innovate, learn and explore ideas in a highly creative market. The company’s vision was forged by ideas coupled with frustrations. These ideas revolved around the lack of generic and

customised solutions for game development in online gaming. My frustrations came from the usual bureaucracy and politics working at any traditional company of non-trivial size. I believed in my ideas, I was sure that there was a better way for technologists to develop quality solutions, and therefore I set my mind to give life to my vision. Clearly, it is easier said than done. Endless nights, countless weekends and innumerable hours were spent researching the market, writing business plans and dealing with investors, all the while risking that no one buys into the vision. Nevertheless, beyond the hardships, tireless work and uncertainty, the feeling when obtaining the go ahead from investors that Imagina should live made it all worthwhile. Of course, that was not the end of

the story. Weeks of negotiations, business proposals and contract reviews ensued. Nevertheless, every process comes to an end, with

and requires great effort, but fortune does indeed favour the bold. Believe in your ideas, work harder than ever, research and keep true to your principles. Irrespective of the outcome, being involved in a start-up is one of the most enriching experiences of your career – you won’t regret it.

SOFT w SKILLS ARE YOUR STRENGTH
split into two categories: hard and soft skills. The arduous years of study you invest in order to obtain your University qualification leave you with a set of
hard skills. These are technical and practical expertise which form the foundation of your professional life, enabling you to become a teacher, engineer or lawyer, for example. Soft skills are personal aptitudes which are sought after in the workplace. These include effective communication skills, good work ethic and being a team player. Soft skills help bridge the gap between hard skills and the reality of the workplace. They enable you to convey your knowledge, ideas and concerns in an articulate way - whether you are presenting a report to your manager or steering the department under your responsibility in a new direction. An absence of such skills leads to untapped potential.
On the look out... Employers are on the lookout for soft skills in prospective employees. Soft skills are important in any industry. They enable an organisation to function effectively and maintain a high degree of professionalism when interacting with customers. Today, companies are shifting away from a 'selling' mentality and are focusing on providing a service to customers. This shift requires effective listening in customer relations, problem solving skills and the ability to envision future issues. These aptitudes are, in part, the fruit of a good set of soft skills. Any soft

skills you have should be showcased in your CV, but they must also be backed up by concrete proof. For example, link leadership skills with time spent volunteering in a student organisation, or communication skills with a debate you participated in. The soft skill set on your CV will come to life

Any job requires a level of trust in the employee. You must show you are able to do what you promise to do, within the timeframe you commit to.
02
/ COMMITMENT
Commitment is learnt through practice. Employers need people who are committed to their job, the company and hard work.
03
/COMMUNICATION
Essential for interaction with colleagues and clients. This includes listening to and not just hearing what other people have to say.
04
/MOTIVATION
This involves being able to take the initiative, remain motivated and complete a task.

Are you capable of shouldering accountability and guiding colleagues if the need arises?

BUILD YOUR SKILL SET
BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE SOFT SKILL SET IS AN EXCITING STEP IN PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. IT INVOLVES TAKING STEPS TO GET TO KNOW YOURSELF AND TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF. Take a class. Learn a new skill or nurture an existing talent, even if it is not directly related to your professional field. Do not limit your personal growth to your profession alone. A wider skill set opens opportunities for the future. For example, studying for a technical or liberal arts degree does not bar you from taking a course in entrepreneurship which could help you start up your own business endeavor or feel more confident in a management position in the future. Start a new hobby. Serious hobbies require commitment and time management. When listed on a CV, they help employers see you as a multifaceted person. Take up a sport. Practicing a sport, like a hobby, teaches you commitment. Sports can also bolster personal resilience. Environments which encourage sportsmanship urge competitors to show respect and fairness towards others. These attitudes can positively influence your behavior at work. Team sports in particular foster the development of social skills.
Careers & Research 2017
Work with a student organisation. Student activism is important for the well being of the entire student body and will lead you to character building experiences. Leadership skills can be built through administrative roles, participation in committees and event organisation. Alternatively, you could contribute to a student magazine. Short term volunteer opportunities also arise in the run up to landmark events in the campus calendar, such as festivals and conferences.
Explore drama and the arts. An oncampus drama production or concert requires a whole army of different skill sets to be realised. The performing arts are important character and confidence builders, so why not challenge yourself to an audition? If you prefer to stay out of the limelight, every production requires a background crew to oversee everything from the creation of sets to operating equipment. Participating in these events pushes you to exercise dedication, flexibility, time management and conflict resolution. Take on a personal challenge. Train for a marathon or charitable walk. Embrace the travel bug and plan a trip – be it a round-trip of Gozo or of Asia. Taking up a personal challenge propels you to learn to plan. Completing the challenge requires self-motivation and commitment. At the end you will have deeper knowledge of you abilities and limitations and a better understanding of how to react to unexpected situations.
Speak out. Participate in public discussions. There are local forums and debate clubs which focus on topics from various fields, ranging from politics to technology. Participating in such events helps you learn to think critically, build an argument and stand your ground, all whilst respecting opposing views. A wide soft skill set provides a solid basis for personal and professional development. Do not let apprehension hold you back from building a stronger skill set. After all, you are only as strong as your Achilles heel. Good prioritisation will help you find the time to strengthen your soft skills. By actively working on communication, time management and conflict resolution, you will be able to stand out in a highly competitive job market. When it comes to personal development, jump into the deep end; you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Volunteer. There is a vast selection of volunteer opportunities available. Local openings include: working with children or the elderly, teaching lifeskills to people from disadvantaged backgrounds, looking after animals and safeguarding the environment. The Chaplaincy and the European Voluntary Service also offer volunteer opportunities overseas. Some initiatives require a one-off contribution while others require a long-term commitment.
