With over 70 nominations from all walks of local life, including the public and private sectors, our discerning panel of judges has settled upon 40 of the Kitsap Peninsula's most outstanding individuals to be honored as our "40 Under Forty" Class of 2007. This exceptional group will undoubtedly become part of the next generation of "movers and shakers" — that select few who will determine what this place we all treasure will become, and who will shape its destiny. From all the materials the judges have reviewed, it is extremely obvious that our future is in good hands!

He continued as CFO until his selection as President in 1998. Rex began his banking career with The Arizona Bank and The Oregon Bank prior to moving to Washington state in 1983, when he accepted a commercial lending position with NorthWest Bank in Seattle. Key Corporation acquired NorthWest Bank in 1987, and Rex continued with Key in several different lending capacities until accepting the position with American Marine Bank. Rex has played active roles in banking industry associations such as Bank CEO Network, Independent Community Bankers Association and

JCM Property Management is a full service commercial broker that offers services such as permitting, on and off site project management, full service property management, and commercial sales and leasing. Jeff is the current president of the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County (HBA) and was the Builder Member of the Year for the HBA in 2006. In his spare
Commissioner Jan Angel time, Jeff enjoys volunteering for the Kitsap Cowpokes, a fundraising arm of the local rodeo. He was also a past board member for the fair. Commissioner Jan Angel — In 2008, Jan will have spent 40 years in the business world! After college, Jan spent 14 years in commercial banking beginning in Colorado. She then moved to Alaska, where she became the first woman commercial loan officer in Anchorage. She was active there in the National Association of Bank Women and served as Alaska State President and later, was elected one of eight to the National Board of Directors. In 1983 she moved to Port Orchard and ran her own business, “Angels Hair Attractions,” for 9 years. Todd Hankins Financial Advisor Merrill Lynch Age: 28 Todd Hankins, financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Kingston, started his first business at the ripe old age of 10. It started out as a lawn mowing venture, but before long, he had hired all his friends and was running a full service landscape operation. As the first person in his family to graduate

from college, Todd learned at a young age how to make goals and achieve them. He now makes it his goal to meet, help, and work with as many good people as he can. Todd is very active in the Poulsbo Yacht Club, hosting gatherings once a month to raise funds. Todd’s words of advice: “The people who are most important in your life are only here for a little while. Spend as much time as you can with them and appreciate them because time slips by much too quickly.”
Steven Haws feels that his career helps him to be a better husband and father, and that his family helps him to be a better dentist at the Silverdale Clinic. The two certainly go hand-in-hand for this young man, who grew up with the saying “Whether you think you can or, think you can’t, you’re right.” Upon graduation from Brigham Young University with a degree in Zoology, he was
accepted into the University of Iowa College of Dentistry on a 4-year research scholarship. He completed his one-year residency with the U.S. Air Force, then served two more years at the Beale Air Force Base in California before moving his family to Silverdale. Steven volunteers with Smile Mobile, a mobile dental unit that travels to a new community in Washington each week, providing dental care to needy children. He is also the scout master of Boy Scout Troop 1590. Steven says people would be surprised to find out that he has a bit of a sweet tooth. “This is not a good thing for a dentist,” he said.

When TJ wrote his first book, he had yet to obtain a formal office, so he used to park at Albertsons for eight hours a day and sit in the back seat of his car to write. Common Threads Bind Honorees Family. Community Service. Faith. Learning the value of a dollar. Literacy. These are among the common threads that ran through many of the 40 Under Forty application forms. A number of our 40 Under Forty honorees cited Rotary and the Boy Scouts as their passions. Rotary offers the opportunities to not only give back to the community, but to help those in need in other places in the world. The Boy Scouts demonstrates a unique sense of community camaraderie and is the absolute personification of learning, while giving back to the community. And there are other passions as well, most of which have been forged by exceptional and personal life experiences. “I believe education is key not only to a child's personal success but to a better future for those ahead and behind him/her,” says Stacey Ames, “Many times in my support of education I have heard, ‘My kids no longer go to school so why should I support whatever cause’ Those children in school today will be the ones to become nurses, doctors, bankers, lawyers, sales people etc. that I will come into contact with as I age.” This, from a single mother of two daughters, one adopted. Others share strong passions closer to home. “I help with Thursday's Children which is an organization that feeds the homeless people in Kitsap. I hate to see anyone in pain...in any way, especially children,” says Sarah Nilsen about her community involvement. Along with strong communities, this year’s class believes in strong homes, literally. “I have enjoyed helping Rebuilding Together,” declared Phil Cook. “Every year here in Kitsap County I have the opportunity to help those people who are not able to fix their homes, or may have special needs and cannot afford to make the accommodations to their homes to meet those needs.” Tawnya Hayes shares the belief of a strong home. “Recently I partnered with the Habitat for Humanity Family Selection Committee. We screen all applicants and make recommendations to the board of directors on those families that will move into the new homes built by Habitat for Humanity. It amazes me what this organization does for people and their families...It truly changes lives and I'm proud to be a part of it.” But Vickie Lawrence may have summed up what is striking about the volunteer efforts of this year’s class the best, “Anything to do with giving back to the community that has given me so much.” Besides understanding the responsibility of giving back to the community that gave them the opportunity to succeed, many of our honorees also noted how their families taught them to think
independently and how hard work has its own rewards. Those aren’t just monetary, but also include the self-satisfaction enjoyed by a job well done, as well as the rewards achieved by not being afraid to follow their dreams. Amy Igloi-Matsuno started her entrepreneurial ventures at a young age. “I was 10 years old and wanted to find a way to make money,” Amy said, “So, I started thinking about what I could sell people that they didn't already have but I could easily get... I didn't find anything in the house so I poked around the yard and found cool rocks in the ravine behind my house. I carefully washed them, thought out a great sales pitch and voila, I was in business!” TJ Hoisington got the itch at age 16 to follow his dream of owning his own company. After owning two multi million-dollar companies and working with Tony Robbins, motivational speaker and coach, TJ said, “After a year I decided it was time to stop making excuses and go out and live 'my own dream’. So, in 2000, I left the Tony Robbins organization and started the company I now operate and have been thriving ever since. I absolutely love what I do!” Success is measured at many levels and Rodika Tollefson’s career and family experience may have taken her to a different level that some may never understand. “My track was to become a writer for a national news magazine within 10 years of my career start, but that changed as fast as the Northwest weather when I realized how that would impact my family. Now I know success comes in many sizes, and you can be successful on a smaller scale, in your own community.” But perhaps the entire entrepreneurial mindset was articulated best by Rebecca Charbonneau, who said, "Looking back over the past 6 years, just seeing the progress and what I have learned – that is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Looking at where I started, to where I am today, and what I know now is something to be proud of. The Candy Shoppe is a store that I am proud of. And that I can call it mine! That is an amazing feeling.” Our 40 Under Forty honorees obviously understood that basic philosophy at a relatively early age, and it has brought them to this place in time. Some people never understand it — and that is often the simple difference between leaders and followers.

Amy Igloi-Matsuno General Manager/Owner Amy’s on The Bay Age: 26 Amy Igloi, general manager and owner of Amy’s on the Bay, started thinking about making money at a young age. Her sense for business has only become sharper
Jannae Mitton Jolibois First American Title Insurance Co. Gig Harbor Branch Manager/Sales Representative Age: 34
Jannae Mitton Jolibois has done her share of traveling, but the Gig Harbor native has talent to spare in our region, too. As a student at the University of Washington, Jannae spent three months in Ecuador. Upon graduation, she traveled to Africa, working for the Peace Corps
with time. One day while visiting Port Orchard, she and her then fiancé, now husband, looked at the late restaurant JJ’s on the Bay, which was up for sale at the time. Less than 30 days later, the restaurant was hers. She now works 65-70 hours a week managing the business, yet somehow she still finds time to volunteer as the Military Affairs Chairman for the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce. In her spare time, Amy enjoys playing soccer and she has spent hundreds of hours working with abused children through the Tulalip Tribe Outreach Program.
and Lutheran World Relief for two years. Her local accomplishments are no less impressive – at the young age of 34, she has worked her way up in the title and escrow business to become branch manager of First American Title Insurance Co. Gig Harbor. Somehow, though, Jannae still has time to donate to charitable causes. She is a board member of the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, and has chaired their Basket Social for several years running, an annual event which has earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for The Harbor History Museum.

She donated all new window coverings to the Poulsbo Marine Science Center, and also works with Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap. Jenni’s husband Nathan is also a 2007 40 Under Forty winner.
this is why the Budget Blinds franchise in Poulsbo consistently ranks in the top five in the nation, an impressive feat when you consider that they’re up against over 1,300 other franchises across America. Just as impressive is the fact that their Closet Tailors franchise is consistently ranked #1 in the nation. Nathan views each day as a new learning experience. Nathan is passionate about his company’s community ventures, and has donated window coverings to organizations such as Kingston CoOp Preschool and Habitat for Humanity.

Eric Miller Doctor/Owner Miller Chiropractic Age: 34 Eric Miller of Miller Chiropractic says that he wishes he had known earlier how to run a business. This is surprising, coming from the 34-year-old doctor who started his own practice four years ago and has been very successful ever since. He graduated from South Kitsap High School before moving on
in Texas, but joined the Army after only 12 weeks of work, deciding that the daily newspaper business wasn’t a good fit for him. Charles worked several odd jobs when he got out of the Army, but when he finally wound up at the Patriot, he felt he had found exactly what he was looking for in a job. Charles and his wife have chosen the Red Cross as their family volunteer organization. Charles says that most people would be surprised to find out he is naturally a shy person, despite the fact that he puts on a bold, outgoing face.
to attend Washington State University. He then graduated from Life West Chiropractic College. He believes that “Everyone deserves to be healthy and express their full potential.” This is why he works directly with the nervous system to help the body restore itself to normal function. In his free time, Dr. Miller is involved with the Rotary Club of South Kitsap and he gives community lectures on topics such as The 100 Year Lifestyle, Raising a Drug Free Family, and Human Potential.
Surprising Tidbits “I helped save a man's life by pulling him out of his burning truck after he crashed into a big rig on the highway. Along with 3 others, I was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the California Highway Patrol and the Santa Maria City Council passed a resolution in our honor.” – Todd Hankins “I think that most people would be surprised to know that I have sweet tooth. This is not a good thing for a dentist.” – Steven Haws “I love stock car racing and I am an avid NASCAR fan!” – Kym Mason “I am fluent in Chinese. I majored in Chinese Studies and Chemistry in college. The Rotary club gave me a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship to study Chinese in Gaoshiung, Taiwan.“ – J. Chris Bock “I enjoy playing a large tuba-like instrument called a euphonium.” – Erika Colson “I'm known as a pretty decent athlete so most people would be surprised to know my wife kicks my butt at bowling nearly every time or maybe that I worked for NASCAR legend Junior Johnson for a day at the Atlanta race. (I still have the pay stub to prove it!!!).” – Brian Nilsen

David Nelson Broker/Owner Windermere Commercial Bainbridge Island Age: 38 David Nelson was born and raised on Bainbridge Island. office in Poulsbo soon. Although he admits to occasionally dancing to the theme of Law and Order, while in the courtroom he lives by a rule of professionalism taught to him by a college professor: “Kill them with kindness.” Meaning that when confronting a hostile witness, he feels it is more effective to ask questions with confidence and calmness, rather than cockiness and aggression. He says that nothing makes him more proud than to see his two daughters, Peyton and Liliana, succeed and discover truth on their own.

Brian Nilsen Vice President Brothers Powersports Age: 37 Brian Nilsen, VP and General Manager of Brothers Powersports, entered the family business back in 2001. The company has a rich history; it has been family owned and operated since its inception in 1949, at which time they sold appliances before diversifying in the ‘60s to motorcycles. It may not surprise you, therefore, to learn that Brian’s first job was assembling motorcycles and lawnmowers at

the age of 13. From there, he went on to graduate from South Kitsap High School and earn his B.A. from Washington State University. Soon thereafter, he worked on a NASCAR pit crew before starting his own wholesale appliance business, which he operated for five years prior to starting at Brothers. The experience of starting a business from scratch has been one of the most rewarding of his life, second only to his family. is also a recently published author. Her book, Does This Book Make My Butt Look Big? (And Who Cares Anyway, It’s My Butt!) uses personal anecdotes from Sarah to challenge the reader to see life as fun rather than a chore. Somehow among all that, Sarah still finds time to be involved in the community. She volunteers at Thursday’s Children, an organization devoted to feeding the homeless of Kitsap County, and coordinates events for her church, New Life, which centers around helping people find their “place” in church. Her husband Brian is also a member of the 40 Under Forty Class of 2007.

How Our Honorees Earned Their First Dollar From odd jobs as children to first jobs as teenagers, earning that first dollar is one of those lifetime memories that this year’s class enjoyed sharing. Rodika Tollefson had one of the most unique stories because she grew up in Moldova. “It wasn't actually a dollar--it was a ruble, the old currency in the country where I grew up. I worked in a factory when I was in 8th or 9th grade. My first ‘American dollar’ was earned on a student job in college as a receptionist.” We should all be glad that Shiloh Schroeder didn’t take her first earned dime as a great career starter to being a professional burglar. Shiloh said, “I believe I got a dime for climbing into our house through a window when my parents accidentally locked us out.” Mike Eliason was able to work at a young age due to his mother. “I delivered the Kitsap SUN newspapers at the age of 11. I was too young to have the route in my name, so my mother retained the account in her name while I delivered the papers and accounted for the funds.”
Along with making that first dollar comes that first interview and Allisha McVay nailed hers on the head. “Like many Americans my first job was at McDonalds! I started there when I was fifteen years old. During my interview I told them I loved their hamburgers,” Allisha said. One of this year’s winners may not have had the best sense about how to save his hard earned money at a young age, but he sure had fun spending it. “My first job when I was 16 years old was a cashier clerk for the Balboa Pharmacy in Newport Beach, California, which was fortuitously located only one block away from the video arcade,” Isaac Anderson said. When Laney Kallio was asked how she earned her first dollar, you just couldn’t help but laugh at her story. “My very first dollar? Besides the lemonade stand... I think it was at Marina Mart down off of Bay Street. I worked as the deli cook and got fired for making such a big mess with the flour. The fried deli chicken market has never been the same since.”

John Thayer Owner/Luthier J. Thayer Guitars Age: 23 John Thayer of J. Thayer Guitars has accomplished more in his 23 years than many accomplish in a lifetime. His official title is “Luthier,” or instrument-maker. Another key word to describe him is “Entrepreneur,” as he owns and runs his own business, producing a highend line of handcrafted acoustic guitars. John began his craft in high school, before moving on
Rodika Tollefson Executive Editor Key Peninsula News Age: 34 Rodika Tollefson, for whom English is her third language, is a professional writer, journalist, and editor. When Rodika was hired at Key Peninsula News in 2002, the paper had been shut down. She quickly recruited new staff and volunteers, and within weeks, the paper was printing again. Since that time, the paper has grown in staff (now with over two dozen contributors), budget (quadrupled

since February 2003) and size (the page count doubled to 40 pages). In addition to her responsibilities with Key Peninsula News, Rodika freelances for local newspapers and various clients, all while being a mother of three. According to Rodika, “the ‘superwoman’ is a myth. Motherhood changes career plans in a flash… My track was to become a writer for a national news magazine within 10 years, but that changed as fast as the Northwest weather when I realized how that would affect my family. Now I know – success comes in many sizes, and you can be successful on a smaller scale, in your own community.”

John’s business, located in Bremerton, has built guitars for Jeff Tweedy of WILCO and a member of the band MXPX. John also immerses himself in volunteer work. He has spent time working for Habitat of Humanity in both Kitsap County and Mexico, and he is looking forward to leading youth from his church to build an orphanage in China.
