After being honorably discharged, Stephen was hired by the Tacoma Police Department. Driven by his interest in housing and land, Stephen decided to take the state real estate exam, which led him to his current career. Stephen believes, "Life isn't about achieving material things, it's about spending time with the ones you love and love you."
Kathleen's favorite quote is, "Will it matter in five years?" and she wishes she would have learned earlier "not to take life too seriously and to enjoy each day." Kathleen is heavily involved in the community. With too many activities to list, some of her time is spent with the South Kitsap Soccer Club, Washington State Youth Soccer Association, Kitsap County Parks & Recreation Sustainability Task Force, Citizens for Improving Long Lake and Mullenix and Olalla Elementary schools.
Congratulations To the 40 Under Forty Class

Personally, Valerie is most proud of her family, but says, "On a professional note, I take great pride in being a part of the Hospice of Kitsap County team, who made this community's first and only inpatient hospice a reality." What Valerie learned at a young age is "that life truly is short and that life needs to be lived in the present. Regretting things not done is almost always worse than regretting mistakes made."

How Our Honorees Earned Their First Dollar From odd jobs as children to first jobs as teenagers, earning that first dollar is one of those lifetime memories that this year’s class enjoyed sharing. Jennifer Kilmer had one of the most unique stories because she earned her first dollar by participating in her parents’ psychology research studies. “For every correct answer I earned a penny. There was no electrical shock involved honest,” said Jennifer. Some of our honorees started really young, Chuck Capps started as a salesman while he was still in elementary school. “Selling my Nintendo games for cold hard cash in the 2nd grade,” Chuck said. Also in elementary, Dr. Dawn Divano learned a valuable lesson while earning her first dollar working on a horse barn. “I would clean out stalls, feed and take care of the owners horses for them. I literally earned one dollar for every stall I cleaned. It was at that time that I realized the harder I worked, the more money I could make,” Dr. Divano said.
Peter Crabtree started his mini-business, before the legal working age, by selling livestock to his teachers and community. Peter said, “The first dollar I earned was from raising and selling pigs when I was in the fourth grade.” One of this year’s winners earned their first dollar while making history at the same time. Greg Jose said, “I started working at the tender age of 10, when I became the Kitsap Sun’s youngest newspaper carrier ever hired. In retrospect, I don’t even understand how I was even allowed to have that job, let alone be selected for it.” In his eyes, Grant Matsuno had the perfect first job. He worked for Sailing Center washing, moving and renting sail boats. Grant says, “I got to spend most of my time outside by the ocean, had a great tan, and got to meet lots of girls. I would have done it for free!” Ryan Rydalch earned his first dollar by simply reselling. “I used to walk the fields that run along a golf course near my home and would find golf balls to sell back to the golfers and pro shop,” said Ryan.
