Dear Friends,

Find Your Place

We’ve organized our season to best suit your unique needs. Not sure where to fit in? Take our quiz at www.danceplace.org. Take 50% off your total ticket purchase when you buy tickets before August 31 with the code PLACE!

I am a ROOKIE. You come to the theater to be entertained, to be wowed, to revel in the joy of human connection! You may not know all those fancy names but you know what you like. For you, we’ve chosen beautiful, stirring works of art that speak to the universal desires in us all.

I am a DANCE JUNKIE. Jetting between performances, installations and showings, you’ve seen it all! A true aficionado, you’re always open to new experiences and want to be delighted, challenged and surprised. Only the best will do for you – edgy premieres, underground artists and works on the cutting edge of the dance scene today.

They boldly take on investigations of eroticism, power and physical perception. Their stories of family heritage show us common threads of connection. And they celebrate the exuberance of life and the people who inspire us. From the big picture to the smallest detail, each artist offers us a unique view of the world.

I am GLOBAL.

The 2016-2017 season is charged with emotion on stage and off as we prepare for our retirement in August 2017. This year we honor the rich history of Dance Place, sustain our most important programs and propel the organization into the future with new works, ideas and the selection of a new Director. Join us to celebrate our successes and dream about Dance Place’s future with three special events: Dance Place Gala on October 1; Celebrate Deborah on April 29; and Celebrate Carla on June 24. 2016-2017 is forty-five weekends of great performances in the Dance Place theater, five months of FREE art events at Art on 8th, our new 8th St Arts Park, daily classes for all ages, OutReach programs in schools and community centers. Open the season with us at Be In Brookland / Experience Edgewood on September 8 - 11, four days of art, fun and connections. Let the Dancing Begin!

Lucky for you, we’ve brought the international stage right to your doorstep! Dive into the rhythms of Africa, the rich lore of Southeast Asia and the vibrant passion of the Americas.

I am PLUGGED IN. Not satisfied with the status quo, you want to jump in and get your voice heard. Dance, for you, is another way to look at the issues facing our world today. You’re inspired by social justice, current events and you never pass up a reason to tweet your mind! We’ve chosen engaging works that will challenge your intellect, inspire your creativity and stay with you long after you leave the theater.

I am the NEXT GENERATION. Are you the student who can’t sit still in class? Do you dance to your own beat? Bring your brothers, sisters, parents and friends to see some captivating moves on our stage. Who knows, maybe you’ll be on our stage soon too! #NextGeneration

Spilling Ink SATURDAY, JANUARY 28 AT 8PM SUNDAY, JANUARY 29 AT 4PM

January Gesel Mason Performance Projects FRIDAY, JANUARY 6 AT 8PM SATURDAY, JANUARY 7 AT 8PM SUNDAY, JANUARY 8 AT 4PM

Based in the classical South Indian Bharatanatyam dance form, Alekhya: Spilling Ink intersects creativity and spirituality. Dancers explore individuality in a choreographic process responding to poetry — an interplay that departs from the traditional interpretation of ancient texts. Artist co-presentation.

antithesis collides the bodies and cultures of postmodern and erotic dance to challenge how female sexuality is perceived, performed and presented. Built upon poet Audre Lorde’s essay Uses of the Erotic, the project mines the erotic as a source of power and creativity. With performers from both the postmodern and erotic dance world – including erotic dancers, pole dancers and burlesque - the work unencumbers the erotic from the pornographic and embraces the tactile, chaotic and passionate edges of female expression. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, The MAP Fund, the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
