ANNUAL REPORT 2020-2021

Head of School Message

Dear SCH Community, Whilst every year is filled with unique moments in time, there is no doubt that the 2020-21 school year was unprecedented in many ways. Yet, at the same time, our extraordinary culture of community, innovation, and focus on learning has never been more in evidence. Looking back, despite the challenges we faced, it is clear we have much to be proud of and grateful for. Many of our school’s accomplishments are celebrated in the pages of this report. What stands out to me is the way we stood together and demonstrated, time and again, what an extraordinary community we are. When we welcomed our students, faculty, and staff back to campus in September, the familiar sounds of laughter, learning, and play felt like a homecoming. Even with masks and new protocols and routines, there was a palpable sense of joy in the air. In this report, you’ll see reflections of that joy. You will see photos of school events made possible through the compassionate donation of time by volunteers. And most importantly, you will be reminded of the dedication of our faculty and staff as they worked diligently to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for our students and families. The purpose of this report is to look back on the year, acknowledge the contributions of so many, and celebrate some of the many milestones that we reached. As you turn the pages before you, you will see the names of our family of donors who have invested in our community and given back in support of our school’s mission. I look forward with excitement as we all continue to work together to make SCH the very best at creating a learning environment where students can challenge themselves as they build a deeper understanding of themselves and the world in which they live, and who will contribute to making that world a better place. Thank you for your integral and valued role in the SCH community. With gratitude,

Steve Druggan Head of School

COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Elevating Athletic Achievement To enhance the development of our scholar athletes, athletic programs and increase alumni involvement, SCH launched the Blue Devils Club in 2018. Since its inception, the Blue Devils Club has hosted sports-related special projects and enrichment programs, installed signage around campus, and aligned with the Positive Coaching Alliance to support our athletes and coaches. The most recent initiative is a fundraising effort to fund a sports video system, HUDL, that will allow viewing and performance analysis tools for teams and athletes at every level on four playing fields and courts on campus. The implementation of this technology will benefit the school community in several ways from capturing recordings of practices and games for coaches to use as a coaching tool, for student-athletes to use the film for their personal use including creating college recruiting videos, and to support live-streaming of athletic and community events, such as such as the All School Opening Assembly, Blue & Gold Day and Blue & Blue Day, for the community-at-large. If you would like to learn more about this project, please contact Kristin Norton at knorton@sch.org. A big thank you to the Blue Devils fans of all-ages!

COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Enhancing Our Spaces In 2011, the Board of Trustees approved a 10-year Campus Master Plan for the school. In that time, we have accomplished tremendous successes: •

Common Ground, which completely transformed our athletic fields and combined our 62-acre campus.

Construction of the 72,000-square-foot award-winning McCausland Lower School and Commons

Renovation of the Middle School (formerly Cherokee Campus)

Restoration of The Exchange, The Henry Library, The Epiphany Chapel, and the entrance to the Wissahickon Inn

Ongoing enhancements include installation of brick pathways that tie our distinct spaces together. This summer, brick and flagstone pathways were installed along Willow Grove Avenue and the interior courtyard of The Wissahickon Inn. Parents and family of the Classes of 2019 and 2021 generously contributed to this project as their Senior Class Gift. Every day, as countless numbers of students, faculty, administrators, and friends navigate our campus, they will acknowledge the spirit of the Classes of 2019 and 2021 as they traverse the beautifully refurbished pathways. The final phase of the Campus Master Plan includes renovations to the Rec and the Commons as well as their surrounding outdoor spaces.

COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Promoting Play After the Lower School for Boys moved to the award-winning McCausland Lower School and Commons in the fall of 2019, the Jordan Building was repurposed to house our Early Childhood Center (ECC), which opened its doors in January 2020 under the direction of Janet Giovinazzo H’01. ECC offers a warm and stimulating private pre-school environment for children 18 months to 4 years old. Aligning with SCH's mission to inspire unbounded curiosity and independent thought, the center follows the Reggio Emilia approach—an internationally recognized and respected method of teaching. The former Chestnut Hill Academy Lower School classrooms were thoughtfully renovated to reflect this philosophy. To extend the Reggio Emilia approach to our outdoor play spaces, the Building and Grounds Committee is committed to integrating a new playground space that incorporates equipment to improve coordination, strength, and critical thinking. “OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE AN AGE-APPROPRIATE PLAY SPACE DESIGNED FOR OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS THAT EVOKES THE SURROUNDING WISSAHICKON AND TIES INTO THE REST OF OUR STUNNING CAMPUS.”
