FROM THE DEAN
Faculty visits from around the world and from practitioners in a variety of settings help bring distinction to a law school. Measured by that criterion, the Indiana University Maurer School of Law had an outstanding year in 2017–2018, as we welcomed nearly 200 guest speakers to Baier Hall. Whether their careers are just beginning or moving toward their conclusion, this year’s guest speakers brought wisdom, energy, thought-provoking discussion, and a vibrant exchange of ideas to the Law School. Many of their remarks were delivered before standing-room-only audiences in the Moot Court Room, and in some cases to overflow crowds in nearby classrooms. Topics ranged from the esoteric (“The Legal Construction of the Ocean — to the essential (“The Good Lawyer”). More than 70 of the speakers came from law firms and other areas of practice, giving our students the opportunity to connect with alumni and friends of the school as they map out their own careers. Regardless of the topic, the talks were informative, timely, and always interesting. As you review this summary, please note that it doesn’t include employers who came to campus for recruiting purposes or the more than 1,000 alumni and friends from outside the judiciary who helped with Moot Court and other advocacy competitions. These omissions are due to lack of space and not to their lesser importance. Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to Christiana Ochoa, associate dean for research and faculty affairs, and to all the faculty members who organized these guest speakers, for their efforts in enriching the cultural life of the Law School.
