The work environment is increasingly oriented toward a horizontal culture, while the workspace is becoming more and more ver tical due to urbanization. In recent years, global IT companies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and Daum Cacao have been building horizontal and open office buildings. In order to secure a sufficiently large space horizontally, a new location was selected away from the center of the city. Unfortunately, as a result, there was a reaction that moved away from the city center where the physical and human infrastructure required for business was concentrated. The goal of this design is to achieve the two conflicting goals of ‘securing a horizontal office space located in the center of the city’ Horizontal space, here, means breaking down the hierarchy between spaces, in other words, between floors in a building. So as to break down the hierarchies between spaces, the boundaries clearly divided through layers must be broken down. Each space with clear boundaries is likely to have a hierarchy, while it is difficult to determine a clear hierarchy between spaces with continuous spaces. In a vertical building, the most prominent boundary in a building is the boundary between floors Therefore, by breaking down the boundaries between the floors, the hierarchy between the floors is weakened, and the space in which this hierarchy is unclear has a more horizontal character.

Throughout many high rise buildings across Gangnam, enlarging the scale is a way to make a difference. The designated site meets limitations in highrise as due to its’ site area, building to land ratio and total floor area. So I tried to distinguish it by manipulating the composition of the space program. vertically connected areas enhance their presence in the facade which distincts from the other nearby buildings.
The designated site,Taehaeran-ro is located in the most highly concentrated office building area in Gangnam, Seoul. The street’s total length of 4km of 10 lanes is faced with 10 floor, more than 40m high buildings. The surrounding buildings has typical vertical cores and slab structures to enhance the vertical hierarchy. I seek for a distinct design through breaking the vertical cores and spreading it into horizontally connected spaces to contrast the building itself from the rest.
Core Spread The diagram shown above is a spread of vertical program cores and slabs in a horizontal formation. As if horizontally continued spaces demonstrate the breakup of the vertical program core.

There is no spatial diversity in schools in South Korea. Most of the schools have faculty space in the first floor, including the principal office and then the stack of similar sized classrooms up to 4-5floors in a form of middle or single corridor. The placement is everything in designing a school. 2 rows of the single corridor placement, long middle corridor style placement, courtyard style or wing type placement are all in school designs in South Korea. Besides the lower budget in the school construction than the prison pretty much explains the current status of South Korea where children spend 12 years of learning and growing in the dismal school space. I propose a new type of school where there are diverse spaces for different activities and environments that can enhance the creativity of the students. The most basic element to start with is to reinterpret the relativity of the classroom and the
hallway. Most of the schools in South Korea have a single corridor of 2.5m width, parallel to repetitive sized classrooms. New module of the school starts by rearranging the current composition, folding the existing setting so that the center of the hallway is surrounded by the classrooms. The central space that is created from folding the current setting is categorized to resting space, exhibition space, voids and spaces for open events. Then to create a large plan by rotating and stacking different categories of the module. At the center of a large plan is for class activity distinct from the regular classrooms, performing different and free events for the students. At the roof of this large floor plan, different shapes of roof windows drag in daylight to implement open thought to the students to think widely and diversely, along with a pleasant studying environment for the growth of the students

With the development of digital technology, diagrams in architecture have come along in various ways, but it can be roughly defined divided into two. In other words, the way to understand diagrams may vary greatly depending on whether the force acting in the creation process of architecture arises from an external field or intrinsic cause. Among these two perspectives, architects such as Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, MDRDV, Ben Van Bjarke Ingels emphasized the extrinsic view, while Peter Eisenman, John Fraser, and Karl Chu emphasized the intrinsic view. I thoroughly believe that diagrams in extrinsic view have a significance as a medium that visualizes material and immaterial elements and converts them into design elements in a modern society where architecture is gradually diversifying. However, there is a limit to the diversity of morphogenesis. We seek to find the relationship between the repetitive diagram architecture and the diagram itself, organize it into a kind of diagram language, and recombine the diagram language to create a more complex shape to improve the limit of shape generation.

diagram language The five diagram languages are combined into one building to respond more complexly to the complex context around the target site. site analysis Regardless of Bjarke Ingels Group's Architectural preference. The influence caused by them is tremendous in the current field of architecture. They are doing multiple projects worldwide based on their simple and intuitive design approach. My study is to analyze the significance of BIG’s design method and derive improvement from their limitations. BIG’s architecture is well known for their “Diagram Architecture’, which has different perspectives in its definition but as in general, the design methodology within using diagrams is commonly known to be the Diagram Architecture. Among the Diagram Architecture, BIG’s diagram visualizes the surrounding contexts to shape their design. This form is categorized as an external perspective within the diagram architecture. BIG’s style of diagram is similar to the 3d modeling of how the final design looks like, so basically the diagram itself is a simplified 3D modeling. This way of expressing architectural design is ver y straightfor ward to achieve reasoning in shaping the building, which seems
site analysis very advantageous and quite popular in design worldwidely. Nonetheless diagram architecture is limited as ways of expressing the 3D diagrams are alike from one another. There are not many unique sites with radical context to be used in diagram architecture, making the diagram itself to look alike to other diagram architecture built designs. The language of the context that land has is very limited causing similar design buildings all over the world. I define the diagram architecture met its limits of generating new shapes of the architecture. I saw the diagram architecture is limited in shaping the building, but if the diagram architecture could be categorized at least in a sense of metaphorical language. The metaphorical language could be defined in different ways as combining at different contexts to create diverse designs. The attempt may result in a typical conclusion but it can be responded in detail of the site’s context to form complex shapes within the surrounding area and the architectural design itself.

WALL New Urabn Regeneration of the Old Jeonnam & Ilshin Textile Industry Factory Site in Gwangju
Small single place for a female worker, the size of one textile machine, with 16 working hours is the only space that one is designated. The textile machine was the only thing that functioned dynamically across the factory contrasting the oppressed female workers, who were restrained by the machine. Now by using its dynamic, the space must be liberated. We do not just erase our painful memories but to rewrite over those painful memories in order to treat and cure our memories. The grid lines of the textile machine on the floor and thread that moves above the grid line reflect the new memories that get overwritten on top of the past memories. For that importance, the module of a basic thread machine is where we start from. the smallest unit of oppression, a basic thread machine, placed in rows just like how the factory used to be. Which creates repetitive grid lines across the factory. Above these lines, just like how thread is placed like a wall. The wall that is made by the thread changes freely along with the rail of the thread reflecting movement of the invisible wall. The traces of the thread machines are no longer oppressing
the scene and now the threads above it, dominate freely and independently the scene from the thread machines. The performed experience of the thread wall is free from the past and changes dynamically adapting to the different use. The space itself freed from the noise of the thread machine is now very sensitive and dynamic according to different uses. The thread performs as the exhibition, stage and resting area providing a different experience to the visitors, far away from the labor oppression from the past. The grid lines of the factory expand to the site of the factory and its relativity to other factory buildings within the site. The main axis parallel to the wide street that crosses the entire site among the factory buildings reflects the connection of the traces of factory1, factory2, production team1, production team2 of the past. This axis that derives in and outside of the factories breaking down the traces of the thread machine modules is the new axis. The new flow that reflects this axis shows how the factory centered site will be renewed with new experiences that will be stacked over the time.

Concept
Detail
Every morning at 5AM, the textile factory of Jeonnam is turned on. As the huge textile machine turns on with a majestic sound, people get to their designated placements to start the morning of the factory. As female workers sit in rows across the space it seems like prisoners with invisible walls in their cells. The situation of female factory workers was very restricted and controlled, even oppressed by the government after the liberation since the textile industr y was leading the economy. Currently, the situation of the female commuters confront similar oppression and restriction by the society. Now, the goal is to tear down the invisible wall that they are currently facing.

PROGRAM - Rectangular Version Relatively Smaller Scale Programs
A small-scale public program is presented in the rectangular version, which presents a narrow and long space extending in a straight line as if weaving machines were arranged in a row to convey the stuffiness of the workers' space at the time.
PROGRAM - Fluid Dynamic Version Relatively Bigger Scale Programs
Unlike in the past, the yarns of the weaving machines use the characteristic of being able to freely expand and contract rather than as a constraining factor to workers, breaking the boundaries of the space and transforming them into elements that can freely frame the space. A variety of small and large spaces are created.

The design project in Gangnam for Koolong’s new office, a korean fashion company. The main goal of this project was to design an iconic building in the most expensive land of Gangnam. I took a design reference from the crystal, luxurious facade and sharpen edges as the shape of the designed building. First floor is composed of a merge of large underground open space and lifted mass shape, which is connected to the huge grass area adjacent to the site for public use.
