01 STUDIO 804 | MONARCH VILLAGE FALL 2020 - SPRING 2021 | 5th YEAR | GROUP | PROF. DAN ROCKHILL Studio 804 is a not-for-profit corporation that is committed to the continued research and development of sustainable, affordable, and inventive building solutions and has gained international recognition over the last 25 years. Among the first of its kind in the United States, the studio functions as a year long graduate-level comprehensive design-build studio. All aspects of the design and construction process are carried out by the graduate student participants led by distinguished professor Dan Rockhill, who runs the studio as a business. As participants, there is nearly nothing that we do not carry out in the project. From initial budget estimates, working with zoning and code officials, corresponding with companies in the indrustry for products, site layout, concrete work, framing, electrical work, custom built furniture, custom built cabinetry, welding frames for solar panels, setting solar panels, landscaping, and much more. The value in this experience is that we do it all within the walls of our 60,000 sq. ft. warehouse and are tasked with figuring out different aspects of the project on our own. This year our class has partnered with the Lawrence Community Shelter to provide them with 12 shipping container tiny homes from recycled conex boxes. These homes will serve families in need of temporary housing during their stay at the shelter. The project will aslo include a covered commons area as well as upgrades to the existing vegetable garden maintained by the residents of the shelter. While a project of this scale and intensity requires that each student have a hand in nearly every aspect, I have served the group mainly in the areas of: Lighting (sole team member), Site Layout (co-team lead), Plumbing (team lead), Website Management (team lead), Framing (major contributor), Mechanical (Major contributor), Electrical (Major contributor). This project has forced me to apply my education in a way that it seems many students never get the chance to and has been the perfect way to synthesize my architectural education. I know that it will have a lasting impact on me as an aspiring architect and designer.

SITE PLAN The site is located to the South of the Lawrence Community Shelter and wraps around the shelter’s existing vegetable garden, for which we have designed a new fence, composting bins, and tool storage all to be built out of cedar. To the north of the garden will be a covered commons area that will connect to the garden and the rest of the site by way of sidewalks. The 12 tiny homes will be organized into 6 duplexes with shared patio between the two homes, covered by a canopy built out of cedar with sheet metal roofing. One of the units has been designed to be ADA compliant. We are striving for LEED Platinum certification, which will be assessed when the project is completed in Spring 2021. 8 69

STANDARD UNIT PAIR Each unit will feature a full, private bathroom and a small kitchenette complete with a microwave, hot plate, and regrigerator. The homes feature custom built furniture (sofa w/ trundle bed, bunk bed) and custom built cabinetry in the kitchen and bathroom, all of which was designed and will be executed by our team. The south facing windows will be shaded by an exterior louver that is positioned between the two container doors, which will be permanently fixed open. Per code, the north (bathroom) window is an egress window, and there is a sprinkler system that runs along the bath and living spaces.
FRAMING, INSULATION, AND FINISHES DETAILING Due to the space restrictions of the container we used 2x2 studs on all existing walls and 2x4 studs on the wall replacing the original doors of the container, which are fixed open by a steel louver with sheet metal bolted to the top. On the outside of the wall studs are three, 3/4” spacers that run the length of the wall and allow for air to run in between the container and insulation. On the inside of the studs are 1/2” furrings strips covering each stud. For the floor and ceiling joists we used 2x4’s and 2 layers of 2” ridgid foam insulation on both the floor and the ceiling. The subfloor materialis 3/4” plywood and the finish floor material is 1/2” black rubber horse stall matts and the ceiling is finished with 1/4” white melamine. The living room walls are 1/4” birch veneer plywood and the bathroom walls are 1/4” white melamine.

FIRST UNIT: PROTOTYPE
STANDARD UNIT PROTOTYPE Before starting all 12 of the units, we built a prototype unit in order to introduce the project to the community during an open house event held at the Studio 804 warehouse. The Lawrence Community invited leaders in the community to come tour the prototype unit and get a proper introduction to the Monarch Village project. Our team is working hard to provide these homes as quickly as possible, so that they can serve the Lawrence Community for a long time to come. The project is on schedule to be completed at the end of Spring 2021.
LIGHITNG DESIGN PROCESS As the sole member of the lighting task group, I was responsible for selecting, acquiring, mounting design detailing, wiring, and installation of all of the lighting in this project. Through that process I have learned about what goes into lighting design and that has given me a peaked interest in learing more about detailing, as well as the act of building in order to flush out problems with details.
02 ARCH 509 | THE KANZA PAVILION SPRING 2019 | 3rd YEAR | GROUP | PROF. KEITH VAN DE RIET The Kanza Pavilion is the first phase of a larger community development project called Prairie Block. The goal of Prairie Block is to restore one city block of native riparian wetland prairie along Burroughs Creek that feeds in the Kaw River as a demonstration of how green infrastructure can help control flooding, erosion, and pollution of the Kaw Valley watershed. The Project will further educate and inspire the public and elected officials about green infrastructure and urban prairies via an eco-art and shade structure installation that includes trails and pedestrian access to the waters edge. Finally Prairie Block will be used by Parks and Rec. for training and maintenance crews on how to successfully manage urban prairie restorations. The upland shade structure was inspired by the local culture and character of East Lawrence, KS. Derived from kanza earth lodges and native teepee structures, we worked through iterations that celebrate these cultures, while maintaining a unique identity for the neighborhood. The materials are entirely donated and recycled: (1) retired power poles are tapered and arranged to maximize solar shading; (2) recycled steel angle from truss towers become struts and mounting shelves; (3) recycled street signs become shingles to clad the shade structure and express a mural of prairie landscape.
DESIGN PROCESS The most noteworthy thing about this design-build project is the $0 budget aspect. This design factor meant that we were limited to using only recycled materials, which were provided to us by a local energy company, Westar Energy. We were able to go to their scrap yard and search for whatever salvageable materials we could find. As a result of this we came upon a unique, yet simple material palette of recycled 3”x3” steel angle, recycled 2x6 dimensioned lumber, recycled telephone poles, and recycled street signs.
N
STRUCTURAL DETAILING The materials we had to work with were 3”x3” angle iron, retired telephone poles, lumber milled from the telephone poles, all 3/4” all thread and 3/4” hex nuts. This made the detailing simple for us, since we could use the angle iron as brackets to support spanning members of angle iron and secure lumber to the outside of the metal . Every connection was made with bolts that we fabricated from the all thread. These are two of the main details that were worked out during the design process.
Stone Carving Work This project included a natural path that would provide access to the creek on site as well as boulders at the end of the path to act as a place to look down the creek, as well as three boulders at the entry point to act as bollards. Each member of the studio worked on their own carving for all of the stones in the project. To learn how to do this our professor had us work with a Master Stone Carver named Karl Ramberg. Two of my peers and I designed a mural across the front of the three rocks at the entry that consisted of Three different Kansas native plant types . The plant that I experimented with representing was the Rattlesnake Master, which is known for its sperichal, bristled flowers and long, stern stem. I chose to represent this in the stone by carving out the spherical bulbs and using a textured chisel to represent the bristles within the bulb.
03 AHMM ARCHITECTS | INTERNSHIP WORK SUMMER 2019 | 4TH YEAR The summer following my third year of school I had the opportunity to intern at the Oklahoma City office of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, a firm based in the UK. I was able to work directly under the guidance of licensed architects on a variety of project types, and was given the responsibility of producing construction documents, signage packages, client presentations, as well as a variety of other documents. The following pages include some of that work that I was tasked with producing.
SQUIRREL PARK | SITE DRAINAGE CALLBACK I worked to resolve a client callback regarding a site drainage issue on a previously completed community of shipping container apartment units located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My job was to identify the floodplane and built objects that were obstructing proper site drainage and to propose a solution that would allow the water to flow out of the site. I proposed building up the existing concrete path that was flooding over to direct the water towards a drain pipe set into the concrete path, then into a bioswale filled with pea gravel and lined with larger landscape boulders.

1212 HUDSON, UPTOWN THEATRE| AWARDS DRAWINGS I was tasked with producing a stripped down set of drawings for the purposes of awards and website postings for a mixed -used urban renewal project located in downtown Oklahoma City. For this I had to learn a drafting program that was new to me called Micrsotation. Something I consider to be a strength of mine is learning to use new softwares quickly.
THE BOWER | SIGNAGE PACKAGE I Put together a signage package for a high end residential townhome and condo development in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City. I was responsible for coming up with a design solutions for signage throughout the entire project , producing multiple design presentations for the client, as well as producing the construction document set and signage schedule to be read alongside it. These are a few renderings that I did for the client as well as several drawings from the CD Set, all of which were produced in Revit.

04 ARCH 608 | 8TH STREET 132 FALL 2019 | 4th YEAR | INDIVIDUAL | PROF. KADIM AL-ASADY This is a mixed income urban housing project located in Kansas City, Kansas, very near the downtown area. The driving factor of my design for the project is a pedestrian corridor and bike path that is integrated into existing city bike paths. This drove me towards the the idea of maintaining a certain rythm as you pass by the large site cast concrete walls that act as the vertical structural supports. A percieved rythm in both the repition of the walls and strict dimension between them and the way that one would feel the openings as they move through. At one end the moments of passing through the wall are at a very human scale and they incrementally change in dimension until that are at a larger than life scale. As one moves through the corridor they are flanked by a few different store fronts including a pharmacy, bar/restauraunt, and leasing office space as well as few large communal seating areas. The goal of this project was to keep things as simple as possible, while still creatng some sort of experiental journey as one moves through the space.

05 ARCH 508 | THE MUSEUM OF SUSTAINABLE URBANISM FALL 2018 | 3rd YEAR | INDIVIDUAL | PROF. KAPILA SILVA The Museum of Sustainable Urbanism seeks to be a great example of developing the urban ecosystem in a thoughtful way. The site selected for the museum is the unused space over a highway in Dallas, TX, to make a statement on sustainable urbanism in mitigating problems of highway designs in terms of maintaining high building density, maximum use of land, and reducing air and noise pollution. The journey through the museum starts on the first floor that acts as an extension of the park across the street. The whole ground floor is devoted to catering to the public and giving people something to participate in through the café and a series of three atrium spaces used as public display cases. As one moves through the museum, they come to gallery floors that revolve around the same atria that now house a set of vertical stacked garden spaces to give the public a strong connection to nature in the vastly urban environment. Moving to the top two floors of the building, the same atria are used as a classroom, a conference room as well as a garden space for the administrative staff to experience nature. The focus of the museum is the atrium spaces that serve several different functions as you move throughout the building. They aim to be mixed-use, dense, and connected to nature in order to drive home the point of developing urban environments in a thoughtful, sustainable manner, thinking about the pedestrian in a deeper way. The whole building is supported by a steel diagrid exoskeleton structure.

06 CREATIVE INTERESTS | PERSONAL WORK FALL 2016 - SPRING 2021 | INDIVIDUAL What caused me to be interested in architecture as a career path was that I have always been intrigued by the different processes of creativity. For most of my early life I have explored creating through visual artwork. The first two pieces are collages inspired by the work of Antoine Predock who used collage work heavily in presenting his architectural design project and as a large part of his design process. The remaing works are unrelated, but are examples of work that I enjoy doing during my spare time. Another creative interest that I have is in producing music. As of late, it has been something that I enjoy teaching myself to do.
