2016-’17 Annual Report
Dear Association Members,
T
hank you for affirming your commitment to the University and the Association through your continued loyalty and generosity. With your support, we reached important milestones during the 2016-’17 fiscal year: l We led the Big 12 in membership growth, adding more than 1,000 new members. The Association is now 43,688 members strong.

events. We will invest the savings into additional scholarships for these Kansans.
Eighty-one percent of spending directly funded programs and services; 14 percent supported membership and fundraising, and 5 percent funded general expenses.
l We established a Business Development Program to help us expand our services for alumni and students. We are grateful for the support of our advertisers and sponsors (see p. 50).
l
l Since we unveiled the mobile app in May 2016, nearly 10,000 Jayhawks downloaded the app and logged nearly 1 million individual sessions. Repeat users spent an average of 19 minutes in the app. If you have not added this feature, please visit kualumni.org/app.
We partnered with KU Endowment to provide four-year gift memberships to all KU students beginning this fall. This change sets the stage for significant enhancements we are making to help students grow their professional networks by connecting them to industry leaders around the world. l
l Our new network strategy guides and develops volunteers and bolsters alumni networks around the world—critical to connecting thousands of Jayhawks to one another and to KU. l We thoroughly evaluated the Kansas Honors Program and modernized the 46-year tradition, creating new Kansas Honor Scholar medallions and streamlining 36 events into 12 regional
Seyfarth
l To support growth in areas that align with our four strategic goals, we added staff positions in business development, digital media and student programs.
Throughout KU’s history, the extraordinary dedication of Jayhawks has helped lift our alma mater to prominence as a world-class research university. We are fortunate to collaborate with University leaders, KU Endowment and Kansas Athletics to help the University continue its climb. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

gifts lift the Association and KU Throughout the past decade, President Club donors have contributed vital funds to help the association expand its programs and services in strategic areas: n The new legacy relations depart-
ment has enhanced our personalized recruitment of students from Jayhawk families. n Expanded digital communications help the Association and KU connect with thousands more Jayhawks around the globe. New features include our mobile app, which offers breaking news and other important information to alumni and students on their digital devices.
n The Association has begun a new
era for our Student Alumni network by providing four-year gift memberships for all degree-seeking students to provide new opportunities for mentoring, internships and career guidance and connections—and help prepare future alumni leaders, volunteers, members and donors for KU.These memberships are funded by Presidents Club gifts and a partnership with KU Endowment.
n Legislative advocacy for higher
education in Kansas has grown through increased collaboration with KU leaders and Regents colleagues and by recruiting new volunteers for Jayhawks for Higher Education—now more than 1,600 members strong. The Association continues to publish the award-winning Kansas Alumni magazine in both print and digital format. KU’s oldest continuous periodical just concluded its 115th year of publication.

Nancy and John Miles
Presidents Club Donors since 2012
W
hen Nancy Miles began her 35-year career as a University staff member in 1981, the lifelong KU fan put her name on the waiting list for season tickets to men’s basketball. She and her husband, John, waited patiently for their turn to buy tickets. They finally got their chance after Coach Larry Brown resigned following the 1988 championship season. “Nobody thought Roy would be any good,” quips John. Coach Williams fared better than expected, and the Miles family faithfully followed the Jayhawks in basketball and football, including games home and away, postseason play, several Final Fours and bowl games. With their children, Steve, ’98, and Michelle, b’02, they attended numerous Alumni Association events and came to know the staff. “The athletic events piqued our interest originally,” John says, “but the Association also does many other kinds of outreach, which we think is important.” After working at the Academic Computing Center for 14 years, Nancy led the automation of student ID cards and directed the KU Card Center. Later she accepted an additional position as assistant to Diane Goddard, g’91, vice provost for administration and finance, to help implement a new financial system and help coordinate the Changing for Excellence initiative to streamline KU operations.

After managing several transitions at KU, Nancy, who retired in December 2016, applauds the Alumni Association’s strategic plan and recent changes in the Kansas Honors Program. “I really admire the the things that Heath Peterson and the staff are trying to do, because it’s easy to get comfortable in what you’re doing and it takes guts to change things,” she says. “It’s important to ask, ‘Are we spending our money wisely?’ I’m also John and Nancy Miles glad that the Association’s campus partnerships and collaboration are more visible.” John applauds the recent expansion of the Student Alumni Network to eliminate membership dues and include all students, an intiative funded through Presidents Club gifts and a partnership with KU Endowment. “It has been great to see the outreach to students,” he says, adding that it’s vital to cultivate future alumni volunteers and donors: “The Association and KU need to have an ‘Act Two’ to follow us aging Baby Boomer donors.” 11

high school band director in Sublette wisely guided Zack Holland away from percussion to the contra alto clarinet—and toward KU. “My band teacher said, ‘if you play this weird instrument, you might get a music scholarship because no one plays it.’ Sure enough, I got KU scholarships in music and engineering.” Holland, e’97, also trusted the advice of his father, who suggested his son study petroleum engineering after growing up in southwest Kansas, where the oil and natural gas industry dominates the economy—and companies offer scholarships to promising students. “We came from too much of a humble background to travel and look at colleges outside the state,” Holland recalls. “My sister went to Baker University, and my brother went to Fort Hays. I looked at K-State, but I had imprinted with KU basketball in 1988, when I was in eighth grade. KU had the scholarships and the fields I was interested in.” As a freshman and sophomore, Holland played the contra alto clarinet with the University Concert Band before deciding to leave Murphy Hall behind and focus on his engineering classes in Learned Hall—and hike up Naismith Drive to complete his humanities and social sciences classes. “I spent more time on Jayhawk Boulevard, and I came away with great friends from my days in Ellsworth Hall and my fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,” he says. “I had a lot of fun and a really good experience at KU. My brother and sister had gone to 12

the smaller schools and my wife graduated from Emporia State, so I’ve always been more involved with my school because the KU brand is so strong.” After beginning his career in Liberal, Holland and his wife, Melissa, ventured to Oklahoma, where he worked for Devon Energy in Tulsa and Oklahoma City and participated in Zack and Melissa Holland local alumni activities and met Danny Lewis, d’05, the Alumni Association’s director of donor relations and athletic programs. As an Association annual member and eventually Life Member, Holland also served on the chemical and petroleum engineering advisory board for the School of Engineering and recruited KU students for his company. In 2013, Holland and a former colleague started their own company, Felix Energy. “He was from Montana and loved the mountains, and Melissa was born in Denver, so we moved out here. Everybody is moving here, so there are plenty of Jayhawks.” Fellow alumni could help convince at least one of his three daughters to follow their dad to the Hill. “My oldest is a senior this year, and we’ve done the KU visit. She wore a Jayhawk to school today, but I think she wants to forge her own path,” he says. “I’m going to have be patient and make a play for my second and third daughters to choose KU.” He hopes his advice, like his father’s and his band teacher’s, will strike a chord.
