Empathy is my design concept.

Hi, I am Kuang. A designer equips with abilities of design research, product design and CAD/CAM integration.

Research is the most essential part of a good design. I believe an outstanding designer must use empathy and understand the user's needs with plenty of research to create well-designed products.

The numbers of elderlies are increasing nowadays. Designers have the responsibility to make people's life better. Especially home-living, elderly people spend almost all days.

Also, I am a woodworker processes 3-years' experience of CAD/ CAM integration. Able to finish a prototype from 3D modeling to CNC processing.

Make home-living life better. HomeWalker Home Furniture Design

Brief HomeWalker is designed to solve home-living problems of elderlies. It’s a design integrates furniture and walking assistive device.

Problems Walking assistive device is the most common assistive device among the elderlies. But some of them refuse to use assistive device because of the critical vision and ego. However, they rely on furniture to enhance body stability such as couch, chair, table, etc. Some even put a chair besides the bed to help themselves getting out of bed. This piece won the Honorable Mention Award in the 2018 ICARE UD Design Competition for elderly and disability assistive devices.

Specification Weight: 7.8 kg Length: 50 cm Width: 54 cm Height: 75-92 cm Radio of tube: 3 cm

Material Beech Rosewood Silicone Sponge Tube Aluminum Tube Rubber

Understand Through collecting information of assisitve devices and interviewing elderlies to understand living habits and obstacles of the elderlies.

Analyse After collecting data from the previous step, analyse data with quantitative software, MAXQDA, to conclude the major elderlies living problems, habits and establish elderly-friendly design principle of furniture.

Design According to the data, create design proposal to solve elderlies’ main living obstacles. Then, build models for size specification of each part.

Prototype Print 1:10 model to check the scale of product through 3D printing. Finish product with CNC machine, carpentry and electric engineering skill.

Post-occupancy Evaluation Invite elderlies to test if the product satisfies user’s needs or not, and the collect feedback to improve Homewalker.

Interview To find the home-living problems of elderlies, 30 households with elder people were visited and interviewed, and data was later analyzed with MAXQDA quantitive software.

"I have problems on holding things, but I don’t want to bother my famalies with this ” -Mr. Cheng, age: 86

"Need a chair to support me when getting out of bed or a furniture when walking” -Mrs. Huang, age: 82

"I have to carry walking stick to anytime and everywhere, because I cannot walk steady. I don’t feel safe without it. -Mrs. Chen, age: 76

Inconvenience of elderlies Many inconvenience are mentioned during the interview. After analysed the data with qualitative research mothed. 3 main problems that elderlies face everyday are concluded in the end.

Instability During interviews, many mentioned body instability while walking and changing positions. To maintain stability by relying on assistive devices or furnitures was crucial.

Inconvenience Problems with carrying or holding things while supporting themselves by walking assistive device or furniture, and not wanting to bother others with this.

Unclear Sight Many mentioned not being able to see clearly when waking up at the middle of the night for toilet and drinking water.

Design Details HomeWalker has two forms — the walking, and the table form. Two are easily interchangeable when needed, to satisfy different activity.

Walking

Transfering

This form helps users walk steadily. The half-table design could carry things while the user is walking.Â

Users can easily transfer bet just by pulling and pushing.

Table

tween walking and table form

Push

Pull

The table can be unfolded for any situations where a flat surface is in need, such as eating, reading, card playing, etc.

Night Mode HomeWalker is also friendly for night times. The light in front can light the way in the dark, to see if there is any obstacle. It could also be use as a nightlight besides the bed, and provide the support while user is leaving the bed.

Post-occupancy Evaluation 23 users were invited to use the device for the post-occupancy evaluation. Most of the users thought the experience was different and better than the traditional aluminum walking device sold in the market.

Exterior Choosing wood as the main material of HomeWalker makes users feel that it is textured and the shape is elegant. Some of them suggest, use composite materials will be interesting.

Function Users felt convenient and useful because of its multifunction. The extendable table could be used for eating, reading, and many other occasions.

Using Most of the users suggested that two wheels is safer and more stable than four wheels. Some of the users mentioned feeling safe because of its heavy weight, and that it’s steadier than the traditional walking device in market.

Mental Most of the users believe that they will not be judged while using Homewalker, and it is different from tradinional walking assistive devices. The extendable table makes it more like a furniture, and has a warmer and roomy touch.

CMF To make HomeWalker more energetic by using composive materials and different color, choosing aluminum as the material and powder coating with different colors as finishing of the upper part of HomeWalker, oak as material of the lower part of HomeWalker.

Heals your heart with funny idea. Homer's Donuts Coasters Set Design

IDEA The design of Homer Simpson’s coasters set is based off Homer’s obsession with donuts. Several items are included in this set — a Homer’s mug, four donut-shaped coasters, and a base shaped as Homer’s face, can be used in the office or at home as a mood booster.

Homer's face base It is designed to look like the moment when Homer is going to bite the donut. His hair is a handle that users can use to take the whole set at the same time. While all the coasters are returned to the base, it will look like Homer is drowned in donuts.

Feel free on the rock beach. Amphibious Outdoor Equipment Design

Brief Amphibious is a pair of shoes for both land and sea activities. It is a combination of wading shoes and diving fins. The shape of Amphibious is based on rock and wave.

Problem Nowadays, people love exploring everywhere, incuding rock beach, to enjoy diving and waterjumping. But having to bring both wading shoes and diving fins is annoying.

Design Details The fin is made by Hydrogel, a material that expands in water, and shrinks out of water. When walking on the rock it is hidden in the shoes. When diving in the ocean, the fin will expand because of the presence of water. When getting out from the ocean, the fin will shrink by itself.

Neoprene A p o p u l a r m a t e r i a l fo r m a k i n g p r o te c t i v e c l o t h i n g fo r a q u a t i c activities. It is flexible, soft and abrasive resistant.

Sheet Rubber 0.3mm sheet rubber could protect user’s toes and heels from the rock.

Non-Woven

Share the memories with friends and families. NicaMemory Postcards Design

Brief Beautiful moments captured during my stay in Nicaragua are made into postcards in this project. Convert Nicaragua’s landscape into iconic object. Each card contains an iconic object that’s meaningful and unique to the local culture. To build a light texture, the packaging consists of bamboo and hemp rope that are bound like the famous local food “Nacatamal”. Send the sceneries and words to family and friends. Or bring the whole set back as decoration on the office desk, best choice for gifts and self-use.

Nacatamal: A traditional Nicaraguan food.

Design Detail Each symbol icon containes meaningful culture, special architechture or magnificent natural scenery. Even the recievers have never been to Nicaragua, they could take vicarious pleasure in seeing these postcards.
