SEASON OUTLOOK

JAYHAWKS LOOK FOR IMP ROV E ME NT IN 2012-13 SW IM M IN G A strong group of upperclassmen and an influx of young talent has this year’s swimming and diving team looking to improve its 5-5 dual meet record and fourthplace finish at Big 12 Championships from a season ago. Led by senior captains Brooke Brull, Alyssa Rudman, Rebecca Swank, the junior and senior classes, make up a majority of this year’s roster. Three sophomores and a talented group of seven freshmen, including two that come in with Olympic trial qualifying times already under their belts, round out the Kansas roster. Head coach Clark Campbell knows that in order for his team to be successful this season, he will need both groups in sync and ready to go right away. “It is a good blend of top heavy with the upperclassman, which is good because of the leadership, but on the underclassmen side, we have a lot of ability,” Campbell said. “We are going to need everyone firing on all cylinders and doing really well and staying competitive, but it is reasonable.” After recently finishing an Olympic quadrennium, this year’s team is more experienced, well rested and looking to improve at the conference meet this year. “We had a little more energy and excitement starting the year, which is good, Campbell said. “The potential for this group from what we learned last year, going into this year, is good. I think everyone is in a really good place.” Big 12 newcomers TCU and West Virginia will make it that much tougher for the Jayhawks to improve on their fourth-place finish from a year ago. However, Campbell’s squad is looking forward to the challenge and believe they can be right in the thick of things come February. “We really feel we can be in that hunt,” Campbell said. “TCU and West Virginia are coming in and they are a lot like us in many ways. It is just going to be really competitive, but it is not something that isn’t attainable, we can do this.”

Six home events highlight the Jayhawk schedule, which includes defending Big 10 champion Minnesota and a five-team championship style meet, hosted by the team in the fall. “We are really excited about this year, because we have more home meets than we are generally used to,” Campbell said. “We have a good mix of teams coming in and we are really excited about going to Topeka for our fall championship meet. It will be the first multi-day meet we have had, in a championship format, since I have been coaching here.” The highlight of the road schedule comes just after the holidays, when the team travels west to Los Angeles for a tri-meet on Jan. 12 with the Mountain West runnerup San Diego State and host UCLA. After spending a few days in California, the team will leave the lower 48 to travel farther west to Honolulu for a week of training. The week will conclude with a dual meet against Hawaii, who placed third in the WAC a season ago. “Hawaii is something that will be a first for our team,” Campbell said. “Getting to spend a few days to do the Hollywood thing in LA and getting to swim really good UCLA and San Diego State teams, helps to break up the trip a little bit.”

FREESTYLE Plenty of returning talent and blend of newcomers, fuels the belief that freestyle will be a strong group for this year’s Jayhawks. On the sprinting side, the team returns Svetlana Golovchun, who had a top-15 finish in the 50 at last year’s Big 12 Championships, and Kaja Kolsek, who will look to have a solid year after transitioning from long-course to short-course racing during her freshman campaign. Senior Madison Wagner, who set her career-best time in the 50 at last year’s Big 12 Championships, will also be counted on heavily to contribute in the shorter-distance events. In the middle distance events, Campbell has confidence in Kansas native, freshman Haley Molden who currently holds all the freestyle records at Washburn Rural, to turn heads in the coming years. “(Haley) has big goals right now,” Campbell said. “She is definitely on that 2016 track, so she is going to come in and make a statement right away.”

“We were definitely hit hard by graduation,” Campbell said. “We are bringing in a young hot shot in Chelsie Miller, so she, along with Brooke Brull in the 200 IM, will be leading the way.” BUTTERFLY The loss of Olympic trial qualifier Stephanie Payne and Kath Liggett, who graduated last spring, will certainly be felt in the butterfly this season. However, the young talent of Sofiia Filatova and Deanna Marks, as well as junior Malia Johnson, who had top-15 finishes in the 100 and 200 at the Big 12 Championships, has optimism about the future of the position rising. “We are probably not as deep as we could be, but we are young,” Campbell said. “They are going to be around awhile and that is their thing, but they are very good, so it is a good group.”

Swank and Morgan Sharp, KU’s record holder in the 500 free, will be relied upon to score in the long distance events. Also in that group is junior Alison Moffit, who finished in the top-eight at the Big 12 Conference Championships a year ago.

“We are well represented in freestyle,” Campbell said. “We have people who can do the short stuff, all the way to the long stuff, so we should be pretty strong.”

“Breaststroke is definitely one of our more solid events,” Campbell said. “We have good talent and good depth, which should definitely be a strong point for us.”

BACKSTROKE Another deep group for the Jayhawks, the backstroke core is led by Brull and Rudman, who scored in the 100 and 200 at the Big 12 Conference Championships last year. Freshman Alina Vats has competed in big meets and is another newcomer the Jayhawks will be looking at to make an impact right away.

Senior Cora Powers, who placed fifth in the 200-yard event at the Big 12 Championships, and freshman Chelsie Miller, who had an Olympic trial cut in the 200, will also be counted on to contribute.

“(Alina) is a very, very good backstroker,” Campbell said. “She has world championship experience and she was really close to making the Ukrainian Olympic team this past year. She is going to make some noise.” Sophomore Caroline Patterson and junior Sara Snow, set new career-best times at the Big 12 Championships last year and will also be counted on to add depth in both the 100 and the 200-yard events, to round out the group for Campbell. IM Led by senior Rebecca Swank, who scored last year at the Big 12 Conference Championships in the 400, the individual medley is the least represented group on the Jayhawk roster, but one of the most talented. Senior Brooke Brull will anchor the 200-yard event, while freshmen Chelsie Miller, who had Olympic trial cuts in both distances, and Bryce Hinde will add depth in their respective distances. THREE-METER DIVE Cash also set a career best in the three-meter event last season, scoring 257.02 on six dives in a dual against Arkansas and finished 28th at the Zone Diving Championships with a score of 241.15. Golden placed 38th at Zones with a score of 189.15. PLATFORM Cash and Golden both set career bests in the platform event at the 2012 Big 12 Championships, scoring 240.00 and 145.95, respectively. Both divers also qualified for the Zone Diving Championships where they placed 18th (214.55) and 28th (128.75). “(Christy’s) strongest event is platform,” Elliott said. “I think she can really crank it up there. She is definitely our strongest competitor as far as knowing how to compete and keep it together when it counts.”

Senior Christy Cash brings experience to KU’s divers.

D IV ING Diving coach Eric Elliott is excited for the start of the season and what his team will be able to accomplish after returning both of his top divers from a season ago. Senior Christy Cash and junior Alyssa Golden both qualified for the Zone Diving championships last season and will be looking to improve on their marks this year. “I think it is going to be really great,” Elliott said. “The level of competition is pretty steep, but having those experiences under their belt going into their junior and senior year is going to have them really ready to go this year.” In addition to his returning talent, Elliott welcomes two newcomers to the roster. Freshmen Meredith Brownell and Madeline Martin will give the Jayhawks depth that they haven’t seen in a few years. “Their eyes are pretty wide open,” Elliott said of his first-year divers. “I am excited to have some young blood in here and have the upperclassmen guide them and really show them how the program works and what is expected of them.” ONE-ME TER DIV E Last season Cash and Golden both set career best scores in the one-meter, scoring 289.04 and 269.02. Both will be looking to improve on their finishes last year at the Zone Diving Championships, where they finished 30th and 35th respectively. Freshman Meredith Brownell will add depth to the Jayhawk rotation. “(Meredith) will be one of our strongest one-meter divers,” Elliott said. “She has the tools, she has the dives, she has the mechanics. I think she is going to do very well, especially as a freshman coming in.”

ROBINSON NATATORIUM

The Jayhawks host events at Robinson Natatorium, which has served as the home for Kansas swimming and diving for over 40 years. The facility has gone through numerous upgrades throughout the years. The current structure features a 25-meter, eight-lane competition pool; a 25-yard, six-lane pool for warmups and a diving well with a one-meter, three-meter and platform boards. Kansas recently overhauled the locker room prior to the 2011-12 season.

Kansas recently overhauled the swimming and diving locker room for the 2011-12 season. The revamped locker room features 32 new sit-in lockers that are 18-inches wide, with under-seat and overhead storage, redone floors with epoxy and a Jayhawk logo in the middle. A sofa and chairs will accompany the lockers to serve as a gathering place for student athletes and coaches before and after meets.

LOCKER ROOM

Another part of the project called for a new restroom, seven individual showers as well as a training area with an ice machine. Two swimsuit dryers and 14-inch vanity mirrors with under counter storage can also be found beyond the locker area. A brand new 40-inch flat screen TV also hangs on the wall in between the lockers and the training area.

ANDERSON STRENGTH CENTER

The $8 million, 42,000-square-foot Anderson Family Strength and Conditioning Center features state-of-the-art weight training equipment, a cardiovascular workout area, meeting rooms and lockers. Los Angeles residents Dana and Sue Anderson pledged the funds to the Kansas University Endowment Association on behalf of their family, including their four children, for the one-of-a-kind strength and conditioning center. Built on existing university property at the northwest corner of Anschutz Sports Pavilion, the two-story center replaced the Shaffer-Holland Strength Center.

C AR EE R AT KANSAS (2002- PRESEN T ) Now in his 11th season at Kansas, head coach Clark Campbell is looking for continued excellence. During Clark Campbell’s 10th season as the head swimming coach at Kansas, the team finished with a 5-5 dual meet record. The Jayhawks were strong at home in 201112, recording a 3-1 record at Robinson Natatorium. The team also placed 13 members on the Academic All-Big 12 team and posted a 3.62 GPA during the spring 2012 semester, earning a spot on the College Swimming Coaches Association’s Scholar All-America Team Award list. During Campbell’s ninth season as head swim coach, KU compiled its second highest dual meet win total since 2008-09, with a 10-5 record and a 2-1 mark in the Big 12. KU was also a strong performer at its home pool, amassing a 5-1 record inside Robinson Natatorium. Under his guidance, senior Iuliia Kuzhil represented KU at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, where she competed in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. Outside of the pool, Campbell’s team compiled a combined 3.21 GPA for the fall 2010 semester, which was the fourth highest of any team in the Kansas athletic program. Twin sister swimmers, Alyssa and Brittany Potter were inducted into Rho Chi, a national academic honor society for pharmacy following the 2010-11 season and senior Joy Bunting was named the 2011 Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics. The Jayhawks finished a successful 2009-10 season with a 9-4 dual record under the leadership of Campbell. KU had two representatives at the NCAA Championships, one Honorable Mention All-American and 13 swimmers and divers named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Team. At the 2010 NCAA Championships, backstroke swimmer Iuliia Kuzhil placed ninth in both the 100-yard (52.02) and 200-yard (1:53.44) backstroke events. Diving standout Meg Proehl also competed, placing 23rd on the one-meter board and 32nd on the three-meter board. For her outstanding performances throughout the season, Proehl was named Big 12 Diver of the Week twice. Campbell led the Jayhawks to an exceptional 2008-09 campaign, securing an 11-3 record. The team shattered nine school records, including all five relay records, during the season. Kansas had 18 swimmers and divers named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Team, with six Jayhawks maintaining perfect 4.00 grade point averages. Three Jayhawks qualified for the 2009 NCAA Championships, including freestyle swimmer Maria Mayrovich, backstroke standout Iuliia Kuzhil and diver Erin Mertz. Campbell coached Mayrovich to a 20th-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle, 21st in the 200 yard freestyle and 19th in the 100 yard freestyle. Mayrovich’s 200 yard freestyle time of 1:46.19 smashed the school record by 0.82 seconds. Kuzhil broke her own school record in the 100 yard

Campbell and the Jayhawks raced to a winning 7-2 dual meet record in the 2007-08 season, capping it off with a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. Seventeen of Campbell’s swimmers and divers were named to the Swimming and Diving Academic All-Big 12 team in February, the most in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks collaboratively shattered four Robinson Natatorium records, adding five Kansas all-time records at the Big 12 Championship meet. The Jayhawks additionally broke 14 records in opponents’ pools, for a grand total of 23 new records for Campbell’s swimmers and divers on the impressive season. Campbell coached junior Danielle Herrmann to her second-consecutive NCAA appearance in the 200 IM, 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events. Herrmann set Kansas all-time records in all three of her NCAA-swum events, while also capturing two of the four Robinson Natatorium records. Mayrovich contributed to Kansas’ home pool records, shattering the last two Robinson Natatorium records in the 100 and 200-yard free events. For her performances, Mayrovich was named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8. In addition to an emphasis on academics and athletics, Campbell and the Jayhawks place an importance on community service. For her community service efforts, diver Meghan Proehl was named to the Big 12 Winter Good Works team. Mertz joined Mayrovich and Proehl as the three Jayhawks to receive Big 12 individual accolades when Mertz was named Big 12 Diver of the Week Feb. 20 for her first-place finishes on the one and three-meter boards against Iowa State the previous week. During Campbell’s fifth season at Kansas (2006-07), Kansas achieved an overall season record of 6-1 in dual meet action and a 2-1 finish in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks paved a path to a third-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships in College Station, Texas, the best conference finish for Kansas since 2004, when Kansas also placed third. Seven broken records completed the 448.50 point finish behind swimming and diving powerhouses Texas A&M and Texas. Under Campbell in 2006, the Jayhawks established 12 Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium records, while cruising to a third-place finish at the Nike Cup-Kenyon Invitational in December. Senior diver Shelby Noonan reeled in Big 12 co-Diver of the Week accolades for her performance in College Park, Md., in November at the Terrapin Cup Invitational where Kansas rallied for a second-place finish. Three Kansas swimmers received invitations to compete in the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 8-10 in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Minnesota Aquatic Center. Kansas’ three swimmers, sophomore Danielle Herrmann, freshman Ashley Robinson and senior Jenny Short, were the most since 1998 when the Jayhawks also sent three competitors. Campbell coached Short to the 200-yard Kansas backstroke record following her record-breaking stint at the Big 12 Championships where she additionally broke the 100yard backstroke record and was a member of the 200 and 400-yard record-breaking medley relay teams.

COACHES/ADMINISTRATION

Continuing the high academic standards set forth by Campbell and the Kansas coaching staff, the Jayhawks placed 16 swimmers and divers on the Academic All-Big 12 team, with 14 on the first team (3.2+ GPA) and two on the second team (3.0-3.19 GPA) during the 2006-07 season. In addition, the Jayhawks attained the highest GPA of all Kansas athletics teams during the spring 2006 semester, accumulating a 3.39 GPA. Campbell completed his fourth year at Kansas with an 8-2 dual meet record and a perfect 3-0 mark in Big 12 competition. Under Campbell, freshman Ashley Leidigh earned Academic All-American status for her accomplishments, both academically and athletically, during the spring semester. Leidigh made her first appearance at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., competing in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly. During the 2004-05 season, the Jayhawk swimmers had 16 entries into KU’s top-five record books. Two swimmers, Amy Gruber and Jenny Short, qualified for the 2005 NCAA Championships. Campbell’s team not only performed well in the pool, but also in the classroom. Jenny Short, Jackie Krueger, Lindsey Urbatchka and Terri Schramka were all honored by the CSCAA as Academic All-Americans for the 2004-05 season. The Jayhawks’ 3.21 team GPA also landed Kansas on the CSCAA Academic All-America team’s list, where KU ranked 40th overall for highest team GPA. During his four year tenure at Evansville, his squads were named Academic AllAmerica by the CSCAA all eight semesters. Prior to his appointment at Evansville, Campbell served as an assistant men’s coach at the University of Minnesota from 1995-98. During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten Conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top-15 finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships. Campbell served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from 1993-95 and directed that school into a top 10 NAIA program in just two years. He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995.

PER SO NAL Campbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began. After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top-10 finishers on the pro circuit. During his career, Campbell was self-coached. He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship. Campbell received a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas in 1993, and a Master’s in physical education/coaching from West Virginia University in 1995. Campbell and his wife, Cassie, have three children, Canaan,Cierra and Claire.

C AR EE R AT KANSAS (200 5 -PR ESEN T ) During the 2011-12 season, Elliott saw two divers represent Kansas at the Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships. Junior Christy Cash, qualified for the second time, finishing 30th (228.50) in the one-meter, 28th in the three-meter (241.15) and 18th on the platform (214.55). Sophomore Alyssa Golden, a first time qualifier, finished 35th (211.65) in the onemeter, 28th (128.75) on the platform and 38th (189.15) in the threemeter event. With Elliott’s assistance, both set career-high marks in all three events during the 2011-12 season. Under Elliott’s guidance, sophomore diver Christy Cash represented KU in the Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships, where she finished 22nd in the platform (182.20), 30th in the 1-meter (225.40) and 33rd on the 3-meter (224.40). With Elliott’s assistance, Cash also had career best performances during the 2010-11 season in three events, (one meter, 272.25), (three meter, 246.90), and (platform, 225.60). Divers Taylor Ilten and Alyssa Golden also recorded career best scores, in the one meter and three meter dives during the 2010-11 season. Throughout the 2009-10 season, Elliot helped diver Meghan Proehl reach the NCAA Championships through her outstanding

performances. Proehl set career-highs on both the one-meter (299.97 points) and three-meter (303.38) boards. She was named Big 12 Diver of the Week for her accomplishments. Both Proehl and diver Allison Ho were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams for their performances in the classroom. During the 2008-09 season, Elliot coached diver Erin Mertz to All-America status at the Zone D Diving meet with her seventh-place finish on the one-meter board. She became the first Jayhawk to earn All-America honors since Kristin Nilsen accomplished the feat in 1998 with her 15th place performance in the 200 yard breaststroke. Mertz was the first KU diver to earn the honor since Michelle Rojohn won the three-meter diving event in 1996. Under the direction of Elliott during the 2007-08 campaign, four Kansas divers competed at the 2008 NCAA Zone D meet at the University of Houston. Mertz, junior Hannah McMacken, sophomore Meghan Proehl and senior Jenny Roberts collaborated to represent the Jayhawks in Texas. Four KU divers were named to the 2007-08 Academic All-Big 12 team, while two Jayhawks received individual Big 12 accolades on the season. Proehl was named to the Big 12 Winter Good Works Team for her excellence in academics, combined with her significant community service efforts with Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. Additionally, for her outstanding freshman campaign, Mertz received Big 12 Diver of the Week honors Feb. 20. The Kansas divers completed an impressive 2006-07 season with three NCAA Zone Diving Championship qualifiers, contributing to Kansas’ 6-1 overall record and 2-1 record in the Big 12 Conference. Then senior Shelby Noonan, junior Jenny Roberts and freshman Meghan Proehl represented Kansas at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships at the Jamail Texas Swim Center March 2-4 on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas. Noonan, Roberts and Proehl all placed in the top-20 in their respective events as Noonan reeled in an eighthplace finish on the one-meter board and a 12th-place finish in the three-meter competition. In early 2006 competition, Noonan, Roberts and Proehl swept first, second and third in the one-meter diving competition in the double-dual meet against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State. That finish followed their domination against the University of Northern Iowa, where the trio qualified for the Zone D Championships at the third meet on the Jayhawks’ schedule. Later in the season,

under the instruction of Elliott, Noonan reeled in Big 12 co-diver of the week accolades for her performance at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. Noonan finished second on both the one-meter board (255.30) and three-meter board (275.85) in the competition. In addition to success on the diving board, the Kansas divers excelled in the classroom. Sophomore Hannah McMacken and Roberts were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, posting a GPA of 3.2 or higher, while Noonan earned second team accolades, posting a GPA between 3.0-3.19. Sixteen swimmers and divers earned Academic All-Big 12 team accolades, with 14 receiving first team nominations and two receiving second team honors. During the 2005-06 season, Elliott had three Jayhawks qualify for the Zone D Diving Championships in Columbia, Mo. Senior Robyn Karlage, Noonan, and senior Casey Topol scored in the top-25 in the one-meter competition. In three-meter competition, Karlage, Noonan, and Topol all placed in the top-30. Under Elliott, Noonan led the 2005-06 team with first-place finishes against Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa State and Drury. She also earned a fourth-place finish at the Minnesota Invitational, where the swimming and diving team placed third. C AR EE R BE F ORE KAN SAS Elliott joined the Jayhawks for the 2004-05 season after one year as the head diving coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to coaching at Louisiana-Monroe, he was a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Georgia diving team. He started an age-group program with Dan Laak in 1995 in Athens, Ga. In eight years with the program, he coached divers that reached the Junior National finals and represented the Junior U.S. Diving team in international competitions.

A native of Alexandria, Va., Elliott was an accomplished diver himself. He earned high school All-American diving honors at Mount Vernon High School and NCAA Division II All-American honors at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Chester with a secondary education degree with an emphasis in history in 1992. P ERS O NAL Elliott is married to Kirsteen Bennington and they have a son, Liam, and daughter, Doran.

Elliott began his coaching career at Upper Marion High School in Pennsylvania before serving as the head diving coach at Old Dominion University from 1993-94 and Virginia Tech from 1994-95.

C AR EE R AT KANSAS (2003 - PRESEN T ) While assisting Campbell and Elliott, Fox helped the Jayhawks to a 5-5 dual meet record in 2011-12. Outside of the pool, the team placed 13 members on the Academic All-Big 12 team and posted a 3.62 GPA during the spring 2012 semester, earning a spot on the College Swimming Coaches Association’s Scholar All-America Team Award list. Fox’s leadership helped KU compile a 10-5 record in dual competition during the 2010-11 season and a 2-1 mark in the Big 12. Under her guidance, senior swimmer Iuliia Kuzhil represented KU at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, where she competed in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. Collaboratively with Campbell and Elliott, Fox assisted in leading Kansas to a 9-4 dual record during the 2009-10 season. KU had two representatives at the NCAA Championships, one All-America Honorable Mention and 13 swimmers and divers named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Team. Fox helped lead the Jayhawks to a successful 2008-09 campaign, securing an 11-3 record. The team shattered nine school records, including all five relay records during the season. Kansas had 18 swimmers and divers named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Team, with six Jayhawks maintaining perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator 10th Season Mansfield, Ohio

During the 2007-08 season, Fox assisted in leading the Jayhawks to a winning 7-2 dual meet record, capping the season off with a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. Under Campbell, Fox and Elliott, 17 swimmers and divers were named to the Swimming and Diving Academic All-Big 12 team, the most in the conference. The Jayhawks collaboratively shattered four Robinson Natatorium records, five Kansas all-time records and 14 records in opponents’ pools, for a grand total of 23 broken records for the Kansas swimmers and divers in the impressive 2007-08 season. Fox assisted in guiding the 2006-07 Jayhawks to one of their most successful seasons yet, including a third-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships, which marked the second time in four seasons that Kansas accomplished the feat. That team broke eight Kansas records on the season, seven at the 2007 Big 12 Championship meet and one at the NCAA Championship meet. In addition, 12 Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium records were established by Kansas swimmers in Gambier, Ohio, at the Nike Cup-Kenyon Invitational in December 2006. Fox returned to KU in 2003 to take the position of assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator under Campbell. She was a student assistant under former KU head coach Cathy Burgess during the 2000-01 season. She graduated from KU in 2001 with a general studies degree in communications. After graduation, the Mansfield, Ohio, native, joined the full-time staff of Athletes in Action. Athletes in Action is a Christian-based sports group that helps student-athletes throughout the country. AIA sent her to the University of Virginia where she became a volunteer assistant under head coach Mark Bernardino and worked with the men’s and women’s swimming teams. Both teams finished in the top 10 in the NCAA.

C A RE E E R AT KANSAS (2011- PRES ENT ) Former Jayhawk breaststroke and butterfly specialist Joy Bunting enters her second season as a volunteer assistant coach for coach Clark Campbell and the 2012-13 Kansas swimming and diving team. Bunting completed her four year swimming career at the Big 12 Championships in February 2011, where she tallied 43 total points for the Jayhawks, including a career best time of 2:02.58 in the 200 Butterfly. She made an immediate impact on the program during her freshman season as she earned Newcomer of the Year honors and the Karen Dionne Award for Most Inspirational Swimmer. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team on numerous occasions and was honored by KU following her season with the 2011 Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics as part of The University of Kansas Women’s Recognition Program.

“Joy will be an awesome addition to our staff,” said head coach Clark Campbell. “Her presence as a leader and coach will help our athletes get better because Joy has the ability to develop our team in and out of the water.” “Joy brings a lot of enthusiasm, heart and energy to this program,” assistant coach Jen Fox said. “I can’t wait to start working with her on deck.” Bunting was a four-year letter winner in swimming and holds school records in the 100 fly, 100 breast and 200 IM, as well as the 200 medley relay, 200 and 400 freestyle relays. She was named 2004 Rookie of the Year and received all-conference honors 2004-07 as well as All-American honors in the 200 IM and 200 breast in 2006 and 2007. Bunting graduated in May 2012, with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

Debbie Van Saun joined the Kansas Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator in August 2007. In July 2011, Van Saun was named Senior Associate Athletics Director. At Kansas, Van Saun directly supervises selected sports and provides administrative guidance to those coaches and their programs. Those selected sports include women’s basketball, rowing, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, and swimming and diving. In addition, Van Saun oversees Student-Athlete Development, Sports Medicine, Travel, Risk Management, and works closely with student-athletes regarding financial aid, housing, summer school, fifth-year aid and other pertinent areas. It is Van Saun’s responsibility to monitor Kansas Athletics’ efforts to comply with Title IX and NCAA gender equity principles, as well as monitor NCAA governance issues and contribute to the University’s position on new NCAA legislation. Van Saun came to KU from the City of Lawrence, where she served in numerous positions: as assistant city manager, assistant utilities director, assistant finance director and collections supervisor. Her roles with the City date back to 1979 and concluded when she came to KU in 2007. Van Saun earned two degrees from KU, a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in Public Administration.

Director of Operations TE GAN THORNBERRY Second Season

Tegan Thornberry started at Kansas Athletics in August, 2003 and served as the travel manager until September, 2011. In September, 2011 Thornberry’s position changed to Director of Team Operations for Swimming/Diving & Track/Cross Country. She is responsible for Director of Operations duties for both sports, including a liaison role with Student Athlete Services (financial aid, textbooks, housing, etc.), coordinating team travel, and working with the head coaches on submitting weekly practice logs to Compliance through JumpForward software. In her new role, Thornberry will continue her current travel-related duties with Olympic Sports and, as time allows in her primary role with both sports, continue to work on post-season travel arrangements.

Thornberry earned her bachelor’s degree in sports and fitness management and her master’s in sport studies at KU. She was born in Seoul, South Korea and attended Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kan. While in high school she played softball and golf. Thornberry is a member of the Society of Collegiate Travel Management. Her main hobby is golf.

Thornberry was a member of the Kansas golf team and also worked as a men’s basketball manager while in school. She also spent time as a baseball operations intern for the Kansas City Royals.

Athletics Director Second Year

the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 200910 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements has also been secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high grade-point averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a bestever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of top-five finishers in league history. Zenger secured a five-year apparel contract for Redbird Athletics, and significantly increased the marketing of the program in the Central Illinois region, most notably with a campaign centered on the award-winning marketing campaign “Spread the Red.” He also witnessed record-setting attendance figures in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, while seeing 17 Redbird teams advance to postseason play. At the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting

In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

A highly-regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette GrayLittle began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on Aug. 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Chancellor Gray-Little’s goals for KU include enhancing student achievement so that more KU students graduate in four years, as well as spurring more research and scholarly activities that enhance quality of life and create economic growth. During her service as chancellor she also has made it a point to meet with Kansans and with KU alumni throughout the state and nation to learn about their aspirations for the university. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, she rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College

of Arts and Sciences. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Saint Louis University. She earned a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Denmark. She also served as a Social Science Research Council Fellow and received a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council.

The $200,000 renovation included 32 lockers, seven individual showers, a new training area complete with an ice machine, two new swimsuit dryers and a 40-inch flat screen TV. “We are absolutely thrilled to have the new locker room and it is a big upgrade for us,” said head coach Clark Campbell at the time. “We really appreciate all the donors and supporters of the program, who without their help could not have completed this project.” With its new facilities in place, the team started the season on the road, traveling to Tucson, Ariz., to take on the University of Arizona on Oct. 8 in a dual meet. Payne was the lone winner for the Jayhawks, with a 2:08.23 time in the 200-yard IM, as they fell to the Wildcats, 170-80. Two weeks later, the Jayhawks faced another tough road test, traveling to Minnesota on Oct. 21 for a dual with Golden Gophers who finished the season ranked 15th. the site of their first double dual meet of the season on Oct. 22, as they defeated host Northern Iowa (186-105) and North Dakota (176-117) en route to evening their season record at 2-2. Junior transfer Svetlana Golovchun captured her first event victory in collegiate competition, as she finished with a 59.52 time in the 100-yard backstroke. After a stretch of meets on the road to open up the season, the team returned to Robinson Natatorium to host a dual with Illinois on Oct. 29. Junior Vanessa Hanbury and sophomore Alison Lusk captured two events apiece, as KU swam past the Illini 174.5-118.5 and brought its dual meet record to 3-2 for the season. The Jayhawks had more than two weeks to rest before welcoming Big 12 Border Showdown rival Missouri Nov. 11 into Robinson Natatorium. KU hung with the No. 15 Tigers for the majority of the meet. Three straight first-place finishes by junior Rebecca Swank (1,000-yard freestyle), senior Shannon Garlie (200-yard freestyle), and freshman Deanna Marks (100-yard backstroke) in the meet’s first four events gave the Crimson and Blue a solid start, but the Tigers proved to be too much, reeling off a 185-102 victory.

A week later, KU would break the .500 barrier yet again, with one of their most successful meets all season against the Mavericks from Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 19. The Jayhawks swam past UNO by a 150-78 score, but it was the divers who made the biggest splash inside Robinson. Junior diver Christy Cash would secure her secondstraight spot at the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships with her first-place finish in both the one and three meter events. Sophomore Alyssa Golden would make sure she gave her teammate company at Zones, qualifying for the first time in her career.

“It is really nice to get that qualifying score done this early,” said diving coach Eric Elliott following the dual accomplishment. “Now we can work on some dives that we are really going to need once we get to the Championships.” KU would make its first of two trips to the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia during the season, this time for the Mizzou Invite, which took place during a threeday stretch in December. Out of eight schools, Kansas would finish in third place behind host Missouri and Boise State. The Jayhawks earned 604 points, which was 119 points ahead of fourth place finisher North Texas, to close out the fall season. The highlight of the invitational came on the first day, as sophomore Morgan Sharp set a new school record in the 500-yard freestyle with her time of 4:48.01, which surpassed the old KU mark of 4:48.77, set by Gina Gnatzig in 2006. “It doesn’t happen too often to have a record fall this early in the season, but Morgan just did an awesome job,” Campbell said following his swimmer’s record-breaking performance. “We have been working with her and tweaked her stroke a bit and she has taken to it really well.” After a light December slate, Kansas boarded a plane and traveled to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico for its annual training trip. The Jayhawks arrived on Jan. 3 for their eight-day stay in the Spanish-speaking territory. Night swimming, land and water workouts all led up to the Mayaguez Invite, which took place on Jan. 7. The event pitted KU against first time opponents LaSalle and St. Michael’s and took place in a long course format. The Jayhawks finished first during competition with a total of 238 points, (103 in front of second place LaSalle). Kansas would perform well in the warm waters under the Puerto Rican sun, claiming first place honors in all but one event. A mere four days after returning to the continental U.S., the Jayhawks jumped back into their home waters for a Senior Day match-up with former Big 12 foe Nebraska

on Jan. 14. Seniors Shannon Garlie, Sarah Hettenbach, Kath Liggett and Stephanie Payne were all honored in a pre-meet ceremony as KU looked to finish their home season strong. The ‘Hawks would do just that handing Nebraska a 155-145 defeat. The Kansas juniors would steal some of their senior counterparts’ thunder as Rebecca Swank and Brooke Brull won a total of three events, giving KU a 3-1 home record on the season. The senior day victory also pushed Kansas’ record to 5-3 on the year, which marked the 11th-straight season a KU team has reached the five win plateau. Kansas would close out the busy month of January in Fayetteville, Ark., with a loss to the Razorbacks on Jan. 21, 199-96. The Razorbacks would take the meet’s first seven events heading into the diving break, while KU finished first in a total of only two down the stretch. Senior Stephanie Payne was the first in the 400-yard IM (4:29.21) and the Jayhawks were the fastest in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:38.18. The loss dropped Kansas to 5-4 on the season, heading into its final regular season dual meet. The team’s final regular season test came in Ames, Iowa, against Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Feb. 2-3. The Cyclones would get the best of the Jayhawks on the first day of the two-day dual meet, leading by a score of 82-68. The next day, KU would push ISU to the brink, keeping the meet close with just two events left to go, but Iowa State would muster only its third victory over KU in program history by the slimmest of margins, taking the final relay event and in return, the meet, 158-142. Payne kept the ‘Hawks in it up until the final solo event, thanks to her firstplace finish and 3:16.69 time in the 300-yard IM. The loss gave Kansas a final regular season record of 5-5 and made the Jayhawks 0-2 in a pair of Big 12 match-ups during the season.

With the regular season over, KU shifted its attention to the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 22-25 in Columbia, Mo. During the four day competition, Kansas would amass a total of 423 points, which was good for fourth place. A total of 20 KU swimmers would earn top times in 36 different events, while two Jayhawk divers achieved lifetime best performances on the platform. It was KU’s highest point total at the Big 12’s in four years and capped off the swimming portion of the 2011-12 schedule. The Kansas divers closed out their season with a successful trip to the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Championships (3/9-11) in Iowa City, Iowa. Junior Christy Cash made her second straight appearance in the event and finished 30th (228.50) in the one-meter, 28th (241.15) in three-meter competition and 18th (3/8-10) in the platform. In her first career appearance at Zones, sophomore Alyssa Golden placed 35th (211.65) in the one-meter, 38th (189.15) off of the three-meter boards and 28th (128.75) in the platform. The Jayhawk swimmers and divers earned a number of academic accolades during the month as 13 of them wound up on the Academic All-Big 12 Team following their performances during the fall 2011 semester. Nine student-athletes would find a spot on the first team (3.20-4.00 GPA), while four placed on the conference’s second team (3.00-3.19 GPA).

As a team, KU earned a spot on the Scholar All-America Team list, which is compiled by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The Jayhawks studied their way to a 3.02 GPA during the fall 2011 semester, which added them to six current or future member schools of the Big 12 Conference on that list. Senior Sarah Hettenbach would garner one of the Big 12’s highest academic honors, as she was one of three Jayhawks named a winner of the Dr. Gerald Lage Award.
