No doubt each one of us can recall what it was like to be underclassmen, when we put on the uniform for the first time and wore KANSAS across our chest. Along with that pride came the overwhelming responsibility to perform well and to represent the University of Kansas with honor. As upperclassmen, it was our role to lead our teams and to instill Kansas values in the next generation of Jayhawks. So it continues with K Club. It has been my great honor to serve as president of the K Club Board of Directors for the past two years, during a significant period of transformation, not unlike the transformation we endured as KU studentathletes. As alumni, it is now our turn to lead by example by staying connected, supporting current student-athletes and preserving the history and tradition of Kansas Athletics. Entering our 135th year, K Club is more active than ever before. We’ve emerged as a leader among peer letter winner associations, and we are engaging generations of Jayhawks in new and meaningful ways. Sure we face challenges, yet I’ve witnessed the type of loyalty and “team” commitment among K Club members that rivals the dedication of our younger selves. My KU experience started as a student-athlete back in the late 1950’s, and has continued through the years as a KU coach, faculty member, administrator, and mentor. I am privileged to have crossed paths with hundreds of former Jayhawk student-athletes, all with the same reflection and respect for our deep heritage.

The board strives to represent all varsity sports that have ever been sponsored by Kansas Athletics and consists of no more than 25 members at one time. The group meets quarterly to discuss topics such as Hall of Fame inductions and criteria, membership, K Club functions, and ways to support the current student-athletes. About K Club K Club’s mission is to help PRESERVE the history and traditions of Kansas Athletics, SUPPORT current student-athletes, and CONNECT former participants, coaches, trainers and managers of varsity sports at the University of Kansas.
Once a Jayhawk, Always a Jayhawk. K Club began when the first baseball letter was awarded in 1877. The faces of varsity athletics at the University of Kansas have changed through the years, but the “K” each of them wore proudly on their chest binds them forever. There are currently over 7,000 former KU coaches, athletes, managers and trainers worldwide from 24 sports. ...the history and traditions of Kansas Athletics
Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame The Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame was established to formally recognize outstanding individual and team achievements and to preserve the heritage and tradition of the University’s intercollegiate athletics program. The Hall of Fame display is located in the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, on the east side of historic Allen Fieldhouse. K Club is the official keeper of the Hall of Fame. All recommendations are reviewed by the K Club Board of Directors and then submitted to the Director of Athletics for final approval. Inductions for the Hall of Fame take place during K Club weekend each fall. In 2011, Don Czyz, first-team All-American baseball player, and Amy Linnen, national champion pole vaulter, were awarded the honor. The 2012 inductees are soccer standout Holly Gault, track and field national champion Egor Agafonov, and the 2006-07 men’s basketball team. The criteria for nominating an athlete and a nomination form can be found at kuathletics.com/hallofathletics.

About the 2011 Inductees: Don Czyz (Baseball 2003-06): From Overland Park, Kan., Czyz played at KU from 2003-06. He was named a First Team All-American by Louisville Slugger, Pro-Line and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association. He was also selected as the 2006 NCBWA Stopper of the Year, becoming the first Jayhawk to receive this national accolade. He was a two-time All-Big 12 selection and earned the conference’s Pitcher of the Week distinction twice in his career. Czyz was selected by the Florida Marlins in the seventh round of the 2006 MLB draft and pitched in their organization for three seasons.
Amy Linnen (Track and Field 2005): Linnen, a native of Westhampton Beach, N.Y., won the NCAA indoor pole vault title in 2005 and earned All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons that year. Linnen put together one of the best single seasons in Kansas track and field history. She currently holds the school indoor and outdoor records in the event with a height of 4.30 meters (14 ft., 01.25 in.). Linnen was named the Female Jayhawk of the Year for her accomplishments both on and off the track in 2005.

Jersey Retirement Having one’s jersey retired at the University of Kansas is one of the greatest honors to be bestowed on an athlete. With Kansas Athletics’ rich history some would say it is among one of the great accomplishments nationally. On October 2, 2011, three more Jayhawks were honored in this way and will forever be a standard of excellence for future Jayhawks. Congratulations to soccer greats Caroline Smith, Holly Gault and Meghan Miller.
Caroline Smith:
From 2002-05, forward Caroline Smith led the KU offense each season in scoring and continues to sit atop the KU record books with 126 points, 51 goals and 333 shots for her career. In 2004, Smith was an NSCAA All-America selection for the second-straight year. She was also named a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz in 2002. Smith was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams while donning the Crimson and Blue, scoring five goals in postseason play.
Holly Gault:
Holly Gault was a defender for the Jayhawks from 2003-06, earning two All-America distinctions in that time including NSCAA First Team honors in 2004 when KU was crowned Big 12 Champion. With Gault in the backfield, the Jayhawks set a program record allowing just 13 goals in 2004. Despite playing on defense, Gault managed the program’s fourth-most career assists with 19. Over her four-year campaign, she also logged the third-most starts in a KU career with 82.
Meghan Miller:
A goalkeeper at KU from 2001-04, Meghan Miller was named Soccer Buzz First Team All-America and NSCAA Second Team All-America in 2004 after guiding the Jayhawks to their first Big 12 Championship title. Miller was also part of a group that gave up just 13 goals all season, a KU single-season record. During her tenure, Kansas made three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the Sweet 16 in 2003. Miller still ranks first in Kansas soccer history with a 0.98 career goals against average, 60 wins, 28 shutouts and 88 appearances at goalie.

Booth Family Hall of Athletics The Booth Family Hall of Athletics is an all-sport museum adjacent to the east side of Allen Fieldhouse. This facility opened in January of 2006 and was expanded in 2009. Open year-round, it enables Jayhawk fans to experience the history and traditions of Kansas Athletics. The Hall honors KU’s historic varsity-sport programs, coaches and student-athletes, past and present. During the construction process, many of these individuals were interviewed to help tell the story of Kansas Athletics and were a driving force for the building’s completion.

K Club Lifetime Service Award The 2012 Recipients

Former KU coaches Bob Timmons and Floyd Temple were the recipients of the 2012 K Club Lifetime Service Award. Timmons coached the men’s track and cross country team from 1966-88. He coached an astounding 13 world record holders and led the Jayhawks to four NCAA titles. Temple came to KU as a football player in 1949 but went on to make his mark on the baseball diamond as a player and coach. During his 28-year stint as head coach, he compiled 438 victories and is the winningest coach in Kansas baseball history.
What is the K Club Lifetime Service Award?
The K Club Lifetime Service Award has been established to formally recognize an individual who has shown continued service to Kansas Athletics and its studentathletes. The recipient of this award upholds and advances the mission of K Club. The award is presented at the Senior Celebration in the spring. This award is not required on an annual basis and may be awarded posthumously.

Reflecting on the meaning of the K Ring as it is read by K Club Board President David Johnston.
K Club is honored to purchase the K Rings for the senior class annually. On April 29, Kansas Athletics and a former athlete from each sport presented the coveted K Ring to the class of 2012 in an elegant ceremony held in Allen Fieldhouse. The program featured appearances by a host of former Jayhawk greats who helped congratulate the seniors on their outstanding Kansas careers. “The night is about honoring our past and enhancing the tradition that goes along with being a part of the Kansas Athletics family,” said Director of Athletics Sheahon Zenger following the ceremony. “It’s the perfect way for us to commemorate their graduation and the beginning of their professional lives. It was a great night.” The highlight of the night came when K Club President and former KU student-athlete David Johnston presented the Jayhawks with their K Rings. Johnston discussed the importance of the rings and how each ring is a symbol of the athletes’ past, present, and future. “The ceremony is a way of presenting them with a symbol of the things they’ve experienced here at KU,” Johnston said. “The K Ring is something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives and hopefully it will be something that allows them to remember the experience they shared as Jayhawks.”

Career Development Kansas Athletics is dedicated to providing exceptional career coaching to all current student-athletes. Our staff is committed to educating and preparing our student-athletes for life after competition by providing resources and networking opportunities that ultimately lead to jobs and internships. We accomplish these goals by offering career education through whole group seminars, small group career meetings and in the classroom through a section of PRE 210, Career and Life Planning. Kansas Athletics works closely with the University Career Center which complements the services Athletics provides by offering resume review, one-on-one career guidance, and a variety of workshops designed to develop job search skills. KU studentathletes are encouraged to utilize these resources and participate in the University Career Fairs, which are offered throughout the academic year.

The Student-Athlete Support Services team can assist studentathletes in registering on KU Career Connections. This network allows students to upload their resumes and apply for internships and jobs posted specifically for KU students.
Kansas Athletics is pleased to announce our partnership with Career Athletes. Career Athletes is an online resource that allows current and former student-athletes to research and apply for employment opportunities with companies that are looking to hire student-athletes. Additionally, Career Athletes provides career resources and virtual career coaching specifically catered to student-athletes and the transferable skills they possess.

Jayhawks as Leaders Leadership Retreats In October, 27 current student-athletes from baseball, softball, rowing, and track and field attended an overnight Jayhawk Leadership Retreat. The athletes, selected by their coaches, participated in games and activities, as well as discussions to help bring out the leader within themselves. Representing K Club, Candace Dunback (track and field), David Johnston (track and field) and Ally Stanton (softball) joined the retreat as facilitators to help further strengthen the bond between current student-athletes and those who paved the way before them.

Jayhawks After Competition Kansas Athletics and K Club are currently creating programming for Jayhawks After Competition, a group of student-athletes who have recently exhausted their eligibility and are preparing to transition into life after competition. The group will meet periodically throughout the year to take part in discussions covering topics such as financial planning, identity issues, stress management and maintaining nutrition. JAC is seeking any former student-athletes who are willing to become a mentor (career or personal) for our student-athletes as they take the next steps in their life’s journey. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee September 13: Soles4Souls Soles4Souls collects new shoes to give relief to the victims of abject suffering and collects used shoes to support micro-business efforts to eradicate poverty. The KU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) collected more than 1,500 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls over a four-week period culminating in 75 KU student-athletes sorting the shoes, binding them together and then packing them before being delivered to those in need.

Former Kansas basketball standout Scot Pollard hosted the seventh-annual JayRock produced by the Kansas Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on Jan. 24. Donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital were taken at the door. Each team competed to raise funds for the charity and the Kansas rowing team took the top spot as the team that raised the most.
April 2: The Big Event Scot Pollard hosts JayRock
More than 50 current and former student-athletes, coaches and administrators spent their Saturday building and painting a local house for Lawrence Habitat for Humanity. The student-athletes joined over 2,000 volunteers from the University of Kansas to paint buildings, rake, cut hedges and clean up yards around town in an initiative called ‘The Big Event.’

First-Game Tailgate
At the beginning of each football season, K Club hosts a first-game tailgate for all K Club members. The 2011 first-game tailgate tripled in size from the previous year. Join us on the Hill as we kick off another great season of Kansas Athletics. The 2012 event will take place on September 1 as the Jayhawks take on South Dakota State. More information will be sent later in the summer.

With each event I attend, I continue to meet more former student-athletes and I see the pride we all have, regardless of our sport. We have a common bond....that it doesn’t get any better than being a Jayhawk!!

K Club Weekend K Club Weekend is the major annual gathering of former student-athletes, managers, trainers, and coaches. The celebration is traditionally hosted on Homecoming Weekend and the events are multi-faceted. Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame inductions and lunch take place in the Booth Family Hall of Athletics on that Friday. Immediately following inductions, the Traditions Golf Tournament kicks off at Alvamar Country Club. The Friday evening social was held at The Oread Hotel in 2011 and will be held at Abe and Jake’s Landing in 2012. Twenty-five and 50-year letter pins are presented on Friday as well. The main event on Saturday of K Club Weekend is the tailgate on Campanile Hill two hours prior to kickoff. Game time is not usually known until two weeks prior to the game. During the game our Hall of Fame inductees and special reunions are generally recognized on the field. Game tickets are available to members free of charge and guest tickets are available at a discounted rate. The 2012 K Club Weekend will take place Oct. 26-27. More information will be sent late in the summer. Join us for a weekend filled with unrivaled camaraderie as we celebrate the legacy of Kansas Athletics.

Spring Game K Club annually hosts a tailgate on Campanile Hill prior to the spring football game in April. This year, K Club partnered with the Williams Education Fund to entertain over 1,300 guests. The same day, Kansas Athletics and the City of Lawrence held a ceremony for the renaming of stretches of two streets after former KU football coach, player and first-ever recipient of K Club’s Lifetime Service Award in 2011, Don Fambrough. The ceremony, which featured KU officials, Lawrence City Commissioner Hugh Carter,and Fambrough’s son, Preston, took place at what was formerly the intersection of 11th and Maine Streets.

Staying Connected Through K Club “Playing football for the University of Kansas was a dream come true. I could have never imagined that football would bring me so many opportunities. Not only did it give me an education at a world-class institution but it also brought me in contact with so many wonderful people.
