Introduction to Kansas
Horejsi Family Athletics center
The Horejsi Family Athletics Center has served as the home of Kansas volleyball since its opening on September 1, 1999. Routinely in the AVCA’s top-50 in attendance, the crowd at Horejsi Family Athletics Center creates a true home court advantage. The $3.8 million project was completed shortly after the conclusion of the 1998 volleyball season. In addition to serving as the practice and competition home of the KU volleyball team, the Horejsi Center also acts as a practice facility for the Jayhawk men’s and women’s basketball teams. Located between the Wagnon Student Athlete Center and Hoglund Ballpark, the 16,500 square foot facility seats 1,300 fans for Kansas volleyball matches. Besides housing practice and competition courts for both volleyball and basketball, the Horejsi Center boasts the new KU volleyball lockerroom, concession stands and a ticket booth. On September 1, 1999, KU defeated UMKC, 3-1, in the first match inside Horejsi Family Athletics Center. How-

ever, the official dedication ceremony was held prior to the Kansas-Auburn match on September 11, 1999, during the Jayhawk Classic Tournament. Last season, the Jayhawks added another first to its home floor advantage when they took down No. 10 Iowa State, 3-1, for the program’s first victory over a top-10 opponent. “The Horejsi Family Athletics Center not only gives us top-notch practice courts, but it provides us with a court that makes home matches at KU an exciting event to be a part of,” said KU head coach Ray Bechard.

Introduction to Kansas
Jayhawk Traditions Rock Chalk Chant
The Rock Chalk Chant The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. Bailey wanted a cheer for his Science Club. Returning from a convention in Wichita, Bailey and some associates patterned a yell after the rhythmic cadence of their train rolling along the tracks. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of “Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU” being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that “Rock Chalk” be substituted for “Rah, Rah” because it rhymed with Jayhawk.
Wave the Wheat 12 2011 Kansas Volleyball
“Rock Chalk” was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk chant was the best he had ever heard. Campanile Hill Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southeast of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.
The Jayhawk Waving The Wheat Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.
A song in one of these shows was “I’m a Jayhawk.” Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out “I’m a Jayhawk” once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the KU football stadium and student union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known nationally.
The Nickname During the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the “Independent Mounted Jayhawks” (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state.
What’s a Jayhawk? The University of Kansas is home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas.
By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the university’s football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them. The Fight Song George “Dumpy” Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to the KU spirit, but wasn’t athletic enough to do historic deeds on the athletic field. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows.
The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter. The message here: Don’t turn your back on this bird. The Alma Mater In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

Armed with five members of the starting rotation and the full-time libero from a year ago, Kansas volleyball head coach Ray Bechard will have a full arsenal of leadership complimented by a talented crew of underclassmen in 2011. “It’s always special,” Bechard said about starting his 14th season at Kansas. “There’s the freshmen apprehension, the returners and the ‘here we go again.’ When they walk out of the locker room that first time, even though I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, there is just this buzz I get – ‘Here we go, here we go.’ It never gets old.” A pair of Super-State freshmen will join a Jayhawk volleyball team ready to vie for its fourth NCAA Tournament

Season Outlook
appearance in eight seasons. Back-to-back seasons of winning records complete with marquee victories against top-25 opponents have Bechard focused on the task at hand heading into the fall.
“The good and bad of last year was there were many very good wins, but in the end we were still a little bit short of what our goal was – the NCAA Tournament,” Bechard said. “Obviously, we played on many occasions at a level that was good enough to be included with that group. Looking back now, we just need to find how to be at that ‘good’ level with some consistency.” The Jayhawks landed on the side Bechard preferred several times last fall, as the team finished the 2010 campaign with a 17-14 overall record and an 8-12 mark in Big 12 action. The 11 victories in front of the KU faithful at Horejsi Family Athletics Center tied for the most under Bechard’s watch, and included the Jayhawks’ upset of No. 10 Iowa State. “This year, I’m looking for a little more consistency and closing out some teams that we had the opportunity to close out,” Bechard said. “There were a lot positives from last year, but obviously the ultimate goal is to be included in that group that plays in the NCAA Tournament.” This summer, the Jayhawks spent nearly two weeks in Europe where they posted a 5-2 record in seven matches. Aside from strengthening pre-existing team chemistry, the time away proved even more beneficial for the 10 sophomores on the roster. The underclassmen crew gained a lot of in-game experience and now enter their second year with an advantage to meet their increased expectations. “There aren’t a lot of sophomores who’ve played almost 40 matches and had an extra 10 days of practice,” Bechard said. “We can’t sit back and say we

practiced and played a lot this summer so now we’re better. We’ve got to use that as a springboard and determine what we’ve learned from this. What did we get better at and what can we identify as some things we can tighten up before we get rolling.”
OUTSIDE HITTERS Watch List: Allison Mayfield (Sr.), Lauren Hagan (Sr.), Marianne Beal (So.), Catherine Carmichael (So.), Amy Wehrs (So.), Chelsea Albers (Fr.), Sara McClinton (Fr.), Taylor Manning (RS So.)
RELOADING FOR 2011 Letterwinners lost (4): Karina Garlington, Melissa Manda, Mel Townsend and Jenna Kaiser Newcomers (3): Chelsea Albers (Fr./OH) Taylor Manning (RS So./MB/OH) and Sara McClinton (Fr./OH)
FIRST IMPRESSION: “A couple people have to emerge from that group and be solid there for us to have the type of season we want to have,” Bechard said.
With the departure of Karina Garlington, the second-ranked all-time kills leader in program history, the Jayhawks lose a powerful scoring source. Garlington’s 3.51 kills per set (kps) led the team and ranked seventh in the Big 12 last season. Defensively, Melissa Manda (2.58 dps) took over as the program’s all-time digs leader in her final year with 1,457 digs in four seasons. Bechard acknowledges the impact Garlington, Manda and the 2010 senior class had on the team, but quickly turns to his excitement towards his trio of seniors, pair of juniors and a large nucleus of underclassmen that will collaborate this fall. “All of the seniors were instrumental in some capacity,” Bechard said. “But, we also had a large core of young kids, too. The best thing about freshmen is that they mature a year and become sophomores. Kaiser and Garlington created a lot of offense for us on the outside so there is a void there, but we feel like with our returners and newcomers that we have an opportunity to be solid in those positions. The maturity we have in other positions will make us stronger, too.”
22 2011 Kansas Volleyball
Three-year starter Allison Mayfield will lead an offensive attack that posted 13 kps as a team last season. Second only to Garlington in 2010, Mayfield’s 330 kills and 2.87 kps last season lead the returning core. Senior Lauren Hagan and sophomore Amy Wehrs will look to add to their contributions after seeing time in a combined 55 sets a year ago. “On the outside, that’s where Mayfield has been a threeyear starter for us,” Bechard said. “But there’s going to be a couple of other spots that the Marianne Beal’s, the Catherine Carmichael’s and the Amy Wehr’s bring back some experience in that position, but Chelsea (Albers) and Sara (McClinton) as freshmen will also get an opportunity”. A four year letterwinner at Papillion LaVista High School, Chelsea Albers was crowned the Omaha World Herald’s Girls’ 2010-11 Athlete of the Year for the state of Nebraska. After leading her team to its second-straight district championship her senior year, Albers was named to the Under Armour Girls High School All-America Second Team. The two-time Super-State honoree also helped power PLVHS to state championships in 2007 and 2008. The following year, Albers led the state of Nebraska with 487

Also a Nebraska native, Sara McClinton led Millard North High School to district championships in 2008 and 2010. After leading her team, McClinton was named all-Nebraska Super-State First Team her senior season. Continuously improving, she started her high school career as an allstate honorable mention member in 2008 and 2009. “The level they played at in high school and club volleyball certainly creates an environment that will allow for as smooth of a transition as we can hope for,” Bechard said. “They’ve given themselves the best chance to hit the ground running.”
DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBEROS Watch List: Brianne Riley (So.), Jaime Mathieu (So.), Morgan Boub (Jr.) FIRST IMPRESSION: “Our middle blockers will help us be pretty physical at the net, but our defense is also pretty quick in the group behind them,” Bechard said. “That combination should allow for us to be better defensively.” While the Jayhawks narrowly edged their opponents in kills a year ago with 1,511 kills to 1,508, the Crimson and Blue separated themselves even farther on the defensive side. The Kansas defenders averaged nearly 15 digs per set a year ago to their opponents’ 14.25 dps.
MIDDLE BLOCKERS Watch List: Caroline Jarmoc (So.), Tayler Tolefree (Jr.), Jessie Allen (So.)
All three members of the returning defensive unit reached 200 digs in 2010. Sophomore Jaime Mathieu (200) and junior Morgan Boub (292) each proved their value, while sophomore Brianne Riley shined in her rookie season.
FIRST IMPRESSION: “I’m very excited about the experience we bring back in the middle with (Tayler) Tolefree and (Caroline) Jarmoc,” Bechard said. “The experiences and practice Jessie (Allen) got on our trip to Italy really helped her, so I think that will be a real strength for us.”
As the nearly full-time libero, Riley finished the season in the top 10 in digs in the Big 12 with 4.11 dps, which was good for fourth all-time in KU history. Additionally, her 403 digs for the season put her eighth all-time in program history in a single season.
Sophomore Caroline Jarmoc and junior Tayler Tolefree will provide the blocking backbone for the 2011 edition of the Jayhawks after they paired up to lead the team in blocks last season. Tolefree’s 0.87 blocks per set (bps) was second only to Jarmoc’s 0.99 bps a year ago. They collected 212.0 of the team’s 256.5 blocks total blocks as a duo in 2010.
SETTERS Watch List: Nicole Tate (Sr.), Kara Wehrs (So.), Erin McNorton (So.)
“Jarmoc, Tolefree and Allen are all physical players, so we think the initial line of defense has the opportunity to have a little more of an impact,” Bechard said. “If the ball clears that, then we do have some experience behind them. That combination will create a little better defensive pointscoring mindset for us. There are other players that can enter into that mix.” Those other players Bechard predicts will have an impact on point scoring with the block include Albers, McClinton, Carmichael and Mayfield as well as sophomore setter Kara Wehrs. Mayfield racked up 57 total blocks last year, including 13 of the solo variety. The setters got involved at the net, too. Senior Nicole Tate and Wehrs joined forces for 61 combined blocks as more than two-thirds of the Jayhawks’ blocking production returns for the 2011 season.

kills in 2009 and was second in blocks. “How quickly we can integrate the two freshmen into the mix will be key,” Bechard said. “We’re not going to be dependent on freshmen to get us there, but we obviously think they can add to what we’re trying to do.”
FIRST IMPRESSION: “I like our setter crew,” Bechard said. “We can go with a one-setter system if we need to or we can switch into a two-setter system, which really helps with our versatility.” After starting her career as a Big 12 All-Freshman Team member, senior Nicole Tate will begin her final campaign with the Jayhawks as fifth all-time on the program’s career assist leaderboard (3,044). Tate’s 10.16 assists per set (aps) ranked fifth in the Big 12 to finish the 2010 season. During the 2010 season, Tate shared time with sophomore Kara Wehrs, who found her groove as a true freshman. Wehrs stared 12 matches and saw time in 47 sets, averaging nearly a kill per set (0.96) and 7.94 aps. Fellow sophomore Erin McNorton made the most of the five sets she checked into, tallying nearly two assists per set with a pair of digs.

Back-to-back preseason tournament titles kicked off the season as the Jayhawks jumped out to a 7-0 record a year ago. They claimed Creighton’s Bluejay Invitational and their own Jayhawk Classic in the opening weekends. The excitement took off from there when Bechard guided his crew to a 3-1 victory against No. 10 Iowa State on Oct. 9, 2010, marking KU’s first win against a top-10 opponent in program history. Of the Jayhawks’ 13 all-time wins against top-25 foes, all but one have come under Bechard’s direction. A year after his 900th career victory milestone in 2009, Bechard notched his 200th career win at Kansas during the 2010 season. The momentous achievement marked one of many for the veteran head coach. Entering his 14th season with the Jayhawks, Bechard has coached 74 Academic All-Big 12 selections, 11 All-Big 12 honorees and, most notably, he is the only coach in program history with an NCAA Tournament appearance on his resume, a feat which he accomplished for threestraight seasons from 2003-05. The Sunflower State native has established himself as the KU volleyball program’s winningest and longest-serving coach. He has compiled a remarkable all-time coaching record of 923-248 (.788 winning percentage) since arriving on the coaching scene 26 years ago as the head coach at Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kan. In 13 seasons at Kansas, Bechard has led the Jayhawks to a 207-188 mark and nine seasons at .500 or better. Additionally, Bechard has built a solid fan base for Kansas volleyball as the Jayhawks have consistently finished among the nation’s top 50 attendance leaders the last several years. Since his arrival at KU over a decade ago, Bechard’s teams have been making their mark in the KU record books, sitting atop numerous career lists. Bechard has helped develop the play of several standout players, including Lima, who took home All-Big 12 First Team honors all four years, as well as the 2002 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award as a freshman. Lima, KU’s all-time kills leader (1,483), joined middle blocker Amanda Reves (1996-99) as the two players to earn first-team league honors under Bechard. Lima also became the first player in KU history to be named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Region Team in 2003.

Coaches | Staff
Dr. Sheahon Zengersecond season Director of Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements was secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high grade-point averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a best-ever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of top-five finishers in league history. Zenger secured a five-year apparel contract for Redbird Athletics, and significantly increased the marketing of the program in the Central Illinois region, most notably with a campaign centered on the award-winning marketing campaign “Spread the Red.” He also witnessed record-setting attendance figures in football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, while seeing 17 Redbird teams advance to postseason play. In the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and MidAmerican Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State

as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).
Bernadette Gray-Littlethird season A highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on Aug. 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder.
Chancellor
Chancellor Gray-Little’s goals for KU include enhancing student achievement so that more KU students graduate in four years, as well as spurring more research and scholarly activities that enhance quality of life and create economic growth. During her first year as chancellor she also has made it a point to meet with Kansans and with KU alumni throughout the state and nation to learn about their aspirations for the university. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, she rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Saint Louis University. She earned a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Denmark. She also served as a Social Science Research Council Fellow and received a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Gray-Little is married to Shade Keys Little, who was assistant dean for academic support services at UNC. They have two adult children and one grandchild.

2010: Year in Review by Matt Franzblau, KU Media Relations Even though the 2010 KU women’s volleyball team won’t be playing in December, Ray Bechard’s team has to consider the season gone by as nothing but a success. First and foremost, the squad won more games (17) than it has in the past six seasons. The last time the Crimson and Blue volleyball squad reached the 17-win plateau was 2004, when 19 wins were good enough to propel the team into the second round of the NCAA tournament. “Ultimately our goal was to get to the NCAA tournament, so if you measure the success of the year against that obviously we were a little bit disappointed,” said Coach Bechard. “I think you have to be careful to surmise the entire season based on one of your goals because there were a lot of great things that happened.” One of those highlights came early on in the nonconference schedule in Omaha, Neb., at the Creighton Blue Jay Invitational. There, Bechard’s crew would win their first two matches against Lipscomb and San Francisco and then take the final one over host and eventual NCAA tournament team Creighton, 3-1. Another big ‘W’ came on Sept. 29, as the Jayhawks battled with archrival Missouri. The game was televised and played in front of a sellout crowd inside the Horejsi Family Athletic Center where the Jayhawks disposed of the Tigers in four sets, 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21. At the time, Bechard called his team’s performance, “The best night offensively we’ve had all season.”
ule,” Bechard said. “We beat five teams that were in the NCAA tournament and two that made it to the Sweet 16. There were four teams from the Big 12 still standing after the first round (Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska), so that obviously goes along with what we already knew, we play in a really competitive conference.” With its exciting victory over Oklahoma in Norman on the season’s final day, KU garnered some consideration for the team’s first tournament appearance in five years. “When you beat a team like that, it’s so disappointing,” Bechard said. “You’re playing so well at the end of the year and you’re not able to continue to compete, but the players returning got a very good indication of what level we have to play at and how hard it is.” Looking at some of those players’ seasons, senior Melissa Manda put her stamp on the KU volleyball program by becoming the school’s all-time digs leader. Her 292 digs this season put her in first place with a total of 1,457, surpassing Jill (Dorsey) Hall who held the record for six seasons with 1,338. “When you’ve dug more balls in the history of a program, that’s pretty special,” Bechard said. “She’s been on the floor for us a ton during the last four years, so I think that speaks volumes about Melissa’s attitude and effort.” “It makes me feel really special,” Manda said. “Just having an opportunity to play all four years and to know that my name will be up there until someone else knocks it down is pretty amazing.”
Beating Texas A&M both at home and on the road were two more substantial victories that Bechard points to, as well as the Oct. 9 win over No. 10 Iowa State at Horejsi. The upset of the Cyclones was the first win over a top-10 team in program history.
Senior Karina Garlington was recognized for her play by being named All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. The Denver, Colo., native finished the season with an average of 3.51 kills per set and is second in program history with 1,309 kills.

Bechard logged his 200th victory as KU head coach in a match that his Jayhawks took in five sets over Texas A&M on Sept. 18. Bechard is the all-time winningest KU volleyball coach, a title he claimed back in the 2007 season when he passed Frankie Albitz (1985-1993), with his 151st career win.
“It’s great to have coached here that long,” Bechard said. “When you take a job, you never know what it’s going to bring, so to have the opportunity to be here long enough to win 200 matches, that’s significant.” Bechard and the Jayhawks look toward 2011 with much promise. That’s because they will return a seasoned upper class with Lauren Hagan, Allison Mayfield and Nicole Tate assuming a larger leadership role as the squad’s seniors next season.

said. “She was named AVCA National Player of the Week last year as well as Big 12 Player of the Week. We thought she got better in her blocking and some of her releases off the net, so she wasn’t just a one dimensional player. We’ll definitely miss her athleticism.”
Bechard’s junior class will have another year under their belt and will return two players, including middle blocker Tayler Tolefree and defensive specialist Morgan Boub. The 10-member sophomore squad will be led by libero Brianne Riley, who dug the eighth-most balls in a Jayhawk single-season with 403, followed by fellow defensive specialist Jaime Mat -hieu, outside hitters Marianne Beal, Amy Wehrs, setters Erin McNorton and Kara Wehrs as well as middle blockers Jessie Allen and Caroline Jarmoc. “We will lose a lot on the outside with Jenna (Kaiser) and Karina (Garlington), but we’ve signed a couple of kids that we’re excited about,” said Coach Bechard. “We’ve also got some players in the program that we feel can step up and make added contributions next season. Now we’re just working hard to get the program to another level where we’re a consistent performer in the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA tournament.”
