Kansas Volleyball earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. The Jayhawks defeated national power Long Beach State before bowing out to No. 4 Pepperdine.

This season the NCAA has u ppe d t he allowable number of substitutions from 1 2 to 15. Though the rule will prove be n e ficial to every position, none more so th an t h e d efensive specialists. Twice last season, five Kansas defe n de r s recorded double-digit digs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a feat KU h ad n ot a chieved since the 2009 season. Fur th e r m ore, t he Jayhawks dug 96 balls at Bay lor last October, the most by a Big 12 team in a fou r s e t meeting. In all, five Jayhawk s finish e d t h e s e a son with 150-plus digs. Four of the m are b ack in 2012, including returning leader s Riley a nd Boub. Janae Hall LOST None One of the most experienced positions on the team, the middle blocking crew will be asked to step up in several ways in 2012. Assistant coach Laura “Bird” Kuhn works primarily with the middles and wasted no time making her mark as the Jayhawk defense elevated to a new level in 2011. As a unit, KU ranked third in the Big 12 with 2.57 blocks per set, good for 36th in the NCAA. The Jayhawks recorded nearly 100 more block assists than they did in 2010 and handily out-blocked their opponents (2.6 bps/2.0 bps). Led by All-Big 12 Preseason Team member Caroline Jarmoc, the Jayhawks bring back senior Tayler Tolefree and junior Jessie Allen while welcoming incoming freshman Janae Hall to form a potent front line. With an impressive 1.25 blocks per set, Jarmoc ranked second in the league in blocking at the conclusion of the 2011 season. What ’s more, the Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native appeared on several of the Big 12’s top-10 lists in 2011, including attack percentage (.311), kills (2.92 kills per set), points (3.93 points per set) and checked in at second in service aces (0.28 aces per set) – proving her value both defensively and offensively. Jarmoc is only a piece of the puzzle, however, as

Tolefree sets her sights on an explosive senior year. Like Jarmoc, Tolefree was also a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honoree a year ago and finished in the top-five in the conference in blocks per set (1.14, 5th). A Lawrence native, Tolefree tends to lead by example and was the only Jayhawk last year to post a double-double comprised of kills and blocks (17 kills/ 11 blocks vs. Valparaiso). Not merely a defensive unit, Jarmoc and Tolefree lead the team’s returning offense with 324 and 224 kills in 2011, respectively. Only one Jayhawk in program history owns a better career attack percentage than Jarmoc ’s .289 (Ashley Michaels, .314). Playing behind two of the strongest middle blockers in the league has helped junior Jessie Allen ready herself to step in when needed, while freshman Janae Hall is quickly adapting to the pace of the college game. Hall shows signs of making a smooth transition. The Centennial, Colo., native was named to the 2011 USA Girls Youth National Team that competed at the World Youth Championships in Anarka, Turkey and was listed by ESPN Rise as one of the top 25 players in the incoming 2012 class.

The winningest coach in Kansas volleyball history has compiled a remarkable all-time coaching record of 938-2262 (.782 winning percentage) since arriving on the coaching scene 27 years ago as the head coach at Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kan. In 14 seasons at Kansas, Bechard has led the Jayhawks to a 222-202 mark and 10 seasons at .500 or better. Additionally, Bechard has built a solid fan base for Kansas volleyball as the Jayhawks have consistently finished among the nation’s top 50 attendance leaders the last several years. In 2010, nearly 1,000 fans filled Horejsi Family Athletics Center for every home match - good for the 48th best in the country. Bechard has guided the Jayhawks to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2003, 2004, 2005), the first in program history and seven-straight AVCA Team Academic awards. Individually, the veteran head coach has coached 13 AllBig 12 honorees, 84 Academic All-Big 12 selections, nine AVCA Academic AllRegion recipients and two AVCA AllRegion players - highlighted by 2011’s Caroline Jarmoc’s All-Central Region recognition. The veteran coach enters 2012 following his second stint with Team USA Volleyball. Bechard was one of eight collegiate coaches selected by USA Volleyball to lead the U.S. Women’s National A2 Team Program at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus,

In 2011, the Jayhawks posted their best start at 11-1 since the 2002 season, including three preconference tournament titles and knocking off No. 6 Minnesota, the highest-ranked opponent defeated in program history. Under Bechard’s direction, KU has pulled top-25 upsets in four of the past five seasons. Of the Jayhawks’ 14 all-time wins against top-25 foes, all but one came under Bechard’s direction. Additionally, Kansas upped its game at the net, finishing the 2011 season ranked third in the Big 12 in blocks per set. Jarmoc and fellow middle blocker Tayler Tolefree each checked in at top-five in the Big 12 in individual blocks per set. Bechard also witnessed Allison Mayfield lead the conference in kills per set on her way to becoming KU’s all-time leader for kills in a season (462, 2011). The Jayhawks spent three-straight weeks receiving votes on the AVCA Top-25 Poll last season. In 2010, Bechard brought in the 26th-ranked recruiting class according to PrepVolleyball.com. Kansas posted a 17-14 record, the most victories recorded since the team’s 19-win season in 2004. Those 17 wins resulted from an intense schedule that included six nationally ranked opponents. In the Jayhawks’ 31 matches, 14 of them paired Kansas against teams that went on play in the NCAA Tournament. A year after his 900th career victory milestone in 2009, Bechard notched his 200th career win at Kansas during the 2010 season. He starts 2012 just 12 wins away from his 950th career victory. His players routinely exhibit Bechard’s belief in being dedicated on the court and in the classroom.

THIS IS KANSAS PLAYERS COACHES AND STAFF 2011 REVIEW HISTORY AND RECORDS Aside from winning the AVCA Team Academic Award seven-consecutive years, Bechard’s squad has led the Kansas Athletics department in team GPA in the last three semesters. In 2011, KU tied the conference record with 10 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 team. In addition, Mayfield and Tolefree were CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees in 2011, while Karina Garlington was a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honoree in 2008 and 2010. In 2008, Bechard’s team enjoyed national recognition when Garlington was named the school’s second AVCA National Player of the Week on Nov. 10. In addition, Nicole Tate earned 2008 Big 12 All-Freshman team honors. During the 2007 season, Bechard and his team put together a 3-2 upset over No. 18 Oklahoma, the sixth-straight season KU upset a ranked team, and a four-game victory against tournamentbound Missouri State, which made Bechard the winningest coach in KU volleyball history. The Jayhawks also picked up a win at Missouri, marking their first road win in Columbia since 2001. The 2007 season saw the graduation of standout Emily Brown. Brown left her name scattered all over the KU record books as she became the first Jayhawk to reach the 1,000 milestone in kills, digs and assists, while also landing on five top-10 career lists. In 2006, KU picked up a Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year selection in Natalie Uhart. Uhart later suffered a season-ending injury prior to the team’s first contest and that seemed to set the tone for the year as the Jayhawks were hampered with injuries over the course of the season. However, the team still collected several accomplishments during the 2006 season including a tournament title at

Temple to start off the year. In addition, the team dug up 15.81 balls per game, its highest dig average since the 2001 season. Just one year earlier in 2005, Bechard led the Jayhawks to a 15-15 overall record and their third-straight postseason appearance. Despite a depleted roster due to injuries, KU battled No. 16 UCLA to four games in Los Angeles in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The 2005 season also saw the careers of three talented seniors, Josi Lima, Paula Caten and Andi Rozum, come to a close. Caten became KU’s first Academic All-American in volleyball, while Lima, KU’s only four-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, finished her career as the Jayhawks’ all-time kills leader and one of the most prolific volleyball players in school history. Rozum’s name still sits at the top of the career assists list. In addition to his team’s achievements and the individual successes of his seniors, Bechard reached a significant milestone on Sept. 10, 2005, when he coached his 1,000th career match. The Jayhawks commemorated the milestone by defeating visiting Michigan State, 3-0. In 2004, KU returned to the NCAA Tournament for the secondstraight season and fell just short of a Sweet 16 appearance. The Jayhawks defeated Santa Clara, 3-1, before falling to host Washington, 3-2, in secondround action. KU came back from a two-game deficit to battle the Huskies, who advanced to the Final Four and then won the National Championship in 2005.

The 2003 season became another celebrated year as KU achieved the most victories since 1991 (22) and the fourth most in program history, the most conference wins in school history (13) and the highest finish in the conference race (tied for third) since joining the Big 12 in 1996. The greatest highlight of the 2003 season came when Bechard and the Jayhawks were invited to participate in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. KU shocked powerhouse Long Beach State by sweeping the 49ers 3-0 in First Round action before falling to host No. 4 Pepperdine 3-1 in the NCAA Second Round in Malibu, Calif. Bechard also reached two significant coaching milestones in 2003 as he recorded his 800th career victory and 100th win at Kansas.

Since his arrival at KU, Bechard’s teams have been making their mark in the KU record books, sitting atop numerous career lists. Bechard has helped develop the play of several standout players, including Lima, who took home All-Big 12 First Team honors all four years, as well as the 2002 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award as a freshman. Lima, KU’s all-time kills leader (1,483), joined middle blocker Amanda Reves (199699) as the two players to earn firstteam league honors under Bechard. Lima also became the first player in KU history to be named to the AVCA All-Region Team in 2003. Katie Martinich was named the Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year for the 200708 academic year and Jennifer Kraft (1999-2002) earned the Big 12 Defensive Specialist award in 2002, while Ashley Michaels (2001-04) was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection for twostraight years.

Michaels concluded her KU career as the program’s leader in attack percentage (.317) and finished second behind Reves in block assists (324) and blocks per game (1.03). Bechard came to KU after spending 13 years as the head coach at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. After a stellar coaching career at BCCC, Bechard was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1998.

He was also a member of the board of directors of the AVCA from 1992-98 and has presented at the AVCA National Convention on two different occasions. A native of Grinnell, Kan., Bechard played basketball at Barton County, where he helped the Cougars to a 45-13 record in his two seasons there.

Two years later, he received his master’s degree in physical education from Fort Hays State. The Grinnell, Kan., native is married to the former Pamela Brown. The couple has two children. Their daughter Ashley was a KU letterwinner in volleyball from 200104, and married Erik Henkelman in 2011. Their son, Brennan, who played on the Kansas men’s basketball team from 2007-09, now works on the men’s basketball staff.

Following his junior college playing In 13 seasons at Barton County, Bechard posted a career record of 716-60 (.923 winning percentage) and coached 23 Academic AllAmericans. He completed his career at BCCC with the highest all-time winning percentage among junior college/community college coaches and ranked fourth all-time with 716 career wins. Twice (1990 and 1993) Bechard was named the AVCA National Junior College Coach of the Year, and he was selected the AVCA District IV Coach of the Year 12 times. In 1995, he was an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball Youth National Team which won the Slovakian Cup Championship in Zilina, Slovakia. Bechard, who was the only nonDivision I coach on the staff, coached alongside TCU’s Sandy Troudt and Penn State assistant Erin Tomblin. The team competed against youth teams from Poland and Slovakia. Bechard began his coaching career when he served three years (198083) as head coach of the girls’ volleyball team and the boys’ basketball team at Lewis High School in Lewis, Kan. Former Georgia Tech standout Laura Kuhn was named a volleyball assistant coach for the University of Kansas on March 22, 2011. She enters her second season as the top assistant on Ray Bechard’s staff.

Kuhn, affectionately known as `Bird,’ was a four-year volleyball letterwinner at Georgia Tech from 2001-2004. She joined the coaching ranks following her playing career and came to Kansas after spending three years as an assistant at Miami from 2008-10. She has also made coaching stops as an assistant coach at Appalachian State and Florida State. In her first season with the Jayhawks, Kuhn’s presence made an immediate impact. She worked closely with the middle blockers. The Jayhawks finished the regular season third in the Big 12 conference with 2.57 blocks per set, good for 36th in the NCAA. The Jayhawks recorded nearly 100 more block assists than last season’s squad and for the first time since Bechard’s debut season in 1998, Kansas outblocked its opponents (2.6 bps/2.0 bps). Under Kuhn’s watch, middle blockers Caroline Jarmoc and Tayler Tolefree brought Kansas’ defense to a whole new level in 2011. For the first time in 14 seasons, KU posted more blocks on the season than its opponents. Jarmoc ended the year at second all-time in career blocks per set (1.12), tied for third-all time on KU’s single-season block assists list (115) and blocks per set (1.25) and fourth in total blocks in a single season (139).

Tolefree was the only Jayhawk to post a double-double this season with kills and blocks (17 kills/11 blocks vs. Valparaiso) and also ended the year on the KU’s all-time top-10 list in single season total blocks (127, 6th), block assists (109, 7th) and blocks per set (1.14, T-8th). Jarmoc and Tolefree finished the season ranked second and fifth in the Big 12, respectively, in blocks per set. While on staff with the Hurricanes, UM advanced to the NCAA Tournament two of the three seasons (2009 & 2010) Kuhn was on staff. It marked the second and third tournament berths since the program was brought back in 2001. At Miami, Kuhn, affectionately known as `Bird,’ was instrumental in coaching outside hitter Lane Carico, who became the program’s firstever AVCA All-American in 2010. One season earlier, Carico and Cassie Loessberg were named honorable mention All-Americans under Kuhn’s guidance. In 2008, she helped in the Hurricanes posting their best overall record (266) since 2002, and the best Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record in school history going 14-6 in league play. Defensively, the Hurricanes posted the highest digs total (1,958) for a single-season in 2008, while also registering the highest digs per set count in UM history (16.88). Kuhn arrived at Miami after a stint as assistant coach at FSU during the 2008 spring season. Prior to her

In 2007 with the Mountaineers, Kuhn coached the Southern Conference Player of the Year, Brittany Zahn, and worked under Matt Ginipro, who was the SoCon Coach of the Year after Appalachian State finished 14-2. The two previous years, Kuhn spent coaching A5 Club teams in Atlanta as the head coach of a team consisting of 17-year-olds in 2006 and as an assistant with the 14-year-old club in 2005. During her four years playing at Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets won three ACC regular season championships, one ACC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of her four seasons playing. The teams advanced to the “Sweet 16” and “Elite Eight” in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Kuhn played the right side position her final three years at Georgia Tech, starting all three seasons. A native of Tiffin, Ohio, Kuhn was a twosport star at Calvert High School, where she excelled at both volleyball and basketball. While in high school, Kuhn earned Junior Olympic All-America honors for the Toledo Volleyball Club in 2000. Kuhn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Georgia Tech in 2005.

Todd Chamberlain begins his third year as an assistant coach at Kansas for the 2012 season. At KU, Chamberlain trains the Jayhawks’ outside attackers and serves as the team’s video coordinator and alumni contact, while assisting with recruitment.

Under Chamberlain’s watch, outside hitter Allison Mayfield turned in a Big 12-best 4.16 kills per set in 2011 en route to becoming the Jayhawks’ all-time kills leader in a single season (462). Mayfield was later named to the All-Big 12 team. He was highly instrumental in the development of Chelsea Albers and Sara McClinton, who each took on starting roles in their freshman season (2011). McClinton finished third on the team with 2.34 kills per set. In 2010, Chamberlain’s first season, the Jayhawks broke the 1,500-kill mark as a team.

Chamberlain arrived at Kansas following a one-year stint as the volunteer assistant women’s coach at the University of Kentucky, during which the Wildcats experienced one of the most successful seasons in program history. In 2009, Kentucky finished 29-5 overall, appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive year and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1992. While at UK, three players earned AllAmerica honors, including honorable mention outside hitter Sarah Mendoza. Mendoza finished the season as the Southeastern Conference leader with 4.12 kps.

Chamberlain played volleyball for four seasons at Ball State University, where he earned first-team AllMidwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) honors as a senior after pacing the squad with 3.29 kills per set. Ball State was nationally ranked for portions of all four of Chamberlain’s seasons; the Cardinals compiled a 78-39 (.667) record during those years. No stranger to the coaching sidelines, Chamberlain has guided several teams to national and state titles. For two seasons Chamberlain worked as an assistant coach under Steve Shondell for Burris High School in Muncie, Ind. The Burris squad captured the 2-A state championship in both 2008 and 2009. Chamberlain also worked with Mike Lingerfelter as an assistant coach for the Munciana Samurai 18-1 Club team. That squad went on to capture not only the 2009 AAU national championship, but also the 2009 JVDA national championship. In addition to his collegiate playing career, Chamberlain was a left side attacker on the 2006 Youth National team that played internationally in Cabo Frio, Brazil. In 2007, Chamberlain was a left side attacker for the Junior National training team that practiced at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Chamberlain has served as a camp counselor for camps at Kentucky, Purdue and his alma mater. Additionally, Chamberlain has

In his new role at KU, Camargo will helps train the defensive specialists and liberos, while also assisting with in-office recruiting tasks and Data Volley entry. Prior to relocating to the United States, Camargo was a member of the coaching staff for Dominican Republic National Team- Santo Domingo from 2009-12. Camargo worked with the adult and junior national women’s teams, including the 2012 FIVB (Federation of International Volleyball)/NORCECA Olympic Qualifiers.

At the conclusion of his first season, Camargo helped coach the national team to a 2010 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship, the 2010 FIVB/NORCECA Final Four Women’s Volleyball Cup and a second-place finish at the 2010 FIVB/NORCECA Wo r l d Championship Qualifiers. In the following season, Camargo helped the team finish second at the 2011 FIVB Pan American Cup. Prior to his time with the Dominican Republic National Team, Camargo coached in his home country of Brazil, including a stint in 2009 as the head coach at University of Sao Paulo.

Aimee Miyazawa enters her eighth season as a member of the Kansas Athletics training staff where she is responsible for the prevention, care, rehabilitation and maintenance of the Kansas volleyball team’s injuries and illnesses. In Oct. 2011, Miyazawa was selected to work the 16th Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she worked primarily with women’s indoor volleyball, as well as the men’s team while keeping regular hours staffing the Team USA clinic. Additionally, Miyazawa spent time in June 2009 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., working for the USOC Volunteer Medical Program. She worked with a variety of different athletes including those in sprint kayak, BMX, cycling, archery and speed skating. Also, during summer 2008 Miyazawa served as a trainer for the USA national men’s volleyball team, which won the gold medal in the PanAmerican Cup.

Miyazawa came to the Jayhawk program following a fellowship with the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, Colo., during the 2004-05 academic year. While at the Olympic Training Center, Miyazawa worked primarily with the women’s volleyball, weightlifting and men’s freestyle wrestling national teams. Her travels with the women’s volleyball national team took her to China, Korea, Thailand and the Dominican Republic. Prior to her stint in Colorado Springs, Miyazawa spent two years as a graduate assistant trainer at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she worked with volleyball and indoor/outdoor track and field. Miyazawa graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and went on to receive a master’s in physical education from NebraskaKearney in August 2004.

Graduate strength and conditioning coach Luke Bradford enters his third year with the Kansas volleyball program. As the Jayhawks’ strength coach, Bradford is in charge of designing and implementing a year-round strength program for the KU volleyball team. He also works with the team’s athletic trainer to apply rehabilitation methods and strategies for injured players as well as injury prevention. In addition to volleyball, Bradford displays his diverse background in several areas of sport as he also works with Kansas’ swimming and diving and baseball teams. Bradford, who is currently working towards a master’s in exercise science at KU, came to Lawrence from Friendswood, Texas, where he spent seven years working at Xcel Performance and Fitness. While at Xcel, Bradford worked with athletes of all ages

with speed development programs. He assisted physical therapists with the evaluation of patients by way of biomechanical gait and running analysis, while also implementing rehabilitation strategies. Bradford is a certified strength and conditioning coach through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He also holds certifications from USA Weight Lifting (Level 1) and USA Track and Field (Level 1) and is a trained Muscle Activation Techniques Specialist. A 2001 graduate of Emporia State, Bradford holds a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in physical education and coaching. He and his wife, Emily, have a daughter, Marygrace.

Debbie Van Saun joined the Kansas Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator in August 2007.

In July 2011, Van Saun was named Senior Associate Athletics Director. At Kansas, Van Saun directly supervises selected sports and provides administrative guidance to those coaches and their programs. Those selected sports include women’s basketball, rowing, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, swimming and diving and volleyball.

Van Saun came to KU from the City of Lawrence, where she served in numerous positions: as assistant city manager, assistant utilities director, assistant finance director and collections supervisor. Her roles with the City date back to 1979 and concluded when she came to KU in 2007.

In addition, Van Saun oversees Student-Athlete Development, Sports Medicine, Travel, Risk Management, and works closely with student-athletes regarding financial aid, housing, summer school, fifth-year aid and other pertinent areas. It is Van Saun’s responsibility to monitor Kansas Athletics’ efforts to comply with Title IX and NCAA

Van Saun earned two degrees from KU, a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in Public Administration.

Jim Marchiony was hired as Associate Athletics Director for External Relations at the University of Kansas in August 2003. In July, 2011, Marchiony was named Associate Athletics Director Communications/Media Relations. He oversees the licensing efforts for Kansas Athletics, as well as the media relations and video departments. He is also responsible for oversight of the Kansas Athletics website and oversees the sports of Tennis and Volleyball. Marchiony came to Lawrence from the University of Connecticut where he served as Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. His primary duties at UConn involved television and radio, marketing, corporate sponsorships, licensing and sports communications.

NCAA, serving the last five years as media coordinator for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Before serving as media coordinator, Marchiony served in various communications roles, primarily dealing with television and media relations. Before serving at the NCAA, Marchiony was Director of Sports Information at Georgetown University and Iona College. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from St. Bonaventure University. He and his wife, Mary Beth, who is head of school for Topeka Collegiate, have one son, Donald, a dual-degree graduate of the University of Kansas.

Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their studentathletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements was secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high grade-point averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a bestever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird studentathletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU studentathletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of topfive finishers in league history. In the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and MidAmerican Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation.

In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff

members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

Bernadette GRAY-LITTLE CHANCELLOR THIRD SEASON AT KANSAS PH.D. IN PSYCHOLOGY | ST. LOUIS UNIVERSITY

A highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on Aug. 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder.

received a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Gray-Little is married to Shade Keys Little, who was assistant dean for academic support services at UNC. They have two adult children and one grandchild.

Chancellor Gray-Little’s goals for KU include enhancing student achievement so that more KU students graduate in four years, as well as spurring more research and scholarly activities that enhance quality of life and create economic growth. During her first year as chancellor she also has made it a point to meet with Kansans and with KU alumni throughout the state and nation to learn about their aspirations for the university. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, she rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Saint Louis University. She earned a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Denmark. She also served as a Social Science Research Council Fellow and

2012 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS -Kansas finished the season 15-14, KU’s third-straight season with a winning record. The Jayhawks kicked off 2011 with three pre-conference tournament titles en route to an 11-1 start, the best since the 2002 season. That included defeating the highest-ranked opponent in program history, then-No. 6 Minnesota, in five sets at the Northern Iowa Invitational. KU has defeated at least one top-25 opponent in four of the last five seasons. -Although the Jayhawks tied a season-low for Big 12 wins in the Ray Bechard era with a 3-13 record (3-17, 2006), they brought a high level of

Iowa State, who reached a program-best No. 2 RPI ranking, was the only team to sweep Kansas in both meetings. In 16 conference matches, KU played 64 sets, taking at least one set from every Big 12 foe minus Iowa State. Ultimately, Kansas won 22 sets against Big 12 foes and lost 16 by three points or less. -Of the NCAA Tournament’s 16 national seeds, Kansas forced five-set matches with four of them (Texas, Texas A&M, Northern Iowa and defeated Minnesota). In all, KU faced 10 opponents that

Jarmoc and Tolefree finished the season ranked second and fifth in the Big 12, respectively, in blocks per set. -Jarmoc also did work on the offensive side of the net, finishing second on the team behind Mayfield with 324 kills for 2.92 kills per set. Her accuracy was more notable; her .311 attack percentage ranked in the Big 12’s top 10 and is second all-time by a Jayhawk. -Sophomore libero Brianne Riley followed up a successful freshman campaign with an even more impressive sophomore year. Riley posted nine 20plus dig efforts in 2011, en route to 482 digs on the season. That ranks third alltime by a Jayhawk, while her 4.34 digs per set this season were fourth in the Big 12 and is fourth-most all-time in KU history. She set her career-high with 34 digs against Baylor on Oct. 1. Only one other Big 12 libero posted more digs in a match this season (Kristen Hahn, ISU). RECAP Kansas mowed through the first four weeks of the season despite being on the road for nine of the first 12 matches. The Jayhawks opened the season at the University of Georgia, sweeping Florida A&M, Liberty and SEC foe Georgia. Liberty, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Big South Conference, was the first of two teams Kansas would hold to a 25-9 score in 2011. From there, Kansas dropped its first set of the season in a 3-1 win over Belmont before sweeping Appalachian State and South Dakota State to win its own Jayhawk Invitational.

Ironically, the only pre-conference tournament the Jayhawks did not win stood to be their most impressive when KU traveled to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the Northern Iowa Invitational. KU opened the third weekend of the year by taking then-No. 15 UNI to five sets on its home floor before rebounding to defeat then-No. 6 Minnesota the next morning. Both would go on to earn national seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Kansas finished the tournament with a sweep over Saint Louis to go 2-1 during the weekend in Iowa. KU defeated San Diego State, Valparaiso and tournament-host DePaul to win its final non-conference tournament before opening conference play. Following its 11-1 start, Kansas received votes on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Top 25 Poll for three-straight weeks (Sept. 12Oct. 2), peaking at 61 votes - just two spots away from cracking the top 25.

times in Big 12 play, KU recorded more kills, a better hitting percentage and more digs. The Jayhawks out-blocked their conference counterparts 10 times in 16 matches. In all, KU recorded a pair of wins over Texas Tech and beat Baylor in the final match of the season. The Jayhawks’ 25-9 victory in their final set against the Bears stood out for several reasons. For the first time since the NCAA 25-point scoring rule went into effect (2008), Kansas held not one, but two, opponents to a single-digit in a set. It also marked the first time since the rule change that Baylor had ever been held to a single-digit score in a set. The next day, Baylor was selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.

When the NCAA’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) projections were released for the first time on Oct. 17, KU debuted at No. 39 and would spend the next four weeks in the top 45. The Jayhawks finished the season at No. 47, the highest-ranked RPI team to not make the postseason. Kansas opened Big 12 play against nationally-ranked duo Texas and Iowa State, which resulted in the team’s first defeats via sweeps of the year. Aside from its second meeting with ISU later in the year, KU would not be swept again.

After winning game one, the third-seeded Jayhawks were outlasted by the top-seeded Waves at the Firestone Fieldhouse on the Pepperdine University campus.
