RACEDAY In 2013, Kansas rowing began a new tradition at its home away from home - the Kansas Boathouse at Burcham Park. For the last two seasons, the Jayhawks have invited several teams to come to the Kansas River and participate in the Jayhawk Jamboree. Its home river and river banks play the perfect host to the fall head race. More than 2,000 fans come out to partake in not only the rowing, but the great atmosphere. In the spring, Kansas hosts its home events at the Wyandotte County Lake in neighboring Kansas City.

ROWING 101

THE EVOLUTION OF ROWING Rowing, or crew as it is sometimes called, is the oldest intercollegiate sport in America. The first sporting contest of any kind between two universities was a rowing race between Harvard and Yale in 1852. That race is still held annually. The first formal women’s rowing program began in 1877 at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. Rowing is an NCAA championship sport for women only. The first championship meet was held in 1997 at Rancho Cordova, California. Division II and Division III championships were added in 2002. Rowing continues to grow immensely in popularity, as the number of NCAA programs has grown from 74 in 1997 to over 140 in 2011. There are annually 22 schools invited to participate in the NCAA Championships. The Division I Championships consist of 11 schools that will be automatic qualifiers by winning their conference championship and 11 schools that will be at-large selections. KU can earn automatic qualifier status by winning the Big 12 Championship. The 2015 NCAA Championships will take place May 30-June 1 in Indianapolis.

A typical spring season competition consists of six races that are scored to determine the team winner. Points are awarded based on the team’s finish in each race. The races are: First and Second Varsity Eight, First and Second Varsity Four, and First and Second Novice Eight. The First Varsity Eight is scored at the highest level with the other races awarding fewer team points. Rowers possess good strength and aerobic endurance characteristics. Athletes in this sport must thrive in a team environment. With eight rowers and one coxswain in a boat performing a common task, everyone must have a strong commitment to her teammates to bring the boat to racing speed. ROWING - THE SPORT At the Olympic and intercollegiate level, rowing races are 2,000 meters long (about 1.25 miles), which takes approximately six to seven minutes to complete. As many as seven boats can race at a given time. Each boat can hold from one to eight rowers and

usually has an additional person, known as the coxswain (COX-sun), who steers and helps the team execute workouts and race strategy. Rowers practice in a variety of boats, however, almost all of the races are in four or eight person boats with a coxswain. ROWING AT KU Rowing at KU is a varsity sport, which means it is one of 18 sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball, that are administered and funded by the Athletic Department. The Athletic Department covers all the expenses of the women’s rowing team including equipment, travel, uniforms and scholarships. Rowing started as a club sport at KU in 1978 and was given full varsity status in 1995. Each year, the rowing team has an average team size of about 75 women. NOVICE ROWING The team is comprised of two squads: the varsity squad, for athletes who are returning to row in their second, third or fourth year of competition, and the novice squad, for athletes in their first year of collegiate

TIPS FROM THE PROS and routinely travels to California, the East coast and the southern states for various competitions. Rowing races, or regattas, are almost always held on weekends, so team travel usually involves little or no missed class. PRACTICE

competition. The vast majority of novices have no previous rowing experience prior to attending college. The novice squad races against the novices from other schools. Novices are not expected to race against more experienced athletes from other programs. However, occasionally very talented newcomers can be moved up to row with the varsity in their first year. Both the varsity and novice squads are considered varsity athletes at KU and enjoy all the benefits that the Athletic Department offers, including academic advising and tutoring, training room and weight room access and adidas sponsorship, which includes all workout and racing apparel. RACING The competitive season for rowing is in the spring from mid-March to the end of May. In the fall, the team competes in longdistance races to break up the training and acclimate themselves to a different style of competition. KU races its Big 12 Conference opponents in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas,

Training for the racing season begins shortly after school begins in the fall in order to make sure everyone is ready to compete to the best of their ability in the spring. Practice on the water occurs in the fall and spring seasons and winter training is on land. Additional workouts with the strength and conditioning staff take place thoughout the year in the Anderson Strength Center. This winter, the team will take a training trip to Florida to work out in warmer conditions. The KU rowing team carefully adheres to NCAA regulations concerning the amount of practice each athlete must complete with the goal centered around becoming a great student-athlete while leading a wellrounded life at KU. WHAT MAKES A GOOD ROWER? Rowers are generally athletes with good strength and aerobic endurance. Being tall helps but is not always a measure of success. Athletes in this sport must thrive in a team environment. With eight rowers in a boat doing the same thing, everyone must have a strong commitment to her teammates to make the boat go as fast as possible. SCHOLARSHIPS Rowing has 20 full scholarships, which can be divided up between members of the team. That is more than any other women’s sport at the NCAA level and second only to football among all teams. Typically, more than 40 members of the team earn a partial scholarship every year.

BREAKING DOWN THE BOAT

Which rowers sit in which seats takes a lot of strategy. Typically, the most fundamentally sound rowers sit in seats seven and eight, while the bow pair (seats one and two) are lighter and do more turning. The middle four seats are occupied by the strongest rowers.

FEEL THE BURN

In one 2,000-meter race, a rower burns as many calories as they would playing two basketball games back-to-back.

PAIR UP

Rowers begin the learning process by rowing in pairs, or boats built for two. It’s commonly known among the rowing community that “if you can row a pair, you can row anything.”

COACHES ON THE WATER

Unlike most team sports, the coaching staff can’t talk to their athletes once competition gets underway. Thus, the coxswains actually act as the “coach” on the water, guiding and directing the boat.

SPREAD THE STRENGTH

Although it looks like rowers’ arms would be the most important factor, in reality about 70 percent of the stroke comes from their legs and 20 percent from their backs. Only the remaining 10 percent comes from arms.

SYNERGY

Rowing is the ultimate team sport. It’s not the strongest athletes, but the ones that work together the best that create the fastest boat.

THE RACES Head races usually take place in the fall on rivers; for example, the Head of the Hooch and the Head of the Oklahoma. Rowers, starting the course one after the other about 15 seconds apart, navigate three miles of river around bends and under bridges. WATCHING THE RACE SIGNS OF SUCCESS: CONSISTENCY Continuous, fluid motion of rowers. SYNCHRONIZATION Rowers strive for perfect synchronization in the boat. CATCH Clean catches with the blade. Excess splashing means the blades are not entering the water correctly. BLADEWORK When the blades are brought out of the water, they should all move horizontally at the same height, just above the water. SPEED The shells donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t move a consistent speed - slowest at the catch, quickest at the release. A good crew times the catch at the right moment to maintain the speed of the shell. STROKES Strokes per minute. An eight can achieve a higher stroke rate than a single. A tall rower can take less strokes per minute than someone smaller and still move faster.

2013-14 SEASON RECAP

The Kansas rowing program began the spring portion of their 2014 season with a trip to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Louisville Invitational. KU ended the first day of competition with six top-10 finishes, including placing first in the First Varsity Four (7:34.8). Making up the first-place boat were rowers Jackie Adamle, Carly Iverson, Jessica Jacob, coxswain Abbey Lozenski and Emma Umbarger. The Jayhawks would add two more first-place finishes in day two of the competition, winning the Third Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Four. Next up for KU was the Spring Training Regatta at Clemson University where the Jayhawks would face off with Buffalo, Duke, Iowa, Purdue and 19thranked Clemson. Kansas would hold its own against the stiff competition, posting a trio of top-three finishes, including a second-place finish in the Second Varsity Four. Members of the boat were juniors Erin Brogan, Alexa Fowlkes, Jennifer Hartzler, coxswain Sarah Lasini and sophomore Jackie Adamle. Kansas would return home and turn its focus toward the Sunflower Showdown and rival Kansas State. The Jayhawks opened up the day with a victory in the Fourth Varsity Eight en route to four first-place finishes in the regatta highlighted by the Novice

Four, Second Varsity Four and First Varsity Four. The rowers then headed to the Golden State and competed in the Lake Natoma Invitational in Sacramento to finish out the regular season, squaring off with six top-20 teams. KU opened the two-day event with five top-three finishes, including a second place finish in the First Novice Eight led by coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, Christina Granzow, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, Allison Schaaf, Katherine Young, Madison Hovis, Bailey Brandon and Danielle Gibson. KU would finish the regatta with a strong showing on the second day, wrapping up with three second-place finishes. KU headed to the Big 12 Championships with momentum on its side. The Jayhawks were able to open up the regatta with a first-place finish in the Fourth Varsity Eight, claiming victory by more than 16 seconds over Texas. In the boat for the KU were junior Kristen Byrd, sophomores Breeona Foster and Casey Kelly, freshmen Kathleen Brady, Kate Cropp, Kylee Dewey, coxswain Mallory Miller, Brittney Railsback and Emily Ruble. Kansas also posted a first-place finish in the First Varsity Four en route to a third-place finish overall in the meet, marking the third-consecutive year

KU has finished third in the Big 12 Championships. Senior Elizabeth Scherer garnered All-Big 12 First Team accolades, while senior Alexandra Torquemada and junior Claudijah Lever both earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors.

The 2015 Big 12 Championship will be hosted by Tennessee on May 17, 2015 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee joined the Big 12 Conference prior to the start of the 2014-15 season, joining existing members Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. They will compete in the Big 12 Championship at the end of the spring season. This year marks the fourth season that the Big 12 has hosted a fullysupported conference championship. Kansas won a race at the Big 12 Championship for the first time in 2012 as KU took home the First Varsity Four title. In 2013, Kansas won another with a victory in the Fourth Varsity Eight. In 2014 the Jayhawks claimed two victories, winning the First Varsity Four and Fourth Varisty Eight.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING The $8 million, 42,000-square-foot Anderson Family Strength & Conditioning Center is a split-level facility that features 20 Power Lift platforms and power racks, most recently outfitted with Elite Form 3D Camera technology which is used for measuring bar speed and calculating power output for each exercise performed in the rack. The training center houses Uesaka bumper plates and Olympic bars, along with two full sets of dumbbells to 120 lbs (5-35 in 2.5lb increments). While mostly a free-weight oriented program, Anderson also houses Keiser power equipment, eight one-of-a-kind high speed cable systems, and Hammer strength machines. In addition, a 50-yard open turf area for speed and agility development and a cardiovascular workout area are available.

THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

RESIDENCE HALLS ON DAISY HILL KU student-athletes have the opportunity to live in Ellsworth, Hashinger, Lewis, McCollum or Templin Halls, all conveniently located atop Daisy Hill. Oliver Hall is another option located next to Allen Fieldhouse. All residence halls are located near the Burge Union and Wagnon Student-Athlete Center. All rooms come standard-equipped with a bed, desk and closet. Additional amenities are available to rent.

APARTMENTS AND DORM ROOMS KU offers a variety of apartments and dorm rooms on campus. Each hall has wireless internet, is cable-ready, and has access to laundry facilities on-site. A small kitchen is provided in select residence halls. All buildings are staffed 24-hours at the front desk.

BURGE UNION Jayhawk student-athletes often dine at the Burge Union, located adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse, Wagnon Student-Athlete Center and Jayhawker Towers. The Burge Union features a wide variety of food options and also houses the training table for KU student-athletes, which serves breakfast and dinner.

Now entering his 20th season, Catloth will use last season’s success and a deep veteran team to post a strong season in 2014-15. Catloth has coached KU to numerous milestones in the program’s history. Those include an Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship, three-consecutive seasons being ranked (1999-2001) and the team’s first ever Top-20 national ranking (1999). In 2009, the Varsity Eight set a school record for 2,000 meters with a time of 6:26.2. Other milestones include victories over in-state rival Kansas State for five-consecutive years of the Kansas

Cup (1999-2003) as well as a program-record 10 first-place finishes in 2005. In 2012, the Varsity Four won the Conference USA and Big 12 Championship, marking the first time a KU boat won a race at the Big 12 Championship. In 2013-14, Catloth and the Jayhawks welcomed their local fans and four opposing teams to their own Kansas Boathouse in Lawrence for the first Jayhawk Jamboree in October 2013. More than 2,000 fans showed up in support and the rowers didn’t disappoint, with one win and eight topfive finishes in its first home event since 2005. The spring season saw the Jayhawks place third in the Big 12 for a third-consecutive year as the women were able to capture two firstplace finishes in the championship: the First Varsity Four and the Fourth Varsity Eight. The season concluded with senior Elizabeth Scherer earning All-Big 12 First Team accolades, while seniors Alexandra Torquemada and Claudijah Lever were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team. Torquemada added another accolade two weeks later by garnering All-Conference USA First Team recognition. Teammates Catherine Clements, Jessica Jacob and Scherer were given the prestigious Dr. Gerald Lage Award, handed out each year to 64 rowers across the Big 12. Clements and Scherer also earned spots on the Conference USA All-Academic Team.

The 2012-13 season saw Kansas rowing take another step toward becoming one of the elite teams in not only the Big 12 Conference, but in the C-USA as well. The Jayhawks won 31 total races as a team in 2013. KU finished third in the Big 12 and in fourth place in Conference USA; both representing an improvement from the previous year. The Jayhawks had 14 rowers earn Big 12 academic honors and six of those earned Conference USA honors. The Kansas head coach has also seen three of his rowers receive the prestigious Big 12 Prentice Gault Postgraduate Scholarship in the past five seasons and Risa Petty was named a COSIDA Academic All-American in 2000. The head coach’s success at Kansas was recognized nationally in the summer of 2000 when he was selected with former University of Pennsylvania coach, Barb Kirch, to lead the U.S. freshmen and pre-elite camp at the ARCO Olympic Training Center. Catloth and Kirch led the Nations Cup Four to a gold medal (the 23-and-under world championship) in Copenhagen, Denmark, in July 2000. Catloth, a Lawrence native, graduated from Kansas in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree. He and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Baldwin City, Kansas. Catloth’s oldest children, Grant and Olivia, both attended Kansas, while Olivia was a member of the rowing team from 2009-12. Catloth’s youngest is a fouryear-old son named Van.

Carrie Callen enters her third season as a member of the Kansas rowing coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Callen, a Kansas graduate who helped coach the University of Iowa into the top-20, was named an assistant coach for the KU women’s rowing team on June 29, 2012. The 2013-14 season saw the varsity Jayhawk rowers claim nine first place finishes. The First Varsity Four took first place in the Louisville Invite, Lake Natoma Invite, Big 12 Championship and the Sunflower Showdown. A former Kansas rower, Callen served as the graduate assistant and varsity assistant coach for the Hawkeyes’ rowing team from Aug. 2006 to June 2012.

She spent the first five years as a varsity assistant coach in which she assisted with recruiting, budgeting and coaching 15-20 second-tier athletes to compete as one of the nation’s top25. Fittingly, Callen was an Assistant Coach of the Year nominee for the 2010-11 season at Iowa.

In 2011-12, her last year with the Hawkeyes, Callen was the graduate assistant as she decided to pursue a Master of Business Administration. She completed this degree in 2014. A 2006 KU graduate with a degree in business administration, Callen was a member of the Jayhawk rowing team from 2002-04 and earned Jayhawk Scholar Student-Athlete honors during her career. She then spent two years (2004-06) as a team manager for the KU rowing team. Fresh out of college, Callen spent the summer of 2006 at the Kansas City Rowing Club where she coached “Learn-to-Row” Clinics and junior and high school camps. The Garden City, Kansas, native also spent the summer of 2010 coaching at the US Rowing Freshman Camp. Callen is the recruiting coordinator for the Jayhawks and coaches the varsity rowers with head coach Rob Catloth.

COACHES/STAFF Kelsey Arnold enters her first season as a member of the Kansas rowing coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Arnold, a graduate of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Allendale, Michigan, was named an assistant coach for the KU women’s rowing team on August 7, 2014. A walk-on rower at GVSU, she was a member of the Laker Navy powerhouse from 2007-11. She earned the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) National Championship title in the novice eight and twice in the varsity eight and made the ACRA All-American first team all three years on varsity.

COACH ARNOLD ON JOINING THE STAFF “My job is to not only teach novices the sport of rowing, I also help them transition from being a high school student-athlete to a Division 1 student-athlete. The first year of college can be quite an adjustment, and by becoming a part of the KU rowing family, that adjustment becomes much easier.”

Other highlights included a first-place finish in the Collegiate eight at the Head of the Charles in 2009, and gold in the Dad Vail novice eight and D1 varsity eight. Overseas, she competed at the Women’s Henley Regatta in the senior eight and elite eight in 2008 and 2010 in Henley, England. Arnold also rowed outside of GVSU at Vesper Boat Club in the summer of 2008 and the U-23 National Team Selection Camp in 2009.

On the coaching side, Arnold worked primarily with the novice team at Grand Valley from 2011-14. In her first season, the novice four took gold at SIRA and bronze at Dad Vail and the novice eight brought home the ACRA National Championship. In her second season, the novice eight went undefeated, claiming victories at the Occoquan Sprints, MACRA, Dad Vail and the ACRA National Championship. In her third season, the novice four took silver at Dad Vail and three novices made the All-America Freshman boat. Arnold has also coached learn-to-row and competitive programs for youth, juniors, and masters at the Grand Rapids Rowing Association, the Detroit Women’s Rowing Association and Southeast Juniors Rowing Development Camp. Arnold is thrilled to start her next coaching journey as a Jayhawk and continue to build the program under head coach Rob Catloth.

In her first season on the Kansas rowing staff, Olivia Kinet’s duties as a graduate assistant include recruiting correspondence, teaching the incoming novice the sport of rowing and general administrative duties. An innovative member of the staff, Kinet also manages the team’s social media accounts.

Debbie Van Saun joined the Kansas Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator in August 2007.

Kinet was named the graduate assistant in the summer of 2014, joining the coaching ranks at KU. Kinet was a decorated rower during her time as a Jayhawk, earning All-Big 12 and All-Conference USA First Team honors in 2012 and 2013. She capped off her senior season by being named Oarswoman of the Year. Kinet served as the volunteer student assistant helping the Novice during the 2013-14 season before accepting the graduate assistant position in June 2014. A Jayhawk graduate, Kinet finished her bachelor’s degree in general studies in 2013. As a graduate assistant, Kinet is currently working toward a master’s degree in sports management.

In July 2011, Van Saun was named Senior Associate Athletics Director. At Kansas, Van Saun directly supervises selected sports and provides administrative guidance to those coaches and their programs. Those selected sports include women’s basketball, rowing, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, swimming and diving and volleyball. In addition, Van Saun oversees Student-Athlete Development, Sports Medicine, Travel, Risk Management, and works closely with studentathletes regarding financial aid, housing, summer school, fifth-year aid and other pertinent areas. It is Van Saun’s responsibility to monitor Kansas Athletics’ efforts to comply with Title IX and NCAA gender equity principles, as well as monitor NCAA governance issues and contribute to the University’s position on new NCAA legislation. Van Saun came to KU from the City of Lawrence, where she served in numerous positions: assistant city manager, assistant utilities director, assistant finance director and collections supervisor. Her roles with the City date back to 1979 and concluded when she came to KU in 2007. Van Saun earned two degrees from KU, a Bachelor’s in Education and a Master’s in Public Administration.

Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship. And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers.

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research. As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, Gray-Little held leadership positions at the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost.

But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them – and their student-athletes – every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics.

Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley AllSports Trophy in three years. ISU also reached highs in fundraising, academics and community service during Zenger’s tenure there.

Since Zenger’s arrival at KU, those coaches and student-athletes have raised the bar with outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include:

Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in athletics administration. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, and even before he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State, he was pursuing his dream of coaching by assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations.

A National Championship for the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team, and two individual national champions. An NCAA Final Four appearance for Men’s Basketball and four more Big 12 regular-season Championships, raising that streak of titles to 10. Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances for Women’s Basketball. Two NCAA Sweet 16 (and three-straight NCAA appearances) for Volleyball. NCAA appearances for Baseball, Soccer, Softball and Women’s Golf. A National Coach-of-the-Year award (Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field) and several Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards – Bill Self, men’s basketball (twice), Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field (twice), Ray Bechard, volleyball (twice), and Clark Campbell, swimming.

In fact, during the 2013-14 academic year, 11 KU teams reached postseason play, the most KU appearances in one year in more than a decade. Zenger has spearheaded a tremendous upgrade in Kansas Athletics’ facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Most notable among these is the completion of Rock Chalk Park, which contains new, state-of-the-art stadiums for KU’s Track & Field, Soccer and Softball programs. Memorial Stadium has received a facelift as well. In summer 2014 the track surrounding the football field was removed, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. In addition, construction is underway on the DeBruce Center, the permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball,” adjacent to historic Allen Fieldhouse. Finally, construction has begun on McCarthy Hall, which will house the men’s basketball team and an equal number of distinguished non-student-athletes.

It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He came to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. He joined the football staff at the University of South Florida and then at the University of Wyoming before returning to Kansas State, eventually serving as KSU’s associate athletics director for development. He held that position until becoming Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005. Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.
