2014 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

2014 PREVIEW

PAIR OF SENIORS READY TO LEAD JAYHAWK MEN TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS The University of Kansas men’s cross country team again saw another strong season in 2013 which culminated in a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional, the squad’s best finish in over six years. The 2014 squad returns the majority of that regional team and adds several talented newcomers looking to continue Kansas cross country’s rise back to national prominence. Even with the loss of All-Region performers Josh Munsch and Reid Buchanan, the Jayhawks return the majority of the athletes who were a part of their Big 12 and NCAA Regional teams in 2013, including seniors James Wilson and Evan Landes. Both Jayhawks have been integral parts of KU’s lead pack for the past three seasons and don’t expect that to change this year. A trio of sophomores will be expected to be strong contributors for the Jayhawks this year in Tyler Yunk, Alexandre Lavigne and Daniel Koech. Yunk was a winner in his first collegiate race last season at the Bob Timmons Classic and finished inside KU’s top five in each race he competed in. Lavinge and Koech took enormous strides throughout their debut seasons as well, putting themselves in position to help the team to a high conference and regional finish. A handful of transfers will be welcomed to the team this season. Juniors Brandon Bernal and Jacob Morgan will bring a wealth of experience to a relatively young KU men’s team. Morgan was a two-time competitor at the Mountain West Championships for Colorado State while Bernal was a top runner at last season at the junior college level. The Kansas coaches signed five highly regarded freshmen for 2014, most of whom are expected to contribute immediately. Juan del Azar comes to Lawrence via Virginia Water, England and has already amassed an impressive resume with a high finish at the English National Championships and numerous school records on the track. Manahattan, Kansas native Chris Melgares was a key part of Manhattan High School’s four league titles and 2014 regional championship. He also added a pair of state titles on the track during his final season in Manhattan. Carson Vickroy, who hails from Chappelle, Texas, earned spots on three All-District teams during his high school campaign. Adel Yoonis rounds out the freshman class but has already seen time in the Crimson & Blue after spending 2014 on the Kansas track team, showing great potential as a middle distance specialist.

WOMEN’S SQUAD LOOKING TO CARRY MOMENTUM FROM STRONG END TO 2013 The Kansas women’s team will enter the 2014 season with elevated expectations after an impressive finale to 2013. The team returns all but one of the runners that picked up the program’s highest regional finish in a decade. This year’s team features the rare blend of youth and experience as eight of the 17 runners on the roster are underclassmen but have suited up for the Jayhawks in two or more meets. The Jayhawks see the return of junior Hannah Richardson, who is coming off a sophomore season in which she earned All-Big 12 and AllRegion accolades. Unlike 2013, Richardson will enter this season with experience as the Jayhawks’ No. 1 runner as she led her squad in all four meets last season. Nashia and Malika Baker were arguably two of the Jayhawks’ two most improved runners as freshmen in 2013 and continued that progress thoughout the track season. Both finished inside the top-four of the Jayhawk pack in all but one meet last year and the Baker twins are sure to bring that consistent pressence to this season’s team. Sophomores Courtney Coppinger and Rachel Simon were were also consistently near the top of the KU pack during their first season in Lawrence, with both earning spots on the Jayhawk team that competed at the Big 12 and Midwest Regional Championships. The duo will give its team a couple more young and talented runners to help push the Jayhawk squad to higher finishes. The women will also see the addition of redshirt freshmen Grace Morgan and Lydia Saggau, who both posted impressive debut performances in the season opener last fall before being sidelined for the rest of the year with injuries. Both runners are more than capable to slide up among the top of the KU pack and make the Jayhawks one of the deepest squads in the Big 12. The coaches have again brought in a solid group of newcomers, headlined by Sarah Kelly. The Scotland native brings in a wealth of experience running on the international stage as she has notched high finishes at the IAAF World Junior Championships and a host of other European meets. Kansas natives Mary Kate Franklin and Alaina Schroeder round out the newcomer class. Franklin was a state champion as a member of the Hayden Catholic High title-winning squad in 2014 and picked up an individual state title on the track in the 1,600 meters last year. Schroeder also garnered impressive accolades at the high school level as she was a member of the league and regional champion Manhattan High team from 2011-13.

2014 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

Michael Whittlesey is in his sixth season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas. In his time in Lawrence, Whittlesey has made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his five seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided three Jayhawks to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships: Lauren Bonds, which was a first for a KU woman since the 1994 season, as well as Donny Wasinger in 2010 and Reid Buchanan in 2013. Additionally, in 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Whittlesey has mentored nine Jayhawks to All-America honors on the track and has seen four of his athletes break school records (Lauren Bonds - indoor mile, indoor 3,000m, outdoor 1,500m, outdoor 5,000m; Amanda Miller - indoor 5,000m, Rebeka Stowe indoor 3,000m, 3,000m Steeplechase and Natalie Becker - indoor 3,000m, outdoor 5,000m). Whittlesey’s most decorated Jayhawk, Stowe, was the 2012 Big 12 Champion in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and broke the school record in the event on numerous

occasions. She earned First Team All-America honors at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships with her top-12 finishes in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Stowe was also a two-time All-Big 12 honoree on the cross country course. Whittlesey mentored Bonds to an outstanding 2010 senior season as she claimed the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 1,500 meters and went on to earn All-America honors by taking seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. En route to earning All-America status honors, Bonds set a new KU record in the event with her time of 4:14.29. Bonds also had a fine year off the track as she was named an Academic All-American and was a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year. The 2010 cross country season featured junior Donny Wasinger advancing as an individual to the national championship meet. Both Kansas cross country teams finished seventh at the 2010 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties at UNC, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track & field and cross country for his last four seasons at UNC.

Times named the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year at North Carolina

Under his direction, North Carolina middle distance/ distance produced nine NCAA champions in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Whittlesey led the track team to back-to-back NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career. After assisting the Tar Heels to a fourth-place indoor finish and another top-10 outdoor finish and producing four NCAA individual and relay titles, Whittlesey was awarded the first-ever NCAA Division I Track and Field National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s middle distance/distance in 2003. Whittlesey also received the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor. Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A three-time recipient of the NCAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3,000 meters and then teamed up with Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take firstplace honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Whittlesey also coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track & field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track and Field World Championship team, while Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track. Whittlesey twice won both the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year and Southeast Region Coach of the Year awards, earning each in 1999 and 2003. A native of Morris, Connecticut, Whittlesey started his coaching career at UConn as a graduate assistant, where he assisted with distance and was a pole vault and multievent coach. He then served two years at UNC-Charlotte where he worked as an assistant coach. While with the 49ers, Whittlesey led his athletes to 53 new school records in 18 different events and coached all-conference performers in the triple jump and javelin. Whittlesey’s competitive experience includes being the first American finisher in the 1995 Boston Marathon. He also qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials in the marathon after competing as a non-recruited athlete at the University of Connecticut. He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master’s in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UConn. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: 10-year-old daughter Samantha and eight-year-old son Ryan.

MEN’S 2013 RESULTS

MEET 1: BOB TIMMONS CLASSIC Rim Rock Farm | 6K | Aug. 31, 20123| Lawrence, Kan. Freshman Tyler Yunk began his Kansas cross country career with a victory as he helped the KU men defeat Oral Roberts and UMKC in the dual meet Aug. 31 at Rim Rock Farm. With the KU men looking to open their season with a team victory for the 11th-straight season, it was up to a group of underclassmen to keep the impressive streak going. Of the nine Jayhawks to suit up in the Crimson and Blue Saturday, six did so for the first time.

TEAM FINISH - 1ST INDIV. FINISHERS (OUT OF 60) TIME 1. Tyler Yunk . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19:34.19 3. Alexandre Lavigne . . . . . . . . . 19:39.88 7. From the starting gun the Jayhawks asserted their dominance, with the Kansas runners forming their pack in the overall lead through the first two kilometers. As the field began to spread out, Yunk and fellow freshman Alexandre Lavigne separated from their teammates and put themselves into a comfortable lead at the 4K marker.

Yunk managed to hold a slight edge over his new teammate over the final quarter of the race, giving himself just enough separation to have a comfortable lead coming down the home stretch. The frosh crossed the finish and earned the victory in his first race at the collegiate level. The Belvidere, Illinois, native traversed the 6K course in 19:34.19 to outpace Oral Roberts’ David Batchelder by over four seconds. Lavigne held on for a third-place finish with his 6K time of 19:39.88. Junior Brendan Soucie was the next Jayhawk to cross the finish as he posted a seventh-place finish with a time of 20:01.21, his fastest career 6K in and best ever finish at the Bob Timmons. Redshirt freshman Brendon Messerly claimed an 11th-place finish with his time of 20:15.14 and was the Jayhawks’ fourth finisher in his first race in the Kansas uniform. Rounding out the KU men’s top seven finishers were junior Eric Lightfoot (20:31.81) in 15th, junior Conner Day (21:07.03) in 23rd and redshirt freshman Ben Brownlee (21:15.93) who posted a 26th-place finish. Kansas defeated both Oral Roberts and UMKC in the double-dual scored meet. The Jayhawks took down the Golden Eagles 22-34 and defeated the Kangaroos 23-32.

Senior Josh Munsch ran to his first collegiate victory and helped lead the University of Kansas men’s cross country team to its second win of the 2013 season Oct. 5 at the Rim Rock Classic. The KU men saw five runners finish inside the top-10 to tally 19 points in the meet held at Kansas’ home course, Rim Rock Farm. The men’s race featured several highly-touted teams as the KU men were pitted against Rice, New Mexico State, UMKC and rival Kansas State amongst others. The 8K race was led from start to finish by a group of KU runners followed by handful from Rice. The KU group increased its lead over the final mile to end all doubts of its second team win of the young season.

The men’s race featured over 300 runners and many of the top-ranked teams in the nation at the meet that was hosted at the site of the NCAA Championships in November. Buchanan, who hails from Manhattan, Kansas, was the top finisher on the men’s side for the first time on the season. The junior was joined by junior Evan Landes and senior Josh Munsch for the majority of the 8K race before a strong closing kick earned Buchanan the highest KU finish. Buchanan clocked in at 24:05.84 to finish 37th overall but was followed closely by Landes, who finished seven seconds later at 24:12.66 to place 50th. Munsch was the third KU finisher, crossing the finish line in 64th place with a time of 24:20.26. The trio made Kansas one of only eight teams to see at least three runners place in the top-64 of the overall standings.

The first half of the race the Jayhawks saw a solid four-man group sticking with the lead pack. At the halfway point of the race the field began to thin out with Munsch, Landes and junior Reid Buchanan pacing the way for the KU men. As the runners hit the final 1,000 meters it was Munsch and Landes who separated themselves with some strong closing kicks down the home stretch.

Munsch, who hails from Hays, Kansas, posted his best conference finish as a Jayhawk when he crossed the finish in 13th-place, posting an 8K personal best of 23:36.8. The senior’s finish was the highest by a Jayhawk since Donny Wasinger also notched a 13th-place finish at the league meet in 2010. The Mulvane, Kansas, native Landes was not far behind as he finished less than four seconds later at 23:40.5 to earn himself a 15th-place finish. The final placement was two spots better than finish of 17th at last year’s Championships and earned him All-Conference honors for the first time. With Munsch’s and Landes’ finishes, the KU men saw two runners named to the All-Big 12 team for the first time since 2006.

For the first time in six seasons the Kansas men’s cross country team posted a top-five finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships as the Jayhawks competed Nov. 15 at the Iowa State Cross Country Course. Junior Reid Buchanan earned an automatic bid to Nationals with his 12th-place finish and will be the first Jayhawk since 2010 to compete at the NCAA Championships.

The KU men entered the event ranked ninth among the members of the Midwest Region in the most recent regional rankings, however proved that poll wrong with a stellar performance in Friday afternoon’s 10K race. As was the case all season, the Jayhawks’ top four runners of Buchanan, senior Josh Munsch and juniors James Wilson and Evan Landes quickly separated themselves through the first 1,000 meters. The trek became a bit more difficult for Buchanan though after his shoe fell off within the first four minutes of the race. Forced to run the remainder of the six-mile competition without his right shoe, Buchanan continued to run alongside his teammates who had remained less than a second from the leaders after the first 5,000 meters. The Manhattan, Kan., product began to put some space between he and his fellow Jayhawks at the 8K marker and used a strong kick in the closing chute to post the highest finish by a KU runner in three seasons. Buchanan completed the 10K course in a personal-best time of 30:43.3 to finish 12th overall. His place made him the fourth finisher not a member of an auto-qualifying team, meaning he claimed the final individual automatic spot at the NCAA Championships.

Buchanan managed to turn in a top-25 finish for the second-consecutive season, as the Manhattan, Kansas, product traversed the 8K Cottonwood Creek course in 23:48.7 to place 22nd overall. The race also marked the fastest 8K of his career.

Buchanan wasn’t the only Jayhawk to turn in a career outing as Landes and Munsch also tallied top-25 finishes. Landes crossed the finish in 30:51.6 to place 17th overall, while Munsch came in less than a second later (30:52.5) to take 19th. Their finishes marked the first time since 2006 a men’s team saw three claim top-25 finishes at the Regional meet. The KU trio’s finishes also earned each All-Region honors for the first time in their careers.

Rounding out the men’s top-seven finishers were junior James Wilson (24:20.9) who finished 35th, freshman Tyler Yunk (24:45.4) who placed 46th, freshman Daniel Koech (25:17.8) who took 52nd and junior Brendan Soucie (25:22.0), notching a 53rd-place finish.

Junior James Wilson missed a spot in the top-25 by less than two seconds. The Abilene, Kansas, native finished 27th overall with a 10k time of 31:06.0. Rounding out the Jayhawks’ top-five was freshman Tyler Yunk, who traversed the course in 32:10.0 to finish 82nd.

TEAM FINISHES

The men placed fifth overall after amassing 157 points and were just one point away from tying fourth-place Oklahoma. The finish was KU’s best since the 2006 squad took second at the regional meet.

MEET 6: NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS LaVern Gibson Championship Course | 10K | Nov. 23, 2013 | Terre Haute, Ind. Kansas junior Reid Buchanan concluded his 2013 cross country campaign with a 142nd-place at the NCAA Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course. Buchanan completed the 10K course in 31:44.0 and earned the best finish by a Jayhawk at the national race in seven years. With a wind chill in the low 20’s and a rain soaked coarse to deal with, Buchanan set out in his first career NCAA Championship race in hopes of becoming the 27th All-American in Kansas cross country history. It was no easy task though, with over 250 of the top collegiate distance runners in the U.S. filling the starting blocks alongside him. Over the first 3,000 meters, the enormous pack of runners made it difficult for the Manhattan, Kan., native to work his way up toward the leaders. He posted a 3K split of 8:47 and stood in 156th with two of the six miles under his belt. As the field spread out through the next 2,000 meters Buchanan made a huge jump in the standings, moving up almost 50 spots and checking in at the halfway mark in 109th with 15:23.8 away on the race clock. His placement slipped though over the next two miles and he saw himself sitting in 147th has he headed into the final 2,000 meters. As he had done all year, Buchanan again ended his race strong and posted a final 2K split of 6:33.7 to move ahead of a handful of runners down the closing stretch and cross the finish among the top-150 finishers. Buchanan posted a final time of 31:44.0 to finish 142nd overall and, while he missed earning All-American accolades by just under a minute, his place marked the best finish by a Jayhawk at the NCAA Championships in seven years.

Seven of the 11 Jayhawks which the Kansas coaches sent to the start line were seeing action in their first collegiate race, but it was those young runners that turned some heads in the 5K race.

The competition for the individual victory was decided within the first kilometer with Oral Roberts’ Samantha Watson breaking out to a huge lead during the early portions of the race. Several Jayhawks led the Kansas women’s pack in those early stages but it was two that took the reins and staked their spots in second and third for the majority of the race. True freshmen Jennifer Angles and Grace Morgan moved up the field and even made up some ground on the leader, Watson, over the final half of the race. Angles was able to save just enough in the tank over the final kilometer to keep the edge over her teammate, Morgan. The Overland Park, Kansas, native clocked in with a 5K time of 19:16.53 to take the runner-up spot behind Watson’s winning time of 18:34.88. The Lawrence native, Morgan, tallied the bronze medal finish with her time of 19:17.38. Another true freshman, Lydia Saggau, was the next runner to come across the finish as she completed her 5K loop in 19:29.92. The freshman theme did not end there with the Kansas women as Nashia Baker, Julia Dury, Courtney Coppinger and Malika Baker rounded out the team’s top seven, all KU freshmen who posted overall finishes within the top-13. Nashia Baker finished sixth in 19:32.94, Dury took ninth in 19:45.52, Coppinger was 10th in 19:48.30 and Malika Baker talled a 13th-place finish in 19:57.42. The race marked the first time in the Stanley Redwine era that the women’s team’s top-seven finishers were all freshmen. The Kansas women outpaced both Oral Roberts and UMKC in the double-dual standings with KU upending ORU 20-43 and outscoring UMKC 17-43.

The Glendale, Missouri, native finished her 6K in 20:41.3, her fastest at that distance, which was good to give her an 11th-place finish. Her performance was enough to make her an All-Region selection and gave her a chance to claim an at-large individual bid to next week’s national meet. Senior Natalie Becker concluded her KU cross country career with her fastest 6K as a Jayhawk, which nearly notched her a top-25 placement. Becker’s time of 21:12.4 put her at 27th, two seconds off from 25th place. It was three freshmen that then completed KU’s top-five finishers. Malika and Nashia Baker again turned in outstanding performances as Malika took 46th with her 6K time of 21:34.1, with Nashia not far behind at 50th in 21:38.8. The twins’ finishes marked the first time since 2003 the Jayhawk women saw four finish inside the top-50 at the regional race. Freshman Courtney Coppinger was the final Jayhawk to score as she finished 84th overall after posting a time of 21:56.6. The race marked one of the most successful meets collectively for the men’s and women’s cross country teams. KU saw both squads finish in the top-five of their respective regions for just the second time since 2000.

2014 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932.

When ranking Kansas runners in the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since Brent Steiner took seventh in 1984. His finish at the NCAA meet in 2004 earned him All-America honors, the first KU male to do so in 20 years.

A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his secondplace performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the threemile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

1948-1965

His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

1958-61

1963-66

JOHN LAWSON

1952-55

AL FRAME A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resumé.

As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status.

In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won threestraight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University.

BILLY MILLS

runner all but one year of his Kansas career. In 2005 he helped the men’s team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Jayhawks’ best result at nationals since 1989.

During his four years in Lawrence, Chesang was a three-time all-conference and all-region selection and was the team’s top

Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005).

Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 193234, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A twotime Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Gold medalist. All-American. Hallof-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in

1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

JIM RYUN

HISTORY

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A threetime Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games.

Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Saul’s track career was just has decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She held the school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters for 20 years and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected eight conference championships: four indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards).

1968-88

1952-55

A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships.

BOB TIMMONS

Arguably the greatest female runner Kansas cross country has ever seen, Julia Saul was the catalyst that began the rise of the women’s program. After the Lawrence native transferred to KU from Oregon following the 1990 season, she put together a list of accolades that no other woman in the Crimson and Blue has been able to match. To this day she is the only female cross country All-American in Kansas history, earning the honor with her 18th-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Championships. A three-time All-Big Eight and All-District V selection, she collected a total of six individual titles throughout her career, including the 1991 District V title. Saul became just the fifth Jayhawk in the history of both the men’s and women’s programs to run in three NCAA Championship meets, finishing 32nd, 16th and 65th in the three races.

Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500

JULIA SAUL

During his tenure at KU from 196669, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3 stood for nearly 30 years.

A Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kansas, native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming backto-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953).

Bob Timmons is to Kansas cross country what Phog Allen is to Kansas basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk cross country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one

of the best and toughest cross country courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

2014 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR Since arriving at the University of Kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gray-Little has advanced KU’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities, and making discoveries that change the world. Through the Bold Aspirations strategic plan, KU is changing the way it prepares students for success. It’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world. Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the University of Kansas. These new standards take effect in 2016 and will give students and families a more accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university.

Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship. And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers.

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research. As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, Gray-Little held leadership positions at the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost.

ADMINISTRATION

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kansas, native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them – and their student-athletes – every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Since Zenger’s arrival at KU, those coaches and student-athletes have raised the bar with outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include: •

A National Coach-of-the-Year award (Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field) and several Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards – Bill Self, men’s basketball (twice), Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field (twice), Ray Bechard, volleyball (twice), and Clark Campbell, swimming.

In fact, during the 2013-14 academic year, 11 KU teams reached postseason play, the most KU appearances in one year in more than a decade. Zenger has spearheaded a tremendous upgrade in Kansas Athletics’ facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Most notable among these is the completion of Rock Chalk Park, which contains new, state-of-the-art stadiums for KU’s Track & Field, Soccer and Softball programs. Memorial Stadium is receiving a facelift as well. Work began in June 2014 to remove the track and surround the football field with new artificial turf, bringing it to within 10 feet of the stands. In addition, planning is underway for the DeBruce Center, the permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball,” adjacent to historic Allen Fieldhouse. Finally, another positive stride, fundraising continues for the Fieldhouse Apartments, which will house the men’s basketball team and an equal

number of distinguished non-student-athletes. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley AllSports Trophy in three years. ISU also reached highs in fundraising, academics and community service during Zenger’s tenure there. Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in athletics administration. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, and even before he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State, he was pursuing his dream of coaching by assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He came to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. He joined the football staff at the University of South Florida and then at the University of Wyoming before returning to Kansas State, eventually serving as KSU’s associate athletics director for development. He held that position until becoming Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005. Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.

2014 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

COMPLIANCE 101: UNDERSTANDING THE “RULES OF THE GAME” With the continued success of Kansas Athletics, the Athletic Compliance Office wants you to understand how you can help KU coaches and student-athletes. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA legislation. Specifically, the NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for: • •

Controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Monitoring its program to ensure compliance with identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action. Ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA rules.

Under NCAA rules, KU is responsible for all actions of its boosters. Therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity. Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets. In addition, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated NCAA rules and regulations from the institution. COMPLIANCE TERMINOLOGY BOOSTERS. You are a representative of KU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions: • • • • • •

You are a member of any organization that promotes KU’s athletics program (e.g., Williams Education Fund); You have made a financial contribution to the KU athletics department or its booster organization; You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for KU; You have provided benefits (e.g., summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled student-athletes; You are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled student-athlete; or You have, in any way, promoted the athletics program at KU.

Remember: Once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely. Even if you are not a booster as defined by the NCAA, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of NCAA rules. Something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a NCAA violation. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits. PROSPECTS. A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student

for recruiting purposes or provides the student (or the student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students. In addition, studentathletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective student-athletes. Remember: A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement to attend KU. The prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first. After classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete. CONTACT. A “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. However, any such face-toface encounter on the KU campus or during a KU event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, twoyear college or all-star team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs. TELEPHONE/ELECTRONIC CORRESPONDENCE CONTACT. The restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited. Electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i.e. snapchat), email, any social media methods (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), chat rooms and instant message. Telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as Skype and Facetime.

EMPLOYMENT. It is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent. However, no contact may be made without approval from the Athletic Compliance Office. In addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school. If the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college. EXTRA BENEFITS. It is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise. A representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide ANYTHING to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed National Letter of Intent or a Financial Aid Agreement. STUDENT-ATHLETE. A student-athlete is any University of Kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team. EXTRA BENEFITS. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. It is a violation of the NCAA rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete. OCCASIONAL MEAL. You may provide a student-athlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home. This meal can be catered and you may provide the studentathletes with transportation to attend the meal. All occasional meals must be pre-approved by the Athletic Compliance Office.

RECRUITING. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited.

Together, the University of Kansas and YOU will make this program a success. These reminders will help guide you and ensure that Kansas Athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the NCAA as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence. If in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited.

It is not permissible for any member of Kansas Athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment. A student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the University of Kansas.

FOR SPECIFIC NCAA RULE INTERPRETATIONS, PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC COMPLIANCE OFFICE:

If you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend KU, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach. Contacting a KU coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate.
