2013 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

2013 PREVIEW

STRONG CORE RETURNS FOR JAYHAWK MEN WITH NCAA ASPIRATIONS The University of Kansas men’s cross country team enjoyed one of its most successful years of the past decade in 2012, with a high finish in what is considered one of the most competitive conferences in the nation and a ranking in the top-25 for the first time in nearly six years. The good news for the 2013 team, almost all the pieces that led to the breakthrough season a year ago are back in the crimson and blue. Even with the loss of All-Region performers Donny Wasinger and Gabe Gonzalez, the Jayhawks return the majority of the athletes who were apart of their Big 12 and NCAA Regional squads in 2012, including juniors James Wilson, Evan Landes and Reid Buchanan. KU featured a different top finisher in every race of the season last year and don’t expect that depth to waiver anytime soon. Senior Josh Munsch enters his final campaign as a Jayhawk and will look to maintain his study climb to the top of the KU pack. The Hays, Kan. native has been apart of the Jayhawks’ Big 12 and Regional Championship squads each of the last two seasons and has steadily improved to become one of the top 1,500-meter runners in the KU track program’s history. This season he expects to be among KU’s top finishers and give the Jayhawks the all important depth it needs to be a true contender at the conference and regional levels. The junior class of Wilson, Landes and Buchanan may be one of the most underrated in the Big 12 and the Jayhawks add a pair of newcomers in Eric Lightfoot and Brent Collins having already notched valuable experience as collegians. Collins was an all-conference performer at Southeast Missouri State while Lightfoot was a member of the Southwestern College’s NAIA Championship qualifying team. The two transfers as well as Brendan Soucie are ready to contribute as part of this star-studded group of juniors. After redshirting as freshman several Jayhawks are ready to make their mark on the historical KU cross country program. Ben Brownlee and Brandon Messerly were forced to watch from the sidelines a year ago and have been eager to get out on the trails to show what they can do. Even with the experienced letterwinners returning, the Kansas coaches are excited to welcome in a young but talented group to Lawrence this season. Runners who have already been tested at the national level such as Tyler Yunk, Alexandre Lavigne and Eric Lightfoot will add a valuable component to this year’s squad. In addition to Lavigne, who hails from Quebec, Canada, KU adds another international in Daniel Koech, who comes to Lawrence from Eldoret, Kenya. The Jayhawks have had success with Kenya natives in the past with Benson Chesang claiming back-to-back individual Big 12 titles in 2003 and 2004.

YOUNG WOMEN’S TEAM LOOKING TO SUPRISE IN 2013 With nine true freshmen, five redshirt freshmen and only two upperclassmen comprising this year’s 20-woman roster, it’s safe to say the 2013 addition of KU women’s cross country has a youthful look to it. Only two of those who ran for the Jayhawks at last year’s NCAA regional return for this season, leaving plenty of spots to fill for coaches Redwine and Whittlesey, however a strong incoming recruiting class may ease those as well as an eager group of sophomores looking to carry on the momentum started by the KU women’s national championship in outdoor track & field last season. The top returner for KU this season is undoubtedly sophomore Hannah Richardson, who was one of the Jayhawks’ top-three finishers in every race in which she competed during her debut season with the team. Though only in her second year, she will surely be called upon to lead the young women’s pack this season. The lone senior in the 2013 roster is Natalie Becker, who is primed for a breakthrough season. As a freshman in 2010, the St. Louis native was KU’s No. 2 runner in every competition, however a strain of injuries has impeded on Becker’s progress over the last two seasons. Now with a clean bill of health over the last year, she is ready to recapture the cross country prowess that took her to the top of the KU pack three years ago. A pair of sophomores, Hayley Francis and Sara Seiwald showed measured improvements over their redshirt-freshman seasons in 2012 and are hoping to be staples in the Jayhawks top group of runners this year. Francis was a member of KU’s Big 12 Championship team a year ago and don’t be surprised of she continues to climb up the depth chart of the women’s team. One of the largest freshman classes in recent memory makes up over half of this season’s roster and while the first-year’s may lack experience at the collegiate level, several have tallied some impressive accomplishments during their high school careers. Lawrence native Grace Morgan was a four-time qualifier for the Kansas state cross country meet and was named the High School Runner of the Year by the Lawrence Journal World her senior year. KU also adds twins Malika and Nashia Baker, both of whom led their Lansing High School team to a bronze medal finish at the 2012 Kansas State Cross Country Championships. Frosh Alexis Messerly also signs on with Jayhawks after an impressive senior season, having helped her team to a state title last year. KU brings in three other out-of-state newcomers in Lydia Saggau, Rachael Simon and Hannah Dimmick. Saggau was a member of the Iowa Cross Country Elite All-State Team as a junior while Simon is a three-time all-conference performer from Barrington, Ill. Dimmick was named to her all-district squad as a junior in McLean, Va. and holds her school’s record in the 5k with a time of 19:08. Rounding out the freshman class are Kansas natives Courtney Coppinger and Jennifer Angles, both with experience at the state championship level.

PHOG ALLEN

THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

2.

THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

3.

CAMPANILE HILL Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

4.

THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

5.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

6.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

2013 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

Michael Whittlesey is in his fifth season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas. In his short time in Lawrence, Whittlesey has already made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his four seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided two Jayhawks to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships: Lauren Bonds, which was a first for a KU woman since the 1994 season, and Donny Wasinger, who was the first KU man to do so since 2007. Additionally, in 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Whittlesey has mentored nine Jayhawks to All-America honors on the track and has seen three of his athletes break school records (Lauren Bonds - indoor mile, indoor 3,000m, outdoor 1,500m, outdoor 5,000m; Amanda Miller - indoor 5,000m and Rebeka Stowe indoor 3,000m, 3,000m Steeplechase). Whittlesey’s most decorated Jayhawk, Stowe, was the 2012 Big 12 Champion in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and also broke the school record in the event on numerous occasions. She also earned First

Team All-America honors at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships with her top-12 finishes in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Stowe was also a two-time All-Big 12 honoree on the cross country course. Whittlesey mentored Bonds to an outstanding 2010 senior season as she claimed the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 1,500 meters and went on to earn All-America honors by taking seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. En route to earning All-America honors, Bonds set a new KU record in the event with her time of 4:14.29. Bonds also had a fine year off the track as she was named an Academic All-American and was a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year. The 2010 cross country season featured junior Donny Wasinger advancing as an individual to the national championship meet. Both Kansas cross country teams finished seventh at the 2010 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties at UNC, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track and field and cross country for his last four seasons at UNC.

Under his direction, North Carolina middle distance/ distance produced nine NCAA champions in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Whittlesey led the track team to back-to-back NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career. After assisting the Tar Heels to a fourth-place indoor finish and another top-10 outdoor finish and producing four NCAA individual and relay titles, Whittlesey was awarded the first-ever NCAA Division I Track and Field National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s middle distance/distance in 2003. Whittlesey also received the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor. Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A three-time recipient of the NCAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3,000 meters and then teamed up with teammates Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take first-place honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Whittlesey also coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track and field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track and Field World Championship team, while Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track. Whittlesey twice won both the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year and Southeast Region Coach of the Year awards, earning each in 1999 and 2003. A native of Morris, Conn., Whittlesey started his coaching career at UConn as a graduate assistant. While at UConn he assisted with distance and was a pole vault and multievent coach. He then served two years at UNC-Charlotte where he worked as an assistant coach. While with the 49ers, Whittlesey led his athletes to 53 new school records in 18 different events and coached all-conference performers in the triple jump and javelin. Whittlesey’s competitive experience includes being the first American finisher in the 1995 Boston Marathon. He also qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials in the marathon after competing as a non-recruited athlete at the University of Connecticut. He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master’s in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UConn. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: nineyear-old daughter Samantha and six-year-old son Ryan.

The University of Kansas men’s cross country team opened the 2012 campaign strong as they claimed victory at the Bob Timmons Classic at a rain-soaked Rim Rock Farm on Saturday, Sept. 1. KU senior Josh Baden claimed the individual victory in the men’s race with his fellow Jayhawks making up seven of the top-10 finishing positions. The men’s team dominated the 6K race, finishing in the top-four overall spots and placing all but one of its 13 participants in the top-25. The Jayhawks amassed 16 points to earn their 10th-straight team title at the season-opening meet. Baden’s victory marked the first of his career, as the Colby, Kan., native finished in a time of 19:49.0. The men’s pack remained tight from start to finish with the next three Jayhawk finishers less than a second behind the winner, Baden. Sophomore Reid Buchanan took second at 19:49.3, redshirt sophomore James Wilson traversed the 6K course in 19:49.5 to place third and redshirt freshman Gabe Gonzalez claimed fourth in 19:49.5.

With the winds howling around the MSU Cross Country Course the KU men took to the starting blocks in Springfield looking to improve upon their 8th-place finish 2011 and earn their first bid to the NCAA Championships since 2006. It was a tall order though, as the Jayhawks were competing in one of the most competitive regions in the nation as the Midwest featured four nationally-ranked teams.

From the gun the men’s 10K race began at a pedestrian pace. With as many as 50 runners making up the lead pack through the first half of the race, no team was able to earn a noticeable edge. Senior Donny Wasinger, sophomores James Wilson and Reid Buchanan and Gonzalez comprised the KU continent fighting for position in the lead group for the first hlaf of the race. In the final 2K runners from several teams began to make their moves, allowing the race to quicken and the competitors to spread out. Gonzalez held out the longest and used a strong kick in the final 400 meters to move ahead of his teammates and claim KU’s No. 1 spot. For the sixth time in as many meets, a new member of the men’s squad was KU’s top finisher. Gonzalez, a redshirt freshman out of Springdale, Ark., came to the finish in 30:58.76 to finish 24th and collect USTFCCCA All-Region honors, the first Jayhawk to do so since 2010. Wasinger finished 15 seconds later when he posted a time of 31:13.58, good enough for a 35th-place finish. The Winona, Minn., native has now been among the team’s top-two finishers in each race he has competed in this season. Buchanan and Wilson were next to cross the line for the Jayhawks, with Buchanan collecting a 40th-place finish in a time of 31:16.43 and Wilson finishing 44th, clocking in at 31:28.10. Senior Josh Baden rounded out the team scoring with his 51st-place finish. The Colby, Kan., native traversed the 10K course in 31:35.26. The men’s team amassed a score of 194 points to finish sixth in the team standings, their lowest point total at the Regional race in six years. The top-five Kansas finishers had a gap of just 37 seconds between their first and fifth finishers, the closest gap for the KU men’s pack this season.

2013 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932.

When ranking Kansas runners in the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since Brent Steiner took seventh in 1984. His finish at the NCAA meet in 2004 earned him All-American honors, the first KU male to do so in 20 years.

A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his secondplace performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the threemile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

1948-1965

His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

1958-61

1963-66

JOHN LAWSON

1952-55

AL FRAME A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resumé.

As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status.

In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won threestraight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University.

BILLY MILLS

runner all but one year of his Kansas career. In 2005 he helped the men’s team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Jayhawks’ best result at nationals since 1989.

During his four years in Lawrence, Chesang was a three-time All-conference and all-region selection and was the team’s top

Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005).

Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 193234, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A twotime Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

KU CROSS COUNTRY LEGENDS

Gold medalist. All-American. Hallof-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in

1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

HISTORY

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A threetime Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games.

Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Saul’s track career was just has decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She still holds the school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected eight conference championships: four indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards).

1968-88

1952-55

A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships.

BOB TIMMONS

Arguably the greatest female runner Kansas cross country has ever seen, Julia Saul was the catalyst that began the rise of the women’s program. After the Lawrence native transferred to KU from Oregon following the 1990 season, she put together a list of accolades that no other woman in the Crimson and Blue has been able to match. To this day she is the only female cross country All-American in Kansas history, earning the honor with her 18th-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Championships. A three-time All-Big Eight and All-District V selection, she collected a total of six individual titles throughout her career, including the 1991 District V title. Saul became just the fifth Jayhawk in the history of both the men’s and women’s programs to run in three NCAA Championship meets, finishing 32nd, 16th and 65th in the three races.

Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9;

JULIA SAUL

During his tenure at KU from 196669, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today .

A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan., native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-to-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953).

Bob Timmons is to Kansas cross country what Phog Allen is to Kansas basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk cross country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one

of the best and toughest cross country courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

2013 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR Since arriving at the University of Kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gray-Little has advanced KU’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities, and making discoveries that change the world. Through the Bold Aspirations strategic plan, KU is changing the way it prepares students for success. It’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world. Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the University of Kansas. These new standards take effect in 2016 and will give students and families a more accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university.

Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship. And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers.

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research. As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, Gray-Little held leadership positions at the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost.

ADMINISTRATION

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and studentathletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics.

While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine.

Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conferenceleading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years.

Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career.

At the beginning, Zenger wasn’t headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didn’t take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation.

Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State.

In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest fulltime football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success.

A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association.

It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels.

He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.

2013 KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY

COMPLIANCE 101: UNDERSTANDING THE “RULES OF THE GAME” With the continued success of Kansas Athletics, the Athletic Compliance Office wants you to understand how you can help KU coaches and student-athletes. Institutional control of athletics is a fundamental requirement of NCAA legislation. Specifically, the NCAA constitution provides that each institution shall be responsible for: • •

Controlling its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. Monitoring its program to ensure compliance with identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action. Ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA rules.

Under NCAA rules, KU is responsible for all actions of its boosters. Therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity. Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets. In addition, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated NCAA rules and regulations from the institution. COMPLIANCE TERMINOLOGY BOOSTERS. You are a representative of KU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions: • • • • • •

You are a member of any organization that promotes KU’s athletics program (e.g., Williams Education Fund); You have made a financial contribution to the KU athletics department or its booster organization; You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for KU; You have provided benefits (e.g., summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled student-athletes; You are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled student-athlete; or You have, in any way, promoted the athletics program at KU.

Remember: Once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely. Even if you are not a booster as defined by the NCAA, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of NCAA rules. Something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a NCAA violation. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits. PROSPECTS. A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student

for recruiting purposes or provides the student (or the student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students. In addition, studentathletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective student-athletes. Remember: A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement to attend KU. The prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first. After classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete. CONTACT. A “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. However, any such face-toface encounter on the KU campus or during a KU event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, twoyear college or all-star team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs. TELEPHONE/ELECTRONIC CORRESPONDENCE CONTACT. The restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited. Electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i.e. snapchat), email, any social media methods (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), chat rooms and instant message. Telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as Skype and Facetime.

EMPLOYMENT. It is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent. However, no contact may be made without approval from the Athletic Compliance Office. In addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school. If the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college. EXTRA BENEFITS. It is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise. A representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide ANYTHING to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed National Letter of Intent or a Financial Aid Agreement. STUDENT-ATHLETE. A student-athlete is any University of Kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team. EXTRA BENEFITS. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. It is a violation of the NCAA rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete. OCCASIONAL MEAL. You may provide a student-athlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home. This meal can be catered and you may provide the studentathletes with transportation to attend the meal. All occasional meals must be pre-approved by the Athletic Compliance Office.

RECRUITING. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited.

Together, the University of Kansas and YOU will make this program a success. These reminders will help guide you and ensure that Kansas Athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the NCAA as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence. If in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited.

It is not permissible for any member of Kansas Athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment. A student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the University of Kansas.

FOR SPECIFIC NCAA RULE INTERPRETATIONS, PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC COMPLIANCE OFFICE:

If you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend KU, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach. Contacting a KU coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate.
