THE K RING The K Ring symbolizes a uniquely shared experience between generations of varsity letter winners at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk you are expected to uphold tradition and retain the characteristics of a champion while continuing the create your own legacy.

5.

WAVING THE WHEAT Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to “wave the wheat” following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans “wave the wheat” when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

6.

THE ROCK CHALK CHANT The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

On a sunny fall Saturday, the “Hill” is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. THE ALMA MATER In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song “Far Above Cayuga’s Waters.” Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but “Crimson and the Blue” still goes on. The music is not Cornell’s but an old English folk tune, “Annie Lisle.”

“GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU’VE GOT AND THE BEST WILL COME BACK TO YOU.”

THE NICKNAME: JAYHAWK The University of Kansas is the home of the Jayhawk, a mythical bird with a fascinating history. Its origin is rooted in the historic struggles of Kansas settlers. The term “Jayhawk” was probably coined about 1848. Accounts of its use appeared from Illinois to Texas. The name combines two birds - the blue jay, a noisy, quarrelsome thing known to rob other nests, and the sparrow hawk, a stealthy hunter.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, senior Crystal Manning (long jump and triple jump) and junior Nickesha Anderson (100 meters and 200 meters) each won two All-America honors. Only one other woman (Candace Mason) had previously accomplished the feat in KU history. nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track & field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions in the hurdle and sprint events. Among those AllAmericans were two-time 400-meter NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Calvin Davis, three-time 400-meter and 500-meter NCAA champion Robbie Haley and seven-time AllAmerican sprinter Jimmy French. His success as an assistant earned him the head coaching position at the University of Tulsa in 1994. In six years at Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. He produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever AllAmerican. On May 25, 2000, Redwine was rewarded for his efforts by being hired as the head coach at the University of Kansas. Michael Whittlesey is in his seventh season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/ distance running at Kansas. In his time in Lawrence, Whittlesey has made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his six seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided four Jayhawks to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships: Lauren Bonds, which was a first for a KU woman since the 1994 season, as well as Donny Wasinger in 2010, Reid Buchanan in 2013 and Jacob Morgan in 2014. Additionally, in 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Whittlesey’s competitive experience includes being the first American finisher in the 1995 Boston Marathon. He also qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials in the marathon after competing as a non-recruited athlete at the University of Connecticut. He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master’s in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UConn. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: 10-year-old daughter Samantha and eight-year-old son Ryan.

Whittlesey mentored Bonds to an outstanding 2010 senior season as she claimed the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 1,500 meters and went on to earn All-America honors by taking seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. En route to earning All-America status, Bonds set a new KU record in the event with

Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A three-time recipient of the NCAA

A native of Morris, Connecticut, Whittlesey started his coaching career at UConn as a graduate assistant, where he assisted with distance and was a pole vault and multi-event coach. He then served two years at UNC-Charlotte where he worked as an assistant coach. While with the 49ers, Whittlesey led his athletes to 53 new school records in 18 different events and coached all-conference performers in the triple jump and javelin.

W

Whittlesey’s most decorated Jayhawk, Stowe, was the 2012 Big 12 Champion in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and broke the school record in the event on numerous occasions. She earned First Team AllAmerica honors at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships with her top-12 finishes in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Stowe was also a twotime All-Big 12 honoree on the cross country course.

After assisting the Tar Heels to a fourth-place indoor finish and another top-10 outdoor finish and producing four NCAA individual and relay titles, Whittlesey was awarded the first-ever NCAA Division I Track & Field National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s middle distance/distance in 2003. Whittlesey also received the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor.

Whittlesey twice won both the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year and Southeast Region Coach of the Year awards, earning each in 1999 and 2003.

Kcc

Whittlesey has mentored nine Jayhawks to AllAmerica honors on the track and has seen four of his athletes break school records (Lauren Bonds indoor mile, indoor 3,000m, outdoor 1,500m, outdoor 5,000m; Amanda Miller - indoor 5,000m, Rebeka Stowe - indoor 3,000m, 3,000m Steeplechase and Natalie Becker - indoor 3,000m, outdoor 5,000m).

Under his direction, North Carolina middle distance/ distance produced nine NCAA champions in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Whittlesey led the track team to back-to-back NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career.

Whittlesey also coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track & field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track & Field World Championship team, while Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track.

COACHING STAFF

Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track & field and cross country for his last four seasons at UNC.

Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3,000 meters and then teamed up with Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take firstplace honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games.

The Jayhawk men kicked off the morning with the 6K race and it didn’t take long for the eventual individual champion to declare himself. Iowa Western’s Sylvester Barus opened up a lead of more than 200 meters after the opening mile and never looked back. The freshman posted a winning time of 18:21.6 to earn the win and break a string of three-straight Jayhawk individual champions at the Bob Timmons. With Barus going out early, the Jayhawk men kept to their game plan and held a tight pack over the first half of the race. Sophomore Tyler Yunk, the defending champion, as well as Chris Malgares took up posts as the leaders of that pack for the first portions of the race, but it was the veteran Jacob Morgan that took control as the group ran past the 4K marker. Morgan, a junior transfer out of Colorado State and Topeka, Kansas native, raced to a runner-up finish after pulling away from his teammates over the final 2,000 meters. He posted a time of 19:16.2 in his first outing as a Jayhawk. Yunk came through the finish just over 17 seconds later for a third-place finish, while Malgares was next in fourth with his time of 19:38.6. Junior Brandon Bernal and freshman Juan del Azar were the next two Jayhawk scorers. Bernal posted a time of 20:22.9, good enough for a 12th-place finish and del Azar capped off his debut race with a 13th-place finish in 20:28.4. BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

RIM ROCK FARM | NOV. 1, 2014 | LAWRENCE, KAN.

Kansas junior Jacob Morgan made the hometown crowd proud as he hung with the leaders from start to finish on his home course and helped the Kansas men to a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships Nov. 1 at Rim Rock Farm. Morgan tallied a fifth-place individual finish, which earned him All-Big 12 accolades and saw him named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.

TEAM FINISH - 5TH INDIV. FINISHERS (OUT OF 81) 5. Jacob Morgan . . . . . . . . . 21. James Wilson . . . . . . . . . 30. Chris Melgares . . . . . . . . 38. Tyler Yunk . . . . . . . . . . . 45. Morgan, who hails from Topeka, Kansas, was nothing short of spectacular as he traversed his way through the 8K race at Kansas’ 30-year home course at Rim Rock Farm. The men’s race, which featured four of the top-30 ranked teams in the nation, began at a relatively slow pace, resulting in a tightly packed group of runners battling for the lead through the first half of the race.

TIME 24:16.2 24:49.7 25:00.2 25:24.1 25:37.5 25:43.1 25:46.3 27:27.5

With less than 500 meters to go, Morgan was shoulder-to-shoulder with five runners jockeying for the lead as they headed into the home stretch. The junior was unable to keep up with the impressive finishing kick of the eventual champion, Oklahoma State’s Kirubel Erassa, but came across the finish just eight seconds later to tally a fifth-place finish in 24:16.2.

Morgan maintained his position for the remainder of the race, completing the last 3K in 9:21.6 to finish 29th overall. He traversed the Championship course in 24:50.1, averaging a consistent 3:06.3 split for each kilometer. Morgan was one of three runners from the Big 12 Conference to place among the top-30 finishers.

Morgan’s finish is the highest by a Jayhawk at the Big 12 meet since 2007, when Colby Wissel also claimed fifth place. A transfer from Colorado State, Morgan was the highest finisher among first-year competitors at the Big 12 meet, which earned him the conference’s Newcomer of the Year honors. The award was claimed by a KU male for the first time.

Freshman Chris Melgares was the next Jayhawk to come down the finish chute, completing his 8K just under a minute later, in 25:45.7, to finish 146th overall. Sophomores James Hampton and Tyler Yunk followed with nearly identical finishes. Hampton placed 189th in 26:04.7 while Yunk was not far behind, posting a 190th-place finish in 26:04.9. Freshman Ben Burchstead rounded out the KU men’s scoring with his time of 26:22.7, which was good enough to earn him 230th place

The next four Jayhawks to score all placed within the top-45 finishers. Crossing the finish just over 30 seconds later than Morgan was James Wilson, who posted a 21st-place finish with his time of 24:49.7. Chris Melgares was next, finishing in 30th after he completed his race in 25:00.2.

The Jayhawk men combined to amass 784 points and finished 33rd in the 46-team field.

The Jayhawk men tallied a fifth-place finish in the team standings after tallying 123 points. It marked the sixth time in Big 12 history and second time in three years that the Kansas men finished in the top-five of the team standings.

NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS NEWMAN GOLF COURSE | NOV. 14, 2014 | PEORIA, ILL.

A seventh-place finish from Junior Jacob Morgan highlighted solid outings from the Kansas men’s cross country team Nov. 14 at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Bradley University at Newman Golf Course. Morgan’s top10 finish led his team to a 13th-place finish.

TEAM FINISH - 13TH TIME 30:17.6 31:11.8 31:19.4 31:21.8 31:38.9 31:53.9 31:58.0

On a cool and damp afternoon in Terre Haute, Morgan set out in his second-career NCAA Championship race in hopes of becoming the 22nd All-American in Kansas cross country history. It was no easy task though, with over 250 of the top collegiate distance runners in the U.S. filling the starting blocks alongside him. Over the first 3,000 meters, the Topeka, Kansas native firmly planted himself in the middle of the enormous lead pack of runners that included more than 120 competitors positioned within five seconds of one another. Morgan posted a 3K split of 9:13 and stood in 44th with two of the six miles under his belt. Morgan held his position over the next two kilometers, remaining just two seconds behind the leaders at the 5K checkpoint. At that halfway mark, the field began to spread out as the front-runners started to pick up the pace. Morgan’s placement slipped over the next two miles and he saw himself sitting in 90th has he headed into the final 2,000 meters. As he had done all year, Morgan ended his race strong and posted a final 2K split of 6:24.6 to move ahead of a handful of runners down the closing stretch and cross the finish among the top-100 finishers. Morgan posted a final time of 31:29.3.0 to finish 91st overall and, while he missed earning AllAmerican accolades by just under 30 seconds, his place marked the best finish by a Jayhawk at the NCAA Championships in seven years.

H

The men amassed 330 points, which was good enough for a 13th-place finish.

Kansas junior Jacob Morgan closed out his 2014 cross country campaign with a 91st-place finish at the NCAA Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course Nov. 22. Morgan completed the 10K course in 31:29.3 and tallied the first top-100 finish by a Jayhawk at the National meet since 2007.

The next three Kansas scorers all finished inside the top-101. Freshman Chris Melgares posted a 78thplace and completed his first 10K in 31:19.4. Sophomore Tyler Yunk finished in KU’s top-five for the second-straight year with his 82nd-place finish in 31:21.8. Freshman Carson Vickroy rounded out the team scoring by finishing 101st in 31:38.9.

Senior James Wilson also had his sights set on a top-25 finish and a spot on the All-Region team, however an unfortunate trip-up dashed those hopes just over halfway through the race. The Abilene, Kansas product started his race up there with his teammate, Morgan, climbing as high as seventh during the first half of the competition. Wilson was tripped and fell between the 5K and 6K checkpoints, which cost him valuable time and positions but he powered through, finishing in 31:11.8, which was good enough for 69th.

Morgan gave up the lead but didn’t fall far from the front, running the final 3,000 meters in 8:15 to post a top-10 finish at the Regional meet, just the second by a KU male in the last seven seasons. Morgan clocked in with a 10K time of 30:17.6 to finish seventh-overall which marked the highest finish by a KU male since 2007. His high finish also earned him All-Region accolades for the second time in his career. Morgan first claimed the honor when he ran for Colorado State in the Mountain Region Championships a year ago.

Morgan, who hails from Topeka, Kansas, never strayed from the lead group of 25 during the 10K race on a cold and blustery day in Peoria. The junior set up a firm position among the top-10 runners less than 2,000 meters into the race and never faltered, moving up to as high as seventh through the first half of the race. After the 5K checkpoint, Morgan kicked it into another gear as he took over the lead with less than 3,000 meters to go. He was followed closely by a host of other competitors though as the lead pack of 15 runners were all within three seconds of the Jayhawk at the 7K mark.

Rounding out the KU scoring effort were sophomore Tyler Yunk (38th, 25:24.1) and freshman Carson Vickroy (45th, 25:37.5).

2014 IN REVIEW

Morgan, who hails from Topeka, Kansas, was the top finisher on the men’s side for the third time this season. The junior was forced to navigate through throngs of some of the top distance runners in the country, which was especially difficult early in the race. Morgan came through the 2K checkpoint in 66th overall but used the next 1,000 meters to make a strong charge toward the leaders. He ran the next kilometer in 3:03.1 to check in at 26th with just over half the race still to go.

RIM ROCK FARM | NOV. 1, 2014 | LAWRENCE, KAN.

The Kansas women notched an eighth-place finish behind sophomore Nashia Baker’s 36thplace run at the Big 12 Championships Nov. 1 at Rim Rock Farm. For the fourth-straight race, Baker was the top finisher for the KU women, leading the Jayhawks from wire-to-wire. The Lansing, Kansas native worked hard to stay within striking distance of the lead pack, who got the 6K race started at a quick pace. The sophomore was followed closely by teammates Rachel Simon and Kelli McKenna, who never strayed more than 10 seconds behind the lead Jayhawk.

2014 IN REVIEW

It was a familiar scene for the KU women as Baker led the team for the third-straight race. Baker got caught behind the congested number of competitors in the early stages of the race, coming through the 3K checkpoint in 154th. Once the field began to spread out during the second half of the race, she made her move toward the leaders. Baker jumped 23 spots over the last 2,000 meters to complete her 6K by tallying a 116th-place finish after traversing the course in 22:12.0.

JAYHAWKS EARN ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM STATUS FOR 2014 SEASON

WOMEN’S ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 First Team Malika Baker Nashia Baker Courtney Coppinger Hannah Dimmick (4.0 GPA) Julia Dury Hayley Francis Grace Morgan

The Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams earned All-Academic Team honors for the 2014 season by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Jayhawks’ Jacob Morgan was also honored as he claimed individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. To be eligible for the award, a team must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA and must have had at least five runners compete at the NCAA regional championship meet in November. KU was one of five teams in the Big 12 Conference to see both its men’s and women’s teams earn the distinction. The Jayhawk men amassed a GPA of 3.10, while the women ended the fall semester with a 3.31 cumulative GPA. The KU men were led by the junior, Morgan, who not only excelled on the cross country trails, but in the classroom during his first year as a Jayhawk. The Topeka, Kansas native earned a spot on the NCAA Midwest All-Region Team after his seventh-place performance at the Midwest Regional in November. The Jayhawk women earned All-Academic team status after the squad combined for a 3.31 GPA in the fall. The team garnered the honor for the sixth-straight season, while the KU men earned the distinction for the fifthconsecutive year.

CROSS COUNTRY

When ranking Kansas runners in the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since Brent Steiner took seventh in 1984. His finish at the NCAA meet in 2004 earned him All-America honors, the first KU male to do so in 20 years.

Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-toback years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005). A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added AllAmerica status to Frame’s resumé.

1948-1965

In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles. Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932. Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 193234, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

KU CROSS COUNTRY LEGENDS

As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status.

Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-ofFamer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton.

A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his secondplace performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the threemile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor

championships in 1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams. Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships.

In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk cross country teams ever

since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one of the best and toughest cross country courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

M

Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor AllAmerican after back-to-back third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA Championships. Semper’s statue at Rim Rock Farm is surrounded by three ponds (Teardrop Pond, Jayhawk Pond and Pat’s Little Pond) on the northeast portion of the course.

Bob Timmons is to Kansas cross country what Phog Allen is to Kansas basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship.

Saul’s track career was just has decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She held the school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters for 20 years and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. Santee collected eight conference championships: four indoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards) and four outdoor (1952-54, mile run; 1953, 880 yards).

Arguably the greatest female runner Kansas cross country has ever seen, Julia Saul was the catalyst that began the rise of the women’s program. After the Lawrence native transferred to KU from Oregon following the 1990 season, she put together a list of accolades that no other woman in the Crimson and Blue has been able to match. To this day she is the only female cross country All-American in Kansas history, earning the honor with her 18th-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Championships. A three-time All-Big Eight and All-District V selection, she collected a total of six individual titles throughout her career, including the 1991 District V title. Saul became just the fifth Jayhawk in the history of both the men’s and women’s programs to run in three NCAA Championship meets, finishing 32nd, 16th and 65th in the three races.

During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3 stood for nearly 30 years.

A Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the traditionrich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kansas, native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s AllAmerica performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming back-toback league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953).

HISTORY

There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A threetime Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games.

UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR Since arriving at the University of Kansas in 2009, Bernadette Gray-Little has advanced KU’s mission of lifting students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities, and making discoveries that change the world. Through the Bold Aspirations strategic plan, KU is changing the way it prepares students for success. It’s fostering research and scholarship across all disciplines, and sharing the benefits of a flagship university with the state and world. Gray-Little led the effort to create new admission standards for the University of Kansas. These new standards take effect in 2016 and will give students and families a more accurate picture of what it takes to be successful at a research university.

Under Chancellor Gray-Little’s leadership, the university has also revamped financial aid, creating four-year renewable scholarships and expanding the Jayhawk Generations Scholarship. And it has launched its first university-wide curriculum, the KU Core, which incorporates both classes and experiences, making KU a leader among its national peers.

Gray-Little has also been instrumental to Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, KU Endowment’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Additionally, the university’s Changing for Excellence initiative is making administrative operations more efficient, with the savings being invested in education and research. As chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City, Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Prior to becoming KU’s 17th Chancellor, Gray-Little held leadership positions at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, including executive vice chancellor and provost.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kansas native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them – and their studentathletes – every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics.

Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He is married to the former Pam McAnarney; they have three children: Luke, Abby and Jake.

Still, coaching stayed in his blood. He joined the football staff at the University of South Florida and then at the University of Wyoming before returning to Kansas State, eventually serving as KSU’s associate athletics director for development. He held that position until becoming Athletics Director at Illinois State in 2005.

Zenger has spearheaded a tremendous upgrade in Kansas Athletics’ facilities as well – improvements he expects will help KU’s coaches and student-athletes continue their run of outstanding performances. Most notable among these is the completion of Rock Chalk Park, which contains new, state-of-the-art stadiums for KU’s Track & Field, Soccer and Softball programs. Memorial Stadium has received a facelift as well. In summer 2014 the track surrounding the football field was removed, replaced with new artificial turf, bringing the turf to within 10 feet of the stands. In addition, construction is underway on the DeBruce Center, the permanent home of James Naismith’s original “Rules of Basket Ball,” adjacent to

It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He came to KU to earn his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels.

COACHING HISTORY

During the last two academic years – 2013-14 and 2014-15 – 11 KU teams were represented in NCAA postseason competition, the most KU appearances in one year in more than a decade.

Zenger’s career took several turns before landing in athletics administration. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, and even before he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State, he was pursuing his dream of coaching by assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation; he then joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State, serving in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations.

A National Championship for the Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team, and seven individual national championships. An NCAA Final Four appearance for Men’s Basketball and five more Big 12 regular-season Championships, raising that streak of titles to 11. Two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances for Women’s Basketball. An NCAA Sweet 16 (and three straight NCAA appearances) for Volleyball. NCAA Championship appearances for Softball (twice), Baseball, Soccer and Women’s Golf. A National Coach-of-the-Year award (Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field) and several Big 12 Conference Coach-of-the-Year awards – Bill Self, men’s basketball (twice), Stanley Redwine, women’s track and field (twice), Ray Bechard, volleyball (twice), and Clark Campbell, swimming.

Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU also reached highs in fundraising, academics and community service during Zenger’s tenure there.

HISTORY

Since Zenger’s arrival at KU, those coaches and student-athletes have raised the bar with outstanding performances on both the conference and national stages. Highlights include:

historic Allen Fieldhouse. Finally, the beautiful new McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s basketball team and an equal number of distinguished nonstudent-athletes, opens its doors for the 2015-16 academic year.

Monitoring its program to ensure compliance with identifying and reporting to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved and taking appropriate corrective action. Ensuring that members of the institution’s staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the institution’s athletics interests comply with all applicable NCAA rules.

Under NCAA rules, KU is responsible for all actions of its boosters. Therefore, it is also our responsibility to make you aware of consequences for violating the rules pertaining to permissible booster activity. Boosters found in violation are subject to losing benefits and privileges, including season tickets. In addition, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has required institutions to disassociate boosters who have violated NCAA rules and regulations from the institution. COMPLIANCE TERMINOLOGY BOOSTERS. You are a representative of KU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster,” if you meet any of the following conditions: •

• • •

• •

You are a member of any organization that promotes KU’s athletics program (e.g., Williams Education Fund); You have made a financial contribution to the KU athletics department or its booster organization; You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes for KU; You have provided benefits (e.g., summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled studentathletes; You are the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of an enrolled student-athlete; or You have, in any way, promoted the athletics program at KU.

Remember: Once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains this identity indefinitely. Even if you are not a booster as defined by the NCAA, know that your actions involving student-athletes can cause violations of NCAA rules. Something as simple as buying a student-athlete lunch at a fast food restaurant is, most likely, a NCAA violation. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office with your questions regarding impermissible recruiting inducements and extra benefits. PROSPECTS. A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect” or “recruit,” is any individual who has started classes for the ninth grade. In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospect if the institution contacts the student for recruiting purposes or provides the student

(or the student’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not generally provide to all prospective students. In addition, student-athletes enrolled in preparatory schools or two-year colleges are considered prospective studentathletes. Remember: A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement to attend KU. The prospect does not lose this status until the start of classes at the university or until the beginning of official practice prior to the start of classes, whichever occurs first. After classes or official practice begins, the prospective student-athlete then simply becomes a student-athlete. CONTACT. A “contact” is a face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent, relative or legal guardian and institutional staff member or athletics representative during which dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. However, any such face-to-face encounter on the KU campus or during a KU event that is prearranged, or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of an organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team, shall be considered a contact, regardless of the content of the conversation that occurs. TELEPHONE/ELECTRONIC CORRESPONDENCE CONTACT. The restriction on contact extends to telephone and electronic correspondence. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of athletics interest via these modes of comunication is prohibited. Electronic correspondence includes, but not limited to, text messaging or any application that functions as a text message (i.e. snapchat), email, any social media methods (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), chat rooms and instant message. Telephone contact is any electronically-transmitted voice exchange including, but not limited to, calls and video conferenceing such as as Skype and Facetime.

addition, the employment arrangement for the prospect may not begin until the prospect has graduated from high school. If the prospect is attending a two-year institution, the employment may not begin prior to the time that the prospect has officially withdrawn from or has completed the requirements for graduation at the two-year college. EXTRA BENEFITS. It is not permissible to provide any type of assistance to a prospect — financial or otherwise. A representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests or a “booster” may not provide ANYTHING to a prospect, their friends or family, even if the prospect has a signed National Letter of Intent or a Financial Aid Agreement. STUDENT-ATHLETE. A student-athlete is any University of Kansas student who is a member of a varsity athletics team. EXTRA BENEFITS. An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with a benefit not expressly authorized by the NCAA legislation. It is a violation of the NCAA rules to provide an extra benefit to a student-athlete. OCCASIONAL MEAL. You may provide a studentathlete or a team with an occasional meal at your home. This meal can be catered and you may provide the student-athletes with transportation to attend the meal. All occasional meals must be pre-approved by the Athletic Compliance Office. Together, the University of Kansas and YOU will make this program a success. These reminders will help guide you and ensure that Kansas Athletics operates within the rules and regulations of the NCAA as we continue toward our ultimate goal of academic and athletics excellence. If in doubt, remember that in most cases any contact with or benefits given to a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete or their family or friends is strictly prohibited.

RECRUITING. Any contact by you or any other booster, alumnus or other representative of Kansas Athletics’ interests for the purpose of recruitment, is strictly and clearly prohibited. It is not permissible for any member of Kansas Athletics’ staff, alumnus or booster to contact a student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of recruitment. A student-athlete who is attending another institution must receive written permission from their institution before they can have contact with the University of Kansas. If you know of a prospective student-athlete who may want to attend KU, we encourage you to call the appropriate coach. Contacting a KU coach is the only permissible recruiting activity in which boosters may participate. EMPLOYMENT. It is permissible for an athletics representative or alumnus/alumna to contact a prospect regarding summer employment prior to initial enrollment provided the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent. However, no contact may be made without approval from the Athletic Compliance Office. In
