Season Outlook Distance Freestyle

Kansas is led in this category by junior Rebecca Swank, who had a solid summer swimming for Kansas Aquatics and is close to her Olympic Trial cut in both the 400 and 800 free. Also contributing in the distance free is sophomore Morgan Sharp, who swims the 200 and 500 free and senior captain Shannon Garlie. Sophomore Alison Moffitt “improved a lot and really got the program figured out,” said Coach Campbell. “Now she knows what the expectations are here, so we are expecting big things out of her.” Fellow sophomore Malia Johnson is also someone who adds depth to the 500 and 1,000 free events.

Senior Abigail Anderson stands out in this category as she narrowly missed the NCAA Championship in the 100 fly the last few years and is looking to make a splash during her final season in Lawrence.

five were key contributors in the team’s 10-5 dual record in 2010-11 and 2-1 Big 12 Conference mark. Five new faces will don KU suits this fall, including three freshmen and two juniors.

Leading Kansas this year will be its three senior captains, two additional seniors and nine juniors. With a total of 15 upperclassmen, KU will no doubt bring much experience to the pool this season as the Jayhawks try to outswim and dive their opponents in the Big 12 and beyond.

“Senior Kath Liggett had a tremendous summer and is our new team record holder in the 100 meter butterfly because of her performance at sectionals,” said Campbell.

Freestyle

Kansas adds two new faces to its freestyle corps this season in junior newcomers Vanessa Hanbury and Svetlana Golovchun. Hanbury comes to Lawrence from Indian River State College in Florida, while Golovchun will now call KU home after swimming at Surgut State in her home country of Russia. “Svetlana is one of the top swimmers in her country and Vanessa is a two-time junior college swimmer of the year,” said head Coach Clark Campbell. “So I think in those areas we will be very strong.” Also contributing in the free category are sophomores Shelby Cox and Kara Stranski as well as junior Madison Wagner. Cox is coming off an injury this summer, but showed promise, scoring points for her team in the 2011 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. Senior captain Sarah Hettenbach will add much leadership and depth to this group as she looks to improve upon a solid 2010-11 campaign.

Also adding depth in that category is sophomore Malia Johnson, who was a national qualifier in the 200 butterfly at the 2011 Big 12 Championship as well as Stephanie Payne, who is another national qualifier in the 200 fly and has improved her 100 fly quite a bit, according to her coach. Joining Johnson and Payne will be two freshmen in Deanna Marks and Rachel Snyder. Marks will be looked upon right away to contribute in those areas as will Snyder who was a national qualifier during high school in the 200 fly.

Season Outlook

Season outlook Backstroke

Anderson is the top returner in the backstroking corps for the Jayhawks during the 2011-12 season, who made her relay Nationals cuts in the 100 and 200 meter backstrokes. “Abigail is somebody who we will be looking to lead-off the medley, especially in the 200,” said Campbell. “She is a dynamite 50-yard backstroker, so she will no doubt be leading the way.” Junior Brooke Brull will be another solid contributor in the backstroke events as well fellow junior Alyssa Rudman. Freshman Caroline Patterson will add depth to the backstroking corps and as Coach Campbell put it, “will lead this event down the road in her career.” Patterson will follow in the path of sophomore Sara Snow, who was a newcomer to the team and event in 2010-11 and will provide strong leadership to the group.

“Stephanie has had just a remarkable run in both the 200 and 400 IM, but we would like to get her 200 (time) faster,” said Campbell. “If we do that, it will help her 400 IM, which is an event she can swim in the NCAA Championships.” Brull will return for another solid campaign and hope to improve in the 200 IM, where Coach Campbell brands her as “one of our fastest swimmers in the 200 IM.” Also seeing time in the 200 IM slot will be Lusk, who will looked upon to score points for KU during dual meets and Big 12’s, as well as fellow junior Brittany Rospierski, who will help out in the shorter IM events. Specializing in the 400 IM will be Moffit, who had a solid end of her sophomore campaign. “Last year Alison pretty much shocked everybody in the program with how well she did in the 400 IM at Big 12’s,” Campbell remembered. “She scored some points and came very close to making her USA National cut, so we expect big things out of her this year as well.” Junior Rebecca Swank teams up with Moffitt as a fellow scorer at last year’s Big 12 Championship and will add some depth and experience to the 400 IM.

Stephanie Payne Breaststroke

The Jayhawks will have a relatively young look to the breaststrokers as sophomore and national qualifier Alison Lusk heads up the group. Following Lusk will be juniors Brittany Rospierski and Cora Powers, who Campbell says had “fantastic summers” swimming for Kansas Aquatics. Rounding out the group is senior Stephanie Payne, who will contribute heavily during dual meets in the 200.

The unquestionable leader for Kansas in this event is another senior captain in Payne, whose 4:51.46 time in the 400 IM during Nationals this past summer gave her a second event to compete in during the 2012 Olympic Time Trials in Omaha.

one meter dive Sophomore Alyssa Golden will look to improve in what is already her strongest event as junior Christy Cash will provide solid depth and experience. Both Golden and Cash tallied career-best scores in the one-meter in 2010-11 and will have a good chance at eclipsing their 243.25 and 272.25 scores, respectively. “Alyssa now has her first year under her belt and knows what this conference is all about,” said diving coach Eric Elliott. “She is a super hard worker and learns very well, so just knowing what to expect this year and how hard she is going to have to work is an important step in the right direction.”

Season Outlook

Season outlook three meter dive

Cash leads the way in the three meter events, where she compiled a 224.40 score in the Zone “D” Diving Championships last season. Her career-best score of 246.90 came earlier in the season against Iowa State. This season, coach Elliott expects her to improve in this event as well as the two others she competes in. “I think this year she is really going to step it up,” Elliott said. “We are changing her hurdle a little bit and she is learning some new dives, so she is starting to beef up her degree of difficulty, which is important.”

Golden will add depth to the event. She, along with Cash, received career best scores in the three-meter event last season.

Outside of the Pool

Platform Dive

The platform is Cash’s strongest event according to Elliott, who thinks she should improve this season, especially with a trip to Columbia in early December, where she will get to practice at the Mizzou Invite. “Junior year is usually a pretty good step for divers,” Elliott said. “If they keep it going, which she (Cash) has been healthy, knock on wood, by her senior year, she is going to be able to really dive well.”

Bunting & Fox

In 2011-12, the Jayhawks will boast one of the most seasoned and experienced coaching staffs they have had in recent memory. Former KU swimming standout Danielle Herrmann returns for her second season as a volunteer assistant. Herrmann continues to swim competitively, as she suited up for Coach Campbell and Kansas Aquatics over the summer, finishing with two of the five fastest times on the team. Joining Herrmann on deck will be former teammate Joy Bunting, who after finishing up her senior season last year, will stay on with the team as a student assistant coach.

Christy Cash

“Having a consistent coaching staff over the last eight years has led to much success and efficiency in our program,” said assistant swim coach Jen Fox. “With the addition of Danielle and Joy working with us, I believe that we can provide the team with one of the best coaching staffs and resources possible.”

Cash tallied a careerhigh score of 225.60 in the event during the Big 12 Championships last season and finished 22nd in the platform during the Zone “D” Championships last March.

ansas Aquatics wrapped up its second summer of competition in early August, with more than half of the KU swimmers participating. KA is a swim club, open to local collegiate swimmers within 50 miles of Lawrence. It is a member of Missouri Valley Swimming, a division of the USA Swimming organization. Kansas Aquatics provides current KU swimmers with an opportunity to train with their team during the summer. “The summer season is valuable to the collegiate season because it helps you prepare and stay in shape,” said Kansas assistant coach Jen Fox. Participating in KA also gives student-athletes an opportunity to stay in Lawrence and take summer classes as well as exploring internships and other job opportunities.

While there are plenty of opportunities that Kansas Aquatics provides a swimmer, the coaching staff understands that some student-athletes may want to swim for clubs they have competed for in the past. “We are fully supportive of athletes going home over the summer, provided that the team they will be training with has a high level of training for the summer season,” said head coach Clark Campbell.

The main focus is Sectionals and Nationals, and depending on the year, the Olympic Trials. Swimmers who have participated in Kansas Aquatics over the past two seasons say their experience in the summer pays off in the fall. “Kansas Aquatics helped me build a foundation athletically as well as strengthening my relationships with my teammates. This helped me to jump start my collegiate season when it started in the fall,” said Joy Bunting, former KU and KA swimmer and current KU student assistant. In the summer of 2011 there were 14 swimmers representing Kansas Aquatics, 12 of which are current KU swimmers.

Kansas Aquatics swam to a first-place finish during sectionals,

beating out over 100 swim clubs from six different states throughout the Midwest. In 2010, KA finished third during sectionals, but with a first-place finish in all three relay events and 50-points scored by KU junior Rebecca Swank, KA was able to come out on top in 2011.

Stephanie Payne continued to have a stellar summer as the senior qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in her second event. Her 38th-place finish in the 400 IM (4:51.46), was the highest any Kansas Aquatics member has placed since the summer swim club began competing at Nationals in 2010.

Among the many highlights for head coach Clark Campbell’s crew was senior Stephaine Payne qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Trials with her 2:16.39 in the 200 meter fly. Joining Payne and Swank in their team's success were former Jayhawk standouts Maria Mayrovich and Danielle Herrmann, who competed for KA during the summer.

“Stephanie has had a tremendous summer,” said head coach Clark Campbell. “She is going to leave here as one of the best student-athletes that we have had in the program.” Riding the wave of momentum set by their teammate, other members of Kansas Aquatics also had successful performances at Nationals. Former Jayhawk standout and current KU volunteer assistant Danielle Herrmann finished 66th in the 100 breast (1:12.27) and 84th in the 200 IM with her 2:20.41 time. Herrmann was just six spots behind Payne whose 2:20.27 gave her a 78th-place finish in the event. Sophomore Alison Lusk also finished in the top 100 of one of her events, as she placed 90th in the 200 breast. KA finished 33rd, 31st and 34th, respectively, in each of its relay events.

Mayrovich scored 40 total points with her first-place finishes in the 100 and 50 free. Herrmann, who is a volunteer assistant coach for KU during the regular season, racked up 17 points with her second-place finish in the 200 IM. Current Jayhawk, Payne scored a total of 33 points for her team during sectionals. “We were shocked that we were even in the running to win sectionals,” said head coach Clark Campbell after the meet. “We had a fantastic weekend of swimming and this sets us up really well for nationals.”

The Road to London Kansas senior captain Stephanie Payne is one step closer to competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London after she made trial cuts in two separate events during summer 2011, while swimming for Kansas Aquatics and head coach Clark Campbell.

Payne finished with a lifetime best 2:16.39 time in the 200-meter butterfly at sectionals in Columbia, Mo., and a 4:51.46 time in the 400 IM two weeks later at Nationals in Palo Alto, Calif. Both performances were enough to send her to Omaha, Neb., for the 2012 Olympic Trials to be held from June 25-July 2. “I am more than excited to see where next year takes me,” Payne said. “Being able to compete at the Olympic Trials will be a great way to complete my career.” “We are really proud of her accomplishments,” head coach Clark Campbell said of Payne. “It is every swimmer’s goal to have an opportunity to go to Olympic trials and represent their country in the games, so these were no doubt big steps for Stephanie in achieving her life-long goal.” Payne, a senior from Derby, Kan., is coming off a successful junior campaign in which she broke two school records (one of which she already owned), at the Big 12 Championships in February, while scoring a total of 27 points for her team in the process.

The Jayhawks host events at Robinson Natatorium, which has served as the home for Kansas swimming and diving for over 40 years. The facility has gone through numerous upgrades throughout the years. The current structure features a 25-meter, eight-lane competition pool, a 25-yard, sixlane pool and a diving well. Kansas recently overhauled the swimming and diving locker room for the 2011-12 season; the following pages highlight those renovations.

Senior Butterfly, Backstroke Hendersonville, Tenn. • Hendersonville HS 2010-11 (Junior): Continued to be one of the top swimmers for Kansas in the butterfly and backstroke events... She scored 77 points for the Jayhawks at the 2011 Big 12 Championships... Was a part of the 200 medley relay team, which finished in third place, as well as the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams that finished fourth... Compiled career-best times in three individual events during Big 12’s with her 53.47 performance and sixth-place finish in the 100 butterfly... She also took eighth in the 100 backstroke (53.56) and 10th in the 200 back (1:57.52)... At the Georgia Invite, Anderson competed in the 50 freestyle for first the time in her collegiate career, where she finished with a time of 25.04.... Clark Campbell

During Campbell’s ninth season as head swim coach, KU compiled their second highest dual meet win total since 2008-09, with a 10-5 record and a 2-1 mark in the Big 12. KU was also a strong performer at its home pool, amassing a 5-1 record inside the Robinson Natatorium. Under his guidance, senior Iuliia Kuzhil represented KU at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, where she competed in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events.

Outside of the pool, Campbell’s team compiled a combined 3.21 GPA for the fall 2010 semester, which was the fourth highest of any team in the Kansas athletic program. Twin sister swimmers, Alyssa and Brittany Potter, were inducted into Rho Chi, a national academic honor society for pharmacy following the 2010-11 season and senior Joy Bunting was named the 2011 Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics.

The Jayhawks finished a successful 2009-10 season with a 9-4 dual record under the leadership of Campbell. KU had two representatives at the NCAA Championships, one Honorable Mention All-American and 13 swimmers and divers named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Team. At the 2010 NCAA Championships, backstroke swimmer Iuliia Kuzhil placed ninth in both the 100-yard (52.02) and 200-yard (1:53.44) backstroke events. Diving standout Meg Proehl also competed, placing 23rd on the one-meter board and 32nd on the three-meter board. For her outstanding performances throughout the season, Proehl was also named Big 12 Diver of the Week twice. Campbell led the Jayhawks to an exceptional 2008-09 campaign, securing an 11-3 record. The team shattered nine school records, including all five relay records, during the season. Kansas had 18 swimmers and divers named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Team, with six Jayhawks maintaining perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Three Jayhawks qualified for the NCAA Championships, including freestyle swimmer Maria Mayrovich, backstroke standout Kuzhil and diver Erin Mertz. Campbell coached Mayrovich to a 20th- place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, 21st in the 200-yard freestyle and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle. 200-yard breaststroke events. Herrmann set Kansas all-time records in all three of her NCAA-swum events, while also capturing two of the four Robinson Natatorium records. Mayrovich contributed to Kansas’ home pool records, shattering the last two Robinson Natatorium records in the 100 and 200-yard free events. For her performances, Mayrovich was named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week, Nov. 8. In addition to an emphasis on academics and athletics, Campbell and the Jayhawks placed an importance on community service. For her community service efforts, Proehl was named to the Big 12 Winter Good Works team. Mertz joined Mayrovich and Proehl as the three Jayhawks to receive Big 12 individual accolades when Mertz received Big 12 Diver of the Week Feb. 20 for her first-place finishes on the one and three-meter boards against Iowa State the previous week. Campbell coached Short to the 200-yard Kansas backstroke record following her record-breaking stint at the Big 12 Championships where she also broke the 100-yard backstroke record and was a member of the 200 and 400-yard record-breaking medley relay teams. Continuing the high academic standards set forth by the Kansas coaching staff, the Jayhawks placed 16 swimmers and divers on the Academic All-Big 12 teams, with 14 on the first team (3.2+ GPA) and two on the second team(3.0-3.19 GPA) during the 2006-07 season. In addition, the Jayhawks attained the highest GPA of all Kansas athletics teams during the spring 2006 semester, accumulating a 3.39 GPA. Campbell completed his fourth year at Kansas with an 8-2 dual meet record and a perfect 3-0 mark in Big 12 competition. He also recorded his 100th career win during the 2005-06 season and coached the Jayhawks to a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships. Kansas set four school records and had had six swimmers qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Jayhawks jumped into the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Top-25 Poll for the first time since 1997, an outstanding honor for both Campbell and the team. The Jayhawks accepted Academic All-America team honors for the second year in a row. Their team GPA of 3.26 during the fall semester placed them first within the Big 12 Conference. Fourteen Jayhawks were selected as Academic All-Big 12 First Team honorees. Two Jayhawks received second team accolades. As an Academic All-America team, Kansas repeated its outstanding performance in the classroom during the spring semester, improving its team GPA to 3.39. The achievement placed the Jayhawks 22nd highest among all Division I swimming and diving programs and first within the Big 12 Conference. The swimming and diving team also recorded the highest GPA among all athletic teams at the University of Kansas. Seven Jayhawk swimmers were selected Academic AllAmerican honorable mention. Under Campbell, freshman Ashley Leidigh earned Academic All-American status for her accomplishments, both academically and athletically, during the spring semester. Leidigh made her first appearance at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., competing in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly.

In Campbell’s first four seasons, the swimming and diving program produced two Senior ScholarAthletes of the Year in Gwen Haley and Amy Gruber. Career Before Kansas Campbell, the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year, led several athletes to success at the national level and helped the Evansville program reach new heights. Impressively, the Purple Eagles established school records in all 19 men’s and women’s events while Campbell was at the helm of the program in 1998. Those top marks included 12 Missouri Valley Conference records. During his four-year tenure at Evansville, his squads were named Academic All-America by the CSCAA all eight semesters. Prior to his appointment at Evansville, Campbell served as an assistant men’s coach at the University of Minnesota from 1995-98. During his time in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers captured Big Ten Conference titles in 1996 and 1998 while earning top-15 finishes all three years at the NCAA Championships. Campbell served as the head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at West Virginia Wesleyan from 1993-95 and directed that school into a top 10-NAIA program in just two years. He was named the NAIA Swimming Coach of the Year in 1995. Outside of the Pool Campbell competed as a professional triathlete for seven years before his coaching career began. After turning professional at the age of 19, he became one of the most consistent top-10 finishers on the pro circuit. During his career, Campbell was self-coached. He was the 1986 National Long Course Champion and the 1990 runner-up at the United States Triathlon Series National Championship. Campbell received a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas in 1993, and a Master’s in physical education/coaching from West Virginia University in 1995.

During the 2004-05 season, the Jayhawk swimmers had 16 entries into KU’s top-five record books. Two swimmers, Amy Gruber and Jenny Short, qualified for the 2005 NCAA Championships. Campbell’s team not only performed well in the pool, but also in the classroom. Jenny Short, Jackie Krueger, Lindsey Urbatchka and Terri Schramka were all honored by the CSCAA as Academic All-Americans for the 2004-05 season. Eric Elliott Diving Coach Eighth Season • 2008 Big 12 Championship Coach of the Meet Diving coach Eric Elliott enters his eighth year at Kansas with head coach Clark Campbell and assistant coach Jen Fox, looking to rise above the diving competition within Kansas’ Zone D. Career at Kansas (2005-2011) Under Elliott’s guidance, sophomore diver Christy Cash represented KU in the Zone D Diving Championships, where she finished 22nd in the platform (182.20), 30th in the one-meter (225.40) and 33rd on the three-meter (224.40). With Elliott’s assistance, Cash also had career-best performances during the 2010-11 season in three events: one meter, 272.25, three meter, 246.90, and platform, 225.60. Divers Taylor Ilten and Alyssa Golden also recorded career-best scores in the one-meter and three-meter dives during the 2010-11 season. Elliot helped diver Meghan Proehl reach the 2010 NCAA Championships with her outstanding performances throughout the 2009-10 season. Proehl set career-highs on both the one-meter (299.97 points) and three-meter (303.38) boards. She was named Big 12 Diver of the Week for her accomplishments. Both Proehl and diver Allison Ho were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams for their performances in the classroom. During the 2008-09 season, Elliot coached All-American diver Erin Mertz at the Zone D Diving meet with a seventh-place finish on the one-meter board. She became the first Jayhawk to earn All-America status since Kristin Nilsen accomplished the feat in 1998 with her 15th-place performance in the 200-yard bre a s t s t ro k e . Mertz was the first KU diver to earn the honor since Michelle Rojohn won the three-meter diving event in 1996. Then-senior Shelby Noonan, junior Jenny Roberts and freshman Meghan Proehl represented Kansas at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships at the Jamail Texas Swim Center March 2-4 on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Texas. Noonan, Roberts and Proehl all placed in the top-20 in their respective events. Noonan reeled in an eighth-place finish on the one-meter board and a 12thplace finish in the three-meter competition. In early 2006 competition, Noonan, Roberts and Proehl swept first, second and third in the one-meter diving competition in the double-dual meet against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State following their domination against the University of Northern Iowa, where the trio qualified for the Zone D Championships at the third meet on the Jayhawks schedule. Later in the season, under the instruction of Elliott, Noonan reeled in Big 12 co-diver of the week accolades for her performance at the Terrapin Cup Invitational. She finished second on both the one-meter board (255.30) and threemeter board (275.85) in that meet. In addition to success on the diving board, the Kansas divers excelled in the classroom. Sophomore Hannah McMacken and Roberts were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, posting a GPA of 3.2 or higher, while Noonan reeled in second team accolades, posting a GPA between 3.0-3.19. During the 2005-06 season, Elliott had three Jayhawks qualify for the Zone D Diving Championships in Columbia, Mo. Senior Robyn Karlage, Noonan, and senior Casey Topol scored honors in the top 25 in the one-meter competition. In three-meter competition, Karlage, Noonan, and Topol all placed in the top 30. Under Elliott, Noonan led the 2005-06 team to first-place finishes against Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa State and Drury. She also earned a fourth-place finish at the Minnesota Invitational, where the swimming and diving team placed third. Career Before Kansas Elliott joined the Jayhawks for the 2004-05 season after one year as the head diving coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to coaching at Louisiana-Monroe, he was a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Georgia diving team and started an agegroup program with Dan Laak in 1995 in Athens, Ga. In eight years with the diving program, he coached divers that reached the Junior National finals and who represented the Junior U.S. Diving team in international competitions. Elliott began his coaching career at Upper Marion High School in Pennsylvania before being named the head diving coach at Old Dominion University from 1993-94 and Virginia Tech from 1994-95. A native of Alexandria, Va., Elliott was an accomplished diver himself. He earned high school All-American diving honors at Mount Vernon High School and NCAA Division II All-American honors at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Chester with a secondary education degree with an emphasis in history in 1992.

Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator Ninth Season As a former Jayhawk swimmer, assistant coach Jen Fox will embark on her ninth year at Kansas alongside head coach Clark Campbell and diving coach Eric Elliott. In addition to her duties as an assistant coach, Fox serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Jayhawks. Career at Kansas (2003-2011) Fox’s leadership helped KU compile a 10-5 record in dual competition during the 2010-11 season and a 2-1 mark in the Big 12. Under her guidance, senior swimmer Iuliia Kuzhil represented KU at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, where she competed in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. Collaboratively with Campbell and Elliott, Fox assisted in leading Kansas to a 9-4 dual record during the 2009-10 season. KU had two representatives at the NCAA Championships, one Honarble mention All-American and 13 swimmers and divers named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 teams. Fox helped lead the Jayhawks to a successful 2008-09 campaign, securing an 11-3 record. The team shattered nine school records, including all five relay records, during the season. Kansas had 18 swimmers and divers named to the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 team, with six Jayhawks maintaining perfect 4.0 grade point averages. During the 2007-08 season, Fox assisted in leading the Jayhawks to a winning 7-2 dual meet record, capping the season off with a fourth-place finish at the 2008 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. Under Campbell, Fox and Elliott, 17 swimmers and divers were named to the Swimming and Diving Academic All-Big 12 team, the most of all schools in the conference. The Jayhawks collaboratively shattered four Robinson Natatorium records, five Kansas alltime records and 14 records in opponents’ pools for a grand total of 23 broken records for the Kansas swimmers and divers on the impressive 2007-08 season.

Fox assisted in guiding the 2006-07 Jayhawks to one of their most successful seasons yet, including a third-place finish at the Big 12 Conference Championships, which marked the second time in four seasons that Kansas accomplished the feat. That team broke eight Kansas records on the season, seven at the 2007 Big 12 Championships meet and one at the NCAA Championships, in addition to the 12 Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium records established by Kansas swimmers in Gambier, Ohio, at the Nike CupKenyon Invitational in December 2006. Fox returned to KU in 2003 to take the position of assistant coach and Head Recruiting Coordinator under Campbell. She was a student assistant under former KU head coach Cathy Burgess during the 2000-01 season. She graduated from KU in 2001 with a general studies degree in communications. Swimming Career at KU (1996-2000) Former head coach and assistant athletic director Gary Kempf recruited Fox to swim for Kansas. Fox competed in the backstroke and the freestyle events. She was a seven-time scorer at the Big 12 Championships during her tenure as an athlete at KU from 1996-2000. After graduation, the Mansfield, Ohio, native, joined the full-time staff of Athletes in Action. Athletes in Action is a Christian-based sports group that helps student-athletes throughout the country. AIA sent her to the University of Virginia where she became a volunteer assistant under head coach Mark Bernardino and worked with the men’s and women’s swimming t e a m s . Danielle Herrmann Volunteer Assistant Coach Second Season Former Jayhawk standout Danielle Herrmann enters her second season as a volunteer assistant for head coach Clark Campbell and his 2011-12 squad. She began her coaching career at KU in the same capacity for the 2010-11 campaign.

past March, earned her a trip to the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. next summer. In August 2011, during Nationals in Palo Alto, Calif., Herrmann finished with two of the top five fastest times on her team, as she and senior Stephanie Payne held all five spots.

As a swimmer for KU, she still holds the school records in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley. The Itasca, Ill. native was also a member of the record-holding 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays.

Herrmann is currently in pharmacy school and working on a degree in exercise science.

Throughout her four-year tenure, Herrmann represented KU at the NCAA Championships twice, and collected 10 top-three finishes at the Big 12 Championships. She served as team captain for both her junior and senior campaigns. Outside the pool, Herrmann was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team three times for her work in the classroom. Student Assistant Coach First Season Former Jayhawk breaststroke and butterfly specialist Joy Bunting enters her first season as a student assistant coach for coach Clark Campbell and the 2011-12 Kansas swimming and diving team.

Clark Campbell. “Her presence as a leader and coach will help our athletes get better because Joy has the ability to develop our team in and out of the water.”

Bunting completed her four year swimming career at the Big 12 Championships in February 2011, where she tallied 43 total points for the Jayhawks, including a career-best time of 2:02.58 in the 200 butterfly.

“Joy brings a lot of enthusiasm, heart and energy to this program,” assistant coach Jen Fox said. “I can’t wait to start working with her on deck.”

She made an immediate impact on the program during her freshman season as she earned Newcomer of the Year honors and the Karen Dionne award for Most Inspirational swimmer. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team on numerous occasions and was honored by KU following her final season with the 2011 Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics as part of The University of Kansas Women's Recognition Program.

Bunting plans to graduate in May 2012, with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

Volunteer Diving Assistant Coach First Season Ryan Meeker enters his first season as a volunteer assistant diving coach for Eric Elliott and the Jayhawks. Meeker had a successful collegiate diving career at Missouri, where he was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Zone “D” Diving Championships and competed in them during the 2007-08 season. Meeker was also an eight-time finalist during the Big 12 Championships during his four-year career.

Bernadette Gray-Little University Chancellor Third Year at Kansas (2009 - Present)

A highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the University of Kansas on August 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park and Wichita in addition to research and educational centers in Topeka, Hutchinson, Parsons and elsewhere in the state. She succeeds Robert Hemenway, who served as KU chancellor for 14 years. Chancellor Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, Gray-Little rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, executive associate provost, senior associate dean for undergraduate education for the college and chair of the Department of Psychology. In these roles, she earned a reputation as a superb fundraiser, a relationship builder, a strong advocate for faculty and for research and a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from St. Louis University. Her postdoctoral research in cross-cultural psychology was funded by a fellowship from the Fulbright Foundation for study in Denmark. She has also been a Social Science Research Council Fellow and a recipient of a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Her research falls primarily into three areas, two of which reflect a continuing interest in the relation of social and cultural factors to personality and psychopathology. First, she has studied the relevance of the client and clinician’s ethnic/racial membership to the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorder. The second area concerns the social determinants of self-esteem and is manifest in research on factors associated with self-esteem in children and adolescents of varied ethnic groups. In a third area of research she has explored the association of relationship satisfaction to the decision-making and influence strategies used by couples in intimate relationships.

Sheahon Zenger Athletics Director Second Year at Kansas (2011 - Present)

Dr. Sheahon (SHAY-un) Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and studentathletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger comes to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISU’s Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements has also been secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high grade-point averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a best-ever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last five years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-five finishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of top-five finishers in league history. After playing football at Fort Hays State and MidAmerican Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success.

Athletic Director’s Profile It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from then-KU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels.

Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association.

While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specifically football. ‘Involved’ may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-then-thriving magazine.

He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

Debbie Van Saun Sr. Associate AD/Sr. Woman Administrator

Fifth Year at Kansas Debbie Van Saun joined the Kansas Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director and Senior Women’s Administrator in August 2007. In July, 2011, Van Saun was named Senior Associate Athletics Director.

1979 and concluded when she came to KU in 2007.

At Kansas, Van Saun directly supervises selected sports and provides administrative guidance to those coaches and their programs. Those selected sports include women’s basketball, rowing, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, and swimming and diving. She works closely with studentathletes regarding financial aid, housing, summer school, fifth-year aid and other pertinent areas. It is Van Saun’s responsibility to monitor Kansas Athletics’ efforts to comply with Title IX and NCAA gender equity principles as well as monitor NCAA governance issues and contribute to the University’s position on new NCAA legislation.

Her husband, Paul, played varsity football for KU in the 1970’s and now owns Van Saun Decorating Service in Lawrence. They have two adult children, Kristen Van Saun Toner, a 2006 graduate of KU Law School, an attorney with Lathrop & Gage, LLP, and Joseph, who has a Masters in Accounting from KU and is a CPA with Harvard Management Co. Inc.

Van Saun came to KU from the City of Lawrence, where she served in numerous positions: as assistant city manager, assistant utilities director, assistant finance director and collections supervisor. Her roles with the City date back to

Van Saun earned two degrees from KU, a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in Public Administration.

Eric Sparks Team Manager First Season

Eric Sparks enters his first season as team manager for Kansas swimming and diving team. Sparks will be working the computers and taking splits for coaches on an meet-by meet basis during the 2011-12 season. The Topeka, Kan. native is a senior at KU, who previously swam for Towson University (Md.), before transferring to Kansas following his sophomore year. Sparks attended Topeka High School, where he swam for four years and was also a member of the Topeka Swim Association. The Biology major plans to graduate in the spring of 2013.

Iuliia Kuzhil qualified for the 2011 NCAA Championships and sophomore Christy Cash represented the Jayhawks at the Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships, both in Austin, Texas during another strong campaign for head coach Clark Campbell and his Jayhawks. The team’s 10 wins marked the second time in three years KU has posted double-digit victory totals, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons, when the Kansas women won a combined 24 meets. Kansas began the regular season in Tucson at the Arizona Duals, where they dropped meets to Arizona State (157-105), Arizona (178-84) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (131.5-128.5). Sophomore Rebecca Swank shined in the desert, placing third in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, while seniors Iuliia Kuzhil and Joy Bunting also took third place in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM respectively. After being edged out by rival Missouri during their first Big 12 Conference meet of the young season, the Jayhawks returned to Robinson Natatorium for their first home meet. KU improved their record to 2-4 in dual competition with wins over visiting Drury (189-108) and North Dakota (195-119). Senior Iuliia Kuzhil broke her Robinson record in the 200-yard backstroke with her 1:58.44 time, while seniors Joy Bunting and Brittany Potter, sophomore Monica Johannessen as well as freshman Alison Lusk all came in first in their respective events. Sophomore Taylor Ilten joined her swimming counterparts in the winner’s circle as she placed first in the one-meter dive

“This was our best fall invite in eight years,” Campbell said. “The team really rose to the challenge and performed at a very high level. It does set us up very well for the rest of the season.” Campbell’s words would prove to be true as his crew would head to the sunshine state during the New Year to take part in two different competitions. KU first participated in the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, where they would win 11 of 12 events en route to totaling 297.5 points, defeating George Mason (87), Vermont (68.5) and Florida International (65). “We were honored by the Orange Bowl Committee for the invitation, and swimming as well as we did, made the meet extra special,” a satisfied Coach Campbell said following the classic.” Just two days later, KU would show their dominance in the pool yet again, surging past 22nd ranked LSU (124-92), American University (159-48) and Florida International University (151-67) in Miami to push their dual meet record to 5-4. Sophomore Rebecca Swank led the Crimson and Blue as she placed first in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1000 freestyle events. The Jayhawk women would conclude their early January road trip with a win over Vanderbilt (182-75), in Tennessee to improve to 6-4 in dual meet competition. A total of nine different swimmers would win 11 different events, including senior Iuliia Kuzhil and freshman Alison Lusk, who both won two apiece.

“This was a really good meet and it seems like we are gaining more momentum every week,” Coach Campbell said after the meet. “We have improved since the Missouri dual. It’s kind of tough to come off a rivalry meet and then do well two weeks later, so I’m really pleased about where we are.” Next up for the ‘Hawks was the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, where a total of 12 swimmers and divers scored points for their team. Junior Shannon Garlie tallied the most points for her school, netting 16 during the 1650 freestyle. KU finished with a grand total of 371, which put them in fifth place for the Invitational. Senior Iuliia Kuzhil rose to the occasion, posting a 1:54.43 time in the 200 backstroke, which earned her an invite the NCAA Championships.

2010-11 Team

Season Review

2010-11 Season in Review After dropping their first home meet of 2011 to No. 18 Arkansas (170-130), Kansas would bounce back with a victory over exiting Big 12 Conference foe Nebraska. The Jayhawks would leave Lincoln with a 180.5-114.5 win and a 7-5 dual meet record. Kuzhil and Lusk again won two events apiece, while another seven Jayhawks would claim one at least one first place finish. KU returned to Robinson Natatorium for their next dual meet, where they again showed their command of their home pool, with victories against Northern Iowa (161-91) and South Dakota (165.5-89.5). The Jayhawks won 14-of-16 events in the double-dual as three Crimson and Blue swimmers finished first in at least two events. “We have trained and raced very well over the last three weeks, so now we just have to keep it going and get ready for Conference,” Coach Campbell said after his team’s eighth and ninth victory of the dual-meet season. Senior weekend in Lawrence would be special this year as Campbell’s squad would welcome in the visiting Cyclones of Iowa State for the final dual meet of the season. The program would say so long to five seniors (Joy Bunting, Iuliia Kuzhil, Amanda Maez, Alyssa Potter and Brittany Potter), as it looked to notch its tenth victory in dual competition of the 2010-11 season. The seniors would not disappoint as Bunting and Kuzhil both won events in their final home meet. Collectively, KU took seven out of eight events from the Cyclones and finished the regular season with a 10-5 dual meet mark, with a 2-1 record against Big 12 opponents.

Out of the pool and inside of the classroom, the swimming and diving team performed equally as well as they compiled a combined 3.21 GPA for the fall 2010 semester, which was the fourth highest of any team in the Kansas athletic program. They were also given the 2011 Scholar All-America Team award for their 3.15 GPA during the spring 2011 semester by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Twin sister swimmers, Alyssa and Brittany Potter were inducted into Rho Chi, a national academic honor society for pharmacy following the 2010-11 season and senior Joy Bunting was named the 2011 Outstanding Woman Student in Athletics. While four of the five seniors from KU’s 2010-11 class will be leaving the program, Joy Bunting will be staying on with the team as a student assistant coach for the 2011-12 season. Bunting will graduate in May 2012, with a bachelor’s in communication studies. “Joy brings a lot of enthusiasm, heart and energy to this program,” assistant coach Jen Fox said. “I can’t wait to start working with her on deck.”

After the meet, Coach Campbell was complimentary of his senior class. “I have been coaching for 18 years and this is one of the best senior classes I ever had the pleasure of working with,” he said. “All five of them brought something unique to the program to make it a lot better.” At the 2011 NCAA Championships, also in Austin, senior Iuliia Kuzhil competed in two different events, the 100 yard backstroke, where she finished 34th (53.89) as well as the 200 back where she placed 41st with a time of 1:57.93. Not to be outdone by her swimming counterparts, sophomore diver Christy Cash represented KU at the Zone ‘D’ Diving Championships in the Lone Star State. Cash finished in 22nd place in the platform dive (182.20), 30th in the one-meter (225.40) and 33rd from three meters with her 224.40 score.
