women’s 2012 outlook

Women’s Preview

Hopes are high for the 2012 KU women’s cross country team. The Jayhawk women feature 15 returners with only four departures and look to improve upon back-to-back seventh-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships. “Our goal this year is to have a really strong front five,” said assistant cross country coach Michael Whittlesey. “We don’t have a clear cut No. 1 like we’ve had the last few years, but we have four or five runners that could easily have a breakout season and become that leader for us.” Replacing All-Region runners Rebeka Stowe and Kara Windisch is the task at hand for coaches Stanley Redwine and Whittlesey. Fortunately for the KU coaches, Kansas has an incoming pool of talent as well as experienced runners ready to fill the gaps. “This year we lost our top two from last season, which were both significant loses,” said Whittlesey. “But we are excited about the great leadership we should get from this year’s senior class.” Tessa Turcotte, Kyra Kilwein, Kathleen Thompson and Devin Wiegers make up a strong and experienced senior class that could lead the KU women to their first NCAA Championships since 1994. Tucotte and Kilwein have been constants in the KU top five over the past two seasons and will need to join forces with the Jayhawk underclassmen if they are to bring the women’s team back to the top of the Big 12. Junior Natalie Becker returns after an injury-riddled sophmore campaign and will try to return to the women’s top three, where she was a mainstay as a redshirt freshman. The St. Louis, Mo., native showed glimpses of greatness early in her career and the Jayhawk women will need her to return with high expectations if they are to find success in 2012.

Liza Tauscher and Ragan Allen made a splash as freshmen and look to do more of the same this year. Both competed at the Big 12 Championships last season and ran in over half of KU’s meets. Their experienece will be a welcome addition to a squad the will see 10 true and redshirt freshmen suit up for KU this year. “We brought in a big nucleus of six freshmen and I feel any one of them could have an impact this year,” continued Whittlesey. “We have some other girls that we redshirted last year that have also done the job in the offseason and we’ll need to step up.” After sitting out their first years in Lawrence, Hayley Francis and Sara Siewald are coming off redshirt seasons where they picked up the all-important first season to get acclimated to the college ranks. All have been among the leaders in early season workouts and could easily have an impact in 2012. The incoming freshmen are possibly the most exciting aspect of this season’s squad. Making up the highly touted group are Hannah Richardson, Lynn Robinson, Jasmine Edwards, Kennedy Schneider and Julia Dury, All of whom have been seen numerous races at their respective state championship levels. The group will pile on more depth and could easily be apart of the women’s lead pack come season’s end. With such a young and talented group making up the majority of this season’s roster, the future looks bright for the Kansas women’s cross country team. “Our goal is always to put ourselves up high in the conference and try to get a NCAA bid,” conlcuded Whittlesey. “You have to do that with a very strong front five and I think this team could have the depth to accomplish that.”

The Kansas men return all but two of the group that took part in the post -season meets last season making the 2012 team the most promising in the past five seasons. “I think this is the strongest team we’ve had in a number of years at KU,” said assistant cross country coach Michael Whittlesey. “That’s not just from a talent basis, but a commitment basis. Anyone from our 10th runner on up feels like they count and they’ve put in the hard work.”

However, it is the underclassmen who will determine how far the KU men will go this year. KU had two true freshmen, Reid Buchanan and Evan Landes, who made up the core of last year’s group and both are primed for several top finishes this season as sophomores. “Our returners this year have really stepped up,” said Whittlesey. “The commitment that our sophomores and freshmen from last year have put forth in the last 12 months has been tremendous. They’ve really stepped up their game.”

The KU men return a host of young but experienced runners from the 2011 campaign. Ten Jayhawks from a year ago will return this season, including fifth-year All-Big 12 senior Donny Wasinger, whose 2011 was cut short due to injury.

Several redshirt freshmen will also look to make an impact after sitting out in 2011. Logan Sloan, Philip Freeman, Alex Galli and Gabe Gonzalez will make this team a competitive one as each are capable of vying for spots in the men’s front pack.

“We did lose our top two runners from 2011 but we got a huge kick having Donny Wasinger back,” said Whittlesey. “His leadership and experience is what could move this team into that next level that we’ve been working toward.”

“We have a couple of freshmen that might have an impact this year but it’ll be tough to break through,” explained Whittlesey. “We have several guys that we redshirted last year that I do expect to be in our front five. Gabe Gonzalez is one of the big guys that we’re excited about.”

Wasinger was the Jayhawks’ top finisher in each race two seasons ago and ended his junior campaign with an appearance at the NCAA Championships. He’ll be joined by fellow seniors Josh Baden, Eric Dyson, Colin Jokisch, Kaman Schneider and Ben Wilson who make this year’s team the oldest and most experienced in years.

Redwine and Whittlesey continue to load the roster with a strong group of true freshmen including Colorado’s Gatorade Athlete of the Year, Ty Williams. Williams is joined by Brandon Messerly, Ben Brownlee and Kyle Snyder as those who led their respective high school teams to top finishes in their state championships.

Josh Munsch is the only junior on the team. The KU coaches are hoping he can carry over the success he found on the track last season, an appearance in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. If the Hays, Kan., native continues to improve the rate at which he has over his first two years in Lawrence, he could easily be the top Jayhawk in several meets this year.

“We’ve got four or five guys this year that believe they can push Donny and can run with Donny,” concluded Whittlesey. “His role of being the number one runner isn’t guaranteed. We expect him to be there but the great news is we’ve got four or five or six other guys that feel like they can be there and that is what will give us a great year with the men’s program.”

The Jayhawks once again pulled no punches when completing the 2012 schedule for the men’s and women’s cross country teams. KU will host two meets at its home course, Rim Rock Farm, for the first time since 2006 while both teams will again travel to Wisconsin for one of the largest and most competitive meets of the season, the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The postseason will feature several challenging courses leading up to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Louisville, Ky., and moving away from Terre Haute, Ind. for the first time since 2003. The 2012 season will once again kick off with the Bob Timmons Classic on Sept. 1 at the Jayhawks’ home course, Rock Farm. The KU men will try to make it 10-consecutive team victories, while the women attempt to claim their seventh team title in the last eight seasons. The NCAA Midwest Regional Championships will take place two weeks later on Nov. 9 at first-time host Missouri State’s MSU Cross Country Course. The KU women had two AllRegion performers a year ago, while the men saw three finish in the top 40. A strong performance at the Regional meet will hopefully give the men’s and women’s teams spots in the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17. The national meet will move away from Terre Haute, Ind., for the first time in nearly a decade when Louisville plays host at its home course, E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park. The men will attempt to send a team for the first time since 2006 and the women a team since their Midwest Regional Championships in 1994.

TRADITION OF KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY Cross country at Kansas has only mirrored the tradition of excellence the track and field program has enjoyed over the past century. Some of the country’s greatest distance and cross country runners have suited up in the Crimson and the Blue and have left an indelible mark on American running.

Great coaching minds such as Bill Easton and Bob Timmons helped develop some of the top distance runners in the U.S., and helped groom them for the track on the trails of the cross country courses. The Jayhawks were at the center of it all as collegiate cross country quickly grew in popularity through the 50’s and 60’s. Kansas runners won four of five individual national titles from 1950-54 and tacked on a team championship in 1953. Glenn Cunningham, Herb Semper, Wes Santee, Billy Mills, Al Frame, John Lawson and Jim Ryun all began their stellar track careers through cross country at KU. Since that great 30-year stretch when Kansas dominated the sport, while not to the same level, Jayhawk cross country has continued to turn out some legendary runners. Since 1994, KU has seen six Jayhawks be named All-Americans for their high finishes at the national meet. For the women, Julia Saul earning All-American honors in 1992 was the springboard that began the rise of the women’s program. Seven women have gone on to be named to all-conference teams, including Lauren Bonds and Rebeka Stowe, each of the last five years. More recently Kansas has returned to conference supremacy as from 2004-06, Benson Chesang and Colby Wissel combined for three-straight Big 12 titles. Coaches Stanley Redwine and Michael Whittlesey have the Jayhawks on an upward trend as two Jayhawks have qualified for the NCAA Championships in the past three seasons, Bonds (2009) and Donny Wasinger (2010).

KU’s School of Pharmacy ranks third in the nation for NIH research funding and fifth in nation in exam pass rates. KU’s Confucius Institute is ranked among top four in nation, top 20 in world. KU ranks ninth in the world in the rate of new patents issued. KU’s law school ranks 10th in nation for hands-on educational opportunities. When Forbes Magazine named the 100 most powerful women in the world, two KU graduates were in the top five. KU promotes a global education and ranks 11th in nation for study abroad participation and 25th in Peace Corps participation among large doctoral universities. KU has produced 25 Rhodes Scholars, more than all other Kansas universities combined. RIM ROCK FARM

The University of Kansas hosts its home cross country meets at historic Rim Rock Farm, northwest of Lawrence. Before being donated to KU in 2004, the property was owned by former head track and field and cross country coach Bob Timmons and has been the home of the Jayhawks since the 1974 season. Any runner or spectator will say that the course is quite challenging and unique. In addition to having two covered bridges as part of the course, Rim Rock Farm also features specific hills, turns and other landmarks that are named after former Jayhawk greats. Dispersed throughout the course are silhouette statues of seven legendary Jayhawk distance runners including Herb Semper, Al Frame, John Lawson and Olympians Billy Mills, Wes Santee, Glenn Cunningham and Jim Ryun. Rim Rock Farm was the vision of Coach Timmons, who, during his 23-year tenure, won two cross country conference championships. “There is something for everyone at Rim Rock Farm,” Timmons said. “Parents are afforded the opportunity to walk around throughout the course and find all the wonderful places to observe. Spectators can catch the runners three or four times throughout the event and explore the different elevations. And the runners can navigate a course that will challenge them with its obstacles and amaze them with its beauty. That’s what makes Rim Rock Farm so exciting.” In the fall of 2006, Rim Rock Farm played host to its first Big 12 Cross Country Conference Championships. Rim Rock Farm hosted the Big Eight Cross Country Championships in 1983, 1991 and 1995, and was also the site of the 1998 NCAA Division I and II Cross Country Championships as well as numerous Kansas high school state meets. Rim Rock Farm is home of the Jayhawks, but also home to former Kansas runner Steve Heffernan. After donating the course to KU, Timmons made sure that the cozy house in the middle of the farm had a full-time tenant. Heffernan is currently responsible for the farm’s upkeep, while also serving as head coach of cross country and track and field at Lawrence Free State High School.

The Student-Athlete Support Services staff focuses all collective resources in support of the academic, personal and interpersonal development of each individual it serves. As part of its commitment to the academic success of its athletes, Kansas Athletics completed a new academic complex in the summer of 2009. The facility features individual study rooms and a computer lab.

PHIL LOWCOCK, Ph.D. Director of Records Coordinator International Student-Athlete Support Dr. Phil Lowcock is in his 18th year with Kansas Athletics. He serves as the academic advisor for baseball, tennis and women’s cross country/ track & field. For the past 10 years he has been on a hiatus from working with cross country/track and is looking forward to retunring to the programs again this season. He also works to support all of KU’s international student-athletes with admissions, immigration and visa acquisition and transition to college courses. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member in the health, sport and excersice science department and lectures a class on campus every semester. Lowcock has been teaching at KU since 1984, when he began working as a graduate teaching assistant and doctoral student in the health, sport and exercise science department. He has attained three degrees, all from Kansas; bachelor’s and master’s in education in 1985 and 1989 and a doctorate in applied sport psychology and counseling psychology in 1992. The Kansas City, Kan., native is a graduate of Shawnee Missoin North and has a daughter, Megan, who is currently a sophomore in high school. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his daughter and their two dogs as well as rooting on the Jayhawks athletes whenever possible.

JULIA CUMMINGS Graduate Academic Counselor Julia Cumming graduated in the spring of 2012 after attaining a degree from Kansas in exercise science. The Overland Park, Kan., native was a five-year member of the women’s track team as a pole vaulter, competing for the Jayhawks in several Big 12 Championship meets as well as two NCAA Regional meet. She is engaed to Jordan Scott, who also pole vaulted for the Jayhawks from 2007-11.

KATIE MARTINCICH Academic Counselor Academic/Career Counseling

Katie Martincich is in her second year with Academic Support. She assists the cross country/track & field academic counselors with administrative and counseling responsibilities. Before she came to KU she worked at the Cerner Corporation in Kansas City. There, she worked as a programs coordinator as well as a business analyst. In 2009, Martincich earned bachelors’ degrees in both business marketing and sports and fitness management from KU. She is currently working towards a master’s in education while she works as a graduate student in the academic support offices. Martinchich was a four year letterwinner for the KU volleyball team from 2006-09 and was the recipient of the 2008 Big 12 Sportsman of the Year award, as well as the 2009 KU Women of Distinction Award. She also was named to the Academic All-Big 12 lists on numerous occasions. Originally from Shawnee, Kan., Martincich grew up with two older sisters Lisa (30) and Laura (28). In her spare time she coaches a club volleyball team in Kansas City. She enjoys hanging out with

lready a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Stanley Redwine is a living legend in Jayhawk country and one of the most well-respected coaches in the United States. A former All-American himself at the University of Arkansas, Redwine has coached 12 individual National Champions (10 at Kansas), 98 All-Americans (83 at KU), four Olympians (all at KU) and 22 National Championship teams between his years as head coach at Kansas and Tulsa and an assistant coach at Arkansas. Twenty twelve marked perhaps the most successful season in Redwine’s Kansas coaching career, mentoring the women’s team to numerous individual accolades with the most notable a NCAA runner-up finish in the Indoor Championships. Pupil Diamond Dixon not only claimed a national championship, four conference titles and four more All-American honors, but also won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London as part of the 4x400-meter relay team. In the summer of 2008 in Beijing, China, Redwine athletes Scott Russell and Nickesha Anderson represented their respective countries in the Games of the XXIX (29th) Olympiad. Russell finished in 10th place for Canada in the men’s javelin, while Anderson was an alternate on Jamaica’s women’s 4x100meter relay team. In 2010, Redwine mentored eight athletes to 10 All-America honors with five garnering the elite status during the indoor season and five more picking up the honor during the outdoor season. Behind NCAA Champion Jordan Scott’s performance, the KU men’s team finished seventh at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Scott claimed the pole vault title for the first time in his career. Freshman thrower Mason Finley took home second place in both the shot put and discus at the NCAA Outdoor meet and also earned indoor honors in the shot put. The KU women’s distance medley relay team earned All-America status at the NCAA Indoor Championships, while Lauren Bonds (1,500 meters), Andrea Geubelle (long jump) and Eric Fattig (triple jump) each were All Americans during the outdoor season. In 2008, Redwine coached 12 track and field All-Americans, the most he has coached in one season since he has been at Kansas. He oversaw Egor Agafonov to his second-consecutive National Championship in the weight throw, as well as his fifth and sixth All-America honors (weight throw, hammer throw) and his thirdconsecutive Big 12 Championship in both the hammer throw and the weight throw. In the 2008 indoor track and field season, Kansas was just one of 10 schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams finish in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, senior Crystal Manning (long jump and triple jump) and junior Nickesha Anderson (100 meters and 200 meters) each won two All-America honors. Only one other woman (Candace Mason) has accomplished the feat in KU history. As an athlete, Redwine placed his name in the Arkansas history books as a 400-meter, 600-yard and 800-meter runner from 1980-1983. Redwine was a four-time All-American and was named UA’s Outstanding Track Athlete all four of his years in Fayetteville. Redwine went on to spend nine years as an assistant coach at his alma mater. During his tenure, the Razorbacks captured nine consecutive NCAA Championships and 22 titles from 1985 to 1994 in both track and field and cross country. He helped produce 14 All-Americans and two NCAA Champions in hurdle and sprint events. Among those All-Americans were two-time 400-meter NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Calvin Davis, three-time 400-meter and 500-meter NCAA champion Robbie Haley, and seventime All-American sprinter Jimmy French. His success as an assistant earned him the head coaching position at the University of Tulsa in 1994. In six years at Tulsa, Redwine’s athletes broke more than 70 school records, most on multiple occasions. He produced 11 NCAA qualifiers and Tulsa’s first-ever All-American. On May 25, 2000, Redwine was rewarded for his efforts by being hired as the head coach at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks’ track and field program has prospered ever since, as he has restored the tradition of KU’s illustrious past. Professionally, Redwine retired from competition in 1996 after he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga. He was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier five-consecutive times from 1980 to 1996 and was a two-time silver medalist in the 800-meter run at the Goodwill Games in 1986 and 1994. He also won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 1983 and 1987. Redwine was also a World Championship team member in 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993 and a two-time U.S. 800-meter champion. Redwine earned his bachelor’s degree in administrative management from the University of Arkansas in 1985. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have three children: Crysta, Stanley Jr., and Alexa.

COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS • In Redwine’s first 12 seasons at Kansas, the men’s and women’s teams have combined to set more than 70 school records and have cracked the KU all-time top-five list in more than 60 events. As a result of their outstanding performances, Redwine’s 2001 and 2002 men’s track and field teams were enshrined into the KU Hall of Fame after back-to-back eighth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. • In 2012, Redwine mentored the women’s team to its highest ever finish at an NCAA meet, a second-place finish at the Indoor Championships. He also helped pupil Diamond Dixon to a gold medal at the London Olympics, the first gold medalist from Kansas since Al Oerter in 1968. • In 2010, Redwine guided eight different athletes to 10 All-America honors, led by Jordan Scott’s NCAA title in the pole vault. Freshman Mason Finley earned three All-America honors and was also named the Big 12 Track and Field’s Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year and the Midwest Region’s Field Athlete of the Year. Senior middle distance runner Lauren Bonds earned All-America honors both indoor and outdoor and was the first Kansas women’s cross country runner to compete at an NCAA Championship meet in more than 15 years. • In July of 2007, Redwine traveled to Rio de Janeiro as the men’s head track coach for Team USA at the Pan-American games. His athletes took home 20 medals, including three golds. It was the second time Redwine was selected to coach the team, as he also served as an assistant at the 2003 games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. • In 2006, the men’s cross country team recorded its best results at both the Big 12 Conference Championships and the NCAA Championships in more than a decade, finishing third and 12th, respectively. Redwine and his staff mentored six All-America performers in 10 events in track and field later that season. • In 2002, he produced eight Big 12 champions, 21 total NCAA qualifiers and two individual national champions. The men’s track team finished eighth in the nation during the indoor season, and then gave a fourth-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships before finishing 21st nationally. Redwine and his staff guided seven athletes to a total of eight All-America honors, while the men’s squad set four outdoor and seven indoor school records and one all-time collegiate record.

ichael Whittlesey is in his fourth season as assistant coach for cross country and middle distance/distance running at Kansas.

In his short time in Lawrence, Whittlesey has already made a huge impact with both the cross country and track programs. In his three seasons with the Jayhawks, he has guided two Jayhawks to appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Lauren Bonds, which was a first for a KU woman since the 1994 season, and Donny Wasinger, who was the first KU man to do so since 2007. Additionally, in 2010 the Kansas women’s distance medley relay team composed of Bonds, Rebeka Stowe, Cori Christensen and Taylor Washington earned All-America status at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. Whittlesey has mentored six Jayhawks to All-America honors on the track and has seen three of his athletes break school records (Lauren Bonds - Indoor mile, indoor 3,000m, outdoor 1,500m, outdoor 5,000m, Amanda Miller - Indoor 5,000m and Rebeka Stowe - 3,000m Steeplechase). Whittlesey’s most decorated Jayhawk, Stowe, was the 2012 Big 12 Champion in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, and also broke the school record on numerous occasions. She also earned First Team All-America honors at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships with her top 12 finishes in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase. Stowe was also a two-time All-Big 12 honoree on the cross country course. Whittlesey mentored Bonds to an outstanding 2010 senior season as she claimed the Big 12 Outdoor title in the 1,500 meters and went on to earn All-America honors by taking seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. En route to earning All-America honors, Bonds set a new KU record in the event with her time of 4:14.29. Bonds also had a fine year off the track as she was named an Academic All-American and was a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year. The 2010 cross country season featured junior Donny Wasinger advancing as an individual to the national championship meet. Both Kansas cross country teams finished seventh at the 2010 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. Whittlesey came to KU after serving 11 years as the assistant coach in charge of cross country and distance running for the track program at North Carolina. In addition to his coaching duties at UNC, Whittlesey worked as the assistant director for both men’s and women’s track and field and cross country for his last four seasons at UNC. Under his direction, North Carolina middle distance/distance produced nine NCAA champions in six years, 70 All-Americans and 36 conference champions. Whittlesey led the track team to back-to-back NCAA titles in the distance medley relay at the 2006 and 2007 Indoor NCAA Championships. Along with the 2007 distance medley relay title, Whittlesey coached sophomore anchor Brie Felnagle to the individual NCAA title in the outdoor 1,500 meters. Under the guidance of Whittlesey, Felnagle captured three NCAA titles and was named an All-American 10 times in her career.

Additionally, in his 11 years at the helm of the cross country program at UNC, the Carolina women’s team advanced to the NCAA Championships 10 times, including a program-best sixth-place finish in 1999. With a 10th-place finish in 2004, the Tar Heel women posted back-to-back top-10 NCAA finishes for the first time in school history. After assisting the Tar Heels to a fourth-place indoor finish and another top-10 outdoor finish and producing four NCAA individual and relay titles, Whittlesey was awarded the first-ever NCAA Division I Track and Field National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s middle distance/ distance in 2003. Whittlesey also received the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honor. On top of the great team success during Whittlesey’s tenure at UNC, the Tar Heels also witnessed some of the greatest individual distance athletes in school history during his term. Perhaps no other athlete thrived under Whittlesey more than Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan was the NCAA cross country champion in 2002 and 2003. Not only was Flanagan the first Carolina woman to ever take the cross country national championship, but she was only the third woman in NCAA history to successfully defend her title. A three-time recipient of the NCAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year award, Flanagan also excelled on the track. She won a pair of indoor national championships in 2003. Individually, she claimed the title in the 3,000 meters, and then teamed up with teammates Erin Donohue, Anissa Gainey and Alice Schmidt to take first-place honors in the distance medley relay. Flanagan also earned a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic 5,000 team before claiming a bronze medal in the 10,000 at the 2008 Olympic Games. Along with Flanagan, Whittlesey coached standout runner Alice Schmidt, who was a two-time national champion in the outdoor 800 and the first North Carolina track and field athlete to win an NCAA title in the same event twice. Both Schmidt and Flanagan went on to earn places on the 2005 U.S. Track and Field World Championship team, while Erin Donohue earned All-America status in both cross country and track. All three athletes earned spots on the 2007 U.S. Track and Field World Championship team, as well as the 2008 U.S. Olympic team. Whittlesey has twice won both the ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year and Southeast Region Coach of the Year awards, earning each in 1999 and 2003. A native of Morris, Conn., Whittlesey started his coaching career at UConn as a graduate assistant. While at UConn he assisted with distance and was a pole vault and multi-event coach. He then served two years at UNC-Charlotte where he worked as an assistant coach. While with the 49ers, Whittlesey led his athletes to 53 new school records in 18 different events and coached all-conference performers in the triple jump and javelin. Whittlesey’s competitive experience includes being the first American finisher in the 1995 Boston Marathon. He also qualified for the 1996 Olympic Trials in the marathon after competing as a non-recruited athlete at the University of Connecticut. He graduated from UConn in May 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine/athletic training and later earned a master’s in biophysical science/exercise physiology in 1993. In 1997, Whittlesey received a doctorate of philosophy in sports science/exercise physiology from UConn. Whittlesey and his wife, Carol, have two children: eight-year-old daughter Samantha and six-yearold son Ryan.

BERNADETTE GRAY-LITTLE Chancellor | Marywood College Fourth Year at Kansas

highly regarded scholar, teacher and university leader, Bernadette Gray-Little began her tenure as the 17th chancellor of the A University of Kansas on Aug. 15, 2009. As KU chancellor, Gray-Little is the chief executive officer of the university, overseeing campuses in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Salina and Wichita, as well as research and educational centers in Garden City,

administration

Hays, Parsons, Pittsburg, Topeka and Yoder.

Chancellor Gray-Little’s goals for KU include enhancing student achievement so that more KU students graduate in four years, as well as spurring more research and scholarly activities that enhance quality of life and create economic growth. During her service as chancellor she also has made it a point to meet with Kansans and with KU alumni throughout the state and nation to learn about their aspirations for the university. Gray-Little was one of four university leaders selected to represent the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities at a White House summit on math and science education in January 2010. She is also on the board of trustees for the Online Computer Library Center, an international organization dedicated to expanding public access to information and research. Gray-Little previously was executive vice chancellor and provost from 2006 to 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A professor of psychology, she rose to the post of UNC’s chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments, including dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research. A native of eastern North Carolina, Gray-Little received her bachelor’s degree from Marywood College in Scranton, Pa., and her master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from Saint Louis University. She earned a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Denmark. She also served as a Social Science Research Council Fellow and received a Ford Foundation Senior Scholar Fellowship through the National Research Council. Gray-Little is married to Shade Key Little, who was assistant dean for academic support services at UNC. They have two children and one grandchild.

SHEAHON ZENGER Athletics Director | Kansas State (1988) Second Year at Kansas

r. Sheahon Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KU’s Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesn’t mean, though, that he won’t be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For it’s his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger came to KU after serving for five years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he finished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His first college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyder’s staff at Kansas State as one of the nation’s youngest full-time football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his master’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSU’s associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA’s Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

Reviewing 2011 Despite neither team qualifying for the NCAA Championship in 2011, Kansas cross country had a solid season with 15 Jayhawks earning Academic All-Big 12 honors and the continued success of seniors Rebeka Stowe and Kara Windisch for the women and seniors Zach Zarda and Austin Bussing for the men’s team.

Before the season even began, the men’s team got a devastating blow when senior Donny Wasinger was injured and would be forced to sit out the entire season. Wasinger had been the top finisher in every race he had competed in the previous two years, leaving some large shoes to fill by his teammates Despite the loss the KU men started off the season with two team wins. At the Bob Timmons Classic, the Jayhawks won with Zarda taking the individual title with a time of 19:11.30. In their first races in Kansas singlets, redshirt freshman James Wilson and true freshman Evan Landes placed fifth and sixth, respectively, completing the men’s top three scorers.

The women finished second as a team in the season’s first meet with junior Allie Marquis coming in as the team’s top finisher, placing fourth with a time of 19:44.60.

Both teams then traveled to Columbia, Mo., to take on rival Missouri at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge at the A.L. Gustin Golf Course. In her season debut, Stowe didn’t disappoint, claiming the 5K victory in a time of 17:43.93. Her teammate Windisch finished just 11 seconds later to place second. The duo’s finishes helped the KU women claim their first team victory of the year. The team win was also the first for the Kansas women in the 19-year history of the event. For her efforts, Stowe was named the Big 12’s Runner of the Week. The announcement made Stowe just the second Jayhawk woman to earn the distinction and first since 2008. While no runners were able to win the 8K race on the men’s side, the Jayhawks dominated the team competition, winning by 21 points over the Tigers. KU saw seven of its runners finish in the top nine, which included the Jayhawks’ top finisher, Wilson, who placed second with a time of 26:54.35. In their first competition of the year, Bussing and sophomore Josh Munsch finished just 12 seconds later at third and fourth, respectively.

Zach Zarda

In the first big meet of the season, the men and women ventured to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course. The men finished 15th with Zarda leading the group for the second time in 2011. The Shawnee, Kan., native finished 38th out of over 200 runners in a race where the top 50 finishers were separated by just two minutes. On the women’s side, Stowe had another great outing finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th place with a time of 20:58.90. The women’s 6K featured 272 runners with four Jayhawks placing in the top100. Windisch was once again the second KU runner to cross the finish, placing 37th in 21:31.60. The women’s squad finished 14th with an average time 21:53. After three meets in four weeks the Jayhawks got a two-week break before traveling across town to the Haskell Invitational at Haskell Indian Nations University. While the numbers were small for both the men’s and women’s teams, the runners participating had solid outings. For the men, redshirt freshman Brendan Soucie had his best outing as a Jayhawk, claiming fourth in an 8K time of 26:21.21. On the women’s side, junior Devin Wiegers was the overall runner-up, completing the 5K in 19:29.

SEASON REVIEW Kansas got one final tune-up before the postseason meets when it headed north for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., at the Thomas Zimmerman Championship Course. The meet was once again a large one with over 300 runners competing on 40 teams in each of the men’s and women’s races.

Stowe was the top finisher for the KU women, who finished 37th in the team standings. Stowe placed 37th and completed the 6K in 20:50.20.

The Jayhawks then saw two weeks off before the Big 12 Championships. In the off time the league announced that 15 Jayhawks, nine men and six women, were members of the Big 12’s All-Academic team. The number marked the most Kansas honorees in the conference’s history.

At the end of October the men and women traveled to College Station, Texas for the conference championships held at the Pebble Creek Country Club. Stowe notched the best finish of her career, coming in at seventh in a 6K time of 19:52.3. The finish earned her All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight year and was the highest place for a KU female in Big 12 history. Windisch was just two spots from also claiming all-conference honors, but took 17th in a personal best time of 20:24.7. The senior duo’s finishes propelled the women to a seventh-place finish with 169 points. The men also took seventh in College Station, with Bussing leading the team for the second straight meet. The Houston native finished in 22nd to mark his highest-career finish at the conference meet, crossing the finish line in an 8K time of 24.22.5. Zarda, Josh Baden, Wilson and freshman Reid Buchanan placed nine seconds apart to place 43rd, Austin Bussing 45th, 48th and 49th , respectively, to complete the men’s top five scorers. In the final meet of the season, the Jayhawks saw themselves amongst a competitive field at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships in DeKalb, Ill. The men, running in their first 10K of the season had another solid team performance with the top three finishers placing within six spots of one another. Bussing was the top KU finisher in his final race as a collegian, traversing Northern Illinois’ North 40 Course in 32:07.40, finishing 32nd. Backing him up once again were Zarda, Baden, Munsch and Buchanan, who each finished in the top 60 and propelled the men to an eighth-place finish to end the year. A pair of seniors ended their KU careers on a high note as both Stowe and Windisch ran their way to All-Region honors in Dekalb. Stowe finished the 6K in 21:38.86 with Windisch right behind at 21:39.61 to place 20th and 21st, respectively. The finishes marked just the second time in the Stanley Redwine era two Jayhawks claimed spots on the AllRegion squad. Junior Tessa Turcotte and senior Cori Christensen were the next two KU finishers, completing their season with 64th and 72nd place finishes. The women went on to accumulate 255 points to finish ninth overall.

ew collegiate cross country and track programs have the hertiage and tradition the Kansas program bestowes. Mount Oread has been home to some of the greatest distance runners and coaches in the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and has been at the center of the evolution of cross country and track and field over the past century. The Jayhawk program has seen 27 All-Americans, 15 conference champions, five national champions and five future Olympians suit up in the Crimson and Blue as well as two legendary coaches who are now enshrined in numerous Hall of Fames around the country. Former American and world record holders such as Jim Ryun, Wes Santee and Billy Mills each kicked off their legendary running careers in Lawrence and have joined throngs of other KU men and women who have established Kansas cross country as a tradition-rich national power.

Benson Chesang (2003-06)

When ranking Kansas runners in the modern era, Benson Chesang is an easy selection for the top of the list. The Kenya native won the Big 12 Championships two straight years, the first KU runner to do so since 1954-55, when John Lawson won back-to-back conference titles. Chesang was just the fifth man in school history to run in three NCAA Championship meets and recorded the highest KU finish in the 2004 meet (seventh) since Brent Steiner took seventh in 1984. His finish at the NCAA meet CHESANG’S ACCOLADES in 2004 earned him All-American honors, the first KU male to do so in 20 years. During his four years in Lawrence, Chesang was a three-time All-conference and allregion selection and was the team’s top runner all but one year of his Kansas career. In 2005 he helped the men’s team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, the Jayhawks’ best result at nationals since 1989.

Glenn Cunningham (1931-33) One of the earliest cross country greats to don the Crimson and Blue was Glenn Cunningham. A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Cunningham was a two-time Big Six Conference cross country champion, capturing the league crown in 1931 and 1932.

CUNNINGHAM’S ACCOLADES

Cunningham also excelled in track and field while at Kansas, breaking the world record in the indoor 1,500 meters (3:53.3) in 1934 and both the indoor mile (4:08.4) in 1932 and the outdoor mile (4:06.7) in 1933. During his tenure on the track at KU, he served as team captain in 1934 and won 12 conference championships: four indoor (1932-34, mile run and 1934, 880-yard run) and eight outdoor (1932-34, mile run; 1932-34, 880-yard run; 1933-34, two-mile run). In 1932 and 1933, Cunningham was the NCAA champion in the mile run, earning All-America accolades in the process. A two-time Olympian in the 1,500 meters (1932 and 1936), Cunningham won the silver medal at the 1936 summer games in Berlin. Bill Easton (1948-65) In a career that spanned three decades, Bill Easton built a reputation as one of the nation’s best track and field coaches. Before coming to Kansas in 1948, Easton won three-straight cross country NCAA Championships with Drake University while also serving as the meet director for the Drake Relays. At Kansas, Easton’s teams were always near the top of the conference. His cross country teams won 15 conference championships and never finished worse than second in his 18 years as coach. He won conference titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track for eight consecutive years. The first highlight of Easton’s Jayhawk career came in 1953 when his cross country team won the NCAA Championship. He later won the 1959 and 1960 outdoor men’s track and field titles.

Easton coached 32 All-Americans including Wes Santee, Herb Semper, Al Frame, Billy Mills and John Lawson. In track and field, he mentored Olympic champions Bill Nieder and Al Oerter. All together, Easton coached eight Olympians. His KU athletes set 14 intercollegiate records, seven NCAA records, 14 American records, four Olympic records and four world records. He is a member of seven different halls of fame, including the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Al Frame (1952-55) Al Frame carved out an impressive cross country and track and field career while attending the University of Kansas. A member of the 1953 NCAA championship team, Frame won the individual NCAA championship in 1954. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Easton, Frame was a member of three Big Seven Conference championship teams while at KU. He also won two Big Seven individual championships, netting the accomplishment in back-to-back years (1954 and 1955) and was the last Jayhawk to do so until Benson Chesang won the Big 12 Championship in consecutive years (2004 and 2005).

A 1954 and 1955 All-America honoree, Frame, like so many before him, also found success on the track and field team. During his time on the team, Frame captured six Big Seven Conference championships: four indoor (1954, two-mile run; 1955-56, mile run; 1956, 880-yard run) and two outdoor (1955, mile run; 1955, two-mile run). A third-place finish at the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1955 added All-America status to Frame’s resumé.

John Lawson (1963-66) As the most recent Kansas cross country runner to win the NCAA championship, John Lawson’s career signals yet another chapter in the golden era of Kansas cross country. In 1965, Lawson pulled off an impressive sweep, capturing both the Big Eight Conference championship and the NCAA individual title and was recognized with All-America status.

A member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame, Lawson also performed valiantly on the Kansas track and field team, earning three All-America awards: one indoor for his secondplace performance in the two-mile run and two outdoor for consecutive second-place finishes in the three-mile run in 1965 and 1966. At the conference level, Lawson captured four individual championships: three indoor (1964 and 1966, two-mile run; 1966, mile run) and one outdoor (1965, three-mile run).

Billy Mills (1958-61) Gold medalist. All-American. Hall-of-Famer. Kansas Jayhawk. All these accolades describe Billy Mills, who made his impact on the Kansas tradition with golden footprints. A two-time All-American (1958 and 1959), Mills captured the 1960 Big Eight cross country championship. He was also a part of two Big Eight Conference team titles while at KU (1958 and 1959) under head coach Bill Easton. However, Mills’ legacy at KU extends far beyond the borders of the Sunflower State. A member of the 1964 United States Olympic team, Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters • 1958 and 1959 All-American and set a new Olympic record. In dramatic fashion, Mills came from behind on the last lap • 1960 Big Eight Cross Country Champion to win the race in Tokyo and to this day, he is still the only American to win the event. Mills’ • 1964 10,000 meter Olympic Gold Medalist success was also evident on the track and field team, as he set a world record in the six-mile run in 1965 (27:11.6). He won two Big Eight Conference Individual Championships, capturing both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1961, and was a member of both the 1959 and 1960 NCAA championship track teams.

MILLS’ ACCOLADES

Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1976, Mills’ iconic statue, in which his arms are raised high, is placed on the last straightaway of Rim Rock Farm, saluting the runners for their perseverance and will to compete. In fact, the pose of Mills’ silhouette is identical to the one he struck upon winning the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics.

Jim Ryun (1966-69) There is perhaps no other athlete more associated with Kansas distance running than Jim Ryun. His legend extends far beyond his KU accomplishments. A three-time Olympian (1964, 1968 and 1972), Ryun captured silver at the 1968 games in Mexico City in the 1,500 meters, duplicating the performance of former Jayhawk Glenn Cunningham at the 1936 games. During his tenure at KU from 1966-69, Ryun broke five world records, including the world outdoor mile record twice, and also claimed five individual NCAA titles. Before attending Kansas, Ryun became the first high school runner to complete the mile run in under four minutes. In addition, his national high school mile record of 3:55.3, set over 30 years ago, still stands today .

Inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982, Ryun’s statue at Rim Rock Farm sits atop the Jim Ryun Skyline Bend and is among the first statues visitors see when turning into Rim Rock Farm.

Wes Santee (1952-55) A legendary Kansas Jayhawk, Wes Santee’s contributions to Kansas cross country and track and field are among the bedrocks of the tradition-rich heritage. Santee, an Ashland, Kan., native, captured the NCAA championship in 1953, giving KU the individual crown for the third time in four years. In fact, Santee’s All-America performance at the 1953 NCAA Championships propelled the Kansas cross country team to the NCAA title, the only cross country team in KU’s history to achieve the feat. Santee also excelled at the conference level, claiming backto-back league championships in 1952 and 1953 and helping his team collect two Big Seven Conference championships (1952 and 1953).

Santee was a member of the 1952 U.S. Olympic team in the 5,000 meters. He broke three world records while at Kansas, twice setting new marks in the indoor mile run (1954, 4:04.9; 1955, 4:03.8) and in the outdoor 1,500 meters (1954, 3:42.8). A two-time outdoor All-American, Santee won the 5,000 meters in 1952 and the mile run in 1953. She was the top KU finisher in all but three races she competed in during her three years and never finished lower than fourth at the Big Eight Championships. Saul’s track career was just has decorated as her time with cross country. She was a two-time Big Eight Champion, claiming her first title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 Indoor Championships, and her second coming later that year in the 10,000 meters at the 1992 Outdoor Championships. She still holds the school record in the outdoor 5,000 meters and, until 2010, also held the indoor 5,000 meter school record.

Herb Semper (1949-52) A member of the Kansas cross country program during its golden era under the direction of head coach Bill Easton, Herb Semper firmly established his mark in the lore of Kansas cross country. Semper became the first Jayhawk to win an NCAA championship, prevailing in 1950 and then again in 1951. He remains the only runner in KU history to win two cross country individual national championships. Under Easton’s guidance, Semper was a member of two Big Seven Conference championship teams (1950 and 1951) and was a two-time Big Seven individual champion (1950 and 1951). Semper is also a member of the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame. Semper’s excellence extended to the Kansas track and field team as well. A four-time Big Seven Conference champion in the two-mile run (1950-52 indoor; 1950 outdoor), Semper was a two-time outdoor All-American after back-toback third-place finishes in the two-mile run at the NCAA ChampionSEMPER’S ACCOLADES ships. Bob Timmons (1968-88) Bob Timmons is to Kansas cross country what Phog Allen is to Kansas basketball. The man who coached KU to four NCAA Track and Field Championships is perhaps most noted for bringing Jim Ryun to Lawrence. Timmons coached Ryun at Wichita East High School until 1964, when he became an assistant at KU for a year under Bill Easton. Ryun then followed Timmons to Kansas where he continued to thrive under Timmons’ coaching. Timmons was an 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year and was the 1975 U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association TIMMONS’ ACCOLADES • 11-time NCAA District V Coach of the Year National Coach of the Year. At the helm of the KU track and field program, he led • Four Track and Field NCAA Championships the Jayhawks to 13 indoor league crowns and 14 outdoor titles. In cross country, • 1975 USTFCA National Coach of the Year Timmons guided John Lawson to the 1965 NCAA Individual Championship. In 1970, Timmons and his wife, Pat, purchased land just north of Lawrence. In 1974 that property became known as Rim Rock Farm, and it has been home of the Jayhawk cross country teams ever since. Rim Rock Farm is known as one of the best and toughest cross country courses in the nation and is a credit to Timmons’ vision and passion for the sport. The annual Bob Timmons Classic is held each September in the legendary coach’s honor on the course he put so much work into. During his career, Timmons coached 77 All-Americans, 24 NCAA champions, 16 world record holders and seven Olympians. Timmons is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.
