Islamic Civilization: Its Foundational Beliefs and Principles Abul A‘la Mawdudi

New Directions in Islamic Education: Pedagogy and Identity Formation Abdullah Sahin

In this book Mawdudi (1903-1979) attempts to bring out the vital relationship between the concept of civilization and Islam’s underlying worldview and vision of life. He argues that the true understanding of Islamic civilization is possible only by having access to the soul of that civilization and its underlying fundamental principles than to its manifestations in knowledge, literature, fine arts or rhetoric, its social life, its notions of refined living or its system of governance.

New Directions in Islamic Education explores the relationship between pedagogy and the formation of religious identities within Islamic education settings that are based in minority and majority Muslim contexts. This book engages critically with the philosophical, theological and cultural dynamics that inform Muslim educational thought and practice.

Islam, the West and the Challenges of Modernity Tariq Ramadan In Islam the West and the Challenges of Modernity Tariq Ramadan attempts to demonstrate, using sources which draw upon Islamic thought and civilization, that Muslims can respond to contemporary challenges of modernity without betraying their identity. This book argues that Muslims can approach the modern epoch by adopting a specific social, political and economic model that is linked to ethical values, a sense of finalities and spirituality. Rather than modernism that tends to impose Westernization, it is a modernity that admits to the pluralism of civilizations, religions, and cultures. £9.95 | Paperback | 372pp ISBN: 978-086037-311-7

Islamic Economic Institutions and the Elimination of Poverty Edited by Munawar Iqbal

The Future of Economics:
An Islamic Perspective M. Umer Chapra

This book focuses on the Islamic approach towards poverty elimination and the role played by some built-in institutions of the Islamic system in this respect.

Is the primary task of economics to just analyze and predict or is it also to help a society actualize its vision? Is it possible for economics to help realize the Islamic vision by taking into account only economic variables and analyzing just ‘what is’, as conventional economics does or is it also necessary to discuss the moral, psychological, social, political and historical factors that have led the hiatus between the vision and the prevailing reality, and to suggest a strategy for bridging the gap?
