The history of this hidden gem on the shores of Lake Ida dates all the way back to the 1940s. Since then, our community theater has undergone many changes, but one thing has never changed – our strong desire to provide you with the very best in entertainment at an affordable price. It’s an exciting time these days and nights at the Playhouse as we wrap up our critically-acclaimed season and begin preparations for another blockbuster year filled with the best plays, musicals, dramas, concerts, new cabaret series, children’s theater, national tours and special events, and much, much more. Year after year, an extraordinary group of volunteers helps the Playhouse produce more than 150 different performances. THE GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS lists Agatha Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time (with roughly two billion books to her credit). A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED is based on her 50th novel and features one of her most popular characters, the ever-resourceful Miss Marple. The story begins when a notice appears in a village newspaper announcing that “A murder will take place on Friday, October 29th, at Little Paddocks, at 6:30 p.m.” The delraybeachplayhouse.com
owner of Little Paddocks has no idea who has placed the notice, so she decides to ignore it. She invites a group of her friends to dinner that night and (of course) at precisely 6:30 p.m., a door swings open to reveal a man holding a blinding flashlight. Shots ring out, but the person who is killed is the very person one would least expect. Clearly the local constable will need Miss Marple’s help to solve the puzzle!

Take a sentimental musical journey back to December of 1942, as you experience this “live” radio broadcast from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room. NOVEMBER 30 - DECEMBER 16, 2018 This endearing exercise in nostalgia takes place on the night of December 21, 1942 in a seedy little New York radio station (WOV). The United States is at war and the station’s crew is rehearsing and preparing a final holiday show that will be recorded for broadcast to the troops overseas. Adding an air of poignancy to the night’s program, the show’s young trumpeter has just joined the Army and will be shipping out tomorrow. Everybody at the station

wants this holiday broadcast to be special, so they’ve pulled together their best singers to perform. Among the songs they sing are some of the great standards of the World War II era, songs like “Boogie-Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I’ll Never Smile Again,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” “I’ve Got a Gal in Kalamazoo” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” A true evocation of 1940’s Americana, even the radio commercials are authentic!

Neil Simon is not only America’s funniest playwright, he is also the only living playwright to have a legitimate Broadway theatre named in his honor. CALIFORNIA SUITE is a quartet of four brilliantly comic vignettes about different visitors to Suite 203-204 of The Beverly Hills Hotel. The Visitor from New York introduces us to an urban workaholic who cannot abide the leisurely life-style her ex-husband has adopted in an effort to lure his daughter to the West Coast. delraybeachplayhouse.com
The Visitor from Philadelphia is a middleaged businessman who has awakened on his first morning in California to find a naked prostitute unconscious in his bed. The Visitors from London include an aging British actress who may win an Oscar, but who is in imminent danger of losing her husband. While The Visitors from Chicago are two couples who find their friendships disintegrating with each hour they vacation together.

MARCH 22 - APRIL 7, 2019 No composer on Broadway has given audiences more pleasure in the past 60 years than Jerry Herman! From his earliest review in Greenwich Village in 1954 to the recent record-breaking revival of HELLO, DOLLY! starring Bette Midler, Jerry Herman has kept American audiences smiling, swaying and singing along! His first show (MILK AND HONEY) was successful, but his second (HELLO, DOLLY!) was a phenomenon, becoming the longest-running musical of its time! Later, Jerry had comparable successes

with MAME and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. Earning both The Tony Award and London’s Olivier Award as “The Best Play of the Year,” GOD OF CARNAGE is a riveting study of parenting today. Two upwardly mobile couples are brought together when the son of one couple injures the son of the other couple in a public park. He knocks two of the boy’s teeth out with a stick. The parents decide to bypass legal avenues by meeting to discuss the matter. The result is a study in just how thin the veneer of delraybeachplayhouse.com
civilization is in even the most advanced level of our society. Before the evening is over, a high-powered lawyer, a selfmade man, a passionate human rights advocate and a very insecure housewife all find themselves in an emotionally charged battle to justify and defend their children’s behavior. It’s not surprising that GOD OF CARNAGE was one of the three longest-running plays of its decade.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES! The Songs of Leo Robin OCTOBER 15-24, 2018
L
eo Robin wrote his first Broadway show in 1926, and he continued writing great songs for Broadway and Hollywood for the next three decades! In addition to writing “Thanks for the Memory” for Bob Hope, he also created signature songs for Hollywood legends like Jeannette MacDonald (“Beyond the Blue Horizon”), Tony Martin (“Hooray for Love”), Perry Como (“Prisoner of Love”) and Bing Crosby (“June in January” and “Love in Bloom”). Elvis Presley even had a hit with his song “Blue Hawaii.” His Broadway shows also included GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, the show that made Carol Channing a star and (later) showed the world that Marilyn Monroe could sing with songs like “I’m Just a Little Girl from Little Rock” and “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Show 2 |

W
hen Arthur Laurents was asked to adapt Gypsy Rose Lee’s autobiography into a musical, he declined. He thought, “Surely there are enough show-biz biographies!” But when he explored Gypsy’s early life, he discovered the story of her mother, a woman who had become a reallife “backstage” legend in her efforts to make her daughter a star. Fascinated by Gypsy’s “Mama Rose,” Laurents agreed to write the show with Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim. Together, they created a Broadway phenomenon many critics still regard as the best American Musical ever written! It certainly boasts one of Broadway’s finest scores, featuring songs like “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Some People,” “Together (Wherever We Go),” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Small World,” “If Mama Was Married” and the shop-stopping “Rose’s Turn.” Show 3 |

osh Logan was one the greatest directors in the history of the Broadway Musical Theatre! More than a director, Logan often co-wrote the musicals he directed with composers and lyricists like Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Frank Loesser and Harold Rome. s the sixties “Folk Revival” gained traction in the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village and other U.S. cities, a similar musical energy gripped Toronto’s Yorkville Village, where the likes of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia, Leonard Cohen and Buffy Sainte Marie were starting their careers in one or more of the 40 clubs there. These Canadian artists highlight a show that begins with a nostalgic medley of songs that ruled U.S. pop charts in the fifties – songs that you didn’t know were from Canada.

CHILDREN’S THEATRE
A B O U T O U R CH I LD R E N ’ S T H E AT R E YOUNG ACTORS’ WORKSHOP: Available Fall 2018 & Winter 2019 Our Young Actors’ Workshop started some 23 years ago with 7 children and 2 teachers, of which one – our Ms. Dolly – continues to teach and direct the acting classes and shows. Workshops are available for students from ages 6-18 years old, and consist of drama, diction, improv, music, singing and dance. In addition, Ms. Dolly has audition classes for those students trying to secure a position in an arts school, as well as private instruction.
SUMMER MUSICAL PRODUCTION: Each year, we put on one major musical for children (of all ages), by our talented child actors/singers/dancers. Auditions are in April, and rehearsals start on the weekend in May and full days (Monday-Friday) after school is out in June. Children have fun while learning what it takes to put on a major production. We have two public and over 20 camp performances (other Summer Camps from Sunrise to Jupiter to Pahokee pack 238 campers in each of these performances).
SUMMER FUN CAMP: Our Summer Fun Camp is a weekly camp that generally runs for three to four weeks every summer. Campers from ages 6-16 years old gain hands-on experience in drama, music and dance, and have a really great time! Each week, the children are broken into groups to write and rehearse their own skit(s) and to participate in a song-and-dance number. Additionally, every Friday, campers perform in their weekly presentation of “Live from The Delray Beach Playhouse, It’s Friday Afternoon.” We also have several other children’s programming options throughout the year, including musical readings, talent shows, opportunities for teenagers to learn backstage skills, and more!

All cell phones must be turned off prior to the performance. • Heavy use of perfume or cologne is discouraged. • A limited number of hearing devices are available.
