GREEN ATRIUM

TYPE: Regeneration

SITE: Oxford, United Kingdom

SOFTWARES USED: Adobe CC, AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Rhino, Lumion

THE ATRIUM

It was observed that people only used the atrium to get inside the shopping centre rather than spending time in it. It was chosen to be one of the intervention areas to make it more actively used. The atrium holds an important place as it is the mutual connection with the shopping centre, Hockmore Street and Barns Road. To help it reach its potential, a green regeneration is proposed with colorful materials and a garden is placed removing one of the stores that would be moved to another empty store right across. The garden is aimed to create a better connection with Hockmore Street and serve as another main entrance for people who come from the Knights Car Park.

Commercial Area

The stairs for residential area is redesigned to better define the area.

The Garden is placed on the ground floor, still having the residential area upstairs but widening the entrance to Hockmore Street.

Current Atrium:

Atrium is currently acting as a transaction point for people who want to get inside the shopping centre althought there are stores there as well and it has a potential to become an attraction point for the locals.

Strategy II: Privacy Through Lightning

To create privacy for the residents bthat live on the first floor, extra beams are added with lighning hanging out, creating a sort of a roof, to prevent people from looking upstairs. Residents would still be able to see downstairs.

Strategy I: Reorganise the Pedestrian Path

It is proposed to reorganise thepedestrian path to create a sort of a jungle in the middle and allow pedestrians to walk on each side of the jungle. The seating for the cafes would also be moved in the middle with extra seatings added.

Strategy III: Biodiversity

It is proposed to remove the current landscape elements, that is thought to be poorly implemented, to replace them with bushes and small trees, with the continunation of a garden that connects the atrium with Hockmore Street.

TYPE: Adaptive Reuse SITE: Antakya, Turkey SOFTWARES USED: Adobe CC, Revit, Lumion

ADAPTIVE REUSE STRATEGY

Hatay Governorship Building is a historic building that was built in 1927. It was partially collapsed in one of the aftershocks after the major earthquakes. Although it was said that the building would be restored, it was completely demolished recently. This project aims to criticise the decision and show that there was a better approach to take. Antakya Food Hub would function in this building after the restoration is completed.

The building will be completed in the same form as it was before, using the archeological approach. As in Turkey there are limited historic buildings, it is important to preserve the existing shape of the building while turning it into a more modern facade.

Located in the center of the city, Izmir City Hall is a historical building that was built in 1981. It was damaged and evacuated after the earthquake in 2020. The main goal of the project is to reunite the building with the city. As it is a controversial issue that a structure built in the middle of the city being detached from urban dwellers due to its functions, it has been decided to preserve but reduce the existing administrative functions. It has been argued that a building with administrative functions may also contain public spaces.

SPACIAL DECISIONS

S1. Passage Fiction and Permeability

It was proposed to remove the ground level difference of the City Hall in order to maintain permeability with the passsage design that is observed in Kemeraltı. Parliament building has also been moved to the upper floors.

S2. Creating an Approach from Kemeraltı

In order to strengthen the approach to the City Hall, it was proposed to remove and redesign the building blocking the transition. As the functions of the current City Hall are insufficient, the proposed building will be designed to be the continuation of the existing building and help it to contain more public spaces.

S3. Continuity of Green and Public Spaces

It is aimed to expand the existing green tracks to the square and to leak vertically into the inner spaces of the City Hall. Due to the fact that there are a lot of high-rise buildings in the area, it is aimed to move the green and public spaces to the upper levels. The administrative functions of the building that face the Konak Square are replaced by public spaces. In that sense, a ‘‘vertical square’’ has been created within the City Hall and its facade has also been covered in green.
