LIVING ROOM OF CITY CULTURE _Kashgar Uyghur Culture Exhibition Hall Conceptual Design _Studio Work, Independently, Summer 2008 _Tutor: KONG yuhang, GAO dehong _Selected Works of the 2008 Revit Cup National Design Competition of Architecure Students Kashgar, the most uyghur culture concentrated city in west Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region of China, has a old town where traditional vernacular settlements based on the one hand, and surrounding newly developed modern urban structure on the other hand. Both of which are harmoniously exsiting here, however, rapid modernization and urbanization are gnawing the silence of old structure, the historic value of the city is being passed away due to the demolishing of old house. To achieve the goal of pretecting the history culture and preserving traditional vernacular architecture, by applying the guiding theory of architectual topolgy, based on the site investigation of conservation level of old house, the project is in an attempt to preserve a unit of residence, upgraded with high tech and new material, and ultimately, reinterpreted in terms of exhibition hall. Somehow, protecting the physical value, and Inherit the Kashgar culture at the same time. Furthermore, the contribution of this project can be considered as a single magnetic spot, which has the potential to drive the resuscitation of whole city by uniformly distributing at different parts of the city.

With the establishment of the Political Institution, the city horizontally expends itself with new appearance of residential area.

The above chart of structure, age, area of the the existing Gaotai residential areas shows the findings of analysis and the main land targets In the Old City Reconstruction Project and planning of roads around the site. From Kaxgar’s longterm planning for the historic sites refining to the site around specific street environment, we have taken full accounts of various factors.

Trees withered, sunlight radiation heating, ventilation holes send hot air from sunlight house, air in ground floor, as usual is sent into the indoor at air temperature, water heating collector provides the heat, the exchanged gases are vented by the ventilation shaft.

Window for natural ventilation summer,trees,rattan plants for shade, the vents open, natural wind comes indoors. After heat exchanging,the wind will be pulled out by the exhaust ventilation shaft Indoor air cooling down through the underground pipelines.The back wall has a very good insulation factor with the advantage of heat preservation in summer, heat insulation in winter.

RECONCILIATION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW _Kashgar Mediatheque Conceptual Design _Studio Work,Independently, Summer 2010 _Tutor: KONG yuhang Kashgar is the center of Uyghur historic culture, the wave of globalization began to erode every part of this city. The process is out of control and unstable in a reason of the developer's awareness which pictured the entire surroundings. Therefore, here triggers a question: Does the architecture end up as a product of human relationships, or the interaction between human being and nature? Most of us have strong desire for nature, traveling where by our heart and soul, which is similar when experience a building. By facing such an exciting land, the task in front of us is how to create a remarkable but not overwhelming place, where everybody can easily be involved in, and their spirit is the main motivation to create materials, while the material reacts with the spirit. The entire area is formed by the subconscious of the nature and history, which is a perfect space for Inheriting the essential value. Instead of generating the parody, here demonstrates a strategy neither demolishing nor rebuilding, which highly emphasise to innovate a prototype apart from and become unique, let the history remain its value and the context continues its spirit, it’s all due to the main inhabitants of Kashgar are not tourists but aboriginal residents who are eager for the progress of the era like us.

The orientation of Kashgar is in the northwest of PR China with the second largest desert close by

The desert is called Taklamakan with the area of 337,000 km2 in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region

In case of architecture design in historic city, fake antique is inevitable, however, which is not advocated.

The wriggly texture of the desert and particular array can be an inspiration for conceptual design


Extract from the desert, we have several components: wriggly fabric, breaking up the whole into parts and organic structure.

Simplifying of which, the preliminary sketch is shaped, it contains the organic growing inferred from former processes.

The design initiated the ideal of "Break up the whole into parts", reduced the formal urban density, in stead, integrated the new urban public space into the architectural spatial structure by providing a platform for the interaction of the citizen and visitors. The new solution supplemented some essential function of modern city such as Theater, Library and Exhibition Hall, at the same time, implanted the original ethnic industries in terms of small ethnic retails and hand craft shops.

Considering of the exsitence as a modesty attitude in this environment, here promote the titanium alloy and glass as facade materials, interacting with surroundings by reflection and transmission.

Open space is currently translated at the ground level with different height, convenient access is created at the time.

SOFTEN THE RIGIDNESS _Suzhou Gymnasium Conceptual Design _Studio Work, Independently, Winter 2010 _Tutor: ZHANG yu Gymnasium consistently exists in urban structure with a spirit of rigidness, straightness and majesty. Meanwhile, unitary function and large scale can be the physical feature of it under modern circumstance. Regarding the rapid increasing of various social needs and aggravating urban load. Therefore, here impatiently demand available from larger scale public building and the gym is the best bellwether. We have to re-survey the design strategy of design. Site located in Suzhou, the most famous historic and biggest material resource and manufacturing city in China. Design concept here is derived from a popword “ 杭丝苏稠 (silk from Hangzhou and Suzhou)” which indicates the speciality of local-silk. Through what is discovering flexibility and how can it softens the rigid expression of gym in terms of remodeling the shape and rearranging the spatial structure. Gym is no longer a container of singer sports event rather than providing more possibilities to the urban actors’ social activities. In addition, there is more or less commercial value due to the maintenance. Flexibility is various and indefinite, here highlighted with a metaphor of demands based on the current social needs. The reconciliation of flexibility and rigidness is coupled with the interface between building and outdoor open space for actors from different levels equally experiences the environment.

Through the ideal of “ 杭 丝 苏 稠 ”, extract the local language, soften the rigidness of the gymnasium architecture, humanize the majesty. The silk has been shaped randomly, then, the result became the motif of the design.

The orientation of sports architectural complex is relatively centralized. Among the stadium and natatorium, the approach emphasizes the spatial transition, sequence and identification.

Constructing Structure

WASTE TO ENERGY _Chengdu Smart City Prototype Design _PJ 2 Project, Spring 2012, Colleagues: Violeta Burckhardt and Johanna Kleibl _Tutor: Prof. Raoul Bunschoten WASTE is an intelligent system that changes our conception of waste into something positive: Energy and valuable recycled materials. WASTE’s basic strategy is to recycle as much waste as possible and use all other waste materials to generate electrical energy. Besides improving energy efficiency and mitigating pollution, WasTE structures the 5th ring’s urban development by providing a development plan in 4 phases and adjusting the existing infrastructure to the system’s advantage. The distribution of different waste treatment facilities around Chengdu’s 5th ring creates flows from collection centers to incineration plants, biogas plants and recycling centers. Based on an analysis of of the intensity of three respective material flows around the ring, the road system is improved and sometimes newly created to direct waste materials efficiently towards their final destination.

The collection center is the center of every new node, the smallest and most frequently applied institution of WasTE around the 5th ring. All waste from the node's built up areas gets there automatically through the underground vaccum waste transportation system.

Key elements of the masterplan for the development of Chengdu‘s 5th ring are the urbanization in 4 subsequent steps, a complete road system connecting the nodes with each other and allowing an efficient transport of materials that are used for power generation and recycling. Each node can have in between 3000 and 8500 residential units. The average number of people in a Chengdu household is 3.12. With a median number of units per node, the first to third generation of nodes will house about 1,614,600 people. Based on the intensity and speed of population growth the fourth generation of nodes can accomodate up to 1 million people.

CONNECTIVITY OF OCTOPUS _Urban Design of Shanghai Yangpu District, North Sichaun Road & Wujin Road Area _Joint Studio Project, Fall 2011, Colleagues: Simon Weischer, Adam Haspica and Sining Gong _Tutor: Prof. Wang Bowei Shanghai is the most urbanized city in China, high-rise skyscrapers and low-rise dense Linong housing are complexly interleaving together. There is a strong contradiction between the modern urban fabric and the traditional texture, how to ameliorate the negative influence? How to fill the gap of different levels of social contradiction on the design of urban regeneration? How to meet the basic social needs such as sanitary facilities for the inhabitants became the focus problem. My research aims to the relationship between local space under globalization and modern function, explore the strength of traditional value and transfor it to support the modern activities, improve the weakness in terms of urban regeneration. Here inspired by the body structure of octopus and based on such organization, I implanted a organic spatial connectivity to the studying context as rigidly measure on the one hand, and proposed a flexible guidence and management strategy on the other hand.

Site Condition

Site Area(Block): Composed by two lots and the path between t h e m c o n n e c t i n g Z h a p u Ro a d to Sichuan North Road Park.

Traffic: the thicker the line, the h i g h e r t h e v e l o c i t y. T h e r e a r e Wusong Road and Haining Road as fast traffic path; North Sichuan and Wujin Road as slow ones.

Public Open Space: North Sichuan Road Park located in the north of the site and smaller public square around the metro in the south.

Locality

The site located in the center district of Shanghai, which mainly take the responsiblity of economic, culture and commercial part. Around the site, there are three most important elements: The North Sichuan Road, which is a busy commercial street as I mentioned before, the Sinping Road-Wusong Road, and North Sichaun Road Park. These three components together lead a very clear definition to the site, and also crate both advantages and dis-advantages to our site.

COMMEMORATING IN CRACK _Architectural Design of BeiChuan Earthquake Memorial _Practical Project, Fall 2011, Colleagues: Sining Gong, Xiaoyi Cheng, Hanxing Liu and Honglei Qiu _Intern in Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University The architectural design of BeiChuan Earthquake Memorial is my first representable practical project except academic study at school. As we all know, in May 12th, 2008, Sichuan experienced the most devastating and maximumly spreading earthquake since the founding of new China. The government decide to establish a series of memorial installations to record the past and re-evoke people's future. Thus, I feel honor to be one part of this design. The memorial is generated from two reflections : one is about a series of natural events, the other one is about the relationship between man and nature. The principle concept of “fracture”is applied through the whole particular distribution of landscape and architecture to cultivate the “land art” vision as crustal cracks, and by this way ,to free-frame the disaster event on the earth in an art way and arouse the infinite memory of each person visiting here. I was involved to process the conceptural and construction design of this project, as well as personal site investigation, gained the basic architectural design process experience and negotiation skill with chinese developers at a later stage.

Preliminary Model

Regarding the building materials of the interior, the concept is followed by th e in tegration design, using the fair-forced concrete as the main conponent for wall and floor, couple with the rusty steel plate is considered as the reflection of external surface and incredible relief resource. Inorder to interpret a placidness spatial impression, beside the texture of material, the spatial distribution of the design also provide multiple interior scale, which are lower hight (around 4.5 meters) and bigger scale space (around 10 meters high). Meanwhile, the light through the gap between floor and wall which created high quality exhibiting atmosphere, couple with the greeny court yard brings the natural light and adjusting the microclimate of the internal space. The integration of wall and stair, emphasizing the continuity and simplification of the design.

The sight photos beside are clearly describing the shap and texture, especially, the scale contrast, which is providing mulitple spatial impression to the visitors. FIRST AID KIT FOR PARADISE _Urban Research & Design promoted by "48 Hours Neukölln " _Research & Practical Project, Summer 2012, Colleagues: Andres Riegner, Yu Huang, Qian Liu _Cooperation between Berlin Technical University and "Action! KMS (Karl-Marx-Straße)" City Management Committee The Karl-Marx-Straße is an important commercial street that lies at the south of Berlin. This street had its boom in the middle of the 20th century as a commercial area, standing side by side with the most important commercial area of Berlin today, the Kurfürstendamm commercial street. Since then it has lost its popularity. Lack of public space is consider as the main issue in many modern cities, no exception in Karl-Marx-Straße as well. The sublet difference is here located several public space but lack of supporting activities, which led to less spatial vitality, for instance, the small square in front of the Rathaus Neukölln. "First aid kit for paradise" is in a way of using proper items and guidance, to "save" the vitality of public spaces. The objective of this project is to serve different categories of space use possibilities and associating props, based on the site investigation and efficient measures, aim to motivate the voids of Karl-MarxStraße, attract more inhabitants to be evolved into this project, occupy the public space which initially owned by themselves.

"48 Hours Neukölln", art festival lasted for 48 hours, considered as the important art and creative event in Neukölln, which encourages the creative conductors and interaction between each art work and participant. The Neukölln Rathaus is located in the middle of Karl-MarxStraße, which is main administrative center of Neukölln district. Due to its locality advantage and the potential for gethering large people flow, the practical urban design which is based on the former research and promoted by "48 Hours Neukölln", chose here as operational site.

Through the Chinese Context, English word "Animal" also represented as "Moving Object". This work resulted in such different perspective of comprehension.

The given subject focused on a highly functional commodity, therefore, why particular function needs a particular form? By deconstructing and reconstructing the shape of the tea pot, there appeared a unique form however following the original use.

NU DE WOMA N I was concentrating on the audiences while who were watching attentively on the naked female body, besides, my observation is more about their varied expression as well.

H UMA N B ODY When a geometric shape meets human's body, triangle must be the most representable one, e.g., the regular triangle for female and inverted triangle for male.
