Your holiday has begun! This booklet, the KUHNLE-TOURS Captain’s Manual, will be your personal pilot for a perfect boat cruise. On the following pages we have collected all the information you will need for your cruise. This information is relevant for all cruising areas – from booking confirmation to the start of your holiday and leaving your boat at the end of your holiday. Everything is sorted chronologically in the order you will need the information. You can read this manual in the whole or chapter by chapter every time you need more information. For the fast readers we have written some summary information in the margins. By the way: Although it is called “Captain’s Manual”, every crew member should do some light reading of the manual, after all the skipper is on holiday too. The KUHNLE-TOURS crew hope you enjoy reading this booklet. PS: If you have further questions, do not hesitate to contact our KUHNLE-TOURS booking department or the team at your embarkation base.

Plan a cruise We hope you will have a lovely holiday.

On a cruise it should be a leisurely holiday where you change your plans as you go. Having that flexibility though takes some planning! With a boat you do need to have enough provisions (food, fuel, water) on board and know exactly where you plan to be in the evening so you know whether you need to book. In any crew there will be those who want to nap and simply enjoy the scenery and those who want to be ashore enjoying the local shopping and restaurants. A successful cruise is all about keeping everyone happy. If you are bringing a dog it is a good idea to plan stops and walking points. There are many travel guides for the cities, but do not forget to seek out the pretty villages along the lakes and rivers may which may not be in the guides. We provide information on the cultural highlights in our main catalogue.

Our boats have a speed of 8 to 10 km/h To pass a boat through the lock takes 15 to 30 minutes A boat trip up the hill takes longer than a boat trip down the hill Clues for planning a cruise • The average speed of our boats is 8 to 10 km/h • In Germany the average duration of passing a boat through a lock is 30 minutes and this can be longer for automatic locks. In France the average time is about about 15 minutes. Depending on the season, longer waiting times are possible. • Boat trips up the hill (upstream) take slightly longer than boat trips down the hill (downstream). You need to include a buffer of half a day or even a day for delays due to poor weather. You can moor at small ports for sport boats or bigger marinas. In France the communities often arrange docks along the banks of the canals. Of course on most lakes anchoring is permitted. In the chapter “On the way“ it is specified whether there are restrictions and what kind of restrictions you need to consider for mooring. Children who are not confident swimmers must wear a life jacket on board during the boat trip. All our bases provide life jackets for children in a variety of sizes.

Cleaning

High Speed Bicycle carrier

Bicycles Not all moorings are accessible by public transport so it is a good idea to have a bicycle to get around. You are welcome to bring your own bicycles or you can rent from us. If you are going on holiday in high season we advise booking your rental bicycles before arrival.

At the end of the holiday if you are in a hurry , we will be pleased to take care of cleaning the boat. If you require this service please let us know as soon as you can or when you leave the boat. Washing up, stripping the beds and clearing the boat of rubbish are not included in the cleaning service. If the boat is returned in a poor state the base may charge additional cleaning costs. Book our cleaning service now.

The exclusive boat package is included on all Aquinos and Kormoran boats. For all other boats the exclusive boat package must be booked. PackING In my suitcase I put… already wrong, because everything that cannot be folded and easily stored, is not for travelling on a boat. So leave your suitcase at home and take your old duffel bag and put your clothes into travelling bags. This cruise has no requirement for evening dresses, just casual clothes.

Linen Linen will be available at the base. All boats are equipped with pillows and quilts. The pillow and quilt cases will be on board.

Do you have all documents? You will need the following papers: Identity card/passport Yachting licence, original Waterway guide Captain’s Manual Cash or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to place the deposit

Travelling bag or duffel bag instead of suitcase

In general, the KUHNLE-TOURS boats are equipped with everything you need in an ordinary kitchen: pots, pans, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery and cooking utensils. For a successful holiday you just need to bring a nice crew. There are a few things which could make your holiday more comfortable:   Warm clothes, e.g. fleece jackets   Sailing gloves   Torch   Rain coat, jacket and trousers   Yacht shoes with anti-slip sole   Binoculars (you can rent binoculars at Hafendorf Müritz) We would also recommend bringing:   Towels   Sun glasses   Sunscreen   Enough memory for your camera   12-V-charging cable for cameras and mobile phones (a 220-V-charging cable is possible on our new boats, please see on page 16)   Midge repellent for the summer season e.g. insect repellent spray, incense cone, tea-tree-oil and fly flap   Your own first aid box can also be useful (one already aboard)

Embarkation

Children’s security on board

On several boat types you have single and double bunks. For example on the Kormoran boat you can easily change between double and single beds.

On arrival please first check-in at the marina office. Lifejackets will be provided at the marina office for children who cannot swim so they are safe in the marina area. Our staff will provide an extensive briefing and some hands on instruction. They will do their utmost to ensure a wonderful start to your boating holiday. If you already know our boats it might be possible to shorten the instruction. Please speak to our team in the marina office. The hands on instruction and boat handover is always done within the times stated in the booking confirmation and the tickets. Please schedule three hours at the day of embarkation and one hour for disembarkation. If you have a co-skipper they are also invited to listen to the briefing and instructions. Four ears will always hear more than two!

You or a member of your crew should discuss safety rules with all the children and especially those who are unable to swim. Each family will have their own way of doing this, but the following rules would make good sense:  • When I am on deck or outside, I have to wear a lifejacket.  • If I am able to swim for 5 minutes and we are in a marina and the engine does not run, I do not need to wear a lifejacket.  • On deck, I should always be within eyesight of an adult.  • I should not open the fridge alone.  • I am not allowed to play on the second helmstand when the engine runs.  • I only leave the boat, when the engine has stopped.  • Within a lock, I stay on board.  • When going down-/upstairs, I always hold tight with one hand.

Everything clear?

On board a boat the lifejacket is as important as a child’s car seat in a car. It is not possible to watch children the whole time so lifejackets are absolutely essential. Babies and toddlers are especially vulnerable. To date there have been no reported accidents involving children on any of our boats but we must not be complacent.

The Febomobil is great for the family, easy to use, a fantastic swimming platform and very easy to manoeuvre. The boat has a small engine (15 bhp (11.03 kW)) so even unlicensed charterers can now enjoy the lakes. With a length of 9.9 metres it has everything you need for a boating holiday. Thanks to its special construction, the Febomobil is great for wheelchairs. We also have a larger version, the Febomobil 1180, which offers berths for up to 7 people in 2 cabins (one of them barrier-free). They are based in Minimarina Mirow, Zehdenick and in Berlin-Zeuthen. Living Aboard Life on board is leisurly, comfortable and close to nature. People enjoy the simplicity of spending time with family and friends.

Audio system Elektricity Pantry: Cooker Refrigerator

Music aboard

On all boats you can listen to music via iPhone/iPad/iPod or MP3 player speakers.

Electricity

Pantry: Cooker and oven

The on-board voltage is 12 volt. There are two separate battery systems, one for starting the engine and one for the general electricity supply. Please only switch on the lights, when necessary. The 230 V-sockets have various wattage. Please refer to the chart below. Aquino 1190, Kormoran 1500, 1290 and 1150 and the Hainesboats are equipped with shore power independent sockets (230volt shore supply and 230-volt inverter), which means that if there is no shore power, they have 2,000 watts in continuous operation, up to 3,000 watts in the tips and at all sockets. Thus, provided the batteries are charged, you can also lie at anchor or use a hairdryer, DVD player, laptop or other 230-volt devices while driving. Sockets can be found in every cabin and wet room as well as on the outside stand (works both when shore power connection as well as for on-board operation with 230-volt inverter). Switching from the shore power to the inverter takes place automatically when pulling the shore connection cable. New are the USB Sockets in some boats, read the table below.

The cooker and oven are gas and most of our boats have three or four gas rings. Please tie up the curtains to avoid fires.

Pantry: Refrigerator The refrigerator works on the boats either with gas or electric. Gas refrigerator: To switch on or if the flame goes out, hold down the gas valve button and press the ignition button several times. If the flame is burning, hold down the gas valve button for about 30 seconds and release it. If the flame goes out again, repeat the procedure. Some refrigerators have an automatic re-ignition. On-board refrigerators have a limited capacity compared to a normal domestic refrigerator. Always close the door carefully and open it as seldom as possible to maintain a low temperature. A gas on board refrigerator can only be 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. Please keep the air outlets clear.

Gas system

Dirty water disposal

Aboard you will find one or two gas bottles, according to the duration of your journey. When one bottle is empty a system will automatically change to the other bottle. Security instructions:  • Make sure the gas bottles are not damaged.  • Pay attention that gas could never discharge (explosion risk).  • While cooking, never leave the cooker unwatched.  • If you smell gas: Stop the engine, close the gas tap at the bottle, do not smoke and call our service telephone for technical emergency cases or accidents (24 hours a day): 0049 (0)1 71 - 3 33 55 58    • Cooker and oven waste oxygen, so take care that there is enough ventilation.

In our charter bases in Germany and Poland we provide installations to pump out your holding tank. You will find further possibilities in the documents provided. The facilities mentioned in the waterway guide at Törnplaner or Törnatlas do not always offer the capacities for the big tanks of our boats. For the capacities of the tanks of your boat, please refer to the chart on the right. At the end of your trip dirty water disposal is free of charge and is taken over by the base staff, the only exception being Zehdenick.

Toilet and bathroom Toilet: To pump down please first use the lever “Ansaugen“ (lighting) and pump as long as necessary. Switch the lever to “Drain” (to draw off) and pump till empty. Pump several times. The toilets are easily plugged. Do not throw any external objects or sanitary article into the toilet. Use as little toilet paper as possible. There is an extra charge for unblocking a toilet. The electric on-board toilets are operated via the panel mounted above the toilet. For rinsing, select “ECO” (flushing) or “NORMAL” (flushing) as needed. To empty the toilet, press “EMPTY”. Bathroom: The shower water is automatically pumped out. Please, take care that the drain is always clean and not blocked.

Water Our tanks for fresh water are really big, nevertheless, you should be careful of your water consumption. Do not hesitate to fill up with water if you see the opportunity. Villages and locks often have fresh water and marinas always provide this service. The filler cap is on the deck with the inscription “EAU”, “WASSER” or “WATER”. Please take care that you do not mix the filler for water with the one for fuel. Consequential costs will be at your expense. Switch off the water pump during the night.

Waste Please never throw your waste over board there will be bins at the locks, marinas and in the villages.

Pets If your dog is joining you on holiday, please schedule shorter day trips so that he has plenty of time to exercise ashore. In marinas and at locks dogs must be kept on leads at all times.

Case of emergency Emergency telephone number Police, fire department, rescue service: 112 Our service telephone for technical emergency cases or accidents (24 hours a day): 0049 (0)1 71 - 3 33 55 58 Please remember: It is always necessary to call the water/ harbour police as well after an accident.

Breakdown service In case of a breakdown we will help you quickly. You always need to name your position and the name of the boat. Call us: 0049 (0) 171-3 33 55 58 (24h)

On most KUHNLE-TOURS boats the water is heated by the engine. This system is very efficient and after travelling during the day you will usually have enough hot water for all your daily needs. If thewater is not hot enough, please start the engine for about 20 minutes with approximately 1500 revolutions. The water supply only works when the water pump is on. The Febomobils are equipped with solar energy or gas.
