Celebrity judges Chuck Boller, HIFF Executive Director; Leslie Kawamoto, Island Tails Blogger, Honolulu Advertiser; and Russell Tanoue, Fashion/Glamour Photographer; were also on hand to lend their film, pet and aesthetic expertise to the Hawaii Pet Film Festival awards ceremony. Although all the submissions were adorable, Unleashed by Ozzi Quintero stole the show and best film award. Featuring his 2 year old Thai Ridgeback Roxy, Unleashed highlighted Roxy’s amazing Parkour-inspired talents. This agile dog scaled walls, leaped over small walls and at times, it seemed as though he was about to take off flying. Ozzi and Roxy took home the grand prize valued at over $1000 dollars, including $500 in pet supplies and $500 cash. Congratulations Ozzi! What are the first three things that come to your mind when you read the words “pet health?” Before you continue reading take a moment… close your eyes and take inventory on what comes to mind. For me, it is exercise, nutrition, and training. I’d be curious to know how many of you added training to your top three? Don’t worry if you did not put it there, for most people “training” probably would not even make the top 10. For that very reason, this month I want to bend your ear and help to raise your awareness of what “training” can mean to your pets mental health. Here is another visual. Picture your home or room that you live and sleep in. Now imagine that you can never leave that space. You can hear your neighbors talking and laughing, occasionally you can smell some10

one cooking on the grill (yum!), when you look out the window you see people walking or jogging by. But you, you can never leave. Remember in 2006 when Oahu had 40 plus days of rain? How was your mental health by day 5? Day 10? Day 30! Did you feel restless? Irritable? Forgetful? Did you sleep more? These are some of the physical and mental symptoms people experience when they are in a confined space for a period of time. Now think about your pet’s daily routine. What kind of mental stimulation do they receive throughout their day? Dogs are pack animals and thrive when they are around other dogs and people. Did you know that many dogs need a minimum of two half hour walks a day just to maintain their phys-
ical health? Do you sit on the floor and engage with your dog while rubbing their belly or is it a quick pat on the head as you walk through the door? Do you take them to a training class where they are stimulated around other dogs, different environments and people, and where they learn something new on a weekly bases? If your dog receives mental stimulation it can help prevent problem behaviors such as (but not limited to) chewing on furniture, digging, hoarding through the garbage, anxiety, fear, and aggression. I recently had a client who expressed their concern for their 2-year-old Shitzu/Fox Terrier mix, named Tiger. Tiger was showing signs of fear towards certain people. Instead of keeping Tiger in the house to avoid the situation I encouraged my client and Tiger to go for car

rides and walks to get Tiger out of the house and desensitize him to various people, places, and things. Car rides and walks are wonderful mental stimulation for dogs! Three weeks later my client excitedly reported that he could see a change in Tiger’s confidence in a variety of situations. (Please note, if you find you are having behavioral problems with your dog, please consult a professional trainer to develop a behavior modification program, a car ride and walk is not the answer to all behavioral problems.)

Participate in an advanced or social obedience class with other dogs and owners. Your dog will learn new techniques and they will learn to be comfortable and wellbehaved around other dogs. Doggie Adventures and Training offers a Tricks and Games Class, Advanced Obedience Training and ‘Hounds on the Town’ class. During the latter class we meet at a different location each class period so dogs can socialize with new people, dogs, and work through various situations they might be uncomfortable with. 2. Train something new weekly or monthly. One of my favorite tricks books is ‘101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with your Dog’ by Kyra Sundace and Clancey. Start a list of behaviors to teach your dog and put one behavior on a note card. Choose a new card/behavior a week to train your dog. 3. Do not place your dog’s food in a bowl and walk away for them to freely eat. Stuff a toy with their breakfast or dinner so they have to work to get the food. Feed your dog their breakfast and dinner by hand
while your training them. And, Finally, hide their food in various parts of the house (make sure locations are safe and sanitary) so they learn to look for their food throughout the house. (This needs to be trained.) Remember, mental stimulation is just as important for your pet’s health as exercise and good nutrition! For most of us, our new year's resolution includes better health and fitness. A workout partner is your best bet for sticking to a fitness program and your dog is just the loyal companion to keep you on track. New research from the University of Missouri has found that people who walk dogs are more consistent about regular exercise and show more improvement in fitness than people who walk with a friend. In a 12week study of 54 older adults at an assisted living home, 35 people were assigned to a walking program for five days a week, while the remaining 19 served as a control group. Among the walkers, 23 selected a friend or spouse to serve as a regular walking partner along a trail laid out near the home. Another 12 participants took a bus daily to a local animal shelter where they were assigned a dog to walk. To the surprise of researchers, the dog walkers showed a big improvement in fitness, while the human walkers began making excuses to skip the workout. Walking speed among the dog walkers increased by 28 percent, compared with just a 4 percent increase among the human walkers. There are numerous benefits gained from stepping out with your furry companion. Currently, it’s estimated that as many as 50% or more of our pets are overweight or obese. Walking is a good means of losing weight for our dogs, just like it is for us. Overall, walking provides your pet the necessary physical and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Dogs which are exercised regularly tend to be better behaved and have fewer behavioral problems.

Not to mention that time on the pavement with him saves the cost of a gym membership. If you’re just getting started, here are a few tips to put your best foot forward. Aim for 30-minute walks, five times a week. Keep your dog on leash when out and about. Take a plastic bag for waste disposal. Make sure your dog is properly identified. And always take fresh water for you and your dog to drink. More vigorous exercise alternatives that you and your pet will enjoy are swimming or a game of fetch in the park. Swimming is a full-body workout for you and your pet and there are a number of Oahu beaches where leashed dogs are allowed. Cat Show Here kitty kitty! We were able to catch the Cat Show of the season and it did not disappoint. Hawaii’s best and brightest felines competed in a variety of categories for prizes and glory at the Cat Fanciers' show. Top notch judges Hilary Helmrich from Phoenix, Karen Lawrence also from Phoenix, Carolyn Lyons-Prisser Sacramento and Yurchick from Tacoma, traveled from across the country to oversee the event. We were amazed at the time judge took with each cat -- identifying their breed characteristics and educating the audience about what made that cat so special. Da Pug Club We love pugs! The Honolulu Pug Club is one of the largest and active dog clubs in Hawaii hosting meetups each month at a variety of locations throughout Oahu. The most recent event was held at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park and over a dozen pugs and owners attended. Over the years every pug meetup has defied the odds and beat out gloomy weather predictions. This event was no exception. Gray skies covered most of the island, and although there was a brief shower in east Honolulu, the club braved the sprinkle under a tree at the park and were rewarded with an empty dog park -- all the other dogs and owners ran from the park when the first drops fell! Yes, dental care is most important – for us as human beings as well as for our loving pets! As a matter of fact, I see my dentist on a routine basis at least twice a year. At my own recent dental visit, my Dentist stressed the need for brushing and flossing my teeth properly in order to avoid dental diseases, which can lead to other health issues. Being proactive about your dental care can ultimately save you money, save your teeth, keep your body well, and as an added bonus, make your smile brighter! Likewise, did you know that dental care is just as crucial for your dogs and cats as it is for us? Many times we overlook this important aspect of our pets’ care; but, interestingly enough, dental disease is very common in our loving animals. Approximately 80% of our dogs and 70% of our cats show signs of gum disease by the age of 3 years old. Such signs include bad breath, visible tartar on the teeth, swelling under the eyes, loose or missing teeth, difficulty eating, discharge from the nose, drooling or excessive salivation, pawing at the teeth or mouth, discoloration or staining of the teeth, red, irritated, swollen or bleeding gums, weight loss or loss of appetite and showing signs of being lethargic. If your pet is showing any of these clinical signs, your Veterinarian will be able to detect such dental diseases by performing a proper physical exam. Doesn’t this sound similar to what we would do as human beings if we were to show such signs in our own dental care? Ultimately, we would

visit our Dentist; in the instances noted above, your Veterinarian would be your pets’ best friend! Let me share the impact of one of these diseases with you. The most advanced gum disease is called periodontitis – an infection between the gum and lower part of the tooth caused by bacteria, tartar (cal-
cium deposits) or residual food. The disease begins with discoloration of the teeth and tartar forms because the plaque builds up in the area. Tartar “can find its way into the gums” where bacteria “can become trapped,” thereby causing infections. In advanced periodontal disease, infections can enter the blood stream and damage other organs of the body systems, such as the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs and nervous system. It can also cause complications to some existing diseases such as diabetes. As with many other diseases in Veterinary Medicine, I suggest that prevention is the best medicine. Periodontal disease treated
with proper care of your pet such as antibiotics and regular cleaning can “slow down” the advancing of the disease. In addition to seeing the Veterinarian, each pet owner must take responsibility to care for the animal. This means daily brushing of your pets’ teeth with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste for dogs and cats. Brushing your pets’ teeth with human toothpaste can cause “tummy” upset. This is the best first step in starting the oral care. If you don’t know how to brush your pets teeth, ask your Veterinarian or Veterinary Assistant to show you how the proper technique. In addition, many food companies are formulating foods proven to be effective in combating plaque and tartar buildup. It is also important to know that for dogs, there are many “chew” toys which will not only keep him or her “busy;” it will also help to keep their teeth clean as well. Proactive treatment is the goal to maintaining the natural defenses that exist in your pets’ mouth. These defenses can prevent or “slow down” the progression of periodontal disease and other dental problems from becoming invasive to your pets’ good health. It is also important to involve your Veterinarian in the dental care of your pets. This means “regular visits to see the Veterinarian for regular check-ups, proper dental care such as the use of proper tooth brushes and gel as advised by your Veterinarian and much love to your furry friends as you provide the necessary dental care for them.

The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in April of 2009, based on their mission: “Every healthy, treatable animal will find a forever home.” Within three months, the Oahu SPCA was thrown into a large scale sheltering operation literally overnight, in the largest rescue in Hawaii’s history. Their facility at 1142 Roosevelt Avenue, Kapolei has become a community center bringing families together. Choosing a rescued animal not only saves the life of the animal, but also enriches the lives of those who adopt. The Oahu SPCA rescues animals suffering from abuse, neglect or abandonment all over the island each day. They rescue, rehabilitate and re-home more than 20 dogs and cats per week. They care for more than 50 dogs and 100 cats per day. This includes spay/neutering, micro chipping, and all medical and behavioral rehabilitation in preparation for adoption. Some of these stories include: • Three young dogs Maile, Flicker and Annette were left to starve in their yard after their owners moved to the mainland. The three dogs huddled together for days until they were rescued and taken to the shelter. They are now happy, healthy and two have been adopted. Fortunately the memory of their past has faded away. • A kitten was sprayed with insulation foam covering its entire body. It took several weeks to clean and rehabilitate little Frosty. She now has a beautiful coat. • A young, neglected and emaciated 20

Husky mix named Snow escaped from its life of confinement. He was found wondering the streets of Honolulu looking for food. His hair has grown back, and he spent the holidays with his new family. • A young terrier was abandoned in a field and huddled in the high grass. He was too terrified to come out for help. Benji was hungry, thirsty, and covered in ticks. He is starting the New Year with his new family. • A two-year-old Sharpei named Raz, from the Waianae rescue, was inflicted with blindness. His eye surgery was successful and now he can see. Raz has been adopted to a loving home and has a big back yard to run and play. Neglected and abandoned animals usually require additional training, love and care. Foster families are essential to the behav-
ioral rehabilitation of each rescue. Foster care is a rewarding experience that allows each family to witness the transformation of a pet in need. Spay and neutering saves lives. There are simply not enough families on our island to care for the numbers of pets that are born each year. As the population of people grows on Oahu, so does the population of pets grow, exponentially. Two unaltered dogs can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. Two unaltered cats can produce 370,000 offspring in seven years and more than 2,000,000 in eight years. (Statistics provided by Spay USA). These are incredible numbers when you consider there are only approximately 1,000,000 people on Oahu to care for all these newborns including the existing pets that inhabit our island. Save a life, spay and neuter all your pets! The Oahu SPCA is working diligently to establish a permanent shelter and a state of the art spay/neuter clinic. Their facility in Kapolei was donated courtesy of The Hunt Development Group. They must find an individual, business, or group to sponsor the permanent facility, in the next few months. DIRTY, SMELLY DOG? As most of us know keeping our pets clean is an ongoing obligation that can be back-breaking at times. This may be the front yard, a sink, or the bathtub depending on the size of your canine. Use a rubber mat in tubs or sinks so that your dog isn’t slip-sliding away. Use a hose with a spray nozzle or shower massager so that you can reach every part of your dog with ease. There are a variety of shampoos and conditioners to consider when washing your dog. If your pet has a skin condition, consult your veterinarian, groomer or a pet store professional for the best products for your pet. Sensitive skin care lines are available at most pet stores. Make sure the water temperature is at a comfortable level. Too hot and you’ll burn your pet, too cold and you’ll have a shivering dog. The more comfortable your dog, the easier it will be to bathe them. If you have a long-haired dog, comb their hair beforehand to avoid unnecessary tangles. Place cotton balls in your pet’s ears to pro-
tect them from water. Gently coax your dog into the washing area. Depending on the dog and their affinity to water, you may have to use a leash or
harness. Keep your hand on your dog at all times. Make sure you use a soothing voice throughout the bath – this is supposed to be enjoyable for both of you! A calm owner = a calm pet. Wet your dog slowly from head to tail with warm water, including the undersides, so that they are saturated to the skin. Do not get water in their inner ears or eyes. Apply dog shampoo in small amounts and work up a good lather from the top of their head to their tail. Don’t forget to clean their belly, tail and between their toes. Dog Bites:
Can It Happen to Me?

The headlines in newspapers throughout small towns and large cities across America are often filled with news items that are guaranteed to evoke our curiosity. These curiosities are usually based on what we find most interesting to us. As a dog behaviorist, I often mill about the classifieds to see both the dogs that are available for sale and browse through the listings of services that cater to animals. I also look for upcoming events which reference relationship building with my dog that will benefit us both, especially a controlled event that involves other responsible dog guardians. Therefore, the newspaper serves as a great source of information involving these types of events. However, although there is generally good information about dogs, disturbing stories particularly those dealing with dog bites
often steal the headlines. Dog bites throughout our country have resulted in severe injury and even death. Ironically, most of these injuries and deaths are often preventable. Therefore, education about behavior which precedes the bite and sources of information on steps to take to prevent them is a necessity that could potentially save the life of both you and those around you. In 2008, according to a statistic reported by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), 4.7 million people received dog bites, a few causing fatalities. In 2007 according to the Hawaiian Humane Society, of the 200,000 dogs that are owned, there were 207 reported dog bites, accounting for 1 percent of the dog population. Although local statistics show a rarity in bites,

few cases go unreported, likely increasing the percentage. Two cases that have made headlines were bites that resulted in the deaths of 17 month old Truston Liddle of Kauai in 2004 and 2 month old Iokepa Liptak of Waianae in 2008. Both boys were killed by dogs they were acquainted with. With Liddle’s belonging to a next door neighbor and Liptak’s being a pet belonging to his immediate family. Understanding what causes dogs to bite or attack is just as important as preventing it. Also, knowing the precursors- the body language that the dog is presenting, the facial twitches and contortions the dog displays prior to the attack, and your actions that are causing these behaviors can potentially save lives. I will summarize these issues, however consulting a behaviorist in your area is a must if you are concerned about your own dog. A behaviorist can discuss treatment options as well as provide invaluable information about the setup of your home to prevent the likelihood of bites that can possibly occur. Dogs are descendants of wolves and are considered social animals. They communicate with one another using their entire body. Some of the communication that occur during stress can be as discreet as a curled lip or as visually obvious as a snarl or a lunge. The more discreet distress signs serve as a warning for others to keep away. In most cases, a discreet warning precedes the actual attack. The attack happens because the animal has been pushed beyond its threshold and a set of normal behaviors in dealing with its source of stress comes into play. As in the case of the two fatalities listed as well as other attacks which happened in Oahu and the rest of the nation, multiple bite wounds happened mostly around the areas around the head and neck. Ironically, when dogs engage one another in a fight, most of the wounds inflicted also happen around the head and neck area. There is always a reason for attacks. Most of the clients I have dealt with in the

past often say that the dog “bit me for no reason”. Upon close examination after listening to their claim and simulating events with the dog that led to aggression, I always find warning signs that the dog owners miss. The dogs that I have dealt with in the past have always preceded their discomfort of a situation with very low level warning signs. Knowing this threshold is the key for a behaviorist to help with treatment options for the dog. In an ideal world, I know that we would all walk our dogs twice a day, for 30 minutes to an hour each time. Unfortunately, the world we live in is not always ideal; in fact, it's sometimes downright inconvenient! When harsh weather hits, or circumstances make it difficult or impossible to venture outside for physical exercise, don't despair! There are activities that you can enjoy with your dog right in the comfort of your own home.

Treadmill The treadmill is a fantastic and very convenient way for your dog to get the exercise from the all-important walk without leaving home. Although not a full-time replacement for the walk, the treadmill can be used to supplement daily exercise, or, in the case of bad weather, substitute it for a short period. Remember to take it slow and allow your dog to get accustomed to the treadmill before leaping right into a running regimen. Once your dog has the hang of it, don't be surprised if you enter the room one morning to find him sitting expectantly, waiting to be allowed to play with it! Practice Calm Submission with Basic Commands Your dog's physical needs aren't the only aspect of him that requires fulfilling. He has psychological needs, too! One activity that doesn't demand a lot of room to move is the practice of basic training commands. Giving 30

ergy and strengthen the bond that you share. Remember to keep a bag of his favorite treats on hand as a reward for calm submission… when he responds to a command with the correct behavior, that's the right time to give affection!
Toys and Games There is a wide range of toys and games for dogs that have been carefully engineered specifically to engage and improve cognitive functions. Most of these toys involve an incentive like a treat or a provocative scent to keep the dog interested and to reward him for playing. Check with your local pet retail stores and online for the kinds of toys you can use to make keeping your dog psychologically fulfilled into a game!
Use the Stairs A stairway is a great place to give your dog a physical challenge. You can begin by having one person at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. Each of you can call him
