WATER/SWIM: Closely supervise your dog around any water, especially running streams no matter how rapid. Current and moss can cause a fall. NOT ALL DOGS CAN SWIM! Have a life jacket that fits your dog. They are becoming more inexpensive to purchase. NEVER throw or force your dog into the water. This may develop into a fear of water. Taking your dog into the water for the first time? Start out in calm, shallow water. Encourage your dog with a toy or treats. Praise them for even taking a step in. If your dog is still unsure, bring along a dog pal that is experienced around the water. Having another dog may help with the confidence needed to encourage your dog. NEVER spray a dog in the face with water. Even if they love it! Gulping amounts of air and water may cause bloat. Are you aware of the seriousness of bloat? Bloat can occur when you allow your dog to exercise within 2 hours of eating. Large breed and/or deep-chested dogs or puppies are prone to bloat when they: - Gulp air (while eating/drinking quickly) - Drink large amounts of water rapidly or immediately after a meal.

KUMA CARLOS CHAN FALL 2011 COVER MODEL

Congratulations Kuma Carlos Chan, our Fall 2011 cover model! Kuma is a 6-month-old Shiba Inu from Honolulu that charmed our public finalist voters and our cover model panel. When we first called Kuma’s pet parent Terry Chan to inform her that her dog was the winner, she was over the moon! Terry had this to say about her magnificent doggie: “Kuma Carlos Chan was born in Maui and now lives in Honolulu. He loves to go to the beach, but only to dig in the sand, ” says Terry. “He loves to run and romp around at the dog parks. His favorite dog parks are the Hawaii Kai and Humane Society dog parks, which he frequents almost daily. He loves to go on hikes, chasing after lizards and birds, and overall loves to be outside. He loves to eat homemade, home cooked foods, but ultimately loves anything fish.” “Kuma Carlos... is amazing, touches the heart of everyone that meets him, is outgoing and social, and loves to make friends. He loves to make friends on his walks and thinks everyone wants to be his friend... because usually they do!” If you would like your pet to be the next Hawaii Pet cover model, please visit www.hawaiipetnetwork.com & submit a photo today!

SAYING GOODBYE

MAKING THE DECISION OF { BY BRENDA K SMITH DVM }

EUTHANASIA

Choosing euthanasia for your cherished dog or cat is one of the hardest decisions one will ever make. It is also one of the kindest decisions one can make in the face of an ailing or suffering pet. It is a very personal decision, but you may always seek guidance from your family, friends, and veterinarian.

A Hui Hou Kawela, Hawaii Pet Magazine’s Mascot & Inspiration Dec. 2000-Dec.2010

When is the correct time to choose euthanasia? This is a difficult question to answer, and there is no right or wrong answer. Many clients feel as if they are betraying the trust of their pet by choosing euthanasia. Others regret not making the decision sooner, feeling they allowed their beloved pet to experience undue suffering. The following are typical reasons to need to consider euthanasia: • Severe injuries from which a pet may not recover or that will severely lessen the quality of life. • Unresolvable behavioral issues such as aggression. Most can be successfully treated by a trainer or behaviorist with or without the help of pharmaceuticals, and euthanasia should only be considered as a last resort. • Terminal illness such as kidney failure or cancer. • Severe pain that does not respond to medication. • A serious health condition that is not treatable within the family budget. When these issues first arise, it is very helpful to find out as much as possible about the disease or condition. Your veterinarian as well as the internet are good sources. Is treatment available for my pet's condition? What is the life expectancy with or without treatment? What are the potential side-effects of treatment? What will my pet's quality of life be with or without treatment? Can my family afford treatment? Am I able to treat my pet at home with the needed med-

pets can respond differently to treatment. For instance, some cats with kidney disease or dogs with heart disease can be maintained for months to years with medical treatment. Others have done such a good job of hiding their disease that once it is discovered, the damage is so severe that the pet does not respond to treatment at all. Some are so difficult to medicate, that the stress of trying is worse than a better quality yet shorter life. Often the final decision is an issue of quality of life. To determine this, it usually helps to think of your pet’s three favorite things. This could be receiving treats, greeting you at the door, or playing with a favorite toy. When he/she is not doing at least two of these, it is a sign that the quality of life is diminishing. If your pet is no longer willing to eat even treats, or is in severe pain, the quality of life is usually very poor. You know your pet the best, and in the end can usually tell when your beloved pet has given up or is not enjoying life any longer. Be proud that you have provided your pet with a good home and good care for its lifetime, whatever the length may be. When the end is near, a quietly and gently assisted passing can make a difficult time one of peace and compassion. Dr. Brenda Smith founded Cherished Pet Home Euthanasia Service in appreciation of the

ications? How painful is this condition? Will my schedule allow me

need for families to be able to spend their last moments with their pet in the comfort, pri-

to treat my pet? For instance, can I be home twice daily to give in-

vacy, and familiarity of their own home or their pet's favorite place. More information as

sulin, or do I travel for work? It is also important to remember that
