Einstein

Congratulations Einstein, Hawaii Pet Magazine’s fall Hometown: Honolulu, Oahu cover model! Einstein is an 18 month old Bichon Frise from Honolulu that has brought joy to his family. “About a year ago, my grandpa became ill,” says owner Tad Ogi. “To lift his spirits and help him get better, we bought Einstein, a Bichon Frise. Einstein has brought joy and love into my grandpa's life ever since. Einstein deserved to be the next cover model because of all that he has done to lift my grandpa's spirits. Though he might be a trouble maker (anything from eating rubber bands to never sharing the blankets at night), 'Einy' is truly one of the best things that ever happened to my grandpa.”

We received a whopping 225 submissions for our Fall cover model search -- the most to date! After resizing and posting all of the photos online, these pets attracted fans from around the world. The number of votes slowed down the site at times, but our pet fans never wavered in their support. Comments for each photo ranged from inspirational to stories extolling the virtues of a pet. We’re happy to report that pet owners voted for both their pets and other submission, showing the true aloha spirit throughout the voting process. After the public chose our top finalists, our staff had the difficult task of choosing one winner out of the bunch. This was our closest staff cover model vote to date, and we’re happy to announce Einstein as our cover model for this issue. We wish that we could feature all of the pets in this issue, but unfortunately don’t have the space. Please visit www.hawaiipetnetwork.com to view all of their photos and stories.

WINTER PET COVER MODEL SEARCH

Does your pet have star quality? Submit one high resolution picture of your pet on www.hawaiipetnetwork.com by October 1, 2009. The public will vote online for our finalists and the cover model will be chosen by our staff from the finalists.

Cover Model Finalists We’d like to congratulate our finalists and thank all of our pet parents and voters for their participation. Each of these finalists deserve their own cover! Who’s your favorite? View more pet photos throughout this issue or visit www.hawaiipetnetwork.com.

DVENTURES IN

DOGSITTING

By Tammy Goodreau • Doggie Adventures and Training • (808) 551-7994 • www.doggieadventuresandtraining.com

If you are looking for a moderate to advanced hike I recommend taking an Adventure along Ka’iwa Ridge to the Kailua pillboxes, also known as the Lanikai bunkers. The two pillboxes were built by the military in World War II to help keep a watchful eye on the Pacific. The trailhead is on Kaeleulu Drive in Lanikai, it is opposite of Mid-Pacific Country Club. Remember, this is a residential area, so please be respectful of the homeowners. I’ve taken many dogs on this hike, it can be challenging in the beginning due to the steep slippery slope. At various points I’ve 10

had to lift small or older dogs up over a boulder. For agile and fit dogs it’s wonderful to see them scurry over boulders and other obstacles without hesitation. As mentioned the most difficult portion of this task is the first 100 yards, where you will have a steep and dusty climb that can get really slippery when wet. For your first time, it is best to pick a dry day and wear some good hiking shoes. Slippers are not the best idea for this trail. And remember, you will be hiking in and out the same way and the descent can be just as tricky! However, once you get passed this initial section, the trail

tends to level out a bit and become more of a moderate hike. All the dogs I have brought here love the hike and scramble through the tall grass, climb rocks and even chase butterflies. Having multiple dogs encourages games of chase around the brush and hide-and-goseek. To add extra exercise and training to my Adventurers I place the dogs on a long leash to encourage them to run ahead. As they run ahead I ask them to come back to me to receive a tasty treat, I then quickly encourage them to run ahead again. Doing this exercise many times during the Adven-

days, you can even make out Haleakala on Maui. Along the ridge you are also treated to wonderful ocean breezes. The trades blow off the ocean and help to make the hike cool in temperature despite the open sun. An important note: There is no shade on this hike so if you take your dog I suggest you go early in the morning, late in the afternoon or on an over cast day.

ture helps to train a reliable recall plus encourages the dogs to receive more exercise. During this hike you will come across a breathtaking view of the windward coast. To the left you will view Kailua Town. As your eyes continue to scan the coast they will brush across the Mokulua Islands, Waimanalo, Molokai, and on the clearest of

It’s important to always bring water for both you and your dog. During these hot summer months I bring extra water to pour over the dogs to ensure they do not over heat. I have also found cooling bandanas and vests to be beneficial in keeping the dogs cool. There is a leash law in Hawaii so your dogs must remain on their leashes at all times. And of course do not forget your doggie clean up bags! For the humans I suggest wearing sturdy shoes, long lightweight pants due to

Local Pet News Oahu SPCA

The Oahu SPCA was recently formed, “to end the unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals, and improve the quality of life for all animals.” This summer, they learned that Animal Haven’s founder and owner had passed away, leaving over 300 animals at her Leeward Coast property. Oahu SPCA mobilized volunteers, rescued the animals and found forever homes for many of these pets. This was the largest recorded animal rescue mission in Hawaii’s history and we commend all of the organizers and volunteers. Oahu SPCA is still looking for homes for some of these pets. Learn more about how to adopt, donate or volunteer at www.oahuspca.org.

Help Cats & Dogs Fight

END-OF-SUMMER BLUES

Submitted by Jacquelyn Leblanc for the Hawaiian Humane Society• www.hawaiianhumane.org

Summer is ending and that can mean back to school for the kids or teenagers moving away to college. This can be a big adjustment for the pets as they get used to much more time alone. With the upheaval of careers, kids in transition and extra curricular after-school activities, it can be hard to keep your pets’ needs a priority—especially since they can’t speak our language. “Lots of exercise and quality play time can help both dogs and cats,” says Hawaiian Humane Society’s animal care manager Mary Tashiro. “The more physical exercise, the more endorphin release you can provide, and that’s all good,” she says. It’s also important to remember that your pets feed on your own emotional state. If you’re depressed a b o u t your child going off to college, your pet will sense that. Getting out and walking your lonesome dog is good therapy for both of you. If you face the prospect of a child going back to school or leaving the house, start preparing your dog sooner rather than later, especially if your child and dog share a particularly close bond. “If your child was your pet’s primary companion, and your child is now gone, it’s not uncommon for pets to get the blues,” Tashiro says. “Increasing physically activity with more playtime and petting for cats and exercise outside for dogs will help ease the transition. Get the dog used to being walked

or played with by other members of the household long before school starts.” You also can provide comfort by having the child or adult who’s going away leave behind a worn piece of clothing such as a Tshirt. Having the scent of his favorite person around will help your dog relax. Similar techniques work with cats. Have another member of the family try to approximate their routine, Tashiro says, including feeding the cat at the same time, playing with the cat at the same time and in the same ways, and letting the cat sleep w i t h someo n e

else if it was used to sleeping in the bed of its favorite person. For pets left alone most of the day, there are many things you can do to make the time more enjoyable. Make your departure and return as nonchalant as possible. Install a pet door so they have access to the indoors and outdoors. Leave a television or radio on for sound comfort. Hire someone in your neighborhood to stop by during the day and take your dog for a walk. Make available some of their favorite toys only when you leave the house. Dogs adore treat-filled toys that keep them working

while you’re gone. Sign up for doggie day care for as many days as your budget permits so your dog can enjoy the company of other pets and people. With a little creativity and compassion, you can help your pets beat the back to school blues. Get more pet advice at www.hawaiianhumane.org or visit the Hawaiian Humane Society located at 2700 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96826. Phone: 808-9462187.

Local breed clubs make a difference when searching for a healthy puppy By Theresa Donnelly, Secretary, Boxer Club of Hawaii

Finding the perfect dog can often be a time-consuming process. To assist with the search, Hawaii has quite a number of AKCaffiliated dog clubs that can point people in the right direction. Of course, one way to find a pet is to rescue an unwanted dog. There are millions of dogs that are euthanized each year in the United States due to never finding a permanent home. Many reports show that perfectly healthy dogs are put down because the room in a shelter cannot support the number of unwanted pets. According to the National Council on Pet Population and Policy, nearly four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year, more than half of all animals that are taken in. Adoption is a way to give a pet another chance at a forever home. To assist with adoption, Hawaii has several resources, including local humane societies and no-kill rescues, such as Friends for Life and Hawaii Dog Foundation. However, many people want a purebred because they like the traits of certain dogs and generally have their hearts set on a particular breed. Often, people look to the online classifieds and newspapers, but one resource that may be overlooked is the local breed clubs. Why go to a local breed club? Well, for starters, most clubs are experts about a particular breed. Many of its members show

sources these clubs can provide, but not the only function of the club. Many breed club members are experts in the genetic health conditions of a particular breed and can direct people to resources for health testing information. For example, the American Boxer Club’s Web site devotes a page with the recommended health tests for Boxers in breeding programs. A reputable breeder is concerned with placing healthy puppies in loving homes and will ensure their dogs pass genetic health tests. The Boxer is prone to heart issues, so there are DNA tests and a dog can wear a halter monitor for 24 hours, which tests for heart abnormalities. “What most companion dog Boxer Club of Hawaii at the Makapuu lighthouse trail owners don’t realize is that many of they can have a significant impact on the the conformation breeders / fanciers test long-term health and welfare of the dog. their dogs for known diseases like hip dysThe best chance of a happy, healthy, stable, plasia or thyroid issues prior to breeding long-lived puppy is from a breeder who their dogs to ensure that the resultant litter considers health, structure and tempera- is as genetically free of disease as possible,” ment to be of equal importance,” writes said Darlene Sawamura, Secretary of the Shetland Sheepdog Club of Hawaii. national dog club, you can find the health issues affecting the breed and what screenings should be done. This process is much more extensive than a vet check, but will help to ensure one has a life-long companion. Many breeders may think this step is unnecessary, but if the tests are available and can reduce the likelihood of a genetic disease, isn’t that a better option than no testing? Local dog clubs have an obligation to educate the public and, in fact, it is mandated by the AKC before a club can be approved to have a dog show. Each club must prove that they have conducted breed education outreach to include events such as training classes, breed seminars, new exhibitor mentoring programs (for those interested in showing their dog) and breeder referral service. “What has been really valuable to me about joining a dog club is the opportunity to share information with other dog owners, discuss other people’s experiences and get information on specific Hawaii issues, like transporting a dog into Hawaii,” said

ONLY REWARD CALM BEHAVIOR Owners should ignore their pet if he or she greets them excessively upon arriving home, or when exhibiting other attentionseeking behaviors. Only when the dog has settled down and is calm should the owner then reward the dog with a treat or other form of positive reinforcement. This teaches the dog that it will be rewarded for the desirable (i.e., calm) behavior. Owners need to initiate interactions with their pet only when he or she is calm.

NO MORE DRAMA WHEN YOU COME AND GO Donʻt make a big deal of coming or going, don’t even say "good-bye" when leaving or greeting your dog upon return. Distract your pet with a treat or toy 20 to 30 minutes before your departure. A Kong toy filled with peanut butter or a puzzle toy can help maintain distraction for a prolonged period. Ignore your pet from that point and simply leave without speaking when it is time to go. Consider leaving a treat that takes some time to consume, just before you leave. Be aware, however, that anxious

dogs frequently do not eat when alone until the anxiety begins to become more managed. At that point, these items can begin to be more helpful. for this purpose. Once the pet is able to be comfortable and relaxed in its special place, the owner should start to gradually increase his or her distance from the dog, but still keep within its sight. The owner can also desensitize the dog to “departure cues,” for example by putting on work clothes, but then not leaving for work, or by picking up the car keys without actually going out of the house. As the pet becomes more comfortable and relaxed, the owner can increase the time and distance from the dog while it is settled in its special place. The owner can begin by briefly leaving the room for several seconds, then graduate to longer and longer periods “out of sight” from the pet. It is important the owner does not try to increase these time periods too quickly, as the pet may relapse. Should this happen, the owner should “backtrack” to the departure time and distance that does not cause anxiety in the dog, then proceed from that point. Dog appeasement pheromone is another method to help dogs with Separation Anxiety. The material released is a geneti-

cally engineered pheromone normally secreted by “mother” dogs to their puppies as a message telling them to relax and that “everything is all right.” The pheromone is odorless to humans. A pump spray is also available but the diffuser continuously releases its message to hopefully keep the anxious dog calm. The use of medication is another method used to overcome separation anxiety. The goal is to use the medication on a temporary basis to relieve the dog's suffering and help the dog relax enough to benefit from the behavior modification, which is provided by people. Currently, two medications, Clomipramine and Fluoxetine are FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of separation anxiety in the dog. This is a serious condition because unresolved behavioral concerns have lead to outdoor banishment, relinquishment, or euthanasia. If you should have any questions regarding your pets Separation Anxiety, be sure to have your Veterinarian assist you and your pet.

KIDS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Submitted by the Hawaii Dog Foundation. www.hawaiidogfoundation.org

With the back to school season upon us, our thoughts turn to the lessons that our children will learn in the classroom. Will I be able to help my daughter with her advanced calculus homework? Did I remember to label all of my son’s crayons? What time do we have to leave home to get to school on time? In the midst of this frenzy, it is easy to forget that there are many lessons in life that our children learn outside of the classroom. One of the most important life lessons any child can learn is kindness to their four legged friends. Think that your child is too young to make a difference in the life of the dogs of the Hawaii Dog Foundation? Here are some ways that even the smallest keiki can help us fulfill our goal of “no more homeless dogs”:

DOGGIE DRIVE Kids can ask friends or family for new or gently used doggie toys, leashes and collars for our dogs to use while they are in foster care as well as blankets, towels and sheets that we use when transporting dogs to various locations. Encourage your toddler to transiDaisy tion to the “big bed” by having him or her donate his crib sheets to the doggies. How about collecting used sleeping bags or mats at the end of the school year from your child’s preschool or kindergarten?

“GREEN” FUN-RAISING Encourage your kids to save the planet

child will surely feel proud and happy when he or she introduces the special guest “barker”, a formerly homeless HDF dog, to his or her classmates.

and the doggies by participating in some of our “green” fundraising activities. How about having a fun scavenger hunt with the kids at home, at work or at tutu’s house for used cell phones and printer toner? Have the kids sort your HI-5 recyclables (and secretly improve their math skills) and donate the proceeds to HDF. Instead of cash for clunkers, how about clunkers for canines? Donate your used car to HDF and make the day of any truck crazy kid who’ll be treated to a tow truck show right at home.

INVITE HDF TO SCHOOL HDF offers humane educational programs for children of all ages featuring two-legged and fourpawed volunteers. Your

Throughout the year, there are many opportunities for the entire family to work side-by-side as HDF volunteers. For example, kids can help out at instore Meet-and-Greets or other venues by handing out HDF brochures while parents help process donation forms and adoption or foster applications. Families can also help out at HDF fundraisers such as car washes or special events like the annual blessing of the animals. Of course, our favorite way for the whole family to volunteer is to sign up to provide doggie foster care. Whether it is for just a few days or for a longer term, getting the children involved with a wonderfully loving dog on a daily basis will surely lead to rewarding experiences that will last forever.

POOCHIE POSSE If you kept up with the proposed pit bull ban earlier this year, you couldn’t help but notice that some of the most vocal and effective protesters were children who feared that their beloved “bullies” would be taken away from them. While these kids may not have understood the political ramifications of breed specific legislation, it was clear that they did understand what impact the proposed bill would have on their families. They stood side-by-side with their parents at rallies, spent hours making their hawaiipetmagazine.com | fall 2009

own protest signs, and spoke from the heart about the possible loss of their beloved dogs. As the dogs cannot speak for themselves, it is imperative that those of us who love them speak for them when help is needed. Your family can serve as a “poochie posse” and support dog-friendly issues that you or your children believe in. Invite friends who are looking for a dog to consider adopting from a rescue organization like HDF. Stay informed by visiting the HDF website and blog, printing out any articles that are of interest to your kids. Write letters of support or opposition to animal-related legislation (yes, the kids can do this too).

LIFETIME LEARNING Perhaps one of the most important ways a child can help the Hawaii Dog Foundation is to learn all that he or she can about dogs. This is particularly the case when a family is considering welcoming a dog into the home. Adopting a dog is a commitment that lasts a lifetime which is why HDF emphasizes finding FOREVER

families for our beloved dogs. While that adorable fuzzy face on the HDF website might have stolen your family’s hearts, make sure you do your research before bringing him or her home permanently. Read all you can about his or her breed, speak to the foster family to find out about the “real dog”, introduce him or her to the kids and your other dogs at a Meet-andGreet, schedule an overnight or longer visit to see if he or she fits with your schedule and your environment. The entire family should come together to make a well-informed and well-reasoned decision. Any less is not fair to you and to the dog. The first step in the journey of lifetime doggy learning begins at the Hawaii Dog Foundation website (www.hawaiidogfoundation.org). There you will find everything you need to know about our dogs, our programs and our organization. There are many fun and interesting articles for the entire family, as well as the always popular photo listings of dogs available for adoption. View the adoptable dogs in this article online at www.hawaiidogfoundation.org.

“Back to School.” Just the words bring up the memory of Rodney Dangerfield stepping onto campus in a vivid pair of golfing pants. Rodney Dangerfield himself has always seemed to remind me of that painting with the dogs playing poker. They couldn’t seem to ever get respect. Everyone in the pet loving world knows that dogs deserve every bit of our respect. Therefore, I would like to point out a few back to school reminders so that all receive the respect they deserve. The first tip in our back to school list is courtesy. The easiest way of showing courtesy is by always remembering to carry disposable bags whenever you are out walking your dog. Not only are you being a responsible pet owner by preparing for future deeds, but you are also ensuring that public places that allow dogs continue to do so. The second tip to remember is safety. Whenever you are out walking your pet remember to keep him or her on a leash, unless in a designated off leash area. This will definitely help keep any unseen events from growing into a out of control situation. Lastly, for our back to school tips I would like to remind everyone to simply have fun. It doesn’t matter what you do, from playing fetch on the beach; to having a wonderful hike in the mountains, just getting out is happiness enough for your pet. While out with your pet if you remember to be courteous, safe, and have fun you will be at the top of the class in pet ownership and thoroughly respected and loved by your pet. SUMMER IS OVER?

What do I do with Fido? Submitted by Allen Daniels • Paws University • www.pawsuniversity.com

Unfortunately for most people, summer has quickly ended. School-aged children are back in school and a major disruption in the household routine has occurred. No longer is anyone sleeping in or spending most of the day at home. At sunrise, the house has now come to life and the hustle and bustle of the preparation of both work and school is at times an overwhelming one. Time is always of the essence and most are hard pressed to meet that requirement. Understandably they focus on getting out of the house in time to avoid any costly delay. As quickly as it all started, the house has become a quiet and desolate place, void of any familiar sounds and activity, however there is one important family member left behind and they are all alone. No one experiences these changes as

much as their dog Fido. During the summer break, Fido has grown accustomed to greeting everyone in the household and waking them with his warm-hearted licks. Fido had also found great joy in playing with his humans and spending time with them in front of the TV as well as going for walks and playing in the yard. This routine during the summer was the center of what he found joyful and suddenly all has come to a screeching halt for him. Being left alone with nothing to do leaves Fido no choice but to find an activity that will pass the time by waiting for his humans to come home. Unfortunately, this can possibly lead to behaviors that their humans don’t care for often getting worse with time. These behaviors include: unwanted barking, digging, urinating and defecating in

the household and destruction of personal belongings, all of which can be considered separation anxiety. Although a few humans can have the luxury to be with their pets during the day, most unfortunately do not. Providing your dog with ample exercise and activity can alleviate most potential problems that can occur during your absence. However, since most dogs’ physical requirements are much higher than our own, what we consider a taxing exercise for us may be considered just a warm up for the dog. Most dogs are left with too much energy and most will find other non-productive and destructive things to do when they are alone. However, there are options to be considered that can satisfy your dog’s physical and mental needs that can alleviate a potential disaster. Doggy daycare was created to address the issues of a bored dog and has become a hit for people searching for a positive activity for their pet. The basic concept of daycare is to provide your dog with an activity that satisfies both their physical and mental needs. Physically speaking, your dog gets to run and play with other dogs while their activity is monitored by carefully trained staff. Their mental needs are addressed by the interaction that takes place while in a pack setting. The dogs learn the essential skills of socialization which includes pack hierarchy as well as proper mannerisms with regard to the interaction with their human caretakers. During daycare an abundance of natural behaviors occur which is equally exciting to the dog and the humans caring for them. Shelley Cole, the manager of Paws University on the Big Island of Hawaii, says that what she finds most exciting from her experience from a dog’s perspective is that “The dogs benefit most from their interaction with compatible playmates”. She also feels that “safety and fun activities for the dogs are essential in creating a positive experience for the dog”. With that said, most facilities require a

pre-screening to insure that a dog is compatible with both other dogs and people. In addition, a facility will include separate play yards for different sized dogs as well as a quiet area for the older dogs. Each yard is filled with various play structures and portable pools that provide the dogs other options besides playing with one another. The day can be very busy for the dog and certainly provides more than enough exercise to satisfy them. Most dogs will return home exhausted from their fun day of play with their friends. Paws University on the Big Island was the first to offer doggy daycare in the State of Hawaii and has been in operation since 1999. Since then, several impressive facilities on Oahu have opened to serve both you and your dogs needs. Contact a facility near you and see what they have to offer. Fido no longer has to be left alone during the day and we can be satisfied that he is in caring and capable hands.

1st Annual Weiner Derby& HHS Canine Game Day

The 2009 Hawaii Wiener Derby was held at the Hawaiian Humane Society's K-9 Playday at Thomas Square on May 23rd and it was a race day to remember. Dozens of dachshunds displayed their athleticism at this first annual event. It wasn’t just about the weiners -- dogs of all shapes and sizes stopped by to play canine games and lounge in the sun. Cesar’s Beach Tips By Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer • www.cesarmillaninc.com

I grew up in Mazatlan, Mexico, so, to me, the beach is home! I love to bring my pack to the Southern California coast at the end of a week of good behavior. Every pack member experiences the beach in a different way. Some head straight for the water. Others love the opportunity to get their paws dirty. And then there are those who just like to kick back and enjoy the sun. Whatever your dog's preference, here are a few tips to make the beach a fun and safe experience.

lar is ineffective and can also irritate your dog's skin. Consult your veterinarian to find the best solution.

A trip to the beach isn't the time to punch out. Your dog may be having so much fun that he loses track of how tired, hot, or thirsty he is. It is up to you to watch for signs of dehydration or over-exhaustion. Sand and heat can make a normal exercise routine more strenuous. Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, call your dog back to rest in a shady spot.

Be respectful of other visitors. Whether canine or human, other visitors to the beach may not appreciate your dog's company. Make sure to keep your dog in check.

Know the local laws. Some beaches do not accept dogs. Others require that they be on-leash at all times. Find out before you head out.

Prepare. You may not be aware that, like humans, dogs need protection from the sun. Talk to your veterinarian about protective goggles and canine sunblock.

Be confident in your pack leadership. For a dog to get the full benefit of a beach visit, off-leash (where permitted) is ideal. But remember, the beach is full of interesting scents of the sea life there. This can send your dog into a very primal state. If you don't have your leadership skills down pat, you could lose your dog.

Protect your dog from fleas. This is not an issue most people associate with the beach, but sand fleas are prevalent in some areas. Be aware that a wet flea col-

Be vigilant. Remember that many items washed ashore, like fishing lines, litter, plant-life, and dead fish, may not be safe for your dog. When he goes exploring, keep a close eye on the objects he finds.

Let your dog dig! This is the perfect spot to let your dog try to make that tunnel to China he's been dreaming of.

Check conditions. Sea lice, jellyfish, undercurrents, and rip tides all pose just as much of a threat to dogs as they do to humans. Before you let your dog roam, verify with a lifeguard that the environment is safe.

Keep your dog hydrated. Make sure your dog has access to clean, fresh water—and never let your dog drink salt water. It can make him sick.

Be aware of your dog's physical and emotional state.

Pick up after your dog! Help keep the water clean and the beach pleasant for other visitors.

Give your dog a bath. If possible, give him a good rinse with fresh water before leaving the beach. When you get home, make sure to wash your dog immediately! Chemicals from sea water can be harmful to your dog's coat and health. Check out more of Cesar Milan’s tips at www.cesarmillaninc.com. Mahalo Cesar!
