KU LAW
University of Kansas School of Law 2024 ANNUAL REPORT
University of Kansas School of Law 2024 ANNUAL REPORT
As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the steadfast support and commitment of KU Law’s alumni and friends, like you, who make our continued success possible. Thanks to your generosity, KU Law remains a national leader in public legal education. This year, we are proud to celebrate our ranking among the Top 25 Public Law Schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, as well as our position as the No. 6 Best Value Law School according to The National Jurist. These honors reflect not only the strength of our programs but also the impact of your support, which enables us to offer substantial scholarships, minimize student debt and enhance our innovative bar exam preparation initiatives.
Your commitment ensures that a KU Law education remains accessible and transformative, empowering our students to serve their communities, pursue meaningful opportunities and embark on their careers with confidence. In this annual report for fiscal year 2024, which concluded on June 30, you will find highlights of the ways your contributions have made a difference, along with a comprehensive list of our valued donors.
With your continued support, we aim to be an integral part of KU’s “Ever Onward” capital campaign with a goal of raising $2.5 billion to advance KU’s mission. As part of this historic endeavor, we are excited about the opportunities this campaign will open up for KU Law. If you would like to learn more about the law school’s priorities for the campaign, visit kueveronward.org or contact me directly. I would love to hear from you.
Thank you for your vital role in the KU Law community and for your enduring commitment to our students and their success.
Stephen W. Mazza Dean and Professor of Law
MKilar Otte Hays, KS JD candidate, 2026
The first thing I learned as a freshman was that the Jayhawk Spirit touches every corner of the globe, and at its core is the call for Jayhawks to help one another. This idea has rung through in every aspect of my journey as a KU student. Receiving a scholarship is just another great example of the spirit that makes KU so special. Personally, it has allowed me the opportunity to attend law school, a dream that would not be possible without it. My scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies while being able to continue the tradition of helping others through public interest work, student organizations and fostering outside camaraderie with classmates. I will forever be grateful to the donors who have made this dream possible for me and other KU Law students.”
“Naomi Franklin Lenexa, KS JD candidate, 2025
I chose to attend KU Law because of my scholarship. It has allowed me to focus my attention fully on getting the most out of my law school experience, including law review board, moot court and mock trial, pro bono projects, externing in federal court and leading a student organization, to name just a few. KU Law offers incredible career development opportunities for students willing to dig in and make the most of their three years in Green Hall. My scholarship has enabled me to do just that. I am forever grateful to the donors who invested in me and helped me launch my legal career.”
“
I’m honored to join the KU School of Law as the Robert A. Schroeder Distinguished Professor. I am already using this support to try to help make Kansas and this region more resilient to the many changes affecting its natural resource base, especially the availability of fresh water.”
Robin Kundis Craig | Robert A. Schroeder Distinguished Professor of Law
““Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the Polsinelli Transactional Law Center had a year of unprecedented and phenomenal success. KU Law students won first place in three national transactional law competitions, which I believe makes us the No. 1 transactional law competition program in the country. Our students also had the chance to develop transactional skills by taking courses on renewable energy transactions, the corporate transparency act, due diligence in business transactions and contract drafting, as well as by attending a series of lunch-and-learn discussions featuring leading transactional attorneys.”
Alex Platt | Director, Polsinelli Transactional Law Center | Associate Professor of Law
In 2024, KU Law provided more than $130,000 in funding for summer public interest stipends. Through the support of the Bradley Family, the Bremyer Fund, the Richard L. & Suzanne Sedgwick Bond Fund, the Donald and Esther Atha Giffin Public Interest Law Fund and the Public Interest Law Student Fund, KU Law offers stipends to help students offset the expenses incurred when they take legal positions at employers, including government agencies, legal services providers, prosecution offices, public defense offices, courts and nonprofits.
“I was fortunate to receive a public interest law stipend, which enabled me to intern at the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office. This experience gave me a profound understanding of the criminal justice system and its effects on the community. The stipend allowed me to fully immerse myself in learning about the legal system. During my internship, I had the privilege of working alongside remarkable legal advocates, honing my legal research and writing skills. I am deeply grateful to the donors who support students pursuing public interest legal work.”
Evelyn Manresa-Lozano | McPherson, KS | JD candidate, 2026
“I’m incredibly grateful for the public interest law stipend, and couldn’t have worked at the National Labor Relations Board without it this summer. I’ve always had an immense passion for labor law, and being able to work full-time at the agency without the fear of financial strain allowed me to focus more fully on the experience. This opportunity helped hone my interest in the field, paving the way for me to pursue this dream once I graduate.”
Jake Combs | Olathe, KS | JD candidate, 2025
Receiving a stipend this summer made it possible for me to focus solely on my internship, rather than picking up another position in hospitality. The generosity of the public interest stipend sponsors was so important to me developing and improving on skills and being a productive member of the firm, rather than struggling to separate the internship as a means to an end. Because of the Bradley Fund, my summer internship was more than just a job, and instead allowed me to pursue my passions. ”
Wren Browne | Midland, MI | JD candidate, 2026
