Welcome to the 5th Anniversary Issue of Kultivate Magazine! WOW is all I can say, 5 YEARS!!

There are so many people I would like to thank for helping Kultivate reach this milestone, but I do not have the space to thank them, so I will say thank you to all our artists, advertisers, collaborators, friends, and family that have supported us the past 5 years, we hope that you continue to support the mission and goal of Kultivate for the next 5 years and beyond!

This issue features 55 images from some of the best artists and photographers in second life, SL17B, Grauland, The Hannington Endowment of the Arts, a photo essay on Rosehaven, Lyrical CafĂŠ, DJ Neo Storm, Safari Park & The Happy Hat, Mangyeong. We also have 3 fashion looks you may want to try this summer!

This issue is our largest ever at 340 pages and it demonstrates to me what Kultivate is all about: art, music, fashion, and life!

Of course a person needs strong support and I have that in the form of my beautiful Tempest, who is always there to laugh, dance, and enjoy the art world of Second Life with me! Thank you my darling for the support you have given me from day #1 of our friendship and day #1 of our now loving relationship.

Second Life marks its 17th anniversary in 2020, with a week-long celebration of music, entertainment, art and more across 23 regions, seven of which are given over to exhibits from Second Life residents and through the companion Shop and Hop event.

Events officially kick-off on Friday, June 19th, with the full opening of the SL17B regions, where celebrations will start with the SL17B Music Fest, and the Shop & Hop event. However, members of the Second Life Birthday in-world group can access the SL17B regions from Thursday, June 18th.

The following is intended to offer an overview to the main SL17B regions, including SLurls to core locations, and offer an overview to some of the events.

In addition, the core facilities also include: •

First presented in 2018, the region-wide Tapestry of Time presents visitor with a walkthrough of Second Life’s history from 2003 through to the present day using images, text and videos. True, not everything has been recorded, but there’s enough within the region to be of interest to the historically minded.

THE GIFTING AREA FUN FAIR

SL17B SHOP & HOP As well as the SL17B celebratory regions, there’s also the Shop & Hop event. Opening on June 19th and running through until July 12th, 2020, it takes place in the familiar Second Life shopping event mall. For SL17B, Shop & Hop covers 10 shopping regions, each with 20 stores per region, making for a total of 200 merchants in all. Each merchant will have at least a 20% discount on all items, and some will have a gift people can pick up for free either at their Sop & Hop store or at the SL17B Gifting Area fun fair.

ADVICE ON A BETTER EXPERIENCE •

The SL17B regions – celebratory and Shop & Hop can get exceptionally busy. To help ease the pain for you:

•

If you have a high draw distance, reduce it to 128m (or less if required).

•

Turn off shadows in your viewer if you usually have them enabled.

•

Go to Preferences → Graphics and reduce the slider Max # Non-Imposter Avatars to a minimum.

•

Remove texture-heavy HUDs to free-up more texture memory.

•

To assist the simulator, remove unnecessary scripted attachments.

•

If you are using Firestorm and still encountering issues, try going to Preferences Graphics → Rendering and:

•

If you are running a 64-bit version of the viewer, make sure Restrict Maximum Texture Resolution to 512px (will require a viewer restart).

•

Use the Max Texture Quality Level drop-down to set texture rendering quality to Mid. For more information:

LOCATIONS : SAFARI PARK: A SURPRISING ADVENTURE ARTICLE & PHOTOGRAPHY: VANESSA JANE

Sometimes on mainland SL we stumble across treasures that we may expect should be on their own sim offshore. Safari Park on St Martin sim is one of these. The parcel here covers only part of the sim and fits between other parcels but nevertheless draws you in to an absorbing experience and a very believable environment.

When you land at Safari Park you find yourself by an ‘end of the line’ little railroad station, where chickens peck around on the dusty platform. From here there are various paths leading in different directions but I was pulled initially by the sound of distant grunting roars (almost primeval) and following the direction of these I walked through a natural stone arch and was met by the most extraordinary vista.

It was as if an African waterhole had been transplanted into SL. In the background of this area (almost like the interior of a long dead volcanic crater in the wild heart of the African plains), a huge and dramatic waterfall plunges down from great heights. It falls into a small lake, filled with Elephants and Hippopotami bathing. Around the waterhole Antelope and Giraffe and Zebra graze the dry grasslands, watched by prides of lions, awaiting the chance of their next meal.

All of this is observed in turn by groups of monkeys, Rhino, and chimpanzees watching from the trees and rocky outcrops.

If you are brave you can track through this wilderness down to the waters edge, and thence around the lake to a long rope ladder which gives access to a rickety wooden walkway, pinned high on the cliff face. Daring this will give the most amazing views.

There are other less challenging places to see the vista of from, for the less intrepid. There is a wooden observation

tower by the shaded game warden landrover (handy for beating a hasty retreat from lions). While there is a cookfire there and a place to have a snack I would suggest not feeding the nearby monkeys. Near the entrance to the crater is a wooden shack up on a promontory which perhaps could provide the possibility of a longer and safer overnight stay.

This shoreline is a much longer stretch of beach, wild and romantic looking, with seals on rocks, pelicans, cranes and other sea birds. The waves break with a relaxing sound and there are various places to sit and chill including at one end of the beach a small bar. This is a narrow strip behind the St.%20Martin/177/170/23 KM bigger beach area (of which more in a minute). Like several of the areas in Safari Park it is small but beautiful and detailed. Bamboo and vines line the pathway, and one passes groups of monkeys, iguana lizards and a rather scary jaguar. A path leads up to viewing point (from which the shore looks magical).

Hi Loves, I had a chance to interview an awesome DJ I ran into on the grid. DJ Neo Storm, has some of the most inspiring and personal sets I have ever experienced. He agreed to sit down with me in my famous "Superstar" chair and as he settled in, I began my regime of questions we all want to know.

I explained to him that I loved that and he explained to me he thought the world needed more kindness in both worlds Second Life and real life and I agreed.

Happy with that answer I wanted to know, "What in your opinion makes a great DJ?" He said to me, "Honestly, I think a DJ is like being a counselor at times because sometimes people just want to get in a whole new mood or be taken from a bad mood. GALLERY SPOTLIGHT: HANNINGTON ENDOWMENT OF THE ARTS (HEA) ARTICLE: JOHANNES HUNTSMAN PHOTOGRAPHY: INARA PEY & TANSEE

The Hannington Endowment for the Arts (HEA) is a new, communityfostered arts center and group that has been founded to “to unify The Arts and artists in SL by providing a central info location to find all participating art related events and locations .”

Established following the closure of the Linden Endowment for the Arts – with which it has no official connection, being entirely resident supported and run, HEA has been made possible by longtime Second Life resident Hannington Xeltentat, for whom the center and group have been named, and who directly sponsors HEA activities and art installations available at the HEA’s in-world gallery spaces, which are managed by Tansee and available on a grant basis for 1, 3 or 6 months at a time I was able to sit down with curator Tansee to discuss HEA’s mission, goals, and more!

JOHN: So tell me about HEA. When did it come into existence? Why was it formed?

TANSEE: In 2019 upon hearing the possibilities that Linden Endowment For The Arts might continue if presented a feasible plan I formed the Group LEA 2.0. As the time grew nearer to the cessation response from LL was bleak. I put out a group notice as a last ditch effort asking if anyone may know a possible benefactor to continue LEA. I received one response from a man that I had never met named Hannington Xeltentat who I later learned is an art lover in both lives.

Over the months we met and I shared my vision, plan and approach. He agreed and gave me carte blanche to proceed with 6000 free prims dedicated to The Arts. I have always appreciated & participated in "Hive" co-op projects in RL and realized the hexagon shape utilized by bees building their hive was the perfect basis to build an artist hive in SL

JOHN: How do you select the artists for HEA? Tell us about that process.

TANSEE: To launch the project I contacted artists that I had met during my many LEA Grants through the years and asked them if they would like to participate as "launch artists". The word quickly spread.and artists began to inquire. With great success we are full through the spring of 2021. The selection basis that I am solely responsible for is by originality, creativity, concept, design, content and tbh a just a bit of my artistic "gut instinct".

TANSEE: As the original creator, designer, builder and maintenance girl :) of the concept I have been the curator since the birth of HEA in August of 2019.

JOHN: Are you an artist also? If so what type of artwork do you create?

TANSEE: I have limited college (drop-out) _education in art and consider myself a self taught wanna be artist in RL and in SL and love dabbling in all types of art & design creativity in both lives. I am fortunate to have a sizable studio in RL and is being renovated to house my own personal gallery of work. JOHN: Name a piece of artwork that has JOHN: What are the future plans for HEA? TANSEE: We hope to continue to build a solid foundation and representation for The Arts in SL by presenting original, innovative new works by SL artists. 2021 will be an exciting new year for Hannington Endowment for The ARTS with a unique secret project to be announced to the public in the fall. JOHN: How long have you been a curator in SL?

personally moved you and why.

TANSEE: Once again I am moved by several works. There is never one. As an example I feel deeply moved by Cherry Manga's current exhibit at Hannington Endowment for The ARTS. She shows the deep emotion and physical pain associated with a RL disease of endometriosis. To many it can be shocking and difficult to look at but it conjures up emotions within the viewer and that moves me in a good piece of art. When my emotions kick in to high gear upon viewing someone's creation I consider it great artwork.

As I concluded my chat with Tansee, she added: One of the important facts about HEA is the design concept of the physical build. It begins with a hexagon in the center and is based on the world of bees. The Artist Hive Exhibit spaces receive their configuration from that It is an original built in a sim wide 256x256 cylinder. Each hive exhibit area is approximately 1/6 of a sim with the use of 1000 prims. It has been designed using High Graphics and based upon one single center hexagon creating an interesting, geometrically artistic environment. (Some artists may view this as difficult to work with and others consider it a positive artistic challenge.) KM

There is a venue here on the Second Life platform that is full of the Spoken Word Art, Live sax music, live singing and more.

A place that has a framework that sits solidly built on the present day and the history of Art and all cultures are in most ways are explored and respected.

This venue is endearingly titled, The Lyrical Cafe Poetry Pavilion, owned and operated by Kamille R. Kamala since December 7th, 2009. The very first event took place on a tiny 512 plot. And, I expected to have say ten or less to come and spark the beginning of my business venture. But, I was truly amazed when the turnout surpassed all of my expectations and it was standing room only.

I can never express fully how excited this made me and how it was am actual omen to me that I had made the right decision to open its doors and to continue on with my efforts. Needlessly to say, I had to move to a bigger plot and that was the birth of the Lyrical.

Over the years, there have been countless performers who have graced its stage. Some who were even real life celebrities along with some who were famous inworld only.

Regardless of the nature of their professional careers, the Lyrical was lucky to have had them help me to create a great show.

That has always been the main focus of what I have tried to do, is create a very memorable time, full of quality entertainment and build a legacy.

Fast forward to the first year anniversary another packed house with the then popular group called DRUM. This event was so exciting! We had them play their drums with all of the colorful show of lights and tribal sounds being played it was truly breathtaking. I would have to say that until this day that was what I feel the peak of the Lyrical and its popularity.

I cannot count the times I have had someone randomly IM me and tell me that they left Second Life for a while taking a break to concentrate on real life, but when they returned the first thing they looked for was the Lyrical and how excited to know I was still open.

Also, the Lyrical has been known to give many artists their debut on the stage. This includes singers like Melenda Yarrowroot and other famous poets and singers. They explained to me that it was because of the Lyrical they launched their careers and continue on this day to perform.

Let us not forget the Seventh year anniversary with about 72 avatars in attendance. This event lasted hours and hours with several Spoken Word stars and singers. Most memorable was Miss Diva Stone who I came to love her Jill Scott renditions, may she rest in peace.

And, currently, the Lyrical has a special weekly show lineup with a live sax player and singer along with streamed and live poetry/spoken word. We have our regularly scheduled show every Sunday evening at 2pm SLT. In addition, this year the Lyrical was chosen to take part in SL17th Birthday Exhibition on the Incredible sim.
