Health Education Building

Welcome to the University of Kansas Medical Center’s Health Education Building, the new cornerstone of our educational mission. We are extraordinarily proud of the technological advances and educational modalities that this 170,000-square-foot facility offers our campus community. From the beginning, we knew that we wanted a building that provided a dedicated space for the education of our students and would serve as a hub for student life. Because of our firm commitment to interprofessional and interdisciplinary team learning, the building needed to become the primary teaching facility for all three of our schools – health professions, medicine and nursing – and will redefine health science education at KU Medical Center. Designed through a partnership between Helix Architecture + Design and CO Architects, the spaces inside the Health Education Building provide technology-enhanced environments for experiential learning, including large learning studios, active classrooms, a medical simulation center, clinical skills labs, study areas, and spaces that enhance the social and collaborative aspects of learning. The design is inspired by key facets of the building’s purpose: connectivity, identity, a sustainable environment, and transparency. Fun facts about the Health Education Building: • It is designed to meet sustainability standards for energy use, access to daylight, exceptional indoor air quality and views to nature. • Energy use is projected to be 24 percent under state energy guidelines. • Heating and cooling controls are tied to occupancy sensors and automatic set-backs. • All occupied spaces will utilize energy efficient LED lighting. • The general use of glass throughout the building provides views, ample daylighting and a sense of openness to the education process. • The large cantilevered glass cube highlights the medical simulation and clinical skills floors as the heart of the building.
