Design Concept Healing
Under the virus epidemic, the world has changed a lot. Some people are unemployed, some people die, and everyone is affected. Some people slowed down, thinking back to their past lives, and began to pay attention to their health. Many people develop the habit of exercise, such as yoga, in order to heal or strengthen their body psychologically and physically. At the same time, many yoga lovers believe that yoga can help their souls be improved and sublimated to a higher level, and the soul will be healed through this practice. For cats, having a home and an owner who loves it can definitely heal the injuries which suffered when they were wandering. If you have a cat in your home, the owner's happiness will be more and greatly will reduce the feeling of loneliness. They are the most loyal partners, can accompany people through these difficult times, because they are the best listeners, like a very good psychologist.
• For visitors of the park The site will be a window to promote these two clients, visitors will have a chance to know more about yoga and street cat. Especially for families, this is an opportunity to educate children about life and respect animals.
• For cats Cats can take the initiative to contact people, and don’t need to wait for the adopters to visit cats in animal shelters when they are free. Moreover, cats show a natural side in their familiar environment without being nervous at all, making people understand better about cats.
• For Yoga’s students It’s normal for the cat to squeeze or jump on the participant’s back when they try to stretch. Hope that through the class, the participants can feel the cuteness of cats and know more about them, and be a cat's owner, that have a better effect on finding homes for cats.

Design Concept Blurred borders Ask questions about existing design ideas and common sense, and can often create more unique, fresh, and attractive designs. Changes will be interesting, but possibilities are hidden in them. Also, with different suggestions each time, the design and ideas will also
There is no way to keep people in an indoor place forever, although most humans live indoors. The same is true for cats. In residential areas, it’s easy to see neighbors’ cats walking on the railings, and even meowing from the windows and ask you to let them in. Some cats like to stray, wandering in the community in the morning, and
Black or white? Nothing is absolute, whether it is rules, physics, or ideas, the virtual and the real are actually very similar. Spread to this project, the design attaches great importance to the combination of field and atmosphere, it is neither conservative nor radical. It breaks the boundary between subject and object, which treats the site as a complete whole. In this site, people, environment and architecture formed a harmonious field. The boundary here is not disappeared, but it merges with each other. At the beginning of the design, trying to use the brick house as a “window” and developed some changes based on the scenery outside the building, therefore, the design will like a landscape painting.
Old or new? Kengo Kuma, a Japanese architect, is famous for his respect the venue and history, learning from local culture or characteristic natural forms, such as local elements. The building should "disappearance" in front of history, culture, and the environment, it should not an intruder from the ground, nor a tyrant who takes up space, it is a server in a subsidiary status. There is no strong division between the inside and outside of the building, so the boundary between the building and the environment is blurred, or it is a kind of integration.
Idea, form, space Thinking about how to integrate space and nature, architecture is a series of spaces without boundaries, a place that overlaps with the surrounding environment. Therefore, the key point of the design is how to "soften" the rigid boundaries between inside and outside itself, turning the solid line into a "dashed line". Space has changed from a definite structure to a space division, creating a sense of transition.

Design Concept Site Background The Arboretum Cafe The Arboretum is the oldest public park in Nottingham city center. The Arboretum cafe is located at a southwest corner in the park and surrounded by trees and red brick. The red brick building can be traced back to the 1850s when the park opened, the lodge at the entrance of the Arboretum. It has been used as the park keeper’s lodge and the gardeners’ mess, now is a quaint and nice cafe. Those photos show a closer view of the exterior of the building, it comes with some small detail and a sense of history. It consists of two parts, one part is more distinctive and has patterns on the exterior wall; the other part should be built later, although the exterior is constructed with red bricks. This building has cultural value, including traditional craftsman skills and materials. Development and conservation are not opposites. This project seeking how to expand the future usage of the site in a creative way, hoping to develop the building in a sustainable way, while preserving the integrated historical background and architectural value. Therefore, the most original and distinctive part of the brick structure buildings will be preserved, and another part will be rebuilt or extended. Overall, hoping that the building will eventually be transformed into a unique cultural landmark.

Design Concept Style Inspiration Nordic minimalism and Japanese minimalism The difference between minimalism and other styles is simplicity, which is mainly to meet the basic functions and practicality, and there is no excessive decoration. Although they are all minimalist styles, there got some differences between Nordic minimalism and Japanese minimalism. For example, famous brands such as IKEA and MUJI, represent the Nordic minimalism and Japanese minimalism. And the most different difference between Nordic minimalism and Japanese minimalism is the use of colors.
Nordic minimalism The Nordic minimalist style refers to the overall characteristics of the design works of the Nordic country, including Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Norway. The feature of the interior design is simple and clear form, which maximizes the function with the most simplified shape, and the atmosphere is close to nature.
Nordic minimalism is relatively high in color saturation, showing more playful and casualness in life. The intensity of color contrast can still be felt, and the visual of the main point can be quickly grasped.
Japanese minimalism The Japanese minimalist style was deeply influenced by the Zen Buddhism from C.E. 618 to 907. It embodies a kind of aesthetics called wabi-sabi in Japanese. The design of color, function, and shape are respects to nature environment, and every space needs to be as simple and elegant as possible to create the greatest space.
The color Japanese minimalist design is more rigorous and restrained. Generally, there are not too many colors, white, gray, and natural wood colors are common, there is no strong color collision. The coordination and unity of the overall design will be softer and quieter. Crude wooden furniture with clear and smooth lines design is very simple, with the light wood color and some green plant can give people a feeling of far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The lifing style changing is related to the environment and the close era in which we live. In addition, Japan is popular for the ‘Danshari’ (断舍 离) lifestyle, meaning throwing all unnecessary items, the worries and sorrows of daily life will also throw away with the item. Nowadays, with the acceleration of work pace and the gradual increase of pressure, people are beginning to pay more attention to their own life feelings and to relax their self, that becomes what people need most.

Simple plan and section to facilitate thinking about new ideas, roughly divided into underground, first floor and section to express new ideas. The red colour outline is the oldest part of the building, which is the part that hope to keep and not to change in the future, because it represents the historical background of the building and the park. The brown colour outline is a part of building which surrounded by red bricks. This is not the most original building and also slightly different in style from the red colour part, soit might be change or rebuild it in the new design. The green colour outline is the tree and path of the original site, which is a path of the park and hopes not to change in the future design.
Design Planning 1 This idea is very basic, based on the design and planning of existing buildings. From client research, this design combines the special needs of clients, such as veterinary clinics and yoga classes.
17 Yoga Classroom Kendoujou (剣道場) is a hall or place for immersive learning or meditation. This is traditionally in the field of martial arts, but has been seen increasingly in other fields, such as meditation and software development. The term literally means "place of the Way" in Japanese. The design of the yoga classroom is aimed to creates a better organized layout. In here was referred to the space design of Japanese Dojo, because martial arts and yoga have a similar meaning in their own country, as a national quintessence.
The Common area Which faces the main entrance, is the first part that visitors step into. As a shared space for all visitors, there are features of the cat rescue and yoga here, reminding the public what kind of space that they have stepped in. Yoga classroom This is an important part, the place should be large and wide, convenient for students to attend classes. And the office is also next to the classroom, just bhide the door. W.C. and shower W.C. kept in the original space and the shower room is nearby. The shower room is closer to the yoga classroom because the student should be the main user of this facility. The veterinary clinic Includes x-ray room, office, ward and operating room. Considering that it is relatively private and professional, in order to have a relatively quiet and able to control the flow of people, it is arranged on the first floor.

Planning 2
Considering that Cat Rescue is a charity organization for animals, they are committed to providing help to animals, so the addition of a semi-outdoor animal shelter can respond and strengthen their purpose.
This idea is very basic, based on the design and planning of existing buildings. From client research, this design combines the special needs of clients, such as veterinary clinics and yoga classes.
The Common area Which faces the main entrance, is the first part that visitors step into. As a shared space for all visitors, this part must be interesting and have a distinctive corporate image. So, two cat’s hole through the ceiling to the first floor can let the cats walking around in the building. Also, there has a small corner with a glass ceiling, visitors can see the cats when they are staying on the glassing. 25 Yoga Classroom From research, there are different types of yoga, and the required practice environment is also different. Yoga is a kind of exercise that needs the guidance and help of teachers, so one teacher should not teach too much students at the same time, small class teaching will be more suitable. Therefore, this idea considered the design of several yoga classrooms
The Common area Which faces the main entrance, is the first part that visitors step into. As a shared space for all visitors, this part must be interesting and have a distinctive corporate image. So, two cat’s hole through the ceiling to the first floor can let the cats walking around in the building. Yoga classroom This is an important part, the place should be large and wide, convenient for students to attend classes. The reception desk is next to the classroom, which is convenient for students to inquire and register. This design has two classrooms to facilitate different types of yoga courses, and they have different styles. The veterinary clinic Considering that facilitating immediate first aid and transportation of medical equipment, it is located on the ground floor, includes an x-ray room, office, and operating room. The ward is on the first floor, giving the cat a quiet space to rest. W.C. and shower Similar to Idea 2.

Design Planning 4
Tree Thinking about the trees being a part of the design, like idea 3 is very basic and the concept of Precedent Study 04 may not be suitable because of the geographical environment. Therefore, found more research on the "treehouse", to see what is new.
The Common area Which faces the main entrance, is the first part that visitors step into. As a shared space for all visitors, this part must be interesting and have a distinctive corporate image. At the same time, because the number of visitors may be quite large, including cat visitors, yoga students, and other staff, it is better to increase the area of the common area to reduce the crowding of everyone in the same space. Yoga classroom This is an important part, the place should be large and wide, convenient for students to attend classes. In order to facilitate different courses, the classroom uses a movable wall to separate the space, and the classroom area can be large or small. The veterinary clinic Includes x-ray room, office, ward and operating room. Considering that it is relatively private and professional, in order to have a relatively quiet and able to control the flow of people, it is arranged on the first floor. W.C. and shower The previous designs mentioned that the number of shower rooms and toilets was insufficient because there were two classes of students taking yoga classes at the same time. Therefore, this idea increases the number of bathrooms and toilets, which is convenient for students to use and reduces waiting time. Skylight Because the location of the building is less sunlight and windows, it is planned to add some skylights to introduce sunlight.
Built around the tree
Tubular glass house by Aibek Almassov But there have a problem, that is the care of the tree, including the daylight needed by the tree and space for the tree to grow. The tree should have a suitable environment and sustainable growth in the building. It is meaningless if the tree cannot grow well.
This is a cylindrical structure made of glass, which allows a 360-degree view of the forest environment and combines the functions of modern industrial design with the beauty of nature. The smooth walls and ceiling will reveal four narrow circular floors and spiral white stairs wrapped around tree trunks.

This planning is very similar to the last one
Yoga classroom Considering that yoga classrooms may have different atmospheres and different functions, there are two different classrooms designed here. One is sunnier and has an exterior window; the other is darker and more private.
Cat x Human For having more communication between humans and cats, some sharing furniture can be added to the design.
From precedent studies 02 and 05, many details are designed for people and cats to share the same space. In order to blur the boundary between people and cats, sharing a space or even sharing furniture can be a good idea.
35

37 Extension Part Yoga classroom 1 & 2

Design Planning 6
Double-height space From precedent Study 02, there have some stairs and frames are used for the cat’s path. Also, there has a double-height space, the increases in building height can make the area feel higher and reduce the sense of oppression, which is particularly effective for small buildings. The Common area This affects the first impression of visitors to the building, so the double-height space is designed here, hoping that the sense of space can be enlarged and have better developed.
39
Common Area X Cat’s living area
This is Laugier’s Primitive Hut named an “indoor treehouse”. This shows a double-height space composed by beams and a square box. There is a hole under the box for people to pass through, and there is also an external ladder to climb up to the first floor.
Different shapes of holes and ladders determine which is the main user, such as small holes that only cats can pass through, or the regular ladder that allows human can use.
Platform
Cat hole
In order to blur the boundary between people and cats, sharing furniture or create an item of furniture which have some cat feathers can be a good idea. Cat’s claws are a very attractive part, many cat owners like to play with them, and it is very cute. Therefore, this can be used as a signboard in the common area to respond to the main idea of the building.

It is a classic small roof structure where children can overlook the ground and feel the tree trunks. Design Planning 8
In the previous planning 7, the flow of people can be improved, because the route from the yoga reception to the classroom is not reasonable. At the same time, reviewing the previous planning 3, the design of the shed can be used again in the expanded new roof. Light and shadows falling through the wooden beam will be interesting and special, and the shadows of leaves will appear in indoors.

Final Design Planning
51 Combining the advantages and characteristics of different planning, the final design was born. Basically, it refers to the design of planning 8 and adds a unique expanded roof.
52 Extension Building It is rare to see what under the cat. Generally, human beings look at the cat from the angle of horizontal or bird’s-eye view. Therefore, trying to find some strange or special angles to look at the cat, such as observing the cat from below, so that people can see the paws and limbs which hidden under the body. Part of the ceiling is changed to glass for seeing the movement of the cat, so there is such a design in the expanded common area. At the same time, considering that the windows of the original building are relatively small and the sunlight is often blocked by the trees in the park, hope to bring in more sunlight in the design. Therefore, the first floor of the extension is mainly composed of wooden beams and glass, so that more sunlight can enter the ground and the cat can have a place to enjoy the sun. The tree is an important role in this building. Not only is there a tree in the extension, but the site is also located in the park. Considering that the tree in the site will grow up in the future and need more space, the structure of the first floor is ramped to allow the tree to grow on top.
Flat? Half-height? In order to show the original appearance of the building and see the cat on the ceiling at the same time, has considered designing a loft in the common area. It is easy for cats to enter and hide in such a space, but considering that design will make it difficult for humans to enter if the cat has some accident or illness, it will be difficult to catch the cat to the veterinarian, so this idea was rejected.
53
