In Zambia, Government already recognized the need for a smart Zambia through the use of technology and various sections of our businesses are already implementing this technology. The e-visa system can now be applied for and provided online. No stamp is needed in the passport or a physical presence required. This development has enhanced easy access to our visa information for travelers wishing to visit Zambia. available.

The Zambian government has already recognized the need for a smart Zambia through the use of technology and various sections of our businesses

Let me also mention that Zambia participated at ITB Berlin, where the country was Convention and Culture Partners. ITB as one of the world’s most prestigious and leading travel trade show provided an enriching experience - encounters with people from all over the world, and valuable first-hand knowledge through personal interactions with international professionals.

That is the vision we have for ZATEX, to grow it steadily and make it an internationally recognized trade expo. As you are aware, the Government of Zambia has prioritized tourism as one of the key sectors for achieving enhanced economic development and job creation for our people. This simply means the opportunities to invest in tourism infrastructure are vast. Let me also mention that the year 2017 was a transformative year for Zambia as we witnessed the hosting of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) conference on sustainable tourism in Lusaka, Zambia in November last year, whose theme was “The International Conference on Promoting Sustainable Tourism, A Tool for Inclusive Growth and Community Engagement in Africa”. This conference was a defining moment for Zambia because around the same time, South Luangwa National Park in Eastern Zambia was declared an international sustainable park for tourism development, the first one in the world. Zambia therefore, is set for tourism development and I would like to see continued growth of participating buyers and media, as well as exhibitors. Having said that, let me appeal to industry stakeholders to identify With digital and seize new opportunities to enhance the marketing the whole tourism sector and co-create solutions to meet world is your market the needs of the traveler. ZAMBIA AIRPORTS CORPORATION LIMITED DEVELOPING ZAMBIA’S AVIATION INDUSTRY

The new Kenneth Kaunda International Airport Terminal under construction

Z

ambia’s four international airports namely Kenneth Kaunda in Lusaka, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe in Ndola, Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula in Livingstone and Mfuwe are managed by Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL).

10

The Corporation has embarked on major infrastructure and developmental projects to upgrade these airports in a quest to enhance the passenger experience and better cargo facilitation. Gone are the days when the function of an airport was to merely facilitate arrivals and departures as many countries around the world have now turned their airports into tourism attraction centres. The hospitality provided on arrival at any major airport speaks volumes of its tourism industry and Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has designed a customer-oriented approach to each and every passenger that flies into and out of the country.

ZACL has so far invested over USD 1 billion on equipment and infrastructure development which include the procurement of a state of the art Radar system at a cost of USD 20 million. While all its airports will be undergoing upgrades with enhanced facilities, the country’s flagship airport will be Kenneth Kaunda International Airport located in the capital city of Lusaka. The scope of work includes the construction of a four million capacity per annum international terminal building with six aero bridges, construction of a thirty room capacity in-transit hotel, a cargo terminal, aircraft hangar as well as a seventy room non-transit passenger hotel. New taxiways, aprons, rescue and fire services station, landside and airside driveways as well as an Air Traffic Control Tower are being constructed. A new shopping centre and office complex are also set to be built. The current airport will be rehabilitated and transformed into a two million capacity domestic passenger terminal creating more room for the ever growing aviation industry in Zambia. This particular upgrade project is anticipated to be completed in 2019.

Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) has designed a customer-oriented approach to each and every passenger that flies into and out of the country

Significant strides have already been made by the Corporation with the completion of the new international terminal at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, the tourist capital and home of the mighty Victoria Falls; the world’s largest waterfall due to its water volume plus a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vapours from the Victoria Falls also known as Mosi-O-tunya or “the smoke that thunders”, can be seen from Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport as one is landing, making it a truly remarkable sight. Aside from having eight neighbouring countries, Zambia is also centrally located on the continent for easy access to other Southern African countries as well as East Africa, West Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the Americas. With all the exciting new developments happening, Zambia is surely destined to become a regional and continental hub. 2018 zatex

ZAMBIA: MEETINGS MEAN BUSINESS MULEMWA MOONGWA

O

n June 21st 2001, Zambia was the hottest destination for travellers from across the globe. I remember vividly images of the NASA Team that was stationed at Fringilla and now looking back it seems like a lifetime ago. In a time before social media generated hypes, one event kept us all looking to the sky and indeed for most manna fell. The total solar eclipse that occurred on that day caused a hike in accommodation and transport charges, taxi drivers had never had it that good, they charged literally anything! I am not privy to the statistics of how many visitors entered our country or how much revenue Fringilla generated from that cosmic event but I know now it was significant.

12

The uniqueness for me as an Events professional is it is the one event that I feel promoted both leisure and business travel and with zero effort from us as the destination of choice. People came from far and wide to view that 90 second spectacle and to this day is still a reminder to me about how fortunate we are as a destination that we have so much nature working in our favor, take a moment of reflection, you too will be amazed. The UNWTO (2013) & AFDB Meetings (2016) both increased the traffic to Zambia and through them we have learnt more about our capabilities and limitations as a destination. I have worked locally in Events since 2005 and can attest to the significant growth of the industry which survives purely on demand. The continued hosting of Meetings, Conferences, Exhibitions , Travel & Tours has been a source of income for myself and others for a while now and all things being equal this should continue for a longtime to come. However, as a keen promoter of the Business Tourism sector , I continue to observe the slow uptake in optimizing this sector that has tremendous growth potential, also a realistic portal for job & wealth creation for us all. So how is it that so many are missing these acres of diamonds that are seemingly within all our eyeshot? I am still looking for an answer because surely by now following the lessons from the AFDB Meetings alone, where , we as a host country had to rent significant equipment that was used at the event due to the limited facilities at our venue we could have began seeing some traction in the building of bigger convention centres.

There were evident gaps that locals could have filled but once the closing anthem was sang, we all seemingly moved on and didn’t utilize the lessons learnt to prepare for our next major hosting. As an entrepreneur, I was taught to live by the mantra ‘ what problems am I a solution to’ , those that win in this industry are those that silently provide solutions for problems clients didn’t even know they had. To all readers, heed this call as the gap of this gift is quickly closing and it will be more rewarding to enter now , Meetings Mean Business ! Annually, associations and professional bodies host their events and are continually seeking destinations to take these events. Inter – government, regional and international bodies host meetings and most of these are based on the chairing body or government. We do not consciously take stock of the actual numbers but it is important now more than ever given the current positioning of Tourism in national development. Without boring you with international meetings that may or may not come to Zambia, for a moment count how many local Lawyers (LAZ), Engineers (EIZ), Accountants (ZICA) and Marketers (ZIM) descend on Livingstone annually, sometimes at the very same time. This means at those times of the year, individuals leave they towns, fly, drive or use public transportation to visit Livingstone. The host venues record 80-100% occupancy, the surrounding hotels and lodges are also not left out. The public transport serves the delegates and so do the local tour operators. we are very The ripple effects of fortunate as a one meeting that has destination that up to 500 delegates felt even by the we have so are marketer at the local much nature COMESA market selling working in beddings in town. The our favor above has not taken into account the other event suppliers such as the printers that

will provide the event The Meetings, with the photography, Incentive Travel décor , audio and visual equipment, stationary, Conference and branded clothing or the Exhibitions (MICE) branding equipment. Industry globally You can take time is a multi-billion and audit an event and really see what it dollar industry would be like if we had multiple venues that could accommodate multitudes of local or international delegates at any given time, this is MICE! The Meetings, Incentive Travel Conference and Exhibitions (MICE) Industry globally is a multi-billion dollar industry that has evolved with great significance over the last decade stimulating economic growth and job creation. In its early inception, the events industry was primarily focused on logistics such as selecting venues, equipment, travel and lodging. The fundamentals remain unchanged and are still vital, however, the Industry has grown and the skills required in events professionals have broadened considerably. Based on the above, you will agree that the services provided by the meetings industry often go unnoticed, but the economic impact is undeniable. The Meetings Industry is an economic engine, creating numerous jobs and generating considerable revenue and supporting communities across the country. Join the Zambia Tourism Agency on 12 April in observing Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) during the 2018 Zambia Travel Expo . Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) is intended to shine a light on the real impact meetings and events have on businesses, economies and communities led by a coalition known as Meetings Mean Business . Meetings Mean Business is an industry wide coalition to showcase the value that business meetings, trade shows, incentive travel, exhibitions, conferences and conventions bring to people ,businesses and communities!!

Nsingo COMMUNITY MUSEUM

By NDUBI MVULA

S

ITUATED right at the centre of Feni Village of Chipata, home to the Paramount Chief Ngwenyama Nkhosi yama Nkhosi Mpezeni IV is the newly launched Nsingo Community Museum. And any visitor to the village cannot miss the site of this venue that thouses the most prestigious historical information that would enrich anyone with an interest in history of the Ngoni people and their culture. Acting Tour Guide at the new museum, Lloyd Banda who is also an artist and has contributed some of the rich material for every visitor’s appreciation is always at hand to walk you through the path of how this once-upon-a-time warring tribe travelled from South Africa and settled in Eastern part of Zambia.

22

Nsingo art gallery dipicting Nc’wala ceremony

Mr Banda, an articulate tour guide welcomes visitors with a broad smile and straight away commences the journey of the Ngoni people who came with and have maintained the Nc’wala traditional ceremony commemorated once a year in February at Mtenguleni the Ngoni headquarters. He starts the journey with the genealogical tree of the Ngoni which stems back to the 1500 AD when it was led by Nanaba going by the title of Jere who was followed by Loyanda, Mangangati, Hlatshwayo and in 1818 to 1845 the last to use the title Jere was Zwangendaba. After the Jere title, came that of Mpezeni I and the first in the line was Ntutu Jere who ruled from 1845 to 1900, then Chiloa Jere from 1900 to 1941 as Mpezeni II followed by Pontino Jere from 1941 to 1981 as Mpezeni III. The current Mpezeni IV is David Njengembaso Jere who has been on the throne since 1982. Under his reign is the Ngoni Royal Establishment which comprises Inkhosi yama Nkhosi Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV, Nkhosi (Senior Chief) Nzamane who resides at Mfumbeni village, Nkhosi Gogo Madzimawe of Mtenguleni village and Nkhosi Mishoro of Dingeni village. Othyers are Nkosi Maguya of Ngiyelo village, Nkhosi Sairi of Chimpinga village, Nkhosi Kapatamoyo of Thondweni village, Nkhosi Mshawa of Kutcheni village, Nkhosi

Chinyaku of Ndina village and Nkhosi Mnukwa of Chikenkhe village. Attending this years’ Nc’wala traditional ceremony, Zambia Tourism Agency Tourism Promotions Manager-in-charge of Trade Justin Mbanga described the annual event as rich and electric, to an extent that it creates and enriches everyone’s appetite in terms of knowledge be it young or old. Mr Mbanga says the ceremony also plays a vital role in the promotion of domestic tourism as can be witnessed the magnitude of Zambians that flock to the City of Chipata to not only have a glimpse of the ceremony but participate from Feni to Laweni the dormitory at Kampala village and ending up at Mtenguleni. “From what we are witnessing, I must state that domestic tourism is at its best and this can be seen not only here at the Nc’wala but at almost all the traditional ceremonies that we have in the country. Zambia is very rich with its culture and traditions which attract thousands of Zambians each time there is a traditional ceremony,” he says. As a seasoned expert in tourism promotion, Mr Mbanga strongly feels that the establishment of the Nsingo Community Museum adds yet another rich flavour to the ceremony as it provides further more detailed information for the visitors who after witnessing the event would love to carry with them memories.

Common mode of transport in Eastern Zambia

He adds that the memories could be in form of souvenirs such as videos depicting the entire stretch of the ceremony to other Ngoni mementos of their time at the Nc’wala or better still their visit to the Ngoni land. Mr Mbanga says the Nc’wala traditional ceremony has now moved to another level of appreciation owing to the establishment of the museum which is an added value and prays that all other traditional ceremonies establish open museums which can be visited even when the ceremony is not there. In supporting Mr Mbanga’s point of view, is Chipata Day Secondary School teacher Elizabeth Mzumara who equally feels that the opening of the museum enriches the traditional ceremony further. “This is fantastic. A museum of this nature adds more value to the ceremony which in the past began would end when the event was over until a year later. 2018 zatex

But with the museum in place, the dissemination of this rich culture will be appreciated throughout the year,” she says. Ms Mzumara also says the museum brings to the fold a source of information for the pupils and other researchers which is a hands-on. For pupils, Ms Mzumara says as a Teacher of Literature in English and Geography, she is planning to a trip to Feni village for the purpose of exposing the pupils the rich tourism news which also has a niche in history, geography and Literature. “In my Geography lessons, there is a lot on tourism and my pupils will definitely benefit. Such visits to historical places find a permanent place in a pupils mind and helps them to remember during exams and beyond,” an excited Ms Mzumara says. And former Chipata Central Member of Parliament Matthews Mwale could not hide his gratitude to note that the Ngoni Royal Establishment decided to put in place a museum which will not only enrich the knowledge base for the local people but will also benefit all visitors to Chipata who want to know more about the rich Ngoni culture.

knowledge is power and no individual should be starved of knowledge as it is the most precious commodity that every person should posses

Mr Mwale notes that knowledge is power and no individual should be starved of knowledge as it is the most precious commodity that every person should posses. As the welcome remarks to the ceremony are announced by the master of ceremonies: “Bayete...Ngwenyama Bayete...Ntulo Bayete...Ndabazithe Bayete...Inkhosi yama Nkhosi” Let it be not a habit but a desire for anyone visiting Chipata starting from this years’ Nc’wala to include the Nsingo Community Museum on the itinerary failure to which your tour of duty to the Ngoniland will be incomplete. SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK

FIRST SUSTAINABLE PARK IN THE WORLD

Zambia remains committed to the sustainable use of wildlife resources, which is a result of good conservation and good wildlife management South Luangwa is set in pristine and beautiful wild

S

outh Luangwa National Park is the first in the world to be declared an international sustainable wildlife park for tourism development. The park has earned this status due to its pristine beauty and habitation. Located in the eastern part of Zambia’s Luangwa river valley, South Luangwa is a worldrenowned park and amongst the most intense wildlife haven with the highest concentrations of game along the meandering Luangwa River and its lagoons. As you visit the park, the river is often crowed with hippos and crocodiles and provides a lifeline for one of the greatest diversities of habitat and wildlife supporting more than 60 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds.

26

South Luangwa is one of the best known national parks in Africa for walking safaris

The park is also one of the best known national parks in Africa for walking safaris, a unique activity that allows tourists close interaction with nature. With such an amazing prestige, South Luangwa National Park has transformed its name from an ordinary park to getting recognised as a sustainable wildlife park by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), a status bestowed on the park on the 16th of November, 2017 by the UNWTO Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rafai.

The declaration of South Luangwa as a park committed to sustainable tourism for development means that the sanctuary has proved it has the potential to meet the current tourism needs for the people and those of the future generations. The United Nations General Assembly affirmed when announcing the adoption of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (IY2017), a watershed moment for making tourism a catalyst for positive change, because tourism can contribute to all the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) states that “Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future.

South Luangwa is home to over 400 species of birds

South Luangwa is a world-renowned park and amongst the most intense wildlife haven with the highest concentrations of game

Therefore the declaration of South Luangwa National Park as an International Park for Sustainable Tourism for development means that the principles for sustainable tourism are evident in the way the park is being managed. Zambia remains committed to the sustainable use of wildlife resources, which is a result of good conservation and good wildlife management, and it is the collective interest to ensure that we use these resources sustainably. 2018 zatex
