As Minister responsible for tourism and arts, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our beautiful city of Lusaka for the second edition of the Zambia Travel Expo (ZATEX 2016). A special welcome to the international visitors comprising exhibitors, Hosted buyers, and Media drawn from over twenty countries around the world. As you have already observed, ZATEX 2016 is a big improvement from the inaugural edition in 2015, both in terms of the total number of exhibitors as well as the number of countries represented. Last year, for example, hosted buyers were drawn from only five countries but this number has increased to over twenty five this year. The number of exhibitors has also increased from 40 in 2015 to over 80 this year (including 7 international exhibitors). The range and diversity of local participation is also commendable as it provides a healthy mix of private and public sector industry players …all working for one goal: putting Zambia in the ‘cockpit’ of tourism marketing and ensuring we get the arrivals that our country and the region so crucially desire.

2:54 AM

The theme: ‘One Million visitors, One Million opportunities’ could not have come at a better time than now when so many positive developments are taking place in the Zambian tourism industry. Top on the list is without doubt the lifting, by the European Commission, of a 7- year ban that was imposed on Zambian registered aircraft. The new development means that all airlines registered in Zambia have now met EU safety standards and are therefore eligible to fly to any country in the European Union. We commend the Civil Aviation Authority, Zambia Airports Corporation Ltd, Government and all those who played a role in making this happen. As a ministry, our expectation now is that a number of established local, regional and international airlines will take advantage of this positive development and introduce new flights between Zambia and the European countries as the EU announcement is an endorsement that Zambia is committed to offering EU citizens and all visitors for that matter, the highest safety standards in our skies. We also expect that you, the ZATEX delegates will spread the word and assure your colleagues back home that Zambian skies have been declared safe. The other positive developments include airport and road infrastructure development. Those who landed at our KK International Airport may have already seen the construction works for an ultra-modern international terminal scheduled to be completed by 2019. Others are the newly constructed and fully operational Harry Mwaanga International airport in Livingstone, a modern airport to be constructed in Ndola, as well as the refurbishment of Mfuwe Airport in South Luangwa National Park, the completed Mansa Airport in Luapula Province and Mbala Airport in Northern Province. This is in addition to our aggressive countrywide road infrastructure programmes: the Link Zambia 8,000 linking all provinces and districts and the Pave Zambia 2,000 for township roads (using concrete paving blocks and coble stone).

Evidently, our country has become more accessible by road while our cities can now boast of smoother and modernized urban and township roads. All these, coupled with our unique tourist attractions as well as the friendly and hospitable nature of the Zambian people, make our country an ideal tourist destination all year round. As the people of Zambia go to the polls on 11th August, 2016, we would like to allay any fears that you might have concerning the safety of visitors to our country. I remain confident that, whatever our political differences might be, the people of Zambia have learnt to cherish peace above all else. Since independence in 1964, our democracy has continued to thrive under different presidents as well as political parties and our elections have always been peaceful. Under our cherished motto of ‘One Zambia – One Nation’ and ‘Unity in diversity’, 2016 will not be any different. For us, ‘It’s business as usual’ So, sit back and enjoy your stay in wonderful Zambia. After ZATEX has ended, we encourage you to explore our country to meet with the people, appreciate our rich culture, marvel at our diverse wildlife in 20 unspoiled national parks or indeed get on an adventure trail in Livingstone, our tourism capital. But whatever you decide, don’t forget to see one of the greatest natural wonders of the world –the Mighty Victoria Falls. I wish you all wonderful deliberations at ZATEX 2016 and hope to see you back..again and again! Zambia – Let’s Explore!

STATEMENT BY ZTA CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MR. FELIX S. CHAILA

On behalf of the Board, Management and staff of the Zambia Tourism Agency and indeed on behalf of all our stake holders and collaborating partners, I warmly welcome you all-- to our great city of Lusaka and to Mulungushi International Conference Centre for the 2016 version of the ZATEX 2016.

If you are visiting Zambia for the first time, I assure you of our warmest and most cordial interactions with our Zambian people and an experience of a life time in one of Africa’s best kept secrets. The popularity and growing significance of Zambia as a tourist destination is underscored and endorsed by the increasing number of important international awards and accolades that the destination has been receiving including: • pronounced as one of the fastest growing destinations in Africa – Taleb Rifai (UNWTO Secretary General) • voted as the ‘Second Best Destination’ for the French to visit in 2016 – Liloga.com • voted as the ‘Most peaceful country in Africa’ – Global Peace Index 2015 • voted as having one of the ‘Top 10 Best natural swimming pools in the World’ (Devil’s Pool in Livingstone) – Trip Advisor • voted as one of the top destinations in the world for Billionaires to visit FORBES Magazine 2015 It is gratifying to note that within two years, ZATEX has more than doubled in size and promises more qualitative outcomes to all participants The number of both exhibitors and buyers has increased by more than 100 percent in this, only the second edition of ZATEX. The tourism product range on display is representative of all the tourism destinations as well as all the tourism product categories of Zambia. Clearly, the interest from both tourism product owners and tourism buyers to participate at ZATEX 2016 has been huge and encouraging. The spirit of partnership between ZTA

6

and the tourism private sector partners (including domestic and international airlines, hotel and accommodation establishments, tour operators and Tourism Boards from other countries) in the successful hosting of the ZATEX 2016, has been phenomenal. Let me not forget to acknowledge the support and facilitations received from the National Heritage Conservation Commission, the Zambia Revenue Authority, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, the Department of Immigration as well as the Ministry of Finance for their timely and consistent allocation of resources to our organisation. Above all, I wish to acknowledge the good guidance and support from our principles and parent Ministry – the Ministry of Tourism and Arts for the continuous positive guidance and facilitation. Since we hosted the inaugural ZATEX last year (May 2015), a lot of positive developments, with the potential to positively change the tourism landscape of our country, have taken place, a few of which I wish to acknowledge: a) Restructuring of Zambia Tourism Board As some of you may have noticed, the name of our organisation has been changed from the ‘Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB)’ to the ‘Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA)’. Details of this transformation has been outlined in the new Tourism and Hospitality Act No.13 of 2015. Apart from undertaking tourism marketing functions, the new institution has also been charged with the functions of tourism enterprise licencing and regulation of standards.

The fact that both quality assurance and tourism marketing are now housed in the same institution is an opportunity which the ZTA intends to take full advantage of. b) Launch of Electronic Visa Processing Facility In October last year, the department of immigration launched the e-Visa processing system. This has substantially eased visa processing for all intending travellers to Zambia and removed one of the most significant obstacles faced by would-be visitors to our country. Additionally, tourists from destinations on the Zambia’s deferred visa list can now get the visas approved in as short a period as 3 days. c) Lifting of the E.U. Ban on Zambian Registered Aircraft. Within the month of June, 2016, Zambia received the great news of having been taken off the European Union (E.U.) list of countries whose registered airlines are banned from flying to E.U. destinations. This development comes after Zambia, through the Ministry of Transport and Communications, met all the safety and regulatory requirements for lifting the ban. It will also stimulate the speedy growth of the Zambian Aviation industry to service the growing tourist arrivals. There is no better time than now for intending investors to set up business in the Zambian Aviation industry. With the Ebola epidemic now under control in West Africa and Zambia having been declared yellow fever free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in late 2014, I do expect that all the buyers and sellers at the 2016 ZATEX will transact brisk and profitable business with little or nothing to worry

2:54 AM

about. After you are done with the business, I invite our international visitors to EXPLORE our beautiful country, meet our warm hearted and friendly people and sample our famous Zambian cuisine, music and dance. Zambia- Let’s Explore!

Zambia elected to the UNWTO Executive Council! After 35 years of trying, Zambia has finally made it into the powerful UNWTO Executive Council. Zambia was elected into the Executive Council at the 21st Session of the UNWTO General Assembly held in the city of Medellin-Colombia in September 2015, following months of intense lobbying by Government through the Ministry of Tourism and Arts. At the same event, Tourism and Arts Minister Jean Kapata and her Zimbabwean counterpart Engineer Walter Mzembi handed over the

Presidency of the General Assembly (having been co-Presidents by virtue of having hosted the 20th edition in August, 2013 at Victoria Falls). Hon. Kapata thanked the UNWTO for the support Zambia has been receiving since hosting the General Assembly adding that the event had increased Zambia’s visibility in the international market. A place on the Executive Council enables Zambia to add her voice on the various matters brought forward by subsidiary organs such as programs and budgets, tourism and sustainability, tourism and competitiveness, statistics and the tourism satellite account as

well as the review of applications for affiliate membership. As CNN’s Richard Quest put it ‘every member country must strive to be ‘in the cockpit’ of tourism decision making! Zambia now is! Zambia Tourism Board wish to congratulate the Minister of Tourism and Arts Hon. Jean Kapata (who was Delegation Leader) and the entire ‘Team Zambia’ for this wonderful achievement!

FREE AT LAST! By Caristo Chitamfya and Percy Ngwira

Yes , Freee at last! The big news came on 16 June, 2016... as the European Commission formally announced that all airlines certified in Zambia are with immediate effect free to fly in European Union air space.

C

M

Y

CM

MY

CY

This followed an update on the list of airlines that do not meet international safety standards and were therefore subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union. For seven years, Zambia was on the list and one can understand why the news has been received with such a great sigh of relief by various stake holders across the country:

CMY

K

‘’ Its great news, We’ve always had to deal with international clients who would refuse to book on our local airlines because of the ban. Everybody is happy as Zambia is now up there with other big international airlines with a good safety rating’ says Molly Care of Zambia’s leading Tour Operator- VOYAGERS. The Zambia Tourism Agency has welcomed the news as an important development for Zambia’s Aviation and Tourism Industries: ‘’ We are happy that this good news comes after other important developments for the Zambian tourism industry such as the introduction of the e visa application platform which has already boosted arrivals to the , the introduction of the Univisa for Zambia and Zimbabwe and the reclassification of Zambia as a non-Yellow Fever prevalent country by the WHO in 2014. All these coupled by ambitious developments at home in roads and Airport infrastructure will have a fundamental impact on the growth in arrivals to the destination’’. Says Mr. Felix Chaila, the Chief Executive Officer

14

of the Zambia Tourism Agency in a statement. The Government of the Republic of Zambia has commended the Civil Aviation Authority, the Zambia Airports Corporation and all those who played a role in achieving this milestone. Tourism and Arts Minister Honourable Jean Kapata MP says the development is an endorsement that Zambia is commitment to offering EU citizens and all visitors for that matter, the highest safety standards in our skies: ‘’Our expectation now is that a number of established local, regional and international airlines will take advantage of this positive development and introduce new flights between Zambia and the European Union. I also urge all ZATEX delegates to spread the word and assure your colleagues back home that Zambian skies have been declared safe ’’ implored the Minister in a statement. The EU Air Safety List seeks to ensure the highest level of air safety for European citizens, which is a top priority of the Aviation Strategy adopted in December 2015. The EU Air Safety List is one of the Union's main instruments to meet that objective. Following this latest update, all airlines certified in Zambia are cleared from the list, along with Air Madagascar and three airlines certified in Indonesia (Citilink, Lion Air and Batik Air). In addition most aircraft of Iran Air are allowed to resume operations to the EU. EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc said: "Aviation safety is my top priority and today's update illustrates our continuous efforts to offer the highest level of air safety to European citizens. I am happy to say that after

seven years of work and extensive European technical assistance, we were able to clear all Zambian air carriers from the list. Following my visit to Iran in April, a technical assessment was successfully carried out in May. Based on this I am happy to announce that we are now also able to allow most aircraft from Iran Air back into European skies." The EU Air Safety List not only helps to maintain high levels of safety in the EU, but it also helps affected countries to improve their levels of safety, in order for them to eventually be taken off the list. It has also become a major preventive tool, as it motivates countries with safety problems to act upon them before a ban under the Air Safety List would become necessary. While Zambia celebrates following the news, others are not so lucky. A total of 216 airlines did not make the safety list and are banned from EU skies: 214 airlines certified in 19 states due to a lack of safety oversight by the aviation authorities from these states, two individual airlines, based on safety concerns: Iraqi Airways (Iraq) and Blue Wing Airlines (Suriname) while an additional six airlines are subject to operational restrictions and can only fly to the EU with specific aircraft types. These are Afrijet and Nouvelle Air Affaires SN2AG (Gabon), Air Koryo (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), Air Service Comores (the Comoros), Iran Air (Iran) and TAAG Angola Airlines (Angola). The update of the Air Safety List is based on the unanimous opinion of the safety experts from the Member States who met from 31 May to 2 June within the EU Air Safety Committee (ASC). This Committee is chaired by the European Commission with the support of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and assessment is made against international safety standards, and notably the standards promulgated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The winning ways continue!

Zambia has continued to shine at international tourism events with the latest being at Africa’s biggest tourism stage – the INDABA held in the South African city of Durban from 7-9 May, 2016.

Zambia Tourism Agency Chief Executive Officer Mr. Felix Chaila was elated to receive the award, describing it as a victory for the Zambian tourism industry: “We at the Zambia Tourism Agency, regard this achievement as a victory, not only for the 21 private sector participants who represented Zambia at the Fair, but for the entire Zambian tourism industry. INDABA is the largest tourism marketing event in Africa and one of the top three ‘must visit’ on the global calendar. Being recognised at such a high profile and extremely competitive stage speaks volumes about the quality of our tourism product’’ Mr. Chaila said in a post event statement. The Zambia Tourism Agency has also been using the INDABA Fair and Kwazulu Natal in general) as bench marking platforms for Zambian Civic Authority leaders. ZTA organised meetings as well as tours (of KwaZulu-Natal) aimed at giving the Zambian delegation an appreciation of the tourism product offering in the province and the cross-cutting issues affecting tourism development. Ultimately, the move is part of ZTA’s overall strategy is to involve all stake holders in tourism promotion. Bench-mark

ing is a major part of the process as it enables Civic leaders to learn from the best practices. This year, ZTA invited three Secretaries to Kwazulu Natal namely: Mr. Sturdy Mwale (Lusaka Province), Mr. Chanda Kasolo (Eastern Province) and Boniface Chimbwali (Luapula Province). Other participants included: city planners, a town clerk, an economist from the Ministry of Finance as well representatives from Zambia’s Department of National Parks and wildlife. Apart from stand exhibitions and business meetings, Zambia also held a media event on the side lines of INDABA to brief industry players and Media about the latest tourism developments in Zambia. The event was jointly sponsored by the Zambia Tourism Agency, Proflight Zambia and Zambian Breweries. The Zambian ‘Winning Team’ included: Lions Camp, Wild life Camp, Bush Tracks, Crock Valley, Southern Sun Hotel, Winning travel and Tours, Flat Dogs Camp, Islands of Siankaba, Voyagers Zambia, Proflight Zambia, Kafunta River Lodge, Badge under Izzy, Best Western Plus Lusaka Grand Hotel, Leopards Lodge, Max Mas Travel and Tours, Luciano Travel, Mambo Tours, Tourism Council of Zambia, Taj Pamodzi Hotel, Track and Trail, Mukambi Safaris. PEACE Zambia’s unique selling point By Carol White

C

CM

MY

When I came to Zambia from Zimbabwe nearly ten years ago it was for a three year contract and I was one of those stalwarts that never thought I would leave Zimbabwe. Zambia was embracing and I felt a freedom of mind and spirit that I had never encountered in my life so it was a mesmerising pull to make this home. So I feel very passionate about the things that Zambia has to

CY

CMY

K

Peace is Zambia’s unique selling point. We should all be climbing on top of our houses, hills and mountains and shouting about it. Zambia is unique and peaceful yet not enough noise is made about it. The noise needs to come from everyone living in Zambia. The world today is upside down and whenever one turns on the television or radio there is another calamity or sinister drama. The Xenophobia in South Africa is a stark reminder of what is happening on our front step. There was emotional talk about boycotting South African businesses and my take is let us be the example that Zambia has always been. The people that

be clearly understood. Semantics, the words that we speak, have a

will be loss of jobs and we are now used to the brands and enjoying them.

and business.

18

We are all Ambassadors of Zambia, those that are living here and those that have lived here as well as Zambians in the diaspora. It is important that we have a balanced view point when discussing with prospective investors and those now wondering where to put their money. It is important to have the facts correct and not exaggerate. None of us are happy about the exchange rate but it must be looked at in the macro economic sense. Zambia does not live in isolation. So where we need to

granted because they haven’t lived anywhere else or had other experiences. I am born and bred in Africa and there isn’t another place to retire to one day. Hard times in Zambia are easier than in many other places. We have sunshine just about all year round. The Zambian people are warm hearted and love life. They enjoy themselves and there is everything good about that. The only place to have a cuppachino ten years ago was Intercontinental Hotel and Ocean Basket and then much excitement when Kilimanjaro opened at Manda Hill. Since then the shopping malls have expanded at a galloping rate and not just in Lusaka. First published in the Post Newspaper

There is a maturity in the retail shops and customer service has improved with the franchised and local brands. At last there is a pool of retail workers who have gained experience and can notch that on their belt and CV! The new East Park Mall which is close to where I live has an interesting mix of new brands and shops.

Customers still have to go and discover these shops for themselves. I really wonder why there isn’t advertising and information in the main stream media. Word of mouth isn’t enough anymore nor is the on line media and if shops have spent all that money setting up they should spare some for letting potential customers know about them. Rootz an interior décor shop with an eclectic style of contemporary Africa is a feast for the home and business decorator. They also have a Tea Room serving an array of herbal teas that are infused in a special glass tea pot. The concoction cleared my sinuses I must add. Luxury Homes has set a new standard in Zambia with Italian and South African furniture that is a touch of opulent class.

2:54 AM

Baby R Us and Toys R Us are a welcome addition and has a one stop selection for the new baby. The new book shop has well priced books and still settling in. Food Lovers, PicknPay and the fast food outlets are all there. Fishaways is a new addition to this side of town and produces fresh, quality, oil free food. The Korean owned shop, Kobi Foods, has delightful service and well priced food. Mezza of course has their niche, and one of my favourites. Pizza Hut is making waves and selling Pizza’s like hot cakes. So funny how people love something new. I do prefer theDebonairs thin base and no oil pizzas. So there is something for everyone. Do you know about all the shops at East Park Mall? I didn’t walk into every shop and so this is a quick impression. You will have to go and discover for yourself as the retail shops are the best kept secret !!!! I did buy a fabulous African tie and die outfit and headscarf at Yvettes.ast Park Mall please do have a newspaper flyer so that we all know about the retail outlets there. There is choice now in Lusaka so what is special and how will noticed with East Park Mall compared to when Manda Hill re opened is that many of the shop owners are conscious about service and providing the customer a reason to shop there.

Mint Lounge or Mugg and Bean. I was delighted to meet a Zambian mother and daughter, both lawyers, who have built a luxury lodge in Mongu, Ikithe Luxury Resort and Spar. Stylish and well thought out this lodge is a game changer. The lodge is built around, ‘Steven’s Tree,’ a majestic Rosewood tree on the white sandy shore of LakeMapaela. Mrs Mutti hails from Mongu and said that it was time to go back and invest in her village and contribute to the community. Imagine a Zambia where everyone that can does exactly that, builds and creates a legacy of quality and international standard so that tourists, researchers and locals can go to knowing that they will have a superior experience. I did add that in this day and age wifi is a must!!! Marketing and business is about creating the demand. I predict a new wave of Zambian owned businesses that compete with franchises and are at a world class level yet have a Zambian flavour. This country has more than enough for everyone and you don’t have to be rich you just have to have the inner desire to learn and grow and make something home grown. Destination Copperbelt; more than meets the eye... By GETHSEMANE MWIZABI

The rich history of Copper mining activities in the region are in themselves what can be called mining tourism. European prospectors were shocked at the extent of tribal diggings found on the Copperbelt and the Katanga pedicle. Even before the Lunda and Mwata Kazembe Empires of last century, copper was in circulation in the form of ingots or crosses. Used as currency in central African trade it was somewhat eclipsed in value with the increase in slave trade. In keeping with the attitudes of the time, many prospectors refused to believe that the local tribes people were in fact responsible for the digging destination for a unique tourism experience. It is endowed with rich natural, cultural heritage dating from pre-colonial rule to date. from Kapiri Mposhi to Ndola. Conferencing facilities are available. There is also a snake and Reptile Park, and educational information on trees and many other aspects of our flora and fauna. Children who before would never have had the opportunity to interact and appreciate nature will have a chance to do so. The Dag Hammerskjold Memorial The Dag Hammerskjold Memorial ten kilometres along the Ndola/Kitwe road commemorates the sight where the United Nations Secretary General died in a plane crash during the Katanga crisis in Zaire in 1961. In 1970, the government of the Republic of Zambia declared the crash site a historic landmark and national monument. In August 1999, the United Nations Country team conceptualized the Dag Hammarskjold Living Memorial Initiative and in November, 1999 the site was designated as a Global Peace Park by the International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT), making it the first in Africa and the eleventh in the world to be accorded this status. It is located 13km west of the City of Ndola

Lake Kashiba The lake is 100 meter deep Lake Kashiba, Further south on the Kapiri Mposhi road. Both lakes have local cultural significance and are formed by the collapse of surface rock into the underlying limestone. Lake swimming and good birdwatching. Levy Mwanawasa Stadium The architecture beauty of the Levy Mwanawasa stadium is breath taking. Because Zambia is a football loving nation, many games are always been played at the magnificent stadium named in memory of Zambia’s third president. Lake Chilengwa, Some sixteen kilometres southeast of Ndola is one of two sunken lakes - Lake Chilengwa It was formed by the collapse of rock into an underlying limestone cavern and has local cultural significance. A key characteristic of this lake is its ability to change its water color. Early in the morning the water is green with mist above it and during the evening it becomes clear. Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Orphanage is sheltering some 132 chimpanzees. It is one of the oldest and largest chimpanzee reserves in the world and is internationally recognised as such. But that wasn’t always the case; the founders David and Sheila Siddle used to be smiled at for their unorthodox methods to adopt and nurse orphaned and injured chimpanzees. At the Project Area, nearly 100 chimpanzees live in four separate communities in enclosures measuring between 19 and 77 hectares each. Chimpanzees from all over the world are rescued from poachers and amusement parks and brought to the Orphanage at Chimfunshi. The Chimfunshi property encompasses more than 4200 hectares. In addition to providing the chimpanzees with forested enclosures, part of this land is clinic and the Education Centre. The Education Centre is an important research centre for international primatologists and students, and, as the name implies, provides chimpanzee education to visiting school groups and tourists located 60 kilometers away from Chingola on the Solwezi road Polish World War II Memorial Site The mass killings of the Second World War, 1939-1945 triggered the exodus of many Polish people that included mainly Jews. Zambia under British control then became a host to many of these refugees. Three camps were set up. One was in Mbala (Abercorn that time) the other was in Livingstone and the other in Ndola. The place in Bwana Mkubwa, Ndola was host to a Polish refugee camp for 18,000 people and was their home for almost five years and was closed in 1948 long after the war had ended in Europe. A monument to mark their presence still lies at the campsite. Kansenji War Graves This cemetery contains 23 War Dead concentrated from Abercorn European Cemetery and 2 concentrated from Livingstone Cemetery. It also contains a special memorial to 1

casualty known to be buried in Chikuula Military Grave and special memorials to 2 casualties formerly commemorated on the Ikawa (or Old Fife) Memorial, whose graves are not known. They are also burials of the 1939-1945 war and 1 Belgian burial. The Chichele Mofu Tree It is located along Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriage Way and is over 200 years. It was declared a National Monument on 21st March, 1976 to commemorate Zambia’s participation in the World Forestry Day. Sadly, on the 1st March, 2008, the Chichele Mofu Tree fell due to strong winds. Slave Tree In downtown Ndola, there is a national monument called the Slave Tree. The Slave Tree was a large pod mahogany or mupapa tree (Afzelia quanzensis) that was a meeting place for slave traders coming and going from central Africa. Swahili slave traders erected a stockade here under the tree, and the tree provided a shaded meeting area within the stockade. Councils of war were held under the tree and groups of captives from the surrounding population were occasionally sold there during the mid-1800s. The Slave Tree is represented on Ndola’s coat of arms. Ultimately, Copperbelt has plenty to offer in terms of tourism. Recreational facilities like Masala Cultural Village and The Boating and Sailing Club in Ndola provide great entertainment for tourists.

LIVINGSTONE INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AND ARTS FESTIVAL

March

ZAMBIA’S CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA TAKES ROOT! By Caristo Chitamfya

It’s now been ‘three in a row’, LICAF is unstoppable! Catch the hypnotizing power of African music and dance, in a unique destination! LICAF 2016 has been hailed as successful not only in terms its entertainment and cultural value but also in its contribution to the economy of Livingstone.

C

M

Y

CM

MY

CY

CMY

When the Zambia Tourism Board took over the running of the festival in 2014, few would have believed that, in just three years, LICAF would become Zambia’s premiere festival for culture and the arts. But as they say ‘seeing is believing’. Those who attended the 2016 edition (held from 25-27 March, 2016), will agree that the LICAF bar has been raised to another level. The Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) believes that LICAF is today among the fastest growing festivals in Africa, adding the hypnotizing power of music and dance to the already irresistible charm of Livingstone.

K

When you have 10 regions of Zambia (representing 73 tribes) and add international participants to the equation,- all encapsulated in one festival and happening at a time when the Victoria Falls is at its usual best, you are guaranteed an experience of a life time. That’s exactly what those who attended the 2016 festival experienced. LICAF started as a side event of the 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly (which Zambia and Zimbabwe co-hosted in August 2013). But thanks to the Zambia Tourism Board, LICAF is now an annual event that showcases the best of Zambia’s rich cultural heritage. It is also a platform for cultural exchange as regional and international groups join in the fun! Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) Managing Director Felix Chaila, is always upbeat about LICAF and has no doubts about its positive impact on Zambia’s tourism marketing efforts: ‘‘LICAF has become a flag ship festival for ZTB

and for Zambia. We are always working towards doubling our collaborative efforts to ensure that LICAF is better organized and that it attracts the highest number of local and international participants, year in year out. Visitors to LICAF are guaranteed a weekend of great fun and excitement. Just imagine, under the normal Zambian traditional calendar, it will take you a year to see all of Zambia’s traditional ceremonies as they are held at different times in different regions but in only 2 days you can see them all in one place…if you come to LICAF in Livingstone-Zambia.!’’ said Mr. Chaila in a statement. This year, LICAF did what has never happened before…and that is…take the street carnival to the people as the colorful procession of both local and international floats meandered majestically through the townships of Livingstone, bringing the tourism capital to a standstill as Livingstonians watched in total admiration! Even tourists rushing to catch their flights, could not help but stop for a moment to capture some pictures as the procession turned onto airport Road. Other highlights at LICAF 2016 included: a cultural extravaganza at Maramba Cultural village, traditional dance clinics (specially recommended for all non-African visitors), pop music festival-featuring some of Zambia’s greatest names in music, gala dinner, fashion show, crafts display and a sun set cruise on the Zambezi as well as a tree –planting ceremony (at the Livingstone General Hospital premises) hosted by Tourism Minister Hon. Jean Kapata and attended by diplomats and officials from participating countries. Not to be forgotten was a special guest performance (at the Gala dinner) by Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi, regarded as one of Africa’s finest musicians. As usual ‘Tuku’ as he is popularly known was a marvel to watch as he churned out popular tunes from yester years as well as his more recent composi-

tions, sending dinner guests (that included Tourism Minister Hon. Jean Kapata) into a frantic dance session. The Gala Dinner was held at the Avani –Victoria Falls (formerly Zambezi Sun) Thank you ‘Tuku’…we hope to see you again next year! NORTHERN PROVINCE, the unspoiled Africa! Before the new tourism Tag line ‘Let’s Explore’ was created, Zambia was known as ‘the real Africa’ a slogan that was sadly misunderstood by most of our colleagues in the Western world (and hence the reason it was dropped). But in ‘Zambia-the Real Africa’ we wanted the world to know thateven though there are many more places on this continent that can pass the description , Zambia has regions so real, so unspoiled, natural and so remote that one would think no human being has ever been there! Foremost among these regions is surely the Northern Province. Driving through Zambia, you simply know when you are in Northern Province – nowhere is the landscape as lush and as inviting to the eye as here. It is a province of diversity. From the wide Bangweulu swamps of the west to the winding rivers of the Luangwa Valley in the east, from the craggy slopes of the Great Rift Valley in the north to the bubbling Hot Springs further south, you will see beauty. It is the beauty of an untouched nature, the

By Daniel Vedder

beauty of unmarred creation, an African beauty. Probably the single most defining characteristic of this place is its water. Water in every form: thundering waterfalls and meandering rivers; marshes, hot springs and dambos. 51 waterfalls lure you in this province alone; admire the magnificent Kalambo Falls plummeting 214 meters into the depths; stand in awe at the gushing torrents flowing over the Chishimba and Lumangwe falls. Where there is water, there is life: antelopes, monkeys, crocodiles, many-coloured birds and fish. Enjoy walking safaris in the Luangwa valley, go snorkeling on Lake Tanganyika, or simply keep your eyes open and see what you will discover. Get to know the people and their history. Meet the Bembas, the Lambas and other tribes. See traces of the San, the first inhabitants of this land, where they immortalised themselves in rock paintings depicting their lives many centuries ago. See more recent history: the oldest stone church in Zambia; the place where the German General Von Lettow-Vorbeck

surrendered at the end of the Great War; the colonial manor house of Shiwa-Ng'andu. Experience the forces of nature as you witness a tropical thunderstorm in the rainy season. Be amazed at a night sky untainted by any form of pollution, a starry host ruled by that most legendary constellation, the Southern Cross. Hear, smell and see the vitality of the land around you; life expressing itself in the croaking of frogs and the chirping of crickets, the smell of the “lady of the night” or the sight of the flat-topped acacia tree. This is Africa at its best. And when you have stood on a mountain and gazed across miles and miles of grassy plains, when you have felt the spray of our waterfalls and heard the waves lapping on our beaches, you will agree. Welcome to Zambia; welcome to the Northern Province, the unspoiled Zambia you just have to explore. Zambia – Let’s Explore!.

THE LOWER ZAMBEZI a "must-do" safari experience. Chiawa Camp & Old Mondoro, Lower Zambezi NP.

Situated on the banks of the Zambezi River in the south-eastern part of Zambia, opposite Zimbabwe's Mana Pools National Park, the Lower Zambezi National Park occupies 4092 sq. kms, with 120 kms of river frontage. Its distinguishing features are the rugged escarpment to the north, the river itself, and its numerous islands, lagoons and floodplains, which attract most of the wildlife. There are approximately 50 mammal species and 400 bird species, which thrive in the Park, as well as a wide variety of spectacular trees, grasses and flowers. The legendary Zambezi River is in itself a spectacle and is the namesake of this pristine wilderness. Along its 2700 km course, the Zambezi fertilizes the Barotse floodplains, plunges over the Victoria Falls and replenishes the massive Lake Kariba before reaching the Lower Zambezi. Here, a myriad of islands have formed, creating a home and feeding ground for an incredible amount of diverse wildlife. And which together creates one of the most diverse and interesting eco-systems on the planet, providing the opportunity to explore these habitats in an unmatched variety of safari activities

These features give the Park not only outstanding natural beauty but also offer visitors the most diverse array of safari activities, not only fantastic day & night game drives and bush walks but also canoeing, game viewing by boat and catch & release sport fishing for the ferocious tigerfish. The iconic animal of this area is the elephant of which there are many, plus there are lions, leopards, wild dog, herds of buffalo, zebra, warthog and several antelope species whilst along the river there are many hippo and crocodile. Absent are giraffes and rhino, the latter having been poached out in the 1970’s but there are plans afoot to have them reintroduced. This area is still unspoiled as it is new to tourism and is afforded a high level of protection from the Zambian Government and the local tour operators. It was only declared a National Park in 1983, and the Cumings Family, who own and operate Chiawa Camp, brought the first tourists to the Park in 1990, creating one of Africa's finest safari experiences, opening access and all the game viewing

loops enjoyed within the Park today. One of the special features of this Park is that the safari operators formed and support Conservation Lower Zambezi which works closely with Government and provides Environmental Education to the local communities as well as logistical support for law enforcement to ensure that the wildlife and habitat of the Lower Zambezi is protected today and for future generations. A Management Plan guides and controls development and visitor use of the area, designed to ensure safari activities are low impact, which maintains a top quality safari experience. Visitors to the Park are thus assured of seeing very little human activity. This has led to the Lower Zambezi National Park providing one of Africa's finest wilderness experiences and why a visit should be on everyone's bucket list.

It’s a fact; a trip to Zambia is considered incomplete if it does not include Livingstone-Zambia’s tourism capital and home of the mighty Victoria Falls known in the local language as ‘Mosi-oa-tunya’ –the smoke that thunders. Livingstone now also carries the tag of having been ‘the proud Host City of the 20th National Assembly of the UNWTO’, successfully co-hosted with Zimbabwe in August, 2013 The Victoria Falls, Zambia’s Number one tourism icon, is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the only one in Affrica! UNESCO has now rightfully designated Victoria Falls as a World Heritage Site making it a special and delicate property to be preserved for all the citizens of the entire world. At 1,708 meters wide and 103 meters deep (at the highest point), with a plunge of 10 million litres of water per second at peak season, and visible sometimes from as far as 80km away, there can be few experiences on this earth as gratifying and as exhilarating! It’s no wonder when Scottish missionary-explorer David Livingstone first saw it, and standing at the roof of the falls we call ‘the Livingstone Island’, he exclaimed: ‘scenes so

30

lovely might have been gazed upon by angels in their flight’. The Victoria Falls is simply the largest curtain of falling water on earth! Aside from the Victoria Falls, the town of Livingstone-Zambia has also earned itself the reputation of being ‘Southern Africa’s adventure capital’. Try the breath-taking white water rafting with a chance to conquer 24 rapids on the wild Zambezi, or get onto the ‘flight of the angels’ for that unsurpassed view of the Victoria Falls and the Zambezi river rapids. You can also try abseiling and the gorge swing off a 70 meter cliff or indeed the breath taking 111 meter bunji jump for that sheer heart stopping thrill at the Victoria Falls Bridge. And just when you think you’ve had the best, Livingstone will immerse you in a special ‘bath tab’ – the Devil’s Pool voted one of the 10 best natural swimming pools in the world by Tripadvisor and No 1 on the Livingstone ‘to do’ list. For more relaxed adventure, visitors to Livingstone can try the Mukuni Big Five for that special encounter with wild animals, or see them in their natural wild at the relatively small but well stocked Mosi-oa-tunya Nation-

al Park. And for an intimate affair with the mighty Zambezi, Livingstone offers special sun set cruises , a perfect way to unwind and see hippos and other animals while you sip away your favourite drink or cocktails; it’s a leisurely game ride like no other! Livingstone-Zambia, boasts of some of Africa’s ‘hottest’ and award-winning luxury properties ranging from 3 to 5 star hotels and safari lodges spread on the banks of the Zambezi River to inexpensive but highly competitive guest houses and back packers located in town. For an encounter with the rich history and artistic gifts of the people, be sure to visit the Livingstone Museum, the Maramba Cultural Village, Railway Museum or the Mukuni Park Crafts Market down town. Whatever your preference, Zambia’s tourism capital has something for you! Those who visit Livingstone-Zambia will forever be glad they made the trip because there is no Livingstone without ‘the Wow factor’! So come on in-Let’s Explore Livingstone!

National Airports Corporation Limited (NACL), the company mandated to manage and maintain the four international airports is happy with progress being made regarding the ambitious infrastructure development project it embarked on three years ago, which will see the expansion and upgrade of the four airports in Zambia. The expansion programme is part of the Company’s five year Strategic Plan (2012 – 2017) whose focus is to upgrade and expand its four airports and air navigational services to internationally acknowledged standards and practices. In an effort to achieve the objectives set out in the Strategic Plan, the company is focusing on four key issues: (i) Improvement of income generation streams (ii) Modernisation of infrastructure & equipment; (iii) Rebranding of the company; (iv) Enhancement of operational efficiency

As the company sets out to implement these plans, the issue of quality remains a key component of the focus areas. NACL believes that it is the quality of its infrastructure, equipment and services that will earn it the global recognition it seeks and help to bring in the business required to enable it continue to contribute to the social, economic and progress of Zambia and the local communities in which it operates. Under this programme, thefirst to be upgraded was theHarry MwaangaNkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, which now boasts a new state of the art international passenger terminal building sitting on 7,000sqm of land at a cost of $50million. The old terminal which was built in 1952 will now be used for domestic and VIP purposes only and will be rehabilitated under phase three of the project. Once completed the new terminal will have features such as lifts, a banking hall, upper

floor VIP and business Lounges, upper floor restaurant and viewing terrace, holding lounge, water feature, curtain walling, duty free and retail shops. Other amenities include electronic advertising spaces, flight information displays, CCTV and access control, modern central air-conditioning system, fire alarm system, security agencies offices, smoking lounges, four entry gates and two exit gates. Construction of the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport terminal buildingat a cost of $360 million is next in line with works scheduled to commence soon. The current airport which was opened in July 1967 is the main gateway into Zambia with potential to become the hub for the continent hence the financial injection aimed at developing brand new passenger terminal and other auxiliary facilities.

On 7th November 2013, the late President Michael Chilufya Sata flagged off the construction works for the reconstruction & expansion of theAirport in Lusaka, a gesture that underpinned the Patriot Front (PF) government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the country. NACL Managing Director, Mr. Robinson Misitala says, NACL is pleased that Government has reaffirmed its commitment by releasing K140 million as advance payment towards the reconstruction and expansion of the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka. The release of the first tranche of funds thus signals the commencement of construction works at the airport which have been phased with the construction of the new passenger terminal and associated facilities being prioritised. The first twelve months of the project involved design of the project facilities. The process has since been completed hence works scheduled to commence by June 2015. Other works in the first phase include construction of the control tower, expansion of the apron, fuel farm, aero bridges, car park and power upgrade. The redevelopment of KKIA is based on a master plan drawn up by the aviation consultancy group Leigh Fischer Associates. The study was funded by the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). Two of the main features of the refurbished airport will be a new passenger terminal with an annual capacity of 4 million passengers (twice the presentcapacity) and a commercial complex with conference facilities, a shopping mall and two hotels– a 30-room hotel for transit passengers and an 80-room hotel open to the general public. Mr Misitala said overhauling KKIA was an

importantpart of the company’s five-year strategic planto modernise all four airports managed by NACLand position the country for the expected growth inboth passenger travel and cargo business. When the project is completed, Mr Misitala saysKKIA will bear comparison with the best airports inAfrica, both in infrastructure as well as in servicedelivery. “You know that for people flying in and out of yourcountry, the first and last image they carry withthem will be that of your airport,” he said. “Wewant to give them something positive and memorablewhen they fly in and out of Lusaka or any of ourthree other international airports.” Mr. Misitala paid tribute to the government for itsunstinting support for NACL strategic plan and forhelping to mobilise the financial support to realize the vision. “With all the support that we are getting fromgovernment and the investment that it is puttinginto these projects, our business is to make NACLa commercially viable entity,” he said. “At the endof the day, government must be happy with thereturns on its investment.” The new airport will contain a new two-story terminal building of 34,500 m2 ( including 22 check-in counters, 12 border channels and 6 security check counters; a presidential

terminal (4,000 m2) for the president, ministers and VIP guests; a new air traffic control building and tower (2,000 m2); a new National Airport Corporation Limited office complex (1,200 m2); an airport hotel of 80 rooms (to be constructed in phases); a new car park (22,200 m2) although the existing car park is large enough; a new cargo terminal (5,000 m2) and new apron and taxiways. As for the Simon Mwansa KapwepweInternational Airport in Ndola, the plan is to relocate to a new site for a green field airport to be constructed at a cost of $522 million. This airport master piece is set to add to the changing face of Ndola city which is home to the first ultra-modern stadium in the country and two major shopping malls. There are also plans on the table to rehabilitate MfuweInternational Airport in Mfuwe, Eastern Provincebecause of its vast potential to develop eco-tourism. “The significant strides being made towards transforming this parastatal into a profitable business venture through the ambitious infrastructure development currently taking place, is a development that we are proud of as an organisation. The infrastructure development and expansion programme that we have embarked on has been necessitated by the anticipated growth in passenger numbers by the year 2029,” says NACL Managing Director, Robinson Misitala. South Luangwa National Park Luangwa offers a nice range of accommodations, all with the best interest of the park in mind. Infrastructures are discreet and limited in size, offering an authentic African experience and a well-renowned level of guiding.

Established primarily in the Eastern Province of Zambia, the South Luangwa National Park is considered to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa. With its 9,050 sq-km, the park showcases a high concentration of animals and is one of Zambia’s main destinations for wildlife enthusiasts. The Luangwa Valley is the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, and the South Luangwa NP lays within natural borders, having the Muchinga Escarpment as its Western border and the Luangwa River as its Eastern border. The area was first founded as a game reserve in 1938, and became a National Park in 1972.

the park, including lions (found sometimes in prides of 20 individuals or more), leopards in high numbers (hence the nickname of the Valley of the Leopard), African wild dogs (on the increase), spotted hyenas, large herds of buffalos and elephants, all sorts of antelopes (impalas, pukus, waterbucks, bushbucks, greater kudus, elands, and more rarely seen roan antelopes) as well as some endemic species such as the Thornicroft giraffe and the Cookson wildebeest, or near-endemic such as the Crawshay zebra. The Luangwa River probably has the highest concentration of Nile crocodiles and hippos in all of Africa. It is simply outstanding!

The incredible diversity of habitats characterizes South Luangwa and brings along an extraordinarily large variety of wildlife and birdlife. Apart from the well know riverine habitat found alongside the banks of the Luangwa River, various woodlands and open grasslands are also emblematic of the park, including dense Mopane and Miombo woodlands, scattered Baobab trees, while rocky escarpments with natural waterfalls shape the western part of the park. The Luangwa River and its numerous tributaries, as well as floodplains and oxbow lagoons, add to the majestic landscapes while being the lifeline of the park and its wildlife. As the countryside dries out over the course of the winter months, these accesses to water see dazzling concentration of animals.

. South Luangwa is a must for birdwatchers too, with over 420 species of birds recorded.

Over 60 types of mammals were recorded in

Only a short fly away from Lusaka, South

Of course the best ways to observe this incredible richness is by going on safari with one of the many operators in the Valley. All lodges organize game drives in the morning and afternoon, as well as night drives to spot nocturnal animals and locate predators on the move. South Luangwa being the birthplace of the walking safaris, exploring the bush on foot remains the finest way to experience the true un-spoilt wilderness of the park. From a four-hour bushwalk to a multi day mobile safari, qualified safari guides and armed scouts will bring you close to nature in total safety.

Year-round accommodations are found in the Mfuwe area, while remote bush camps are accessible during the dry season only, from June to October. There is a choice for all budgets, from camping sites (only outside of the park) to highly luxurious safari operators. South Luangwa also offers some of the best cultural tourism activities in Africa. Kawaza Village Tourism Project has been running for over 15 years and has won many awards. An overnight stay in the real village, experiencing what the local people experience in their normal lives makes for an interesting addition to the safari holiday The South Luangwa and its surrounding areas has benefited through tourism that has developed since those early days of the first walking safaris pioneered by the great Norman Carr. Now the tourists money can be seen to be helping communities achieve a better life. Not only is employment in this rural area impressive but the social infrastructure enabled by tourism and tourists money is very impressive. Many of the lodges support community and conservation projects and visitors are encouraged to see the remarkable developments achieved with these investments. It is a great model of how tourism and communities can co exist and of the benefits that a tourism economy can bring to rural areas. See just some of the award winning community and conservation projects below (www.projectluangwa.org and www.slcszambia.org) Although the quickest way to reach South Luangwa is by plane, with daily scheduled flights available from Lusaka and Lilongwe, road transfers from these capital cities have also greatly improved with recent work on the road networks. And public transport can be an alternative for budget travelers. Isabelle Defourny and Adrian Coley Sales & Marketing Manager – Kafunta Safaris Managing Director - Flatdogs Camp
