46 GREENWOOD AVENUE

Storey Plan

Storey Plan

The reconstruction of the semi-detached residence at 46 Greenwood Avenue aimed to create a highly functional and tranquil living space that combines modern amenities with an enhanced sense of privacy. Located on a busy street, the primary challenge was to design a home that offers a peaceful retreat despite its urban setting.

As you enter through the living room, the design ensures a smooth transition through the dining area and dry kitchen before leading you up the staircase, strategically positioned for convenient access to the attic and other upper levels. The core of the architectural solution is a central courtyard that not only enhances the flow of natural light but also integrates seamlessly with the living, dining, and dry kitchen areas. The architectural design features a distinctive louvre facade that acts as a sophisticated skin for the house, enhancing both privacy and shading. These louvres effectively shield the home from the bustling street outside, controlling light and reducing heat while maintaining a bright and airy interior. The open layout of the living, dining, and dry kitchen areas is seamlessly connected, benefiting from the controlled light and improved privacy provided by the louvre system. On the first floor, the terrace is designed as a verdant retreat, offering a serene and sheltered environment away from external view.

The open-plan arrangement of the living, dining, and dry kitchen areas is designed to maximize spatial openness and ensure a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The central courtyard provides a bright and inviting atmosphere with lush green wall plantings and cascading vines establish a serene environment, enhancing natural ventilation and light throughout the home. The attic levels feature a dedicated attic space designed as a family area and home study, offering a versatile and private retreat. This space is thoughtfully integrated into the overall design, providing a harmonious balance between shared family areas and functional workspaces.

6C JALAN ARIF

The design brief for 6C Jalan Arif centered around creating a modern, family-oriented residence that offers both practicality and a strong connection to the surrounding natural environment. Situated on a serene street away from heavy traffic and public transit routes, the focus was on maximizing privacy while fostering a tranquil living experience.

Given the need for additional space beyond the standard building envelope, the solution involved the innovative use of a mezzanine floor. This design feature allowed the insertion of an extra storey, effectively expanding the usable space within the confines of the site’s long and narrow dimensions. The design carefully addresses the need for privacy between distinct family zones, ensuring that each generation enjoys their own space without compromising on interaction or accessibility.

A significant challenge of the semi-detached nature of the house was the limited natural light due to shared party walls. To counteract this, an internal airwell was strategically carved out in the middle of the home and covered with a glass skylight. This airwell serves as a vital source of natural light for all living and bedroom spaces, brightening the interior and enhancing the sense of openness. The skylight, designed with ventilation slots, facilitates the escape of hot air, creating a chimney stack effect that draws cooler air and to maintain a comfortable indoor climate throughout the day.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY HEART CENTRE, SINGAPORE ANGIOGRAPHY CENTRE

The National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS) is embarking on an important project to renovate its existing Dental Centre 3 into a new Angiography Centre. This significant endeavor will include the construction of new Angiography Suites within an area of approximately 860 square meters on Level 2 of the Main Building. The initiative aims to enhance the hospital’s medical capabilities and improve patient care services.

As with any renovation of this scale, several foreseeable challenges and constraints must be addressed to ensure a smooth transition into the new facility. One of the primary concerns is maintaining sensitivity to the existing operations and functionality of the hospital. This includes managing noise and dust generated during construction and ensuring that wheelchair and patient bed accessibility remain a priority. Additionally, coordination with multiple stakeholders, user-groups, and departments is essential to keep communication lines open and project objectives aligned.

Special considerations will be made for the clinical areas situated directly below the construction site. It will be necessary to study the feasibility of implementing a double slab construction to protect these sensitive areas from potential disruptions. Furthermore, adherence to authority compliance requirements is paramount.

Additionally, assessments will be conducted regarding the existing sprinkler system, emergency lights, and smoke detectors, as well as ensuring a sufficient toilet count for replacement or relocation in accordance with Accessibility Code requirements.

Patient flows and operational management will be diligently integrated into the design considerations of the new facility. Infection control measures are also a priority, particularly concerning clinical care and administrative procedures related to infectious diseases.

The main feature of the new Angiography Centre will be the Angiography room, designed to accommodate advanced imaging equipment and allow for a seamless workflow. This room will feature a spacious layout to facilitate the movement of medical staff and equipment while ensuring patient comfort. The design will include specialized lighting and integrated technology to support diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Sufficient space will be allocated for the imaging system, patient bed, and ancillary medical equipment, as well as areas for staff to position themselves during procedures.

Adjacent to the Angiography room will be a dedicated control room. This crucial area will house the operator controls for the imaging equipment, ensuring that technologists can effectively monitor and manage the imaging process while overseeing the patient’s safety. The control room will be strategically located to provide a clear line of sight into the Angiography room, allowing operators to maintain effective communication with the surgical team and quickly respond to any arising situations. Additionally, the design will incorporate soundproofing measures to minimize disruptions during procedures.

The scrub room will be located in close proximity to the Angiography room, designed for staff to perform hand hygiene and prepare for procedures. It will feature multiple scrub sinks, adequate storage for sterile supplies, and separate spaces for donning personal protective equipment. The layout will ensure smooth traffic flow, reducing cross-contamination risks while allowing for efficient preparation before entering the Angiography room.

To mitigate risks during the construction stage, several measures will be implemented. Proper hoarding will be erected, accompanied by noise barriers to limit disturbances from intrusive work such as drilling. Work will be scheduled thoughtfully to minimize patient and staff interruptions, and advance notices will inform staff of the planned works and logistics strategies. Thoughtful planning of delivery and moving routes from the loading and unloading area to the designated site will be crucial in minimizing disruptions to other ongoing medical processes and circulation flows within the hospital.

As a sports-oriented organization, the Civil Service Club encourages active member participation. The new facade design aims to highlight this focus by making sports facilities, such as badminton courts, a dance studio, a gym, a rock climbing wall, and a yoga studio, more visible to the public. The desiagn will enhance visibility and create a visual connection between the public and the club’s active spaces, showcasing the club’s sports heritage. The updated facade will replace the current driveway with a garden and introduce a green boundary wall, softening the buiding’s appearance with greenery.

To enhance the entrance, part of the existing stairs will be removed to create a more spacious and welcoming area. The open space and high ceiling will contribute to a grander entrance experience. CUBO MODULAR FUTURE LIBRARY

Tucked in the port city Genoa, Italy; the future library was conceptualized and inspired with the local colorful cliff house along the Mediterranean Sea and the pebble stone which vision to bring a breath of fresh and cozy environment into the current modern library designed. We are inspired by the stacking and arrangement of pebble stone which have tons of adjustment and arrangement of pattern and layout through jointing and fitting the stones.

The main architectural design strategies are incorporating the human orientated and anthropometry design into the layout and furniture design where the users can customize their preference spaces with the module provided in the library. It can be reused, rearranged, and relocated easily by the users linger in the oasis of learning, pleasurable and organized setting.

One of the highlight is the library spaces are designed in a modular form where the ‘FLEXIBLITY’ and ‘MOVABILTY’ of various ‘MIX & MATCH’ of the modules with the number of users can be archieved according to different situations. The modular box serves as the sitting and reading table for the students, the study pod module can provide a confine area and enclosure for the private meeting, group discussion, brainstrom and even e-meeting with the use of glass technology.

The integration of earth (light rosewood module) and nature color scheme (sky blue and parakeet green artificial turf along the walkway) into the spaces aim to promote and enhance the study enviroment. Indoor potted plants of various textures and lighting are used which exudes quiet sophistication to the reading quality in that area. It also serves to enliven the spaces with the puncture of fresh air into the spaces.

FESTIVE MARKET PLAZA & SKY OASIS

The proposed site consists of two parcels of relatively flat land on opposite sides of Jalan Perak, Penang, with a total area of 12.532 Acres. Both parcels of land do not have very distinct frontage from Jalan Perak, and are set back considerably from the main road. Around the site, the land use is diverse and congested.

This project is located in an existing neighborhood that has developed intricate social networks and local identity. Therefore rather than creating a new community, this submission is founded on the premise of “infilling” and enriching the existing social networks thus contributing to it’s social sustainability.

While the architectural design and planning considers economic viability, its success as a sustainable community is dependent on the support and services of the local agencies and an inclusive participatory management. This proposal aims to create a sanctuary where residents can live, work, play, and pray within the comfort and security of their homes and neighbourhood.
