Chicago Cloud Gate Kiosk

2015 The kiosk began with the idea of creating an approximation the form of Chicago’s Millennium Park Cloud Gate through simple construction techniques and cost-effective materials. The form would be in two parts – the dome top half, and the service area lower half, separated by a ribbon window, and supported in such a way that the top would appear to float without visible exterior supports. This, combined with the reflective cladding and simplified bean shape, would mimic the ephemeral qualities of the Cloud Gate in a year – round serviceable kiosk, suitable for any vendor program. The construction process starts with a simple wooden framing system. In the upper dome, 2 sets of 3 ribs run parallel to each other in orthogonal directions, forming the core structure. In each of the 4 gaps between these sets, 2 more ribs are spaced in a radially equivalent. Wooden cross bracing supports these 6
primary ribs in 2 series of arcs, spaced radially around the longitudinal axis. This entire support system is constructed from simple 2”x4” wood beams held together by steel straps, brackets, and bolts. Though each piece has to be trimmed to a specific shape, the kiosk is quadrilateral symmetric, and each of the pieces originates from a standardized part. This entire system is supported by 8 4”x4” wood columns (4 in a square around the center crossing, and 4 midway to the exterior to brace the system against wobbling), and 8 4”x4” cross beams, which the plywood sill hands from. All wooden pieces are made from hard maple, which was chosen for its low flexibility, reducing the chance that it will bend and crack the ribbon windows. The overall effect is an umbrella-shaped support system, with the central supports less visible due to the reflective exterior of the kiosk, giving the impression that the dome hovers over a glass ribbon.

The problem: City's Desertification Beigang Primary School Design

2012 It can be seen from the satellite image that, the city that is in development looks like a desert, barren and gray. But the village that is without development looks like an oasis among the desert. Therefore, I came up with the idea of “City’s desertification”. Nowadays, modern city may have climate problems just like those in the desert. So the main goal of this program is to avoid city’s desertification while developing the city. The design of Beigang Primary School is trying to create enough space in the building while keeping the original environment, so that the building and environment can complement to each other. The environment becomes energetic due to the building, and the building becomes vital because of the environment. Therefore, the building and environment bring out the best in each other.

Daniel Lin, Rene Duchesne COMPLETION
2014 The project requires us to design a NonGovernmental Organization located in Sheridan Circle, Washington DC, that is supposed to conduct research and promote discussion about the 4th Amendment. Our aim was to address this issue ourselves through a series of design strategies related to the idea of “Peeking”, our main concept. Our building is divided into two main volumes: the observers (or voyeurs) and the observed. This informed our plan layout, and is made possible by design moves such as the creation of an atrium space that divides the building program amongst the observers and the observed, and provides a view to the most public space of all, the assembly space located in the basement. In terms of the envelope, we worked with the idea of a “layered” façade composed of three “skins” or “curtains” that perform differently, depending of the façade orientation. They provide privacy, shading, energy, or a combination of 26
these. Whilst the outer layer is static, and composed of solar thermal panels (in the southern and southeastern facades),the inner layer is composed of a series of fritted glass panels that can provide shading to different parts of the office. Lastly, there’s the curtain wall (or innermost layer), which can be opened to allow wind in whenever its needed, and it can be sealed during the coldest months. Lastly, there is a roof garden in the fourth floor, hovering over the atrium, but surrounded by the small woodland that can be found behind the site, and that can diminish energy costs for the building throughout the year. Thus, our conceptual strategies are also environmental strategies: The skylight reduces the need for artificial lighting, and is equipped with a micro-shielding louvers system designed by Siteco that evenly distributes light to avoid glare. The green roof shields the interior spaces of excessive heat, and lightens the load for the air-conditioning systems during the summer. Lastly, our paneling system, the last component of our façade, performs differently throughout the building, satisfying different needs.

2015 Architecture tends to be too serious and pleased with itself. As the heaviest and most expensive of cultural practices, this really comes as no surprise, but it still grates a little. Never nimble, or surprising, its most recent contributions to the world are all quite obviously important and groundbreaking, although somehow entirely conservative and privileging the same things that conservative establishment architecture tends to privilege: wealth, power, extravagant ‘cutting-edge’ technology and masterful new techniques. Virtuosity is always analogues to quality, and exotic expensive materials are always thematic answers to stuffy concerns like “materiality” for these people. I think its due to the effort to make rich people happy either by understandable necessity (they’re paying for it) or by not so understandable and kinda gross personal caring about 36

the tastes of the wealthy. Using less formal forms and regrettable colors, we’ll try to continue some work on a project towards an awkward and clumsy grammar for buildings. Instead of being spectacular and greedy for attention, our work will be shameful, inappropriate, and clearly not too well thought out. In fact, we’re probably going to be wasting a lot of time and resources of an otherwise well-meaning institution. As gratuity to our hosts, we’ll at least focus our relaxed, but spirited intentions on a medium or big-sized residential thing in the city of Chicago for people to live in; some town homes and allied outdoor space. Its the least we can do. Really. Our work will be a out of place, or missized, or maybe a little malformed or something, and also, will engage really big overlays of color. Not orange, or pink or other fashionable ones, but browns, ochres, bad blues, and maybe mustards choice some people make. DN
